Propane vs Gas Generators: What to Consider "IndyWatch Feed Survival"

Power generators are an essential part of most prepping master plans. While solar power is an option a backup generator offers many people a better alternative and access to power during an emergency. How high is practical for hose irrigation with 330 gallon IBCs? "IndyWatch Feed Survival"

I have acquired a few 330 gallon IBC totes. I am breaking in a new garden plot, line of young fruit trees, and livestock pen that I want to provide water to. My closest hose bib is across a fairly busy dirt road and I neither want to expose the hose to road traffic nor drag 150 of hose back and forth daily.

None of these distances are over 50 from where I want to put my tiny water tower. How high do you recommend I place it? I know someone here has been through a similar challenge....

Rare Snow Falls in the Sahara Desert Creating Atypical Icy Sand Dunes "IndyWatch Feed Arts"

When people from the small town of Ain Sefra, Algeria woke up on Sunday, January 7, they were in for a surprise. For the second time in a little over a year, white, powdery snow left a light blanket over the Sahara Desert. And though it had already melted by late afternoon, local photographer Karim Bouchetata was once again able to capture the surreal scene.

Bouchetata also photographed the December 2016 Sahara snowfall, which was the first in 37 years.  And though Algeria is a long way off from the East Coast of the United States, the same cold front contributed to snow in both places. Cold air that caused heavy snowfall on the East Coast crossed the Atlantic, making temperatures drop in unexpected places, like the Sahara. The result is the thin layer of snow across the sandy desert.

But given that the photos appear to be taken in areas located at a higher altitude, a spokesperson for The Met Office told The Independent that snow isn't as unusual as one would think. It seems like the snowy pictures were taken across the higher areas in the north of the region, towards the Atlas regions, so its not surprising that the area would see some snow if the conditions were right.

Regardless, the recurrence of snow in the Sahara is just another sign of changing climates around the world. From polar bears living without snow to the installation of artificial reefs as a replacement for natural habitats, shifting climates are impacting animalsand humansacross the globe.

For the second time in a little over a year, snow fell across the Sahara Desert.

Separate the weedkiller from the oral rinse, FDA tells maker of OTC drugs "IndyWatch Feed Health"

From the FDAs point of view, OTC [over the counter, no prescription needed] drugs and weedkiller just dont mix. That is the message delivered in a newly posted warning letter to an Iowa company that the FDA says hasnt seemed to learn from past mistakes.

The FDA sent a warning letter late last month to the owner of Continental Manufacturing Chemist after an inspection of a plant in Madrid, Iowa, which among other things, makes earwax drops, oral rinse, and fluoride toothpastes as well as lawn care and other products.

During the April 2017 visit, investigators discovered that the facility wasnt physically separating the OTC products like the oral rinse from the weedkiller or adhesive remover and didnt even have quarantine markings to make sure products didnt get mixed up.

The plant released at least three batches of oral rinse and two batches of fluoride toothpaste without the products being reviewed by the quality unit and did not thoroughly investigate most of the product quality discrepancies or customer complaints that were lodged or half of the 16 manufacturing quality discrepancies noted, the letter notes.

The FDA said that the companys planned responses were not adequate. It also pointed out that a number of the observations had been noted in previous inspections, even though the plant has a consultant advising it about how to meet FDA standards. The agency said it was time for the company management to figure out the shortcomings and get them fixed.

Some of the issues may be addressed with a new $9.2 million, 80,000-square-foot manufacturing plant that the Ames Tribune reported the company intends to build in Huxley, Iowa, about 12 miles from its current home. The Huxley city council approved a $584,000 financial aid package in August to entice Continental to build the plant there instead of accepting an incentive package that would have had it move to a St. Louis, Missouri, suburb. Additionally, the company is slated to get $829,000 in forgivable, interest-free loans and tax credits from the Iowa Economic Development Agency. The company has promised to add 48 new positions to the 50 it currently has at its current facility.

Art galleries are kind of like restaurants. Its a hard business, and although its always sad when one closes (especially after many years serving the neighborhood), when a new one opens, it brings new promise. While 2017 saw the closing of venues like Envoy Enterprises, CRG Gallery, and Sandra Gering Inc., it also witnessed the opening of several brand new galleries in New York City. Here are a few of them.

Bernarducci Gallery Chelsea (529 West 20th Street, Chelsea, Manhattan)

Longtime art dealer and curator Frank Bernarduccis new gallery focuses on realist painting. He opened a project space in January and moved into a larger Chelsea gallery in October. Bernarduccis inaugural Chelsea show, New Precisionism, brought together paintings and photographs by 19 artists, including John Baeder, Nathan Walsh, and Sally Davies. The current exhibition, Neil MacCormick: One Day at Rest, paintings of the artists everyday life as captured by cameras mounted on the ceiling of his condo, runs through January 27.

Alpha mangostin has potential to be further developed as therapeutic agent for dengue virus infection. "IndyWatch Feed Health"

PMID:  Virus Res. 2017 Aug 15 ;240:180-189. Epub 2017 Aug 31. PMID: 28864423 Abstract Title:  Alpha-mangostin inhibits both dengue virus production and cytokine/chemokine expression. Abstract:  Since severe dengue virus (DENV) infection in humans associates with both high viral load and massive cytokine production - referred to as"cytokine storm", an ideal drug for treatment of DENV infection should efficiently inhibit both virus production and cytokine expression. In searching for such an ideal drug, we discovered that-mangostin (-MG), a major bioactive compound purified from the pericarp of the mangosteen fruit (Garcinia mangostana Linn), which has been used in traditional medicine for several conditions including trauma, diarrhea, wound infection, pain, fever, and convulsion, inhibits both DENV production in cultured hepatocellular carcinoma HepG2 and Huh-7 cells, and cytokine/chemokine expression in HepG2 cells. -MG could also efficiently inhibit all four serotypes of DENV. Treatment of DENV-infected cells with -MG (20M) significantly reduced the infection rates of four DENV serotypes by 47-55%. -MG completely inhibited production of DENV-1 and DENV-3, and markedly reduced production of DENV-2 and DENV-4 by 100 folds. Furthermore, it could markedly reduce cytokine (IL-6 and TNF-) and chemokine (RANTES, MIP-1, and IP-10) transcription. These actions of -MG are more potent than those of antiviral agent (ribavirin) and anti-inflammatory drug (dexamethasone). Thus, -MG is potential to be further developed as therapeutic agent for DENV infection.

Sessions Goes After Dangerous Marijuana, Grants Opioid Maker Rights to Synthetic THC "IndyWatch Feed Health"

sessions marijuana

By Heather CallaghanEditor

Here is a tragic joke: Why is synthetic THC deemed safe but natural marijuana is considered dangerous? Punchline: Because the government said so.

It would be funny, if this new nightmare scenario werent true and if the war on drugs didnt result in the death and imprisonment of innocent people. Or, the denial of medical rights to people in severe pain. Or the assurance that those dependent on deadly opioids stay that way.

Last week we reported that the Federal Government just ended its leniency toward states rights for medical marijuana. Attorney General Jeff Sessions overturned a previous memo that granted federal leniency toward states marijuana rights. The statement last Thursday said, todays memo on federal marijuana enforcement simply directs all U.S. Attorneys to use previously established prosecutorial principles that provide them all the necessary tools to disrupt criminal organizations, tackle the growing drug crisis, and thwart violent crime across our country.

ROCKVILLE, MarylandWhile you were (hopefully) enjoying the winter holidays, a study was published in the Journal of Inorganic Biochemistry (it went online on December 27th) that could change the autism debate permanently. A Brief History of Making Deals with the Devil: Niccol Paganini, Robert Johnson, Jimmy Page & More "IndyWatch Feed Arts"

When the term witch hunt gets thrown around in cases of powerful men accused of harassment and abuse, historians everywhere bang their heads against their desks. The history of persecuting witchesas every schoolboy and girl knows from the famous Salem Trialsinvolves accusations moving decidedly in the other direction.

But were very familiar with men supposedly selling out to Satan, dealingor just duelingwith the devil. They werent called witches for doing so, or burned at the stake. They were blues pioneers, virtuoso fiddlers, and guitar gods. From the devilishly dashing Niccol Paganini, to Robert Johnson at the Crossroads, to Jimmy Page's black magic, to The Devil Went Down to Georgia, to the omnipresence of Satan in metal. The devil seems to have quite the interest in music, notes the Polyphonic video above.

Before musicians came to terms with the dark lord, power-hungry scholars used demonology to summon Luciferian emissaries like Mephistopheles. The legend of Faust dates back to the late 16th century and a historical alchemist named Johann Georg Faust, who inspired many dramatic works, like Christopher Marlowes The Tragical History of Doctor Faustus, Johann Goethes Faust, Thomas Manns Doctor Faustus, Mikhail Bugakovs The Master and Margarita, and F.W. Murnaus 1926 silent film.

The Faust legend may be the sturdiest of such stories, but it is not by any means the origin of the idea. Medieval Catholic saints feared the devil's enticements constantly. Medieval occultists often saw things differently. If we can trace the notion of women consorting with the devil to the Biblical Eve in the Garden, we find male analogues in the New TestamentChrist's temptations in the desert, Judas's thirty pieces of silver, the possessed vagrant who sends his demons into a herd of pigs. But we might even say that God made the first deal with the devil, in the opening wager of the book of Job.

NY Democrat Stole Hurricane Funds And Tried To Cover It UP "IndyWatch Feed Survival"

pamela-harris

Another day, another corruption scandal involving a Democrat. New York Assemblywoman Pamela Harris, who claims to be an advocate for the poor, was charged with stealing Hurricane Sandy relief funds and trying to cover it up.

According to NBC NY, Pamela Harris, a former New York City correction officer, was named in an 11-count indictment charging her with cheating the two storm relief agencies out of thousands of dollars before and after she was elected to the State Assembly in 2017. The indictment also accuses the Coney Island Democrat of stealing from New York City Council coffers while running a nonprofit and lying about her schemes during bankruptcy proceedings in 2013.

As part of the scheme, prosecutors and FBI agents said she claimed the storm forced her out of her home by Sandy and into a rental on Staten Island, only to pocket $24,800 in housing payments from FEMA while living in her Brooklyn home, from 2012 to 2014. She also lied on a NYC Build it Back assistance application about living at the first-floor Staten Island apartment and submitted a forged lease and rental receipts, according to the indictment. -NBC NY

Ms. Harris has been an invaluable community organizer and a well-regarded legislator. Especially given that background, we are disappointed that Ms. Harris was indicted, her attorneys Joel Cohen and Jerry Goldfeder said in a statement.  Meaning that since Harris is a politician, she should be above the laws she forces on the rest of us.  Democrats always think they are more equal than everyone else.  The attornies added that she has pleaded not guilty and that the indictment does not relate to her conduct in office.

Both before and during her tenure as a public servant, as alleged, Assemblywoman Pamela Harris went to great lengths to defraud local and federal agencies out of thousands of dollars, said William Sweeney, the FBIs assistant director-in-charge. In fact, at a time when many residents in her district were dealing with the horr...

Top 22 Uses for Apple Cider Vinegar "IndyWatch Feed Health"

apple cider vinegar benefits

By Dr. Mercola

Hippocrates used vinegar to manage wounds, while medical practitioners in the 1700s used it to treat everything from poison ivy and croup to stomach aches. Vinegar was even used to treat diabetes.1

Vinegar, which means sour wine in French, can be made from virtually any carbohydrate that can be fermented, including grapesdatescoconutpotatoesbeets, and, of course, apples.

The benefits and uses of apple cider vinegar (ACV) are now known to many (more on this later), which is why this is becoming a staple in many peoples kitchen pantries.

Traditionally, vinegar is made through a long, slow fermentation process, leaving it rich in bioactive components like acetic acid, gallic acid, catechin, epicatechin, caffeic acid, and more, giving it potent antioxidant, antimicrobial, and many other beneficial properties.

Abstract:  A novel xanthone dimer derivative, garmoxanthone (1), together with 10 known compounds (2-11), were isolated from bark of Garcinia mangostana. Their structures were established through spectroscopic methods. Garmoxanthone exhibited strong inhibitory activities against MRSA ATCC 43300 and MRSA CGMCC 1.12409 (with MIC values of both 3.9 g/mL) and moderate activities against tested strains of Vibrio (with MIC values ranging from 15.6 to 31.2 g/mL). Garmoxanthone is a unique xanthone dimer with linkage of a fused 5/6 ring system and its absolute configuration was elucidated on the basis of experimental and calculated electronic circular dichroism. Garmoxanthone exhibited strong antibacterial activity which partially validated the ethnobotanical use of G. mangostana in the treatment of infections.

Interview: Woman Relives the Past by Sewing Her Own 18th and 19th Century Dresses "IndyWatch Feed Arts"

Historical Dresses by Lauren Rossi

Photo: Phillip Van Nostrand

The human race hasnt quite figured out time travelyetbut people are finding other ways to explore alternate eras of existence. One approach is through historical dresses, in which an individual dons the garments that people from a particular time period would wear. Lauren Rossi is one of the best at this; she's passionate about very slow fashion and uses her clothing construction know-how and deep love for the past to create custom outfits from the 18th and 19th centuries. The results are a brilliant display of engineered clothing thats impeccably modeled by Rossi herself.

Rossi is quick to say that shes inspired by history, but not a recreationist. Color, texture and ridiculously sumptuous fabrics inspire me, she writes. I love natural fabrics and hand-worked details. In patterning and piecing together garments, it allows Rossi a hands-on approach to exploring one facet of the past. You can learn quite a bit about the nature of womens lives by studying how they dressed, she tells My Modern Met in an email. But, Rossi isnt afraid to insert facets of modernity when appropriate either. My panniers (hoops) are made with built-in hinges, she explains, so I can pack them up for travel or fold them up to sit in a modern car or chair.

We had the pleasure of speaking to Rossi about her unique take on the history of fashion, as well as what its like to venture into the modern world wearing such fancy clothes. Read our exclusive interview, below.

Finding the Roots of Graphic Novels in the Ancient World "IndyWatch Feed Arts"

Graphic novels have long been a powerful medium for speaking to the masses, even if they havent been referred to as such. The stories told through ancient art have spoken to more people than most ancient authors, and yet they have never received the same respect as writers such as Thucydides or Virgil. In part, this stems from the belief that the written word and literacy are two elements of a refined civilization. However, expanding out ideas of literacy to include a more graphic lexicon not only elevates comics, graphic novels, and other narrative art forms, it allows us to read the ancient world much more successfully.

Comics and graphic novels have a disputed origin story, the features of which depend on how exactly you define the medium. The etymology of the term dates back to the use of comical cartoon strips inserted into American newspapers in the late 19th century. However, if comics are broadly construed as a series of artistic panels that form graphic narratives, one could argue for their birth as early as the cave paintings of Paleolithic France.

Garcinia mangostana displays antidepressant-like and pro-cognitive effects in a genetic animal model of depression. "IndyWatch Feed Health"

PMID:  Metab Brain Dis. 2017 Nov 3. Epub 2017 Nov 3. PMID: 29101602 Abstract Title:  Garcinia mangostana Linn displays antidepressant-like and pro-cognitive effects in a genetic animal model of depression: a bio-behavioral study in the Flinders Sensitive Line rat. Abstract:  There is abundant evidence for both disorganized redox balance and cognitive deficits in major depressive disorder (MDD). Garcinia mangostana Linn (GM) has anti-oxidant activity. We studied the antidepressant-like and pro-cognitive effects of raw GM rind in Flinders Sensitive Line (FSL) rats, a genetic model of depression, following acute and chronic treatment compared to a reference antidepressant, imipramine (IMI). The chemical composition of the GM extract was analysed for levels of- and -mangostin. The acute dose-dependent effects of GM (50, 150 and 200 mg/kg po), IMI (20 mg/kg po) and vehicle were determined in the forced swim test (FST) in FSL rats, versus Flinders Resistant Line (FRL) control rats. Locomotor testing was conducted using the open field test (OFT). Using the most effective dose above coupled with behavioral testing in the FST and cognitive assessment in the novel object recognition test (nORT), a fixed dose 14-day treatment study of GM was performed and compared to IMI- (20 mg/kg/day) and vehicle-treated animals. Chronic treated animals were alsoassessed with respect to frontal cortex and hippocampal monoamine levels and accumulation of malondialdehyde. FSL rats showed significant cognitive deficits and depressive-like behavior, with disordered cortico-hippocampal 5-hydroxyindole acetic acid (5-HIAA) and noradrenaline (NA), as well as elevated hippocampal lipid peroxidation. Acute and chronic IMI treatment evoked pronounced antidepressant-like effects. Raw GM extract contained 117 mg/g and 11 mg/g - and -mangostin, respectively, with acute GM demonstrating antidepressant-like effects at 50 mg/kg/day. Chronic GM (50 mg/kg/d) displayed significant antidepressant- and pro-cognitive effects, while demonstrating parity with IMI. Both behavioral and monoamine assessments suggest a more prominent serotonergic action for GM as opposed to a noradrenergic action for IMI, while both IMI and GM reversed hippocampal lipid peroxidation in FSL animals. Concluding, FSL rats present with cognitive deficits and depressive-like behaviors that are reversed by acute and chronic GM treatment, similar to that of IMI.

Artist Paints Exquisite Miniature Landscapes Based on Bike Routes Shes Traveled "IndyWatch Feed Arts"

Miniature Paintings by Dina Brodsky

This post may contain affiliate links. If you make a purchase, My Modern Met may earn an affiliate commission. Please read our disclosure for more info.

The habits and interests we establish when were younger often go on to influence our lives in powerful ways. When artist Dina Brodsky was eighteen years old, she discovered two passions that would become permanent fixtures in her life. The first was painting, she writes. The second was long-distance bicycling. In her series Cycling Guide to Lilliput, she demonstrates how the two work together to inform her exquisite miniature landscape artwork.

Long distance cycling tours became my preferred form of travel, a way to gather ideas and information for the next year of painting, Brodsky explains. Specifically, I was drawn to miniature painting, studying first Islamic miniature art, then medieval manuscript illumination, combining that with the classical painting techniques I learned through the years. Each of her small works encapsulates a memory she had while traveling, from moon-lit scenes to snowy roadways to reflecting ponds. Painted with an incredible realism, the circular life-like compositions allude to a larger story in which Brodsky guides the way.

What compels Brodsky to paint at such an impressively tiny scale? I like to think that the reason my works have gotten so tiny over the years is that painting itself is partially an act of meditation, she muses, of being able to hold something still enough in my mind that I can capture an image of it. These findings provide evidence that isolated -mangostin from the peels of G. mangostana L. has antibiofilm activity against Staphylococcus aureus. "IndyWatch Feed Health"

PMID:  Asian Pac J Trop Med. 2017 Dec ;10(12):1154-1160. Epub 2017 Oct 31. PMID: 29268971 Abstract Title:  Antibiofilm activity of-mangostin extracted from Garcinia mangostana L. against Staphylococcus aureus. Abstract:  OBJECTIVE: To isolate-mangostin (AMG) from the peels of mangosteen (Garcinia mangostana L.), grown in Vietnam, and to investigate antibiofilm activity of this compound against three Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus) strains, one of which was methicillin-resistant S. aureus (MRSA) and the other two strains were methicillin-sensitive S. aureus (MSSA).METHODS: AMG in n-hexane fraction was isolated on a silica gel column and chemically analyzed by HPLC and NMR. The antibiofilm activity of this compound was investigated by using a 96-well plate model for the formation of biofilms. Biofilm biomass was quantified using crystal violet. The viability of cells was observed under confocal microscopy using LIVE/DEAD BacLight stains. Biofilm composition was determined using specific chemical and enzyme tests for polysaccharide, protein and DNA. Membrane-damaging activity was assayed by measuring the hemolysis of human red blood cells in presence of AMG.RESULTS: The results indicated that the isolated AMG, with a purity that exceeded 98%, had minimal inhibitory concentrations in the range of 4.6-9.2 mol/L for the three strains tested. Interestingly, the MSSA strains were more sensitive to AMG than the MRSA strain. Minimal bactericidal concentrations were 2-fold higher than the minimal inhibitory concentration values for the three strains, indicating that AMG was a bactericidal compound. AMGalso prevented biofilm formation effectively, albeit that again the MRSA strain was the most resistant. Interestingly, biofilms of the MRSA strain contained protein as a main component of the extracellular matrix, whereas this was polysaccharide in the MSSA strains. This might relate to the resistance of the MRSA 252 strain to AMG. Assays using human red blood cells indicated that AMG caused significant membrane damage with 50% of cell lysis occurred at concentration of about 36 mol/L.CONCLUSIONS: Our results provide evidence that the isolated AMG has inhibitory activity against biofilm formation by S. aureus, including MRSA. Thus, isolated AMG proposes a high potential to develop a novel phytopharmaceutical for the treatment of MRSA.

Abstract:  A new prenylated xanthone, garcixanthone A (5), together with eight known compounds, mangostanaxanthones I (1) and II (2), garcinone E (3),-mangostin (4), 8-hydroxycudraxanthone G (6), garcinone C (7), cudraxanthone G (8), and (-)-epicatechin (9) were isolated from the EtOAc-soluble fraction of the air-dried pericarps of Garcinia mangostana (family Clusiaceae). Their structures were verified on the basis of spectroscopic data interpretation as well as comparison with the literature. The cytotoxic and antimicrobial activities of the new compound were assessed using sulforhodamine B (SRB) and agar disk diffusion assays, respectively. Compound 5 showed significant cytotoxic potential against epithelial lung carcinoma (A549) and breast carcinoma (MCF7) cell lines with IC50s 3.0 and 4.2 M, respectively, compared to doxorubicin (0.74 and 0.41 M, respectively).

Spazio Tempo by Gio Pistone in Ancona, Italy "IndyWatch Feed Arts"

Gio Pistone confronted this particular structure taking inspiration from its peculiarities The space recalls that of an Etruscan tomb, something sacred which is in open contrast with the profane character of the environment, an abandoned car park in the centre of Ancona, Italy. In the centre of the painting you can see two subjects side by side, which takes it to another level and it makes a third figure emerge from the space Both sides feature two sphinxes who are protecting the place, a typical tomb archetype belonging to different cultures.

The idea of developing the intervention thinking about the structure as a tomb, leaded me to a reflection on the infinite, on the past and the future, with the space that somehow becomes sacred, dissolving the sense of time and space as we know it. In order to resume this concept, I painted the symbol of space and time on the ground, a symbol of the ephemeral that I invented.

Artist tells us that working in the space was particularly hard, despite the surface not being that big. The main difficulty was the weather, a cold Gio never felt before, which now pushes her to avoid wall paintings from December to March in Europe and makes her spend those months working in the studio rather than outdoor Unless the wall is in Mexico.

Check out more shots below and stay tuned for more updates from Italy!

Russian Airbase Bombed By 13 Homemade Drones "IndyWatch Feed Survival"

homemadedrone

In the early morning hours of January 6, a Russian airbase in Syria was bombed by homemade drones. Russian forces came under attack by a massive application of unmanned aerial vehicles, says the Russian Ministry of Defence.

According to reports, 13 small drones descended on Russian forces, but none of them did any significant damage. Seven were destroyed by anti-aircraft defenses and the others were brought down using electronic countermeasures to hijack or jam the drones controls and land them intact. The captured aircraft seem crudely made, with a wooden undercarriage and plastic sheeting, and powered by a small liquid-fuel engine. The drones carried several locally made bombs fitted with 3D printed plastic fins under their wings.

The Russian Defense Ministry has reported that the swarm of GPS-guided drones carrying improvised explosives were very high-tech. Ten of the 13 drones aimed themselves at Russias Hmeymim air base and three more headed for a logistics and supply base near the Syrian city of Tartus.

One of the homemade drones the Russians alleged attacked their airbase.

One of the homemade drones the Russians alleged attacked their airbase

According to the Russians, six of the drones were owned by an electronic warfare specialist and diverted from the attack. Of that six, three were successfully collected for examination but the remainder detonated after landing. The Russians report the other seven were blown up midair by a Pantsir-S anti-aircraft missile system.

Currently, the Russian military experts are analyzing the construction, technical filling and improvised explosives of the captured UAVs, said the statement. Having decoded the data recorded o...

The legacy of the Thomas Fire: California mudslides kill at least 13 people in area already ravaged by the biggest wildfire in the States history "IndyWatch Feed Uncanny"

California mudslides have killed at least 13 people in the area already ravaged by the biggest wildfire in the States history.
Mudslides, boulders and tons of debris killed at least 13 people on Tuesday in communities along Californias scenic coastline ravaged by a series of intense wildfires that burned off protective vegetation last month.
Rescue workers in southern California are searching for survivors.
More than 30 miles (48km) of the main coastal road have been closed and police said the scene looked like a World War One battlefield.

A group of 300 people are reportedly trapped in Romero Canyon neighbourhood east of Santa Barbara, with rescue efforts due to resume at daybreak.
The death toll is expected to rise, according to the BBC.
Emergency workers using search dogs and helicopters rescued dozens of people stranded in mud-coated rubble in the normally pristine area, sandwiched between the ocean and the sprawling Los Padres National Forest, about 110 miles north of Los Angeles.
Marc Phillips slogged up and down the streets of Montecito Tuesday in his mud-caked jeans, marveling at the devastation.
Phillips pointed at areas on Parra Grande Road, where homes used to be.
It looks like there was never a house there, but it was, he said.
It was that kind of day in one neighborhood in this upscale Santa Barbara County coastal city, where waves of mud destroyed homes and killed several people.
That some neighborhoods had been threatened by the Thomas fire just weeks earlier made it hard for some people to process the twin disasters.
Theres never been anything like this, a victim said.
Mud from a swollen creek slammed into homes in the 300 block of Hot Springs Road and nearby streets.
The area was not directly in the Thomas fire burn zone, officials said...

Dortmund attack leads to increased immigration control of capitalists "IndyWatch Feed Satire"

A ban on migrants from capitalist countries has followed revelations that the attack on the Borussia Dortmund team bus was linked to fundamentalist market trading. Prosecutors say that the perpetrator sought to reduce the share price of the football club by injuring some of its players and staff, after becoming radicalised by reading Philip Greens autobiography.

Initially, far-right groups, much of the media and Donald Trump had used blind prejudice to assume that the attack was by Muslim terrorists, and was somehow related to the German policy on admitting Syrian migrants. As a result of this assumption proving to be false, their view of Islam has changed completely and many of the current immigration controls worldwide are set to be lifted.

In their place will come immigration controls which assume that all financiers, entrepreneurs, stockbrokers, hedge fund managers and venture capitalists should be treated as complete bastards, although most members of the population already hold this view. It is considered that this will be closer to fairness than labelling all Muslims as terrorists.

How Reading Increases Your Emotional Intelligence & Brain Function: The Findings of Recent Scientific Studies "IndyWatch Feed Arts"

Image by Sheila Sund, via Flickr Commons

Reading availeth much, to borrow an old phrase from the King James Bible. To read is to experience more of the world than we can in person, to enter into the lives of others, to organize knowledge according to useful schemes and categories. Or, at least it can be. Much recent research strongly suggests that reading improves emotional and cognitive intelligence, by changing and activating areas of the brain responsible for these qualities.

Is reading essential for the survival of the species? Perhaps not. Humans have been reading and writing for only about 5000 yearstoo short for major evolutionary changes, writes Greg Miller in Science. We got by well enough for tens of thousands of years before written language. But neuroscientists theorize that reading rewires areas of the brain responsible for both vision and spoken language. Even adults who learn to read late in life can experience these effects, increasing "functional connectivity with the visual cortex," some researchers have found, which may be "the brain's way of filtering and fine-tuning the flood of visual information that calls for our attention" in the modern world.

This improved communication between areas of the brain might also represent an important intervention into developmental disorders. One Carnegie Mellon study, for example, found that "100 hours of intensive reading instruction improved children's reading skills and also increased the quality of... compromised white matter to normal levels." The findings, says Thomas Insel, director of the National Institute of Mental Health, suggest "an exci...

Man simultaneously tasered & tear gassed by French cops turns into fireball (DISTURBING VIDEO)
Bodycam footage of an altercation between an already injured man and French police captures the moment the suspect burst into flames after being simultaneously tear gassed and tasered. The video has been making rounds online.

The shocking video was captured by the bodycam of one of the officers involved in the incident, which dates back to July 2013, but has surfaced on social media only this week.

The video shows a shirtless and visibly agitated man with one of his arms covered in blood moving towards officers while insisting he had done nothing wrong. Although the man does not appear to be overtly aggressive, he repeatedly taunts the officers and refuses to obey when told to stop and put the hands behind his back.

Did I attack you!? Get your hands off me! Dont touch me! No, no, dont touch me. Motherf**er, are you gonna arrest me!? the man is heard saying.

Police initially try to calm the man down, with one of the officers saying: You dont need to be scared ... Call an ambulance, he cannot stay like that.

However, as the man begins hurling insults at the officers, goading them to use a taser, their patience apparently wears thin. Were gonna bring him in for contempt of cop! says an officer, as the situation escalates quickly.

Shortly afterwards, one of the officers strikes the mans legs several times with a baton, while two others fire tear gas and a stun gun at the same time. The combination causes the man to burst into flames.

The officers then pin the man to the ground in an attempt to put out the fire. The audio record indicates the incident was a freak accident, not a deliberate action by police, as one of the officers can be heard shouting: Who gassed him?!...

Bitcoin Price Watch; Heres Where Were Looking This Morning "IndyWatch Feed Crypto"

We are closing in on the end of the week and things are particularly bleak right now in the cryptocurrency space as a whole. We noted last night that it looked as though price was finally staging something of a recovery and, with regards to the bitcoin price in particular, we saw the reaching and subsequent breaking of a number of key resistance levels which we felt might be able to hold as support.

As it turned out, we were wrong.

Price did break a couple of key resistance levels but has since fallen back through these levels to collapse towards current levels in and around $13,000 apiece considerably off end of the year highs from back in 2017.

Where things go from here is anybodys guess.

We are going to reiterate something of a bullish bias, based on the fact that at current levels bitcoin looks cheap as to recent pricing. In turn, this should serve to attract some value seeking capital and, by proxy, push price back to the upside.

This is speculative, of course, and we have to be ready for whatever happens.

So, as we move into the session today, lets try and get some levels in place that we can use moving forward. As ever, take a quick look at the chart below before we get started so as to get an idea where things stand. The chart is a one-minute candlestick chart and it has our primary range overlaid in green.

As the chart shows, then, the range we are looking at for the session today comes in as defined by support to the downside at 13258 and resistance to the upside at 13378.

We will look for a close above resistance to validate an upside entry towards a target of 13480. Conversely, a close below support will have us in short towards 13160.

How Pharma Uses the Charge of Stigma to Sell Drugs "IndyWatch Feed Health"

From The Epoch Times: Many advocacy groups claiming to combat the stigma of mental illness are actually front groups that represent the interests of pharmaceutical companies.

The elevation of everyday symptoms to mental illness and accusation that sufferers are victims who experience stigma is the best thing that ever happened to Pharma. The charges have enabled it to aggregate and co-opt patients into lobbying groups that appear grassroots for its high-priced, psychiatric drugs. While these groups say they fight the stigma of mental illness, they actually spend their time fighting lawmakers and insurers, at the behest of Pharma, for payment of high-priced drugs. When insurers balk at reimbursing patients for new prescription medications, says the Los Angeles Times, these groups typically swing into action, rallying sufferers to appear before public and consumer panels [and] contact lawmakers.'

Neoliberalism Drives Increase in Perfectionism Among College Students "IndyWatch Feed Health"

In their recent examination of perfectionism in college students published in the Psychological Bulletin, Thomas Curran, of the University of Bath, and Andrew P. Hill, of York St. John University, identify upward trends in perfectionist attitudes and behaviors among young adults in the United States, Canada, and the United Kingdom. Additionally, they link increases in perceived pressures from others, increased expectations of others, and increased self-directed pressures to a variety of cultural and contextual trends including the emergence of neoliberalism, the rise of meritocracy, and altered parental pressures.

Although past research has explored correlates of perfectionism and smaller-scale environmental factors associated with the development of patterns of perfectionism, Curran and Hills systems-level meta-analysis accounts for bigger-picture components of these alarming patterns.

Dimensions Student Fashion Show at College of DuPage 2017

Countering the common misconception that todays college students are more self-absorbed than those of decades past, one recent study found modest declines in rates of narcissism in college students. Although self-imposed pressure may be increasing (its effects, crippling), and a self-compassion deficit has been well documented among Western youth, there is evidence that the narcissism epidemic may be no more than a myth. It is worth considering the possibility that some of the pressures that overwhelm college students and heighten perfectionist tendencies may be misinterpreted as narcissism. Perfectionism may look like a characteristic of self-absorption on an individual level, but Curran and Hill posit that it may be a symptom of the impo...

It seems everyone with some money to spare wants to get involved in cryptocurrency mining. Calvin Ayre is a very outspoken supporter of Bitcoin Cash. As a result, he aims to set up a new BCH mining venture in very near future. How all of this will affect the future of this altcoin, has yet to be determined. Right now, it seems evident this is positive news, although most specifics regarding this venture remain unknown. Ayre not opting for Bitcoin mining also sends a very clear signal to that community.

Most people in the cryptocurrency world know the individual by the name of Calvin Ayre. He has built up quite a reputation over the past few years. All of that aside, Ayre is also a very outspoken supporter of Bitcoin Cash. Similar to most other enthusiasts, he feels BCH is the real Bitcoin. While everyone is entitled to their own opinion, sometimes you need to put the money where your mouth is. That is exactly what the Antiguan citizen aims to do in the coming months and years.

Calvin Ayre and Bitcoin Cash

More specifically, he aims to create a new Bitcoin Cash mining venture. Given the appeal BCH currently has, that seems like a smart business decision. Moreover, no one can deny mining BCH is quite profitable with the right equipment and cheap electricity. Calvin Ayre is not just investing in the hardware side of things either. There are significant investments in software-based tools to prop up the Bitcoin Cash hashrate in the future.

Moreover, it seems the team has other big plans for the Bitcoin Cash ecosystem moving forward. The next big step comes in the form of improving merchant adoption. This will be done through a dedicated marketing campaign, which is scheduled to take off in the very near future. Educating retailers on why cryptocurrencies matter is an important step forward for the industry as a whole. Moreover, it will help highlight some of the benefits Bitcoin Cash brings to the table.

W.H. Auden on the Political Power of Art and the Crucial Difference Between Party Issues and Revolutionary Issues "IndyWatch Feed Arts"

In our age, the mere making of a work of art is itself a political act.

W.H. Auden on the Political Power of Art and the Crucial Difference Between Party Issues and Revolutionary Issues

To be a thinking, feeling, creative individual in a mass society too often unthinking and unfeeling in its conformity is to find oneself again and again at odds with the system yet impelled to make out of those odds alternative ends to envision other landscapes of possibility, other answers, other questions yet unasked. Because that is what artists do, a certain political undertone inheres in all art. Chinua Achebe knew this when he observed in his fantastic forgotten conversation with James Baldwin: Those who tell you Do not put too much politics in your art are not being honest. If you look very carefully you will see that they are the same people who are quite happy with the situation as it is What they are saying is dont upset the system.

What it means to be an artist inside but not trapped by the system and to labor at improving it from within is what beloved poet W.H. Auden (February 21, 1907September 29, 1973) examines in one of the thirty-four splendid essays in his indispensable 1962 collection The Dyers Hand (public library), which also gave us Auden on writing, originality, and how to be a good reader and what it really means to be a scholar.

This Man Gave Up Coffee, Sugar, Dairy, and Gluten for An Entire Month Heres What Happened "IndyWatch Feed Spiritual"

Lachlan Brown is like me and you he loves to eat. But after traveling for six months and subsisting on a diet of french fries, coke, and beer, his unhealthy habits started to show. Brown wrote on IdeaPod:

[] recently I noticed (and several girls told me) that my stomach had grown considerably large. So I checked the weight scales and surprise, surprise, Id gained 7 kilos (28 lbs) in 6 months.

Brown was so surprised, he had few reservations when an email popped up challenging him to give up soda, alcohol, sugar, gluten, fruit juice, coffee, eggs, and dairy for an entire month. Because the foods are full of additives that adversely affect health, as well as contribute to inflammation, the experimenter decided to give them up for 30 days.

Credit: Lachlan Brown

What did he eat?

As Brown noted, he stuck to basically organic foods: vegetables, chicken, pork, fruit, rice, and potatoes. He wrote that hes not much of a foodie, so was comfortable with a plain diet.

One thing he did prioritize was eating large amounts of vegetables, salads, and meat every day. I assume those are at least safe, he joked. While working on the computer, Brown drank green tea. In fact, he consumed about four to five green teas per day.

The First Few Days

During the first few days, Brown constantly felt hungry. He also felt as if his energy was depleted.

Before this, I was having about 3 coffees a day, plus at least one Coke-Cola.

Sugar and caffeine had been stimulating his adrenals, so their absence resulted in a lag. Fortunately, this went away after a few days.

Knowing what not to build is the most crucial part of modern software development.

One of the most prominent mistakes made by development teams is doing too much work.

Last time you were in crunch mode on a project, did you think this is going great? Crunch time is the penance we pay for the poor decisions we made earlier in the project. In particular, the decision to do too much work.

I have spent many years architecting and developing enterprise software. I cut my teeth with an internship at HP and survived a harrowing stint at an imploding start-up before moving on to a more stable career track. I spent several years working at Stanford University and have since become the Assistant Director of Architecture at UCLA Research Information Systems.

In this role I lead enterprise software development efforts, particularly the implementation of micro-services, to support research administration processes. I have learned a lot, through the school of hard knocks, about what does not work in a collaborative software development process.

Avoiding work saved my bacon

Years ago I found myself leading a 6-month rewrite of a 5-year project. At the end of the six months, we would either have a successful release or the chance to iterate on our resumes.

We had two options: work ten times as fast as the previous teamwhich had already been putting in 70+ hour weeksor avoid most of the work. We avoided most of the work.

Bacon. (Photo by Andrew Ridley on Unsplash)

We achieved this by aggressively limiting the scope. The customer, though, would only tolerate so much feature reduction. They had been waiting for five years and werent going to accept a skeleton of a product.

The rest of the scope restriction came from within. The team re-structured the product architecture to reuse third-party packages wherever we could. Out went the bespoke logger. Gone was the custom expression-trees framework. Goodbye, home-brew object-relational mapper. Hello, free open-source software.

I did not have to update my resume.

Decentralized Exchange DEEX to Start Token Sale on January 10, 2018 "IndyWatch Feed Crypto"

DEEX, a decentralized financial ecosystem based on the BitShares 2.0 platform, is all set to start its token sale campaign on January 10. This exchange offers functionalities comparable to the centralized exchanges without their typical shortcomings.

January 10, 2017 DEEX, a uniquely designed decentralized financial exchange, is pleased to announce that their token sale will start on January 10. DEEX has already successfully closed presale at the end of 2017 and raised 3410 ETH within a month.

This is a reliable and convenient platform where individuals can quickly trade, buy or sell cryptocurrencies using the fiat currencies available in their countries. To start with, DEEX is offering more than ten different cryptocurrencies including Bitcoin, Ethereum, and many other altcoins.

With the rapid growth cryptocurrencies over the last few years, the number of people showing interest in cryptocurrencies has expanded rapidly. In the initial stages of the crypto economic development, centralized exchanges were the more preferred option because they are easy to use, easy to access, and provide advanced trading functions such as margin trading, stop-loss, lending and others.  However, these centralized systems are exposed to a number of risks such as security threats, unfair competition, a danger of sanctions, political factors, and much more. Till date, the amount of stolen customer funds from centralized exchanges amounts to almost $500 million.

DEEX promises to solve this problem by building the worlds first decentralized exchange with functional benefits close to a centralized exchange, but without its permanent security threats and sanction risks. It also provides the clients complete control over their fund. The core of this decentralized ecosystem is the BitShares 2.0 (Graphene) blockchain, an extremely fast and reliable platform with not a single hacking record since its creation.

Technically speaking, BitShares 2.0 is a high-tech, decentralized, blockchain based platform which allows to create highly efficient financial smart contracts for all areas of economic activity that are used in the global internet space to provide services. Some of its key benefits include up to 100,000 transactions per second, cryptocurrencies trading with a stable price, dynamic account permissions, recurring and schedule payments, referral rewards programs, and much more.

Powered by its robust system architecture, DEEX users will enjoy several benefits including

  • A platform for safe ICO conduct in conjunction with the decentralized escrow toolkit from descrow.org.
  • A platform for creating a decentralized transparent blockchain system for cryptofund managed by DEEX professional traders
  • Cryptocurrency debit ca...

Full weekly report from Ben. I will add that the following Through the Looking Glass Kp blog posts may be helpful in understanding some of the rabbit holes Benjamin mentions Post 1, Post 2.

The ongoing war over the control of the financial system, and thus control over the future of the planet, is reaching a dangerous crescendo, multiple sources agree the U.S. military used SpaceX to launch their secret Zuma satellite, Pentagon sources say. This ElectroMagnetic Pulse (EMP) satellite was launched as the U.S. governments January 31st payment deadline looms, and will be used against North Korea, the sources say. Since North Korea is a proxy and is really too analog to be affected by an EMP attack, this is clearly a veiled threat at the Swiss controllers who hollowed out the U.S. and built up China.

50% Tax Rate could seriously delay next Gary Barlow album "IndyWatch Feed Satire"

'If you stay by my side, we can rule the world,' says Ed BallsEd Balls announcement that he would reinstate the 50% tax rate has raised fresh concerns about top talent leaving Britain should Labour return to power at the next election.

Responding to rumours that pop star Gary Barlow had been looking at property in Dublin following the shadow chancellors announcement, Berkshire housewife Sharon Rigby, 36, commented, It would be a complete disaster for me. My husbands many affairs, coupled with my 3 pre-school children that I secretly hate has left a huge hole in my life that can only be filled by listening to Gary Barlow albums.

He may look more like an assistant manager of a small firm of mortgage brokers these days, but apart from Mumsnet and Gin, hes all I have left. Please Mr Balls, dont take him away from me.

Expressing sympathy for Mrs Rigby, Treasury Secretary Said Javid explained; This could be just one of the many dire consequences of Labours tax hike. Even the most conservative estimates suggest that Paul Daniels would have to operate on a drastically reduced touring schedule under Labour. And Jim Davidson may have to give up live performances completely after the next election. Is that the sort of Britain you want, Ed Balls? One where Jim Davidson makes no public appearances for the rest of the decade?

We tried contacting a number of right leaning light entertainment celebrities from the 70s and 80s but they were all strangely unavailable for comment

Scientists Have Finally Found the Root Cause of Autism "IndyWatch Feed Uncanny"

Sure, we have heard tons and tons of different things about what may or may not be causing autism, but this new study seems to have a good idea. Could our brain connections be to blame?

This study comes from researchers from Washington University and was published in the journal Nature Communications. It links a defective gene to autism and how it influences the way that neurons connect and communicate with one another in the brain. These researchers found that rodents who lack this gene form too many connections between brain neurons and struggle with learning.

Senior author Azad Bonni, the Edison Professor of Neuroscience and head of the Department of Neuroscience at Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis said in a statement:

This study raises the possibility that there may be too many synapses in the brains of patients with autism.

You might think that having more synapses would make the brain work better, but that doesnt seem to be the case. An increased number of synapses creates miscommunication among neurons in the developing brain that correlates with impairments in learning, although we dont know how.

Patients with autism may be carrying a gene mutation that prevents one of their ubiquitin genes from working as it should. Ubiquitin ligases function like a working order and tell the rest of the cell what to do with the tagged proteins. To understand the role of these genes in brain development this team removed the gene from young mice.

In the mice that this gene had been removed from learning was an issue especially with motor skills. They were able to walk and appear coordinated until it came time to put them to the test. While more research still needs to be done this is a very interesting find.

Its possible that excessive connections between neurons contribute to autism.

More work needs to be done to verify this hypothesis in people, but if that turns out to be true, then you can start looking at ways of controlling the number of synapses. It could potentially benefit not just the people who have these rare mutations in ubiquitin genes but other patients with autism.

What do you think about all of this? I for one am excited to see what comes of this. This is not something unheard of, even in 2014, children with autism were found to have extra synapses.

How to use Touch ID for a quicker, easier login to your app "IndyWatch Feed Education"

It is a common observation that users drop off a little on your login screen. This is how I tackle my facebook addiction . This tutorial teaches you how to utilize Touch ID for a faster and easier login. Ill take you through the steps soon, just let me brief you a little.

Most apps use Touch ID as a second degree authentication. This tutorial is NOT about providing a second degree authentication (although you can do that too if you read this article). Its about using Touch ID to make that server call to login the user.

Now how do you get the users credentials from their thumb print to make that server call? This is where Keychain service comes in. When the user signs up or logs into your app for the first time, save the credentials to your apps keychain. Next time, when the user logs out and then visits the login screen again, flash a popup asking them to login using Touch ID. When the user provides a valid Touch ID, get those user credentials you saved earlier to the keychain, make your API call, and Boom!.

So there are two steps involved here:

  • First, you need to save the users credentials to the keychain. You can do this when the user signs up or when they log into your app for the first time.
  • Second, use Touch ID to verify the user, then retrieve their credentials from the keychain service.

Im using KeychainPasswordItem, a nice wrapper over Keychain available on developer.apple.com here. They have a very good, detailed example on how to use this generic keychain. Go have a look.

As part of the first step, use the call method below with the users email as account and password when the user signs up and logs in.

https://medium.com/media/db2748a3f56f7e466a4e50139e5c33c4/href

We are storing the users email to UserDefaults to be used later. It would be better if you flash a popup to ask the users permission to use this feature. Im skipping that part for this tutorial.

Use Touch ID to access the keychain

To use Touch ID, you first need to add the LocalAuthentication framework to your project binaries. You can do this by going to Project > Build Phases > Link Binary With Libraries:

Watch the History of the World Unfold on an Animated Map: From 200,000 BCE to Today "IndyWatch Feed Arts"

"Where are you from?" a character at one point asks Babe, the hapless protagonist of the Firesign Theatre's classic comedy album How Can You Be in Two Places at Once When You're Not Anywhere at All. "Nairobi, ma'am," Babe replies. "Isn't everybody?" Like most of that psychedelic radio troupe's pieces of apparent nonsense, that memorable line contains a truth: trace human history back far enough and you inevitably end up in east Africa, a point illustrated in reverse by the video above, "A History of the World: Every Year," which traces the march of humanity between 200,000 BCE and the modern day.

To a dramatic soundtrack which opens and closes with the music of Hans Zimmer, video creator Ollie Bye charts mankind's progress out of Africa and, ultimately, into every corner of all the continents of the world.

Real, documented settlements, cities, empires, and entire civilizations rise and fall as they would in a computer game, with a constantly updated global population count and list of the civilizations active in the current year as well as occasional notes about politics and diplomacy, society and culture, and inventions and discoveries.

All that happens in under 20 minutes, a pretty swift clip, though not until the very end does the world take the political shape we know today, including even the late latecomer to civilization that is the United States of America. Bye's many other videos tend to focus on the history of other parts of the world, such as India, the British Isles, and that cradle of our species, the African continent, all of which we can now develop first-hand familiarity with in this age of unprecedented human mobility. Though the condition itself takes the question "Where are you from?" to a degree of complication unknown not only millennia but also centuries and even decades ago, at...

Bay Area News Group Teams Up with NBA Star Klay Thompson "IndyWatch Feed Literature"

As part of his pregame ritual, NBA All-Star and Golden State Warrior Klay Thompson makes sure to sit down, relax and do one thing: read the print newspaper. Naturally, when the Bay Area News Group (BANG) decided to seek out a local sports hero to tell their story, they knew exactly where to look.

As the groups brand ambassador, Thompson will play an important role in a yearlong print, digital and outdoor marketing campaign showcasing its regional brands: The Mercury News, East Bay Times and Marin Independent Journal.

The main message of the campaign is to start a new ritual and read the paper.

Klay loves living in the Bay Area and he wants to be well-informed about local topics and opportunities, said Olga Mitina, BANG marketing director. We feel the partnership is also a great fit because of what Klay and our readers have in common: they share our commitment to supporting quality journalism in our community.

At Thompsons request, the company will also donate newspapers to Oakland-area schools in an effort to promote literacy and education to young readers.

Klay stands out on and off the court and BANG applauds his commitment, Mitina said. Children and adults emulate himwe hope that translates into fans recognizing how he values reading the news in a busy world with a pro career.

Is Argentina's Peronist Nightmare Finally Over? "IndyWatch Feed Crypto"

When you read the economic history of Argentina, you cry.  I wonder how long this glimmer of hope will last ?  South America has a wonderful history of destroying its currencies over and over again.  In spite of that large populations have become middle class and positioned to prosper provided they can tame their so called gevernments.

The solution has arrived of course and it is Bitcoin. Sooner or later savings will shift into bitcoin and the population will insulate themselves from the local currency game.  At that point governments may actually have to provide services in order to attract taxes.

Better yet we now have a truly promising leader which may help speed things up.
.

Is Argentina's Peronist Nightmare Finally Over?

12/29/2017Federico Fernndez

https://mises.org/wire/argentinas-peronist-nightmare-finally-over

The beginning of the 21st century found Argentina in the midst of a storm.

In 2001 the country was submerged in a deep recession which spiraled into a political crisis after the mid-term elections of October. By the end of that year, the administration led by Fernando de la Ra fell and more than a decade of populist policies followed.

The 90s looked nothing like the early 2000s. After the fall of the Berlin wall, the whole of Latin America, from Mexico to Argentina, experienced the so-called neoliberal wave. In Argentina, neoliberalism meant a series of economic reforms. For instance, the privatization of highly inefficient state monopoliessuch as the one in telecommunications.

It also meant the reduction of public employees, and a relative opening of the economy. But the key issue was a monetary regime named convertibility. The currency board implemented by the then minister of finance, Domingo Cavallo, almost immediately stopped a chronic and decades long inflationary problem which....

Ethereum Classic Price Technical Analysis Can ETC/USD Stay above $30? "IndyWatch Feed Crypto"

Key Highlights

  • Ethereum classic price failed to stay above the $34.00 level and declined against the US Dollar.
  • There was a break below a connecting bullish trend line with support at $34.50 on the hourly chart of the ETC/USD pair (Data feed via Kraken).
  • The pair needs to stay above the $30.00 support level to avoid any further declines.

Ethereum classic price struggled to maintain gains against the US Dollar and Bitcoin. ETC/USD must hold the $30.00 support area to remain to recover back above $35.00.

Ethereum Classic Price Support

There was a nice upside move in ETC price above the $38.00 level recently against the US Dollar. However, the price failed to stay in the bullish zone, moved down and broke the $37.00 and $35.00 support levels. The decline was such that the price moved below the $34.00 level and the 100 hourly simple moving average. It is now showing a few bearish signs since it broke the $32.00 level and tested the $30.00 handle.

During the downside, there was a break below a connecting bullish trend line with support at $34.50 on the hourly chart of the ETC/USD pair. The pair recovered later and is currently moving around the 23.6% Fib retracement level of the last drop from the $39.15 high to $30.46 low. However, the broken support at $34.00 may now act as a resistance along with the 100 hourly SMA. Moreover, the 50% Fib retracement level of the last drop from the $39.15 high to $30.46 low is also around $34.50.

Ethereum Classic Price Technical Analysis ETC USD

Therefore, the $34.00-34.50 level is a major resistance area on the upside. On the downside, the pair needs to stay above the $30.00 level to avoid any more declines in the near term.

Hourly MACD The MACD for ETC/USD is gaining pace in the bearish zone.

Hourly RSI The RSI for ETC/USD is moving lower and is currently around the 30 level.

Understanding the JavaScript call stack "IndyWatch Feed Education"

Photo by Jeremy Thomas on Unsplash

The JavaScript engine (which is found in a hosting environment like the browser), is a single-threaded interpreter comprising of a heap and a single call stack. The browser provides web APIs like the DOM, AJAX, and Timers.

This article is aimed at explaining what the call stack is and why it is needed. An understanding of the call stack will give clarity to how function hierarchy and execution order works in the JavaScript engine.

The call stack is primarily used for function invocation (call). Since the call stack is single, function(s) execution, is done, one at a time, from top to bottom. It means the call stack is synchronous.

The understanding of the call stack is vital to Asynchronous programming (which we will look at in a later article).

In Asynchronous JavaScript, we have a callback function, an event loop, and a task queue. The callback function is acted upon by the call stack during execution after the call back function has been pushed to the stack by the event loop.

But before we jump the gun, let us first attempt to answer the question - What is the call stack?

At the most basic level, a call stack is a data structure that uses the Last In, First Out (LIFO) principle to temporarily store and manage function invocation (call).

Lets break down our definition:

LIFO: When we say that the call stack, operates by the data structure principle of Last In, First Out, it means that the last function that gets pushed into the stack is the first to be pop out, when the function returns.

Let us take a look at a code sample to demonstrate LIFO by printing a stack trace error to the console.

function firstFunction(){
throw new Error('Stack Trace Error');
}
function secondFunction(){
firstFunction();
}
function thirdFunction(){
secondFunction();
}
thirdFunction();

When the code is run, we get an error. A stack is printed showing how the functions are stack on top each other. Take a look at the diagram.

Stack trace error

You will notice that the arrangement of the functions as a stack begins with the firstFunction() (which is the last function that got into the stack, and is popped out to throw the error), followed by the secondFunction(),...

8 Amazing Reasons to Pay Attention to the Sky in 2018 "IndyWatch Feed Uncanny"

On August 21st, 2017 we witnessed a phenomenal sight with the total eclipse of the sun. Dominating the media, experts shared best vantage points and points of safety for all who were interested in taking in the experience, captivating the nation.

In fact, this wasnt the sole event in outer space capturing the attention of the American public. Meteor showers including the recent Geminid Meteors on December 13th attracted views, cameras in hand, determined to capture the event.

We are captivated by the events that occur outside of our own planet, awestruck by the very depth of outer space. Our own galaxy, the Milky Way, is approximately 13.6 billion years old, a number that is hard to comprehend in and of itself, dwarfing any real-life experience that we may hold. Containing anywhere from 100 400 billion stars, we spend an incredible amount of time and energy in our efforts to observe, record and study all that exists around us.

While many of the events that 2018 will likely bring will either be unpredictable, or have yet to be discovered, some events are known to us today. Mark these on your calendar, you dont want to miss them!

#1 Meteor Showers

On any given night you may look into the sky and witness a shooting star. This phenomenon occurs when a piece of debris moves through space, leaving a streak of light in their wake. When a whole stream of debris left by a passing comet is moving through space at the same time, that is what we refer to as a meteor shower. An interesting fact to watch for? During a meteor shower, the meteors will all appear to come from one central point, known as the radiant.  There will be 10 major meteor showers throughout 2018, although not all will be visible due to strong moonlight during various times of the year. The best 4 for viewing will be: Lyrid on April 22nd, Perseid on August 13th, Southern Taurid on November 5th and Geminid on December 14th.

#2 Continued Moon Exploration

What are the downsides of information? "IndyWatch Feed Fertility"

When I returned to my desk after the holidays, I read a fascinating piece in the British Medical Journal by Semsarian and Moynihan (2017) who told the story of John, a 32 year old man whose father had given him an ancestry-based DNA testing kit a couple of Christmases ago. Id like to share three particular elements of this story (which you can read in full for yourself here) because they illustrate some key issues and questions relating to our societys focus on information, screening and testing.

Another case of hypergoogleosis

The first issue relates to the reason for the gift. John had been troubled by earwax since he was a child. He had spent some time googling this, and his googling had led John to understand that excessive earwax may have a genetic explanation. This in turn had led to his father giving John (and also Johns daughter Rebecca) the gift of the ancestry test.

Now I am no stranger to the implications of googling. Readers of this blog and attendees at my workshops and courses may recall that I am married to a prolific googler and spend a lot of my time reassuring him that he hasnt actually developed the latest life-threatening condition whose terrible symptoms have been detailed on wikipedia. Perhaps thats why the first take-home message from the BMJ article for me is that the consequences of knowledge are often far wider-ranging than we might at first think. Thats not to say that we shouldnt ever search on topics that we are curious about, but its worth bearing in mind that there are costs and downsides to the widespread availability of information, especially when it isnt placed within the context of expertise or wisdom.

The worrying problem

Semsarian and Moynihan (2017) go on to discuss how, after getting the information back from the ancestry company, John was then able to access lots of information on his genetic risk for particular diseases. This, like a lot of the information generated by other medical screening tests (including many of those offered in pregnancy) can generate a lot of anxiety. Genetic testing can be incredibly useful if it is used in a specific way, and after someone has received adequate information about the pros and cons and made an inf...

Ripple Price Technical Analysis XRP/USD Bearish U-Turn "IndyWatch Feed Crypto"

Key Highlights

  • Ripple price extended declines and moved below the $1.80 support against the US Dollar.
  • Yesterdays highlighted crucial bearish trend line with current resistance at $1.85 is still in place on the hourly chart of the XRP/USD pair (data source from Kraken).
  • The price continues to move down and it could soon break the 1.60 low to for more losses.

Ripple price faced a lot of selling pressure against the US Dollar and Bitcoin. XRP/USD could accelerate declines and it may soon test or break the $1.50 level.

Ripple Price Decline

It seems like the current bearish pressure is here to stay on Ripple price below $2.00 against the US Dollar. The price was under a lot of pressure and it moved below the $1.80 and $1.70 support levels. The downside move is strong and the price is now below the $1.65 level. Recently, there was a recovery from the $1.6062 swing low with a break of the 23.6% Fib retracement level of the last decline from the $2.38 high to $1.60 low.

However, the upside move was capped by the $2.00 handle. Moreover, the 50% Fib retracement level of the last decline from the $2.38 high to $1.60 low also acted as a resistance. More importantly, yesterdays highlighted crucial bearish trend line with current resistance at $1.85 is still in place on the hourly chart of the XRP/USD pair. It may continue to act as a strong barrier for buyers above $2.00. As long as the price is below the $2.00 handle, it remains at a risk of more losses below $1.60.

Ripple Price Technical Analysis XRP USD

A break below the $1.60 level could open the doors for a test of the $1.50 level. Below the $1.50 level, there is a chance an extension towards the $1.40 level.

Looking at the technical indicators:

Hourly MACD The MACD for XRP/USD is now placed in the bearish zone.

Hourly RSI (Relative Strength Index) The RSI for XRP/USD is heading lower towards the 25 level.

Essential Oils Lower Blood Pressure "IndyWatch Feed Health"

By Dr. Mercola

According to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), approximately 30 percent of Americans have high blood pressure, also called hypertension, and only half of them have their blood pressure under control.1 However, under controversial new guidelines released in November 2017, which advised that high blood pressure should be treated at 130/80 rather than 140/90, nearly 50 percent of Americans would technically be suffering from high blood pressure.2

When your blood pressure is not controlled it may lead to other health conditions, such as cognitive decline, heart disease, stroke and kidney disease. On a global scale, more than 1 billion people suffer from hypertension3 and that number has nearly doubled in the past four decades.4 Nearly 13 percent of all deaths worldwide are attributed to high blood pressure.

The rising numbers of people suffering from hypertension was not lost on the pharmaceutical industry. An increasing number of drugs have been developed in the past decade to control blood pressure, but they come with a laundry list of side effects and negative health problems of their own.

Instead, consider a significant number of natural options, including eliminating lifestyle choices that trigger hypertension and choosing alternative treatments that reduce your blood pressure. One of the easiest and best smelling is using essential oils.

Blood Pressure and What It Means

To fully understand why your choices increase or decrease your blood pressure, its helpful to understand how your blood pressure is measured and how it affects your body.

The traditional method of measuring your blood pressure was developed in 1881 and refined in 1905 when Russian surgeon Dr. Nikolai Korotkoff discovered the difference between systolic and diastolic blood pressure measurements.5 Today, sphygmomanometers measure the difference between the appearance and disappearance of sounds in your arteries, called Korotkoff sounds.

The appearance of the sound, your systolic number, represents the highest pressure through which yo...

Most people, Americans in particular, need to eat more fiber. The evidence suggests a high-fiber diet can help manage your weight,1 which impacts over two-thirds of the population. Even more importantly, researchers have discovered that short-chain fatty acids produced by bacteria that feed on plant fiber are major epigenetic communicators. In other words, they actually communicate with your DNA, thereby providing protection against a number of different diseases.2,3,4

Studies have also confirmed that high-fiber diets help reduce your risk of premature death from any cause5 a side effect linked to a reduction in chronic disease risk. When it comes to boosting your fiber intake, be sure to focus on eating more vegetables, nuts and seeds, not grains, as grains tend to promote insulin and leptin resistance.

Also, research confirms that in order to work, the fiber must be unprocessed.6,7 Processed supplement fiber such as inulin powder does not provide gut bacteria with what they need. Its far better to use a supplement that is processed from sunchokes (Jerusalem artichokes) that inulin is typically extracted from.

Organic whole husk psyllium is a great fiber source, as are sunflower sprouts and fermented vegetables, the latter of which are essentially fiber prelo...

Wednesday 10th January 2018, Zug Switzerland Fresh off a highly successful ICO in which it raised over $31 million from 15,000 participants, trade.io has announced the release date for a semi-decentralized application to verify trade data on the blockchain.  In simple terms, trade.io has developed a method for clients to ensure the data being displayed by their broker has not been tampered with and is 100% raw data.

The application, called BTV or Blockchain Trade Verification, will be displayed via a proprietary dashboard, and can be offered by any broker, using data from any trading platform from any asset class.  BTV utilizes IPFS & the Ethereum blockchain based smart contracts to validate the data.  This will allow any broker offering FX, Crypto, CFDs or equities the ability to provide its clients the ultimate in transparency.

COINTED: PAYCO THE FUTURE OF PAYMENTS "IndyWatch Feed Crypto"

Making digital currency part of everyday lives is any crypto enthusiasts dream. However, implementing cryptocurrency into the current payment systems is often turns infeasible or too costly. PayCo is a payment solution interface that allows clients to pay with crypto and the merchant to receive the payment in fiat.

The problem

Although some vendors and merchants are including crypto in their payment options, there are two major problems slowing down the process. One of them is the volatile value of cryptos. This makes them quite inconvenient as a medium of exchange. The second issue is that among thousands of cryptocurrencies, most stores accept only bitcoin. This is quite limiting as many people hold other kinds of digital currency.

First up: volatility

The fluctuating value of digital currencies, as stated in the latest Bitcoin News, is very attractive for anyone interested in investing. However, when there are costs to cover and budgets to meet, volatility becomes a big risk.

If a merchant accepts payments in crypto, they run the risk that if the value of the digital currency suddenly falls they would not be able to pay bills, suppliers and employees since these expenses are in fiat currencies.

Second: bitcoin is not enough

Most retailers that do go through the hassle to implement crypto in their systems include bitcoin but rarely any other currency. And with more than 1300 different cryptocurrencies, accepting only bitcoin is like opening a fruit store and selling only apples.

The solution

With PayCo customers will be able to pay with bitcoins at the shop or online and the entrepreneur will get money on his bank account if he wants it. It is cheaper and safer than the common credit card payment -Cointeds CEO Christopher Rieder

With PayCo integrating bitcoin into existing cash register systems and online shops is cheap and easy.

Merchants have two options

The first one is for clients who have no payment processing system in place. This option includes a mobile hardware solution together with the interface.

If the client already has a processing system, they need only the interface. With the help of API, the PayCo interface is easily integrated. The product works with cash registers, as well as vending machines and smartphone apps.

Lower risk and more currencies

The biggest advantage of this interface: it allows the client to be charged in crypto and the merchant to get paid in fiat currency. This way, merchants do not need to worry about the value of bit...

Police Raids South Korean Cryptocurrency Exchanges; Prompts Panic Sell "IndyWatch Feed Crypto"

Traders in Asia have a huge influence on cryptocurrency markets. So much so that when news comes out of South Korea of police raids on exchanges and a possible all-out crypto ban the markets take a nose dive.

Two of the largest exchanges in the country and the rest of the world were raided by police and tax inspectors this week. This is not the first time the government has tried to quash the fervor for crypto in the Southeast Asian nation. South Korea is responsible for up to 20% of the global trade in cryptocurrencies so what happens there will have a ripple effect on the markets. Evidence of this can clearly be seen during the Asian trading session this morning as all assets are plummeting as panic selling ensues.

The worlds second largest crypto exchange, Bithumb, was raided this week as staff told reporters that they were asked to disclose paperwork to tax inspectors. Coinone was also targeted in the raids in what appears to be another government fear mongering effort;

A few officials from the National Tax Service raided our office this week. Local police also have been investigating our company since last year, they think what we do is gambling,

Reports have also emerged of banks that offer crypto accounts being raided on accounts of crime prevention. The South Korean government is developing a system that seeks to ban the use of anonymous trading accounts according to local press Yonhap News. Under the measure, only real-name bank accounts and matching accounts at cryptocurrency exchanges can be used for deposits and withdrawals, while the issuance of new virtual accounts to cryptocurrency exchanges will be banned.

The government is also seeking to strengthen requirements of local crypto exchanges to prevent money laundering and toughen punishments for crimes related to virtual currency according to reports.

As usual, the media frenzy followed and a selloff has begun during the Asian session this morning. News outlets such as CNBC misreporting that South Korea has banned trading does not help the matter. All cryptos are in the red at the time of writing with Bitcoin falling 25% from $17,500 to just over $13,000. Ethereum and Litecoin are also retracting but Ripple has taken the biggest hit with a 50% drop in less than a week.

Clampdowns in Korea will always happen, trading has not been banned and there is no need to panic. Smart traders will use these opportunities to take advantages of dips in a market that has already seen an explosive growth in the past month, not so smart ones will panic sell.

How to Use Lavender Lemonade to Reduce Anxiety and Get Rid of Depression "IndyWatch Feed Uncanny"

While we all know there are benefits to essential oils, not many people know that they are safe to ingest. However, we should all be careful when doing so too much of a good thing can be a bad thing.

While many use their essential oils for aromatherapy it is not the only way you can use them. Lavender essential oil is a great way to reduce anxiety and a Korean study actually found that lavender reduced both depression and insomnia in female college students. Another study published in Phytomedicine even went so far as to note that orally administering this oil was just as effective as the drug Lorazepam when it came to treating anxiety disorder in general.

Lavender essential oil has tons of medicinal properties and can benefit even those with headaches and so forth. Below you will find a recipe for one of the most powerful drinks in regards to reducing anxiety. If you like lemonade this one will quickly become your new drink of choice.

Lavender Essential Oil Lemonade (DIY)

Ingredients:

9 Peeled and Juiced Lemons
3 Drops of Lavender Essential Oil
2 Cups of Raw Honey
15 Cups of Water

You can also add in real lavender plants, but if you do so steeping it in the water would be best before getting started.

(Reduce if you only desire to make a little as the amounts above will make quite a lot.)

Directions:

Mix all of these things together in any order you see fit. I suggest adding in the lavender essential oil last as it is easier that way. Once you have finished give it a taste and add more water or more honey as needed. Then, allow it to chill in the fridge for a few hours.

To see this demonstrated on a smaller scale feel free to check out the video below. Have you ever had lavender essential oil lemonade and did you enjoy it? Let us know if you give this a try, we would love to hear about your results.

Ethereum Price Technical Analysis Can ETH/USD Hold 100 SMA "IndyWatch Feed Crypto"

Key Highlights

  • ETH price is currently correcting lower after trading as high as $1379.12 against the US Dollar.
  • There is a descending channel forming with support around the $1200 level on the hourly chart of ETH/USD (data feed via SimpleFX).
  • The pair must hold the $1200 support and the 100 hourly simple moving averages to avoid further declines.

Ethereum price remains supported for more gains against the US Dollar and Bitcoin. ETH/USD has to stay above $1200 and the 100 hourly SMA.

Ethereum Price Support

We recently saw further gains above the $1350 level in ETH price against the US Dollar. The price made a nice upside move and traded as high as $1379.12. Later, a downside move was initiated and the price moved towards the $1200 support. However, further declines were protected and the price moved above the 23.6% Fib retracement level of the last decline from the $1379 high to $1202 low.

There was a push above the $1300 level, but the upside move was capped by the $1320 level. Moreover, there was no close above the 50% Fib retracement level of the last decline from the $1379 high to $1202 low. It failed and started a downside move below $1300. At the moment, there is a descending channel forming with support around the $1200 level on the hourly chart of ETH/USD. The pair may decline further towards the $1220 and $1202 support area.

Ethereum Price Technical Analysis ETH USD

On the downside, the $1202 support and the 100 hourly simple moving average holds a lot of importance. The 100 hourly SMA is at $1180, and it can be seen as a major buy zone. On the upside, ETH buyers need to push the price above the $1300 level and the channel resistance for more upsides.

Hourly MACD The MACD has reduced most of its bullish slope.

Hourly RSI The RSI is now below the 50 and is moving lower.

Major Support Level $1200

Major Resistance Level $1300

WE ARE NOW POISED TO ENTER THIS PHOTON BELT between now and the end of this century. We have completed the full circle and are back at the beginning.

We are going to try to explain to you as best we can what the photon belt is and what its function is. We are going to do this with simple language because all that is simple is much more easily understood by beings of the third dimension, even those who are very evolved or who believe they are very evolved. We are speaking about humans in general and notably about certain scientists.

In the universe, everything functions in cycles. All life obeys two laws: the law of cycles and the law of hierarchies (which is that of the path of ascension). Every human being lives several cycles during his existence, those that carry him higher, and those where he has the impression of having fallen onto Earth with a great weight on his shoulders, whether it be the weight of some experiences or those of pain in his physical body.

Know that each day, even during these cycles, you are always going in the direction of ascension. All of the human family experiences exactly the same phenomenon of cycles. Your Mother Earth experiences it also, as does your solar system, your galaxy, and the entire Universe. These cycles are like small steps that allow all of life to ascend towards the planes and levels of conscious...

The 15 Stages of the Toxic Relationship Between an Empath and a Narcissist "IndyWatch Feed Uncanny"

Opposites attract, and I think temperament is so fundamental that you end up craving someone of the opposite temperament to complete you. Susan Cain

The relationship and attraction between a narcissist and an empath is one that has captivated psychologists a toxic and unbalanced dynamic created by the controlling and self-centered narcissist meeting up with their perfect victim. Always the healer, highly sensitive empaths are susceptible to the damaged and destructive narcissist. Lacking the boundaries to effectively protect themselves, they welcome their new partner, complete with their drama, lies, and manipulation, into their lives for what is sure to be a rollercoaster of emotions. Unprepared and unaware, the empath is the one who pays the price in this matchup.

Do you believe that you may currently be trapped somewhere along the course of this toxic journey? Recognizing and acknowledging your situation is the first step to walking free, sparing yourself the pain and heartache that waits at the end.

These are the 15 stages of the toxic relationship between a narcissist and an empath:

1. Masters of manipulation, the narcissist recognizes who they need to be in order to win the heart o their newest victim. Charming, affectionate and compassionate it doesnt take long for the empath to fall in love, handing over their heart.

2. The narcissist continues their lies an manipulation, taking the empath through a whirlwind romance. Sweeping them off their feet with grand, romantic gestures, they create the illusion of a strong, unbreakable bond between the two. This makes the empath feel safe and secure, dropping their guard.

3. The narcissist creates a relationship of dependence, slowly draining the empath of any sense of independence, strength or confidence. The empath is left believing that they cant possibly face this l...

Footage Shows Twitter Execs Boasting About Leaking Trumps Private Messages "IndyWatch Feed Uncanny"

Project Veritas has released bombshell footage showing anti-Trump Twitter executives plotting to intentionally leak President Trumps private messages to the public.

The undercover footage released Wednesday features a senior Twitter network engineer boasting about how hed like to bring the President down by illegally peering into his personal DMs and handing them over to the Department of Justice.

The footage (below) not only reveals the culture of anti-Trump bias at the social media giant, but also their ability to peer into everyones account information on a whim.

From Project Veritas website:

A Project Veritas undercover investigation has revealed a senior network security engineer at Twitter stating that his company is more than happy to turn over the private communications and deleted tweets of President Donald Trump to the Department of Justice.

If true, it is yet unknown whether Twitter is voluntarily disclosing this sensitive information or acting under a court order.

Twitter is currently in the midst of defending itself from left-leaning criticism that President Trump hasnt been removed from the enormous media platform for violations of Twitters Terms of Service.

The fact is, even if Haynes was just speculating about helping Justice, his admission shows a clear and dangerous political bias at the highest levels of Twitter, says Project Veritas founder and President James OKeefe in the video.

The question is: by Twitter giving private information about the President to the Justice Department, are they breaking the law, betraying a trust, following...

Signs of Intuition & Psychic Abilities in Children "IndyWatch Feed Spiritual"

by Lindsay; thedailyawe.com

Children as young as three years old (and sometimes even younger, if theyre particularly verbal!) have been known to share stories they remember from their past lives. Not all children remember their past lives, or feel the need to express them. All children are born with a clear channel to Spirit. After all, theyre much closer to having been on the Other Side and are still in tune with that energy.

My daughter Evelyn began speaking of memories of her time in Heaven when she was about 2.5 years old; things surprised me and lead me to believe she is tuned into the spirit world. My daughter has consistently spoken of choosing me to be her mom and has shared some of the reasons why she chose me to be her mom in this incarnation. Ive written before about how souls choose their parents. Even as someone who practices listening to my intuition & guides daily, her clear channel astonishes me.

If you suspect your child is intuitive, you are likely right. Here are some signs your child is intuitive:

  • Able to read others. Intuitive children have great instincts about people they seem to know who is good and bad as soon as they meet them. A couple of months ago my daughter met someone who has a history of being a nasty person. Although shed never met or heard a story about this person, my daughter immediately felt this persons energy and upon leaving their house said, I really dont like (name). Intuitive kids also have a finely tuned bullshit meter they know instantly if someone is being honest or lying. Nothing gets past my daughter.

Teary Facts About the Science of Crying "IndyWatch Feed Spiritual"

by Dr. Mercola; mercola.com

While many animals "cry" by making vocalizations as emotional expressions or sounds of pain, humans are the only animals that shed tears.

Your tears may be happy or sad, or they may be described clinically as lacrimation, particularly to describe the flow of tears that may occur when you cut an onion or get a few grains of sand in your eyes.

No matter the cause of your tears, the scientific process that turns on the "waterworks" is the same. You have a lacrimal gland located between your eyeball and eyelid, which produces tears documented as emotion-related.

When you blink, the fluid gets dispersed over your eye, then drains via your lacrimal punctum (and ultimately through your nose, which is why crying makes your nose run). If your tears are voluminous, however, they will overflow this drainage system and cascade down your cheeks. [1]

The Three Types of Tears

Your body produces three different types of tears. There's the basal variety, which are made as a form of lubrication and protection for your eyes. These are constantly secreted in tiny quantities (about one gram over a 24-hour period) and coat your eyes when you blink. [2]

You also produce reflex tears. These are another form of protection and are released in response to irritants, such as wind, dust, smoke or cut onions. The third form of tears emotional or "psychic" tears as they're sometimes called are arguably the most talked about and the most mysterious.

British Woman Beats Rare Cancer With 2 Teaspoons Of This Per Day "IndyWatch Feed Spiritual"

by Scott OReilly; The Alternative Daily

Dieneke Ferguson might not be alive if it werent for the spice turmeric, which has been used for centuries as an herbal remedy and to flavor meals (especially curry).

Turmeric helps woman beat cancer

Ten years ago, this British woman (who is now 67) was diagnosed with a rare but deadly disease known as multiple myeloma, which is a form of cancer involving plasma cells in the blood. With this condition, the white blood cells, which are normally part of the bodys defenses, become cancerous and wreak havoc on the bones, the immune system, and the kidneys.

Initially, Ferguson tried three rounds of chemotherapy and endured four stem cell transplants, but to no avail. Describing her plight she explained that I have been on all sorts of toxic drugs and the side-effects were terrifying. At one point I lost my memory for three days, and in 2008 two of the vertebrae in my spine collapsed so I couldnt walk. They injected some kind of concrete into my spine to keep it stable.

In desperation, Ferguson decided to try treating herself with a golden spice called curcumin, which is a naturally occurring chemical compound in the herb turmeric after she had heard about how another woman (named Margaret) had used it successfully to treat her myeloma.

As China's ban on ivory goes into effect, NPR's Ari Shapiro talks to professor George Wittemyer of Colorado State University about the impacts on the global ivory trade and what it might mean for elephant poaching in Africa.

For the past few years, China has been steadily cutting back on the legal ivory trade. And as of this week, it is completely illegal to buy or sell ivory in China. China's the largest ivory market in the world, and conservationists hope that the ban will lower the price of ivory, which would make elephant poaching less profitable. Earlier today I spoke with George Wittemyer, a conservation biologist at Colorado State University who studies the ivory trade. He said China's crackdown over the last few years has already lowered ivory prices, and the outright ban should lower them even more.

Bitcoin Price Technical Analysis for 01/11/2018 A Bit More Bullish Momentum "IndyWatch Feed Crypto"

Bitcoin Price Key Highlights

  • Bitcoin price is still within its ascending channel on the 1-hour time frame and has bounced off support.
  • A bit more bullish momentum can be seen as price broke past a small descending trend line.
  • Technical indicators, however, are signaling that bearish pressure could kick in soon.

Bitcoin price looks ready to resume its climb to the channel resistance but there are indications of bearish pressure.

Technical Indicators Signals

The 100 SMA is crossing below the longer-term 200 SMA on the 1-hour chart to signal that the path of least resistance is to the downside. In other words, sellers could regain the upper hand and lead to another test of the nearby support at $14,000.

Stochastic is also pointing down to indicate that selling pressure is present while RSI appears to be turning back south from its climb. A break below the channel support could mark the start of a longer-term selloff.

But if bulls continue to charge, the price could test the area of interest around $16,000 next then make its way up to the resistance at $17,500 or higher.

Market Factors

Dollar demand has taken a hit after China hinted that it might trim its holdings of US Treasuries. However, it has also been reported that China ordered closing down of bitcoin mining operations as a step further in curbing cryptocurrency activity in the mainland.

Regulation is a pain in the neck for bitcoin price these days as ETF applications have been withdrawn in facing SEC scrutiny while South Korea continues to clamp down activity as well. With that, traders appear more interested in other altcoins that are cheaper and facing fewer barriers.

US PPI is due next and could provide an indication of how inflation readings might turn out, thereby influencing Fed tightening expectations. Downbeat results could mean more dollar weakness, which bitcoin price could take advantage of, while upside surprises could trigger a channel breakdown.

Every new year most party late into the night, get intoxicated by various methods, make resolutions only to break them within the week.

Are we a blessing to life?

Or are we empty seeking outside of ourselves for love, joy, bliss, abundance etc.
Many relationships are splitting during these times for various reasons, some couples just cant do another year of dysfunction and the exponential increase in energies just wont allow it.

In the macrocosm our dysfunctional relationship with society and the planet also is coming up for healing.

The uncovering, chaos, changes on every level are the symptoms of a planetary awakening.

The manifestation time between cause and effect is happening much quicker going into the days of instant karma. What took years is happening in days, what took days is happening in hours.

We have talked about Universal Law, The Quickening, and the 9th wave. This is all having a major impact on humanity and the Earth, how we flow with these energies is up to us and the choices and actions we take. Some will try to continue business as usual, live in denial, project and blame refusing to be accountable or heal their own victim patterns. They will not fare well in the days to come because the manifestation time between cause and effect is happening much quicker going into the days of instant karma. What took years is happening in days, what took days is happening in hours. Where ever you go there you are and though it might require some space to process the processing and releasing of the past cannot be avoided.

This new year I would strongly suggest finding the quite time to ask yourself, am I creating heaven on earth?

NSAID Drugs May Wreck Havoc on Men Robert Rowen MD "IndyWatch Feed Fertility"

NSAID Drugs May Wreak Havoc on Men Compensated Hypogonadism
Im proud to say that Ive never recommended the NSAID class of drugs. These are drugs like ibuprofen, naproxen, and even aspirin. Whatever they do to reduce pain can be found in molecules made by plants, such as curcumin, luteolin and other bioflavonoids, or even real essential fatty acids (not fish oils).
We now have more evidence of harm from these drugs. They apparently may act as male hormone disruptors, like xenoestrogens in the environment do in both sexes.
Previous research showed that these druge, when taken during pregnancy, can alter testicular function in male babies.
Aspirin, acetaminophen (paracetamol) and ibuprofen disrupt male hormones. A research team studied this effect on human male volunteers and found a quick decoupling between the level of LH (the hormone that stimulates certain testicular cells to make testosterone) and the level of testosterone. For a short time, this is not likely dangerous. But long term, the consequences could be dear. CNN says, This hormonal imbalance produced compensated hypogonadism, a condition associated with impaired fertility, depression and increased risk for cardiovascular events, including heart failure and stroke. LH hormone has to go higher to stimulate an adequate amount of testosterone, compensating for the reduced testicular output.
Folks, these are very popular drugs. And now that researchers are actually looking for subtle effects, the adverse effects are there to be found. Oh, dont expect Pharma to go looking for things like this when it puts out a new petrochemical drug.
In men, sperm counts have plunged over the past 40 years, up to 60%. Some 25% of couples have fertility issues. And while women are looked at first, poor testicular function is a rising tide. Ive written in the past how NSAID drugs like ibuprofen can reduce your joint pain today, only to destroy your cartilage tomorrow. Men, now we see it might also destroy (or simply damage) your testicles.
Our environment is being degraded at an escalating rate. It doesnt make sense to add to your toxic burden with petrochemical pharmaceuticals when God/Nature made natural products in plants that can accomplish the same absent toxicity. Ozone therapy is another terrific alternative as could be (depending on condition) pulsating electromagnetic field therapy, laser therapy, microcurrent, and more.

Dr. Stephen Sinatra: Heart health benefits of coconut oil "IndyWatch Feed Health"

January 11, 2018 | By Dr. Stephen Sinatra

Im often asked if the health benefits of coconut oil are good for your heart, and my answer is a resounding yes. The ordinary coconutknown for its sweet milk, great fiber and ability to conk people on the heads in Marx Brothers moviescan do your heart good, and a lot more.

Many people shun coconut oil because its high in saturated fat, which is true. But coconut oil is also the oil that is least vulnerable to oxidative stress and free radical formationin fact its probably the safest oil to use in all types of cooking.

Coconut Oil and Cholesterol

What about coconut oil and your cholesterol? Coconut oil contains medium-chain fatty acids (MCFA)not the long-chain fatty acids found in most oilsso its heart healthy. In fact, those MCFAs have an effect similar to omega-3 fatty acids, so they make blood platelets less sticky.

Researchers also demonstrated that coconuts MCFAs can neutralize and kill many microorganisms, bacteria and viruses that are responsible for periodontal disease, herpes and even bladder infections. Remember, oral bacteria that can cause dental disease can enter the bloodstream via the gum line, cause inflammation and eventually contribute to arthrosclerosis. Plus, research has shown that the health benefits of coconut oil can help to improve memory.

Incorporating the Health Benefits of Coconut Oil Into Your Diet

  • Use it for cooking. Just remember not to heat it to the point of smoking. Any oil, including coconut oil, can produce toxic byproducts when overheated.
  • Mix it with olive oil in your salad. You might even douse your steamed vegetables with a few teaspoons of it.
  • Eat coconut or other products like coconut milk. Coconut milk can be used to make shakes and smoothies. You can also use it in a hot or cold cereal, or pour it over seasonal organic blueberries, raspberries and strawberries. I like to bake fish in coconut milk to keep it moist and enhance the flavor.
  • Or try coconut water. I add it to my favorite fruit and veggie juice mix.

Details About Flu Vaccine And Its Effectiveness "IndyWatch Feed Health"

By Catherine J. Frompovich

Have you ever wondered why you contract the flu even though youve had your annual flu vaccine?  Ive heard questions about that conundrum, along with other laments, from many folks.

Also, one has to consider there are such things a flu-like symptoms, which often are confused with actual influenza, a contagious respiratory illness caused by a virus, according to the CDC.  However, the CDC and others in the healthcare services industry make educated guesses rather than analyzing cultures to scientifically ascertain if a patient has flu rather than flu-like symptoms, which they can lump under the category as influenza for skewed disease statistics, in my opinion.  Thats why we hear flu can kill 4 thousand to 50 thousand people in the USA during a flu season [4], when they actually die from pneumonia or other health complications.  Some stats claim 12 thousand to 56 thousand people a year! [4] Will the REAL flu statistics please stand up?  Or dont they know and are just guesstimating?

Well, theres overwhelming proof that flu vaccine efficacy (effectiveness) is not up to par with what it had been effective in flu vaccines back in the 1940s, as the chart below indicates, and if not fudged.

Dont Want Your Child To Be A Picky Eater? Eat A Varied Diet, Research Says "IndyWatch Feed Fertility"

Dont Want Your Child To Be A Picky Eater? Eat A Varied Diet, Research Says

Fussy kids with picky eating habits. Most of us experience this at some stage during our parenting life. We all want our kids to get the nutrition they need, but we certainly dont want to deal with the whining and pushback. What if parents could solve the picky eating problem, even before their baby begins solids? Research has shown a mother can reduce her childs fussing over different foods by making certain choices about own diet during her pregnancy, and by breastfeeding her baby.

Dont Want Your Child To Be A Picky Eater? Eat A Varied Diet, Research Says

As someone who consumes food from a variety of cultures, and especially strongly flavoured foods, I can honestly say my children have become very well-rounded eaters. Dont get me wrong. In the preschool years it seems almost every meal comes with quite a bit of fussing, but for the most part my children eat a variety of foods quite willingly. In fact, the other day I was out to lunch and my one-year-old began eating guacamole with jalapeo, and then picked the raw onion off my taco to eat. People are often surprised by my kids palates but with a combination of a varied diet during pregnancy, breastfeeding, and opting to go down the baby-led weaning route for solids, encouraging them to eat a varied diet hasnt been overly troublesome (except during that pesky preschool phase).

How Does A Mothers Diet During Pregnancy Affect A Babys Taste Preferences?

According to new research published in the journal Obesity Review, the flavours a mother consumes reach her baby in the womb. Researchers from the University of Buffalos Department of Pediatrics Behavioral Medicine division looked at research results taken from more than 40 peer-reviewed studies. They wanted to learn more about how toddlers and young children develop taste preferences, and what, if anything, helps prevent or manage picky eating. Researchers found many flavours consumed by expectant mothers were present in their amniotic fluid. The studys authors concluded: Because taste and smell are already functional during fetal life, and because the fetu...
