Elder fruit may increase lipid raft integrity and inhibit release of infectious progeny virion particles from influenza infected cells. "IndyWatch Feed Health"

PMID:  Iran J Pharm Res. 2017 ;16(3):1147-1154. PMID: 29201101 Abstract Title:  Interfering With Lipid Raft Association: A Mechanism to Control Influenza Virus Infection By Sambucus Nigra. Abstract:  Sambucus nigra (elder) are broadly used species to treat microbial infections. The potential antiviral activity and mechanism action of elder fruit (EF) in human epithelium cell (A549) cultures infected with H9N2 influenza virus were determined. The effect of various concentrations of EF on influenza virus replication was examined by using virus titration, quantitative real time RT-PCR, fusion and lipid raft assays following two treatment procedures: A) pre-treated H9N2 virus with each concentration of EF extract and transfection of A549 cell cultures, and B) each concentrations of EF was added to H9N2 virus infected-cell cultures following virus adsorption. In both treatments with lower doses of EF increased viral titer as well as synthesized viral nucleoprotein as indicating the herb had no inhibitory effects on virus replication. In (B) trial with higher doses, 40 and 80g/mL of EF, a significant decrease in virus titer and viral protein synthesis were shown in EF treated cells indicating the herb affect either entry of viruses or inhibition virus particle release. The results suggest that EF treatment of the influenza virus infected-human epithelial cells may involve in lipid raft association which function as platform for formation of viral membrane fusion and budding. Differencesin treatment time and dose of EF extract in infected cells with influenza virus have a marked effect on the efficacy of the herb.

Pop Goes the Ugly American Stereotypes "IndyWatch Feed Arts"

Installation view ofPop Art: Icons That Matter Collection of the Whitney Museum of American Art at Muse Maillol (image courtesy Muse Maillol, copyright S. Lloyd)

PARIS Pop Art: Icons that Matter is a geezer wasteland that reprehensibly reinforces many Ugly American stereotypes that fuel the anti-Americanism being reinvigorated in France. This sentiment is being revived by a loud, arrogant, white, sexist, racist American president who reportedly never reads or works on a computer, but watches hours of television a day, drinks around 12 Diet Cokes and chows down Big Mac cheeseburgers for dinner while endlessly talking on the telephone with friends how Andy of him! This exhibition, culled from the collection of the Whitney Museum, of post-war American Pop Art from the 60s to the 70s, and then later, the 1980s Neo-Pop art of Jeff Koons, Damien Hirst, et al, greased the chute for the price-porn piggies and their abuse of art as a luxury/lifestyle/investment device that has been lately deforming culture as never before.

Here & There "IndyWatch Feed Arts"

Within a week of arriving in Fremantle weve found a sweet little school for Alba and a home within the catchment. Its an old house that Im not sure of at first but it grows on me. The wooden floorboards creak, the taps get stuck and there are cracks in the walls; but it feels like us. Imperfect, cosy, humble.

Alba has her own bedroom with a teepee in the corner that she disappears into when she needs space. We have a fireplace in the living room. We fill our home with colourful rugs and growing plants and glowing lamps.

I turn 25 here. I wake up and Bee has made a treasure hunt through the house with rhyming clues and hidden gifts. Its a quiet birthday but its the best birthday I can imagine because here we are in our new home in one of my favourite places in the world.

Winter fades and spring blooms. There are flowers everywhere and we pick them to fill jars on our dining table and to tuck into our hair. I love doing the washing. The smell of the wet clean clothes and later taking them down still warm from the sun. The laundry has become a darkroom, chemicals sit on the window sill and film is strung up to dry.

I like the sound of the cars driving over wet road when it rains at night and the caw of the crows in the trees. Alba falls asleep in her bed at night and ends up in ours by morning. Her school is small in the nicest way. She settles in like shes always been there. She complains to me that too many people want to be her best friend and gushes that she wants to marry a boy named Angus.

Im not aways happy, anxiety waits like a beast for the smallest crack to crawl through into my head, but mostly I am very happy.

Before I am really ready for it, Bee is leaving to Java for a few weeks to hike volcanoes and climb mountains and take photos. I want to be excited for him. I navely imagine I can wave him goodbye and kiss his forehead and wish him luck. But I cant. I can only disappear into bed with a childish stubbornness.

I harbour this fear of abandonment and when my bruises get pushed I disappear into myself. I build walls out of my hurt, but I am still there behind them. I can still see how unfair an...

Kevin Ledo in Christchurch, New Zealand "IndyWatch Feed Arts"

Kevin Ledo is known for his impressive murals of portraits, and this time its of Whero O Te Rangi Bailey, a Maori elder from Parihaka in Taranki, originally photographed by Stu Robertson

Stu and I met the first day I arrived in Christchurch to discuss me using one of his photos from his Peace in 10000 Hands project. This great project is where Stu photographs a white rose, an ancient symbol of peace, in the hands of 10,000 people from every country on the planet. After some discussion, we agreed that it would be a great idea for me to reinterpret one of his photos into a mural on The Crown Plaza Hotel in Christchurch, a business that agreed to work with Street prints for the festival. Stu has his Photography throughout the Crown Plaza Hotel, therefore having me reinterpret one of his photographs on the building made perfect sense. I initially wanted to work from a photograph of a local Maori person, so after looking through a selection of his photographs of New Zealanders, I came across his photograph of Whero O Te Rangi Bailey, and it struck me as the one.

Soon after starting the mural, the daughter of the woman I was painting, Maia, reached out to me with the kindest words and appreciation. She spoke very highly of her mother and her impact on the community. Whero Bailey is no longer with us, but her daughter said she would have been humbled by this dedication to her. She said the image is being shared around the family and around the rohe (territory of iwi tribes).

A huge special thanks to Jah and Lovie of Street Prints for inviting me to this Festival and making all of this happen, they couldnt have been more generous. Thanks to my buddy Fin Dac whos been my mural and travel partner for the last 5 weeks, from Miami to Tauranga to Christchurch. At last Im back in the deep freeze of Montreal winter.

Surviving a Mad Max World: How To Avoid Marauders and Looters After the Collapse "IndyWatch Feed Food"

[Editors Note: A mad max scenario is one of the worst-case scenarios one can prepare for. The adage if you cant protect you dont own it rings true in this case. Long-term survival plans that reflect this type of disaster suggest preppers getting away from urban and suburban living and heading for hills. While this would be the safest option, there are dangers that lurk for those who plan to live off the land. Because in a post-collapse world they will come for all that you own.]

Seems almost self-explanatory, right?  I mean, what could be so involved with the term living with the land, right?  There is a lot to it.  Theres a reason to do this:

Living with the land will help you to live, and avoid the greatest hunter of all: man. Menmankindhas the same instincts as you, the same success in the generations as you.  Although this is not an anthropological treatise, it holds a lot of anthropology within it, because there are a few key points you must keep in mind: Your weakness is a weakness shared by other men; your strength is a strength possessed by other men; what you can do can be done by other men.

The commonality is both your strength and your weakness.  You become cold, and so does the man (or men) hunting you. The dark poses impediments and unknown dangers, and it does the same to your hunters.

Turn the Hunters Into the Hunted

You can turn the hunters into the huntedfor you are a hunter: it is hard-wired in you through a thousand generations of successful hunters, warriors, and killers. You need to eat, and so do your pursuers.  You need water, and so do they.  You can track, and so can they.  You have senses that can detect man, and so do they.  All of this, yes, you know, Im sure.

But have you considered it all?  Really considered it?

The land: to blend with it, and to live with it without being obtrusive is the key to avoiding the huntersand remember that they have the same limitations as you.  The more pure and clear you keep your senses, the better theyll work for you.  We have done some pieces on the way the eye works, and the sense of smell.  This is the time to do your workyour training to use these senses to their maximum capabilities.  Lets cover some basics as t...

Therapeutic Alliance: Implications for Practice and Policy "IndyWatch Feed Health"

In this piece for Psychiatric Services, Dr. Sandra Steingard comments on the implications of a recent meta-analysis demonstrating the positive effects of the therapeutic alliance on pharmacologic treatment outcomes.

If there are any among us for whom the results of this study might cause surprise, it would be those who have adopted a more mechanistic view of drug efficacy in which a drugs impact is considered to occur independent of social context. The implications of this research should challenge these notions and raise questions about policies derived from them. For it is only when one thinks these drugs work regardless of context that one could promote a production model of care in which as many patients are seen in the shortest time possible. A contrasting approach is Open Dialogue (OD), which places strong emphasis on the therapeutic relationship. In OD, the entire network of those who care about the patient is invited to meetings. Everyones voice is valued and respected. Diagnosis has less immediate primacy and can be understood over time. But these are not 15-minute meetings, and at the outset of treatment these meetings occur frequently. When OD was used with individuals experiencing a first episode of psychosis, researchers reported extremely good outcomes even though only about 30% of patients were ever treated with antipsychotic drugs.

Studies of the therapeutic alliance in pharmacologic treatment are warranted. There is good reason to suspect that we will learn that its effect has less to do with improving adherence to drug treatment than with enhancing other mechanisms of clinical change. It might lead us to reevaluate the wisdom of current practice and policy.

Word Salad is Not Disorganized Thought and Speech "IndyWatch Feed Health"

This piece for Holistic Elephants discusses the role of social context and environment in our perception and construction of word salad, a common symptom of psychosis and extreme states.

So then the class explored instead: what this word salad might have actually been DOING to the psychologist, what did it DO within the social context of this interview and relationship, how did it function? The patient was breaking all of Grices Maxims of polite conversation, wrecking all the polite adjacency pairs, and presenting abstract and obfuscating answers to deflect inquiries, challenges, normal conversation, and relationship building. And the person did this perfectly by talking word salad, which makes sense when you put it in context; that is, when you think about what this language is doing in the situation and not analyse what it means, expresses, communicates, refers to, or represents. In a functional sense, this was not disorganized at all!

Teen Practicing for School Shooting in PUBG Keeps Getting Killed Before Finding Weapon "IndyWatch Feed Satire"

DENVER Dylan Maris, 16, reportedly practiced for a school shooting using the popular violent video game PlayerUnknowns Battlegrounds late last night, despite never being able to find a single piece of loot before being killed by another player.

I was inspired by the Columbine guys who mapped out their shooting in a game of DOOM. I guess in that game you fucking start off with the guns, Maris told angry PUBG squad mates in a game after driving their vehicle off a cliff. I thought this shit would help me get revenge on my classmates but I guess its one more thing Im fucking terrible at.

Im so mad at all the jocks who bully me in class and it turns out theyre even better at finding me in the PUBG school and making me feel like shit there too, he added.

Read More From Hard Drive, The Only Ethical Gaming Journalism Site on The Internet:

After an anonymous tip to the police led to Maris arrest, an advocacy group against violent video games spoke out about the incident.

I guess this should technically be in our wheelhouse but I dont know if it really counts as a violent video game if your noob ass cant even find a gun and you die after your bike bugs and you fly 100ft in the air, said Teresa Withers, a spokesperson for Mothers Against Violent Gaming (MAVG). I mean what is his school shooting gonna look like? He shows up in a crappy vest and then someone beats the shit out of him with a pan?

At press time, Bluehole released a statement about the game condemning Maris and promised to put into place safety measures in PUBG to curb young gamers from using it as a practice for real-life violent attack...

KFC Canada Introduces a Limited-Time Offer Bitcoin Bucket "IndyWatch Feed Crypto"

It is evident the term Bitcoin has become so much more than a designation of the worlds leading cryptocurrency. For many companies, it has also become a marketing gimmick these days. More specifically,  KFC Canada feels now is the best time to introduce a Bitcoin-related product. Their limited-time offer Bitcoin Bucket is an interesting creation in this regard. It can even be delivered to ones doorstep in select regions.

It is important to note KFC Canada currently has no plan to accept Bitcoin payments. Nor will they embrace other cryptocurrencies until further notice. All they aim to do is get a piece of the Bitcoin hype and sell some more products. Theres nothing wrong with using popular trends for ones own marketing purposes. In fact, it may bring some more positive exposure to Bitcoin as a whole. It is an interesting move by KFC Canada, although it remains to be seen if anyone even cares.

Free Bitcoin Marketing Courtesy of KFC Canada

With the Bitcoin Bucket, KFC Canada has created a rather interesting precedent. They are the first major fast-food chain to create a Bitcoin-themed product. Although it cant be paid for in BTC directly, its still an interesting concept. The Bitcoin Bucket is not necessarily something one hasnt seen before either. It contains chicken tenders, waffle fries, Med Side, Med Gravy and 2 Dips. All of this is presented in a convenient bucket for the price of CA$20.

For the time being, it is unclear how long this item will be available. Limited offers like these often disappear pretty quickly. Theres also the question as to whether or not KFC Canada will get a lot of orders for this bucket. Other than a marketing gimmick, there is nothing related to Bitcoin whatsoever. It may have the Bitcoin logo on the front, although that seems highly unlikely at this point. Turning Bitcoin into a marketing gimmick can be a positive move for the cryptocurrency ecosystem overall.

Sadly, the Bitcoin Bucket will not come to the rest of the world. Its unclear why KFC Canada is the one to release such an item, though. Bitcoin hasnt made the biggest of impacts in Canada at this point. Then again, a free marketing trend is a gift horse we shouldnt look in the mouth. In the worst case, very little buzz is created because of it. The best possible scenario would see KFC Canada sp...

Psychosocial Adversities Should be Included in Diagnosis "IndyWatch Feed Health"

Kate Allsopp and Peter Kinderman, from the University of Liverpool, recently published a commentary in The Lancet Psychiatry. In the article, the authors call for psychosocial adversities associated with mental health challenges to be listed alongside ICD-10 or DSM-5 diagnoses.

Imagine if it were as serious to fail to document extreme poverty as it would be for a clinician to fail to identify severe depression, suggest the authors.

The commentary was written in response to a systematic review conducted by Wagner Silva Ribeiro and colleagues finding an association between income inequality and mental illness. Many studies have suggested that adversity and poverty negatively impact mental health and cognition.

The authors write, the United Nations Special Rapporteur characterizes mental health care not as a crisis of individual conditions, but as a crisis of social obstacles, which hinders individual rights. The writers, therefore, conclude that the circumstances that have given rise to distress should be formally recorded alongside the distress itself.

Both the International Classification of Diseases (ICD) and Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM) include descriptors about adversity (e.g., neglect, abandonment). However, these codes are seldom included in formal diagnoses. The authors suggest that the same codes used in a UK government program to reassess disability benefits (e.g., insufficient social support, inadequate housing, extreme poverty) be included in the diagnosis and routine data collection.

Broadening routine data capture within UK National Health Service records could establish more inclusive, social, systemic, and psychologically comprehensive patterns of difficulties, which could target information regarding establi...

The Wearing History Nanette Blouse "IndyWatch Feed Craft"

I was super excited when Wearing History announced the 1930s Nanette Blouse Pattern, because:

1) its adorable, and;

2) Ive been looking for a girlie take on a formal shirt to wear with tails (well, waistcoat and trousers, I usually abandon the tails after 3 minutes), for AGES, and the Nanette Blouse was the perfect design.

I was even more excited when Lauren offered me a review copy.  Yay!  Free vintage pattern goodness!

So I got the pattern for free.  However my opinions on the pattern are totally my own, and not influenced by the free-ness of the pattern.

Wearing History's Nanette Blouse thedreamstress.com

The Fabric:

My sewing goal was for my blouse to be ultra-feminine, but also to clearly reference the idea of a formal shirt. I absolutely love the white blouse shown on the cover of the pattern.  I wanted to replicate its sheer-sleeve and opaque body effect.

A rummage in my fabric stash unearthed a white silk tissue with a slightly crepe thread, and a subtle stripe effect.  It wasnt an absolutely ideal fabric, but it was the best option I had in stash.

Bitcoin Price Watch; Ending The Week On A High "IndyWatch Feed Crypto"

It is Friday morning and its time to take the penultimate of our final two looks at what happened in the bitcoin price across the last 24 hours or so and how we expect things to move near 10 in an attempt to piece together a strategy that we can use to draw a profit from the market if and when things move.

As many reading will likely already be aware, it has been a pretty rough week as far as sentiment (and in turn, price action) is concerned. A range of fundamental developments have translated to some severe weakness in the markets and bitcoin doesnt seem to have any ability to counter this dip in sentiment at least near term.

What this has meant is that things just keep declining without any reprieve or, perhaps more accurately, without any sustainable and supportable reprieve.

Anyway, all we can do is play levels as we see them. So, lets get some support and resistance parameters in place that we can use near-term and see if we can find a positive against the backdrop of substantial negativity.

As ever, take a quick look at the chart below before we get started so as to get an idea of where things stand and where we intend to jump in and out of the markets if and when we see things move.

The chart is a one-minute candlestick chart and it has our primary range overlaid in green.

As the chart shows, the range we are looking at for the session today comes in as defined by support to the downside at 13328 and resistance to the upside at 13535.

If we see price close below support, we will enter short towards an immediate downside target of 13250.

conversely, looking the other way, if price closes above resistance, we will enter long towards 13650.

Scandal of Christmas trees sleeping rough on pavements "IndyWatch Feed Satire"

Thousands of Christmas trees made homeless just a few days into the new year are still sleeping rough on pavements. The shocking fact is that its mostly the middle class who put them there the same people who step over them with hardly a second glance as they go to and from their places of work.

Normally, council workers would have been round to sanitize the neighbourhood thats gov-speak to mean take these discarded and unwanted items off the streets but many local authorities squeezed by Tory cutbacks have instead decided to let the trees rot on the pavements.

We spoke to one tree in a leafy part of the affluent Wandsworth borough. It was a pitiful sight, dressed in just one bauble, needles dropping where it lay. The tree did not reply. Too traumatised, perhaps, to comment on its own frightening and hopeless predicament.

Sadly theres no helpline you can call, but if you come across a sad, homeless tree on the pavement outside a house near where you live, there is something else you can do. Pick the tree up carefully by its top. Drag it up to the front door. Gently open the letter box, and stuff the tree as far into the letter box as it will go. It may sound cruel, but its the right thing to do.

Various Studies Show How Baby Monitors, WiFi and Cell Phones Are Damaging Our Childrens Brains "IndyWatch Feed Uncanny"

Did you know that the brains of children are absorbing far more radiation than those of adults? Sadly, most people dont and because of this, our children will be the ones who pay the price.

Research shows that radiation from things like cell phones and WI-FI have proven to diminish reaction time in children, increase distraction, cause inability to focus, and decrease motor function. You see, because children are still developing they have something known as rapid cellular replication and growth rates that make them more-so vulnerable to DNA damage.

Leading experts from several top universities have actually even gone so far as to convene a program just a few years ago in order to discuss the harsh reality that this entails. The panel warned that this catastrophe is already negatively impacting children across the globe.

This discussion was called Cell Phones and Wi-Fi Are Children, Fetuses, and Fertility at Risk? During this discussion, a very wide range of evidence was presented showing that RF/MW electromagnetic radiation has indisputable biological and health effects. This kind of radiation is emitted by things like Bluetooth devices, cordless phones, baby monitors, WI-FI routers, smart meters, antennas, cell phones, and other wireless devices.

One controlled study from researchers at Yale University positioned a cell phone above a cage of pregnant mice and ensured the phone was transmitting an uninterrupted call for the entire 17 days of gestation. After the babies were born they tested the offspring and found that they showed signs of ADHD and reduced transmission in the prefrontal cortex of the brain.

Camilla Rees of ElectromagneticHealth.org said as follows in regards to this:

Its not talking on the phone that matters, its any time the phone is turned on, Every 900 milliseconds whether you are using the phone or not, your cell phone has a spike in radiation because it is looking for a signal from the tower

Back in 2011, the IARC or International Agency for Research on Cancer concluded that exposure to cell phone radiation is a possible carcinogen and classified it into the 2B category. This is the same category as the pesticide DDT, lead, and dry cleaning chemicals. According to electromagnetichealth.org, there are nine types of cancer linked to cell phone use. These include leukemia, thyroid cancer, breast cancer, and even eye cancer.

Extreme caution was advised for pregnant women or women hoping to conceive due to the profound long-term impact is known historical...

Publication of the Power Threat Meaning Framework "IndyWatch Feed Health"

A major event takes place in London, UK today with the publication of the Power Threat Meaning Framework. The Framework is an ambitious attempt to outline a conceptual alternative to the diagnostic model of mental distress, unusual experiences, and troubled or troubling behaviour. The project has been funded by the Division of Clinical Psychology of the British Psychological Society over a five-year period. The project team (lead authors Mary Boyle and myself, Lucy Johnstone; contributing authors John Cromby, Jacqui Dillon, Dave Harper, Peter Kinderman, Eleanor Longden, David Pilgrim and John Read, with assistance from Kate Allsopp) consists of senior psychologists and prominent survivors, several of whom are bloggers on MIA. They have been supported by a group of over 30 additional professionals and service users as contributors and consultants.

Although the Framework does not represent official DCP or BPS policy, it builds on the Division of Clinical Psychologys 2013 Position Statement Classification of behaviour and experience in relation to functional psychiatric diagnoses which called for a paradigm shift . . . towards a conceptual system which is no longer based on a disease model and recommended work in conjunction with service users, on developing a multi-factorial and contextual approach to replace the current medical one. The Power Threat Meaning Framework synthesizes evidence about the causal roles of power, evolved threat responses, social discourses, and personal meanings and narratives. It is intended to provide the basis for an ongoing series of developments in clinical practice, service design and commissioning, training, research, service user/carer/survivor work, and public education. The project documents will be an evidence-based resource for restoring the link between distress and social injustice, and in doing so, supporting the construction of personal narratives and promoting social action.

The publication of Framework has been eagerly anticipated, and the 400 places for the launch sold out within two days. Other events are planned around the UK and further afield in due course. The launch marks the start of the second stage of the project, which is about translating its principles into practice. While use of the Framework, whether in personal or peer work or within voluntary or statutory services, is entirely optional, the team is encouraged by the interest already expressed.

The project documents will be available after the launch as free downloads from the BPS website. Appendix 1 of the Overview Document consists of a guided discussion for one-to-one work in services or for peer support/self-help. Appendices 2-14 of the Overview Document give examples of existing non-diagnostic practice in various service and non-service settings.

KFC Canada Has Started to Accept Bitcoin For Cryptocurrency-Themed Fried Chicken "IndyWatch Feed Crypto"

Kentucky Fried Chicken (KFC), the beloved US-based fried chicken chain, has started to accept bitcoin from its customers.

KFCs Bitcoin Campaign

For a limited period of time, KFC is selling a bucket of fried chicken for $20 presented in a bitcoin-themed container demonstrating the price of the fried chicken bucket at the time of the sale. For instance, at the time of reporting, $20 is equivalent to $0.0011204, and upon the request of a delivery, KFC embeds the amount of bitcoin equivalent to the price of the bucket of fried chicken onto the container.

While KFC Canada does not intend to integrate bitcoin as a permanent and long-term payment method as of current, the company has introduced its bitcoin campaign to address the rapidly increasing demand for bitcoin and the cryptocurrency market in general.

The strategy of KFC Canada to implement a unique campaign involving one of the fastest evolving technologies and forms of money in bitcoin has been massively successful, as the company obtained significant mainstream exposure from the media and social media platforms such as Facebook and Twitter.

Throughout the limited offering of bitcoin-themed fried chicken buckets, KFC consumers can utilize BitPays payment processing service to purchase the signature KFC fried chicken with bitcoin.

In total, the bitcoin-themed bucket of fried chicken costs just over $27, including the $20 price of the bucket itself, taxes, and shipping fee. Inclusive of bitcoin transaction fees, which are averaging at around $5 on major blockchain wallet platforms like Blockchain and Trezor, the KFC bitcoin-themed fried chicken bucket costs over $30.

Given the current state of the Bitcoin network and its underlying scalability issues, it will be difficult for any large-scale commercial fast food chain to accept bitcoin as a payment method. But, in the future, the integration of second-layer solutions could allow restaurants to en...

Is this bot that just tweeted shithole the best bot thats ever been made? "IndyWatch Feed Satire"

Loving this brilliant idea for a bot it scans the New York Times and posts any words used for the first time.

And today it posted shithole and went viral.

Why?

Donald Trump, in comment many are calling racist asked Why do we want all these people from shithole countries coming here?

Trump is referring to El Salvador, Haiti and Africa.

And the New York Times reported on that, thus putting the word shithole into their reporting for the first time.

So how do YOU create something similar?

The bot is created by developer Max Bittker who has put the code on github. This means you can download it and modify it and we think you should.

So what other use it could be put to?

* First time Trump says a new word in a tweet

* Applying it to UK publications like The Guardian (maybe it would find spelling errors?)

* Er to rude about Piers Morgan?

If you have any great ideas on how to use this code make sure you leave them in the social media comments or, actually, download the code and built them and TELL US.

19-Year-Old Student Uses Early Spy Camera to Take Candid Street Photos (Circa 1895) "IndyWatch Feed Arts"

We are generally accustomed to thinking of 19th century photography as quite static and rigid, and for much of its early history, technical limitations ensured that it was. Portraiture especially presented a challenge to early photographers, since it involved subjects who wanted, or needed, to move, while long exposure times called for maximum stillness. Thus, we have the stiff, unsmiling poses of people trying to make like trees and stay planted in place.

One striking exception, from 1843, shows us a jovial grouping of three men in the first known picture of merry-making at the pub. Though staged, and including one of the duo of photographers responsible for the portrait, the image has all the vitality of an off-the-cuff snapshot. We might be surprised to learn that it would only be a few decades later, before the turn of the century, when truly candid shots of people in action could be made with relative ease.

Not only were many of these photos candid, but many...

Bethia McNeil muses on the dilemmas of naming and measuring youth work "IndyWatch Feed Education"

cyi-new-logo

Our relationship with the Centre for Youth Impact [CYI] remains inevitably fragile. We are deeply cautious about the consequences of its perspective for a process-led, person-centred youth work practice. However, we have sought to be in critical dialogue with CYI and this desire has been reciprocated. Hence its important to engage with Bethia McNeils New Years musings on what she sees as key issues in the ongoing debate about the relationship between something we call youth work and the heterogeneous layer of humanity we call young people.

Thoughts From The Centre to be found in the very useful CYI Newsletter
This month, Bethia has been mostly thinking about

  • What is the most meaningful language in which to talk about provision for young people? Does it make sense to talk about different fields of practice? Or approaches? Or even practices? And what about ethics, values and principles? To what extent is shared learning held back by a lack of common language and/or understanding?
  • What is the relationship between organisational or practice improvement and improvement in outcomes for young people? Are there common areas of improvement, or is it more nuanced? How much is about systems and processes, and how much about relationships?
  • How can we value the act of measurement as much as the data that we are gathering? It feels like there are fractures on both sides of this issue at the moment: there is widespread antipathy towards the act of measurement and its impac...

Critical Thinking: In 2018, What Should the New Years Resolutions for the Journalism Industry Include? "IndyWatch Feed Literature"

Critical Thinking-January-2018

Glenn Rohrbacker, 22, senior, University of New Haven (West Haven, Conn.)

Rohrbacker is the editor-in-chief of the student-run newspaper, Charger Bulletin. He has been a staff member since 2014 and editor since July 2016.

After President Trump returned from his trip from Asia, he held a press conference to lay out his vision for what he accomplished. Many news outlets reported on his ideas and how he followed through with his America First agenda, but the New York Times also published a story titled My Fellow AmericansIm thirsty.

I initially thought this was satire, maybe Andy Borowitz was guest-writing. But upon reading the article and discovering it was a serious piece about President Trump needing a drink of water, I wondered: why?

The Hill is also a big proponent of publishing non-stories and creating a story any time the President tweets. One example is of their story on Trumps tweet commenting on China sending a delegation to North Korea in November. The story had nine shares at that time.

At a time when newsrooms, including the New York Times, are cutting down staff due to a purported lack of resources, a piece like this is being published with no value whatsoever. We have gotten so caught up in th...

Bitcoin Gold Price Technical Analysis BTG/USD Struggling Below $230 "IndyWatch Feed Crypto"

Key Points

  • Bitcoin gold price declined recently and it traded as low as $199.83 against the US Dollar.
  • There is a major bearish trend line forming with resistance at $228 on the hourly chart of BTG/USD (data feed from Bitfinex).
  • The pair is now in the bearish zone below $230 and the 100 hourly simple moving average.

Bitcoin gold price declined towards $200 against the US Dollar. BTG/USD is currently showing a lot of negative signs and is below the $230 resistance.

Bitcoin Gold Price Upside Hurdle

There were continuing declines in bitcoin gold price below the $240 support against the US Dollar. The price extended its recent decline and moved below the $220 and $210 support levels. It even attempted a break below the $200 level and formed a low at $199.83. Later, it managed to recover slightly and it moved back above the $200 level. It also succeeded in breaking the 23.6% Fib retracement level of the last drop from the $246 high to $199 low.

However, there are many hurdles on the upside such as the $220 level. It is the 50% Fib retracement level of the last drop from the $246 high to $199 low. Above the $220-222 level, the next major resistance is around the $230 level and the 100 hourly simple moving average. There is also a major bearish trend line forming with resistance at $228 on the hourly chart of BTG/USD. Therefore, it seems like there is a key resistance area forming near $220-230 levels.

Bitcoin Gold Price Technical Analysis BTG USD

If the pair corrects higher from the current levels, it may face sellers near $220-230. On the downside, a break and close below $200 could escalate bearish pressure in the short term.

Looking at the technical indicators:

Hourly MACD The MACD for BTG/USD is slightly placed in the bullish zone.

Hourly RSI (Relative Strength Index) The RSI for BTG/USD is still below the 50 level.

Major Support Level $200

Major Resistance Level $230

For those who do not know that specific full moon is going to be a blue moon, a blood moon, and a supermoon. No, I am not joking, this is something that has not happened in over 100 years.

Breaking Down the Trifecta:

Blue Moon

A blue moon is probably the easiest of these three to explain. It is simply what we call the second full moon of any given month. For instance, if there were more than one full moon in say, October the second full moon would be referred to as a blue moon. No, a blue moon is not actually blue for anyone who may be wondering.

Blood Moon

A blood moon is a term used to refer to a total lunar eclipse. This is because the fully eclipsed moon will, for the most part, appear reddish in color. While a lunar eclipse is not as intense as a solar eclipse it is much easier on the eyes. It happens when the Moon travels through the Earths umbra. That being said, the moon does not ever technically turn completely black during the ordeal.

Supermoon

A supermoon is something that happens when the full moon coincides with the moons closest approach to Earth in its orbit. Supermoons make the moon itself appear bigger and brighter even though it has not technically changed at all. The term supermoon is relatively new as it has only been used in the past 40 years.

You see, the super blue blood moon to come is going to be something quite interesting, to say the least. The energies this full moon will bring are going to be like nothing we have experienced before. I suggest taking the time to ensure your personal energies are protected and then sitting back to see the magic of this event. For more information on all of this please feel free to check out the video below. I am quite excited for this!

For the First Time Ever NASA Has Seen Something Come Out of A Black Hole "IndyWatch Feed Uncanny"

Black holes are some of the most confusing phenomena out there in space. Scientists and researchers have yet to understand them and NASA just saw something come out of one for the first time ever!

We dont know much about black holes except for their dark and expansiveness that can consume anything that crosses its path, even time itself. According to NASA, a black hole is a place in space where gravity pulls so much that even light cannot escape its grasp. The immense gravity is so strong because the matter has been squeezed into a tiny space. They likely form when a star dies and implodes into likely multiple dimensions. They can be both big and small, but none of them are more visible. Space telescopes with special tools and technology can help identify a black hole, but the naked eye can never see them. However, NASA just saw something humans have never seen before something coming out of a black hole.

You dont have to know a whole lot about science to know that black holes typically suck things in, not spew things out. But NASA just spotted something mighty strange at the supermassive black hole Markarian 335.

So, what exactly happened? Thats what we are trying to figure out now, according to Fiona Harrison

This is the first time we have been able to link the launching of the corona to a flare, this will help us understand how supermassive black holes power some of the brightest objects in the universe

To continue the statement:

NuSTARs principal investigator, Fiona Harrison, noted that the nature of the energetic source is mysterious, but added that the ability to actually record the event should provide some clues about the black holes size and structure, along with (hopefully) some fresh intel on how black holes function. Luckily for us, this black hole is still 324 million light-years away. S...

Why So Many Women Cant Orgasm, According to Science "IndyWatch Feed Uncanny"

Experts report that approximately 75% of women are unable to achieve orgasm through intercourse alone. Even more discouraging, 10-15% of women have never reached a climax, regardless of the sexual act. These startling, and somewhat disheartening, facts raise an important question what is keeping women from achieving the big O?

There are two key factors to consider when looking into the elusive female orgasm the physical and the mental factors that influence a womans ability to experience pleasure during sex.  Understanding both of these factors, how they can work both for and against us, and learning what steps to take to overcome any possible roadblocks will lead to better sex. Honestly, who doesnt want to have better sex???

Source: Eligible Magazine

Physical Factors

This shouldnt come as news by any means, but all women are unique. Different heights, hair colors, body shapes, and more. This doesnt just end with the parts of a womans body that you can see out in public our vaginas are also unique. Contrary to popular belief, there is no such thing as a normal vagina. Did that just turn everything that you thought you knew about the female body upside down? There are many of you who are currently scratching your heads and trying to figure this one out

Im not saying that there arent similarities or certain factors that carry through from woman to woman. For example, if you are experiencing a yeast infection you are likely going to notice very similar symptoms. However, there are a number of differences to keep in mind.

Every woman has a different size, shape, and color. Another VERY significant change when discussing the topic of sex every clitoris is a different size and has its own unique placement. This means, guys, the clit may not be where you think! Take some to get to know your ladys body if you want to ensure that you are giving her the appropriate amount of clitoral...

Ripple Price Technical Analysis XRP/USD Bearish Pressure Escalates "IndyWatch Feed Crypto"

Key Highlights

  • Ripple price remained in a bearish trend and it traded below the $1.60 support against the US Dollar.
  • This weeks highlighted major bearish trend line with current resistance at $1.85 is preventing upsides on the hourly chart of the XRP/USD pair (data source from Kraken).
  • The price remains at a risk of more losses as long as it is below the $1.80 level.

Ripple price declined further against the US Dollar and Bitcoin. XRP/USD tested the $1.50 level and it is currently placed in the bearish zone for more declines.

Ripple Price Decline

There was no respite for Ripple price as it extended declines below the $1.75 level against the US Dollar. The price moved down and broke the $1.60 support level as well to trade towards $1.50. A low was formed at $1.5002 and it seems like the current bearish pressure is here to stay. A tiny recovery is underway from $1.50. XRP is currently testing the 23.6% Fib retracement level of the last drop from the $2.05 high to $1.50 low.

There are many resistances on the upside near the $1.75 and $1.80 level. An initial resistance is around the 50% Fib retracement level of the last drop from the $2.05 high to $1.50 low. Moreover, this weeks highlighted major bearish trend line with current resistance at $1.85 is preventing upsides on the hourly chart of the XRP/USD pair. Therefore, there is a clear major resistance forming near $1.80. A break above the $1.80-1.85 levels is needed for buyers to take back the lost control.

Ripple Price Technical Analysis XRP USD

On the downside, the recent low of $1.50 is a decent support. XRP must hold $1.50 to avoid further declines toward $1.25 in the near term.

Looking at the technical indicators:

Hourly MACD The MACD for XRP/USD is currently in the bearish zone.

Hourly RSI (Relative Strength Index) The RSI for XRP/USD is recovering from the 30 level.

Major Resistance Level $1.85...

TIME TO BUY LUMENS "IndyWatch Feed Crypto"

Thinking of break out trades? If so, its time to buy Lumens. Why? First, prices are reversing from key Fibonacci retracement levels and secondly, at the moment Lumens coin is hot property. As such, riding with positive vibes-or anti-FUD news is always a good move.

Alternatively, if you are thinking of Monero buys, you should wait for a retest of 0.025 BTC for sweet entries-and by that I mean low risk and potential of high rewards entries.

Otherwise, the boring accumulation in other high cap alt coins on focus is not helping spread my bullish gospel!

Grow Your Own Food "IndyWatch Feed Health"

30 Tips in 30 Days Designed to Help You Take Control of Your Health

This article is part of the 30 Day Resolution Guide series. Each day a new tip will be added designed to help you take control of your health. For a complete list of the tips click HERE

By Dr. Mercola

Growing your own food is a convenient and cost-effective means of boosting your nutrition and health. Garden-grown organic vegetables and fruits are nutrient-rich and represent the freshest produce available. Growing your own crops not only improves your diet, but it also:

  • Enhances and protects precious topsoil
  • Encourages composting, which can be used to feed and nourish your plants
  • Minimizes your exposure to synthetic fertilizers, pesticides and other toxins
  • Promotes biodiversity by creating a natural habitat for animals, birds, insects and other living organisms
  • Improves your fitness level, mood and sense of well-being, making gardening a form of exercise

While gardens have many benefits, the most important reason you should plant a garden (especially given the many issues associated with industrial agriculture) is because gardening helps create a more sustainable global food system, giving you and others access to fresh, healthy, nutrient-dense food.

Sprouts Are a Nutrient-Dense Food Easily Grown in Small Spaces

If you are new to gardening and unsure about where to start, consider sprouts. Sprouts are an easy-to-grow, but often overlooked, superfood with a superior nutritional profile. You can grow sprouts even if you dont have an outdoor garden, and you should consider them if you live in an apartment or condo where space is limited. (For more tips on growing food in small spaces, Alex Mitchell's book, The Edible Balcony: Growing Fresh Food in Small Spaces, is an excellent resource.)

A powerhouse of nutrition, sprouts may contain up to 30 times the nutrition of organic vegetables grown in your garden, and they enable your body to extract more vitamins, minerals, amino acids and essential fats from the foods you eat. During sprouting, minerals such as calcium and magnesium bind to protein, making them more bioavailable. Furthermore, the quality of the fiber and protein content of most beans, grains, nuts and seeds improves when sprouted.

How to Grow Milk Thistle "IndyWatch Feed Health"

By Dr. Mercola

Most people actually consider milk thistle a pesky weed, and while it can be quite invasive, it also possesses remarkable medicinal benefits that make it worth keeping around. Most notably, this tall, thorny herb with spiky flowers has been prized for centuries for its anti-inflammatory, antioxidant and antiviral properties. It is also highly regarded as a liver tonic due to high amounts of a chemical compound known as silymarin.

Silymarin is a group of flavonoids (silibinin, silidianin and silicristin) known to help repair your liver cells when theyve been damaged by toxic substances. These flavonoids also protect new liver cells from being destroyed by toxins. As such, milk thistle greatly improves the overall functioning of your liver, with specific applications related to cirrhosis of the liver, chronic liver inflammation and liver damage from alcohol and other intoxicating substances.

While all parts of the milk thistle plant are edible, silymarin is contained in the seeds only. Because a single plant produces thousands of seeds that spread very easily, youd be wise to check with your local cooperative extension office to find out if milk thistle is considered an invasive species in your area. If it is, you may be banned from growing it.

The History of Milk Thistle

Milk thistle (Silybum marianum) also known as Mary thistle and holy thistle is a common flowering herb1,2 within the Asteraceae family. Some of its close relatives include aster, daisy, dandelion, sunflower and ragweed. It is highly regarded for its anti-inflammatory, antioxidant and antiviral properties and has been used in traditional Chinese, European and Ayurvedic medicine for more than 2,000 years. It originated in Southern Europe, Asia Minor and the Mediterranean region, but now grows wild around the world.

Under almost any conditions, milk thistle grows 3 to 4 feet tall, featuring glossy, milky-white veined leaves and bright magenta or purple flowers beset with prickly spines. Its name results from the milky white sap its leaves release when theyre crushed. Since its healing properties were first described in 40 A.D. by Greek physician and botanist Dios...

Immigration hype and immigration reality - enforced by the bulldozer "IndyWatch Feed Fertility"

St Kilda Road and Hoddle Street widening to accommodate larger volumes of road traffic in Melbourne means bulldozing hundreds of beautiful, mature trees, cultivated in a time when people appreciated the importance of natural shade and beauty. This vandalism is caused by willful promotion of overpopulation by the Victorian State government. Furtively supported by an equally venal Opposition, invited economic mass immigration-caused population growth marches on like an invasion preceded by bulldozers, jack hammers and all manner of violence towards our environment and display of might by state governments. Australia grew by over half a million people between July 2016 and July 2017, although natural increase actually declined, almost certainly due to rising costs affecting Australia's fertility opportunity.[1]

Swamped by the numbers

Excuse me, but it seems that Pauline Hanson was right, at least on the numbers: We are being 'swamped' - at a rate of Overseas immigrants 63.0 : Australian citizens and residents 36.8 - by the numbers - wherever they come from. These latest growth figures were due 63% to overseas immigration; only 36.8% from natural increase between July 2016 and July 2017. (See the latest ABS graph and details below.) It doesn't matter where they come from; the point is that accommodating these numbers is overwhelming our native animal habitat, our infrastructure, our social organisation, our legal and planning system (which is changing to remove public...

New Symmetry Cryptocurrency Fund Aims to Minimize Confusion Associated With Crypto Investment "IndyWatch Feed Crypto"

Symmetry Fund boasts a less risky and less confusing structure for a cryptocurrency fund, promising large returns on initial investments.

Taking the Confusion Out of Crypto

As cryptocurrency receives more coverage in mainstream media, more people desperately want to invest in the skyrocketing currencies but are simply too confused to know where to begin. Symmetry Fund hopes to solve this problem.

Symmetry Fund offers a structure very similar to a mutual fund for investors to begin investing in cryptocurrency. A driving factor behind this is that is cuts down on the complexity of investing in crypto which allows investors to focus less energy on managing their resources. The project also aims to create a stable, transparent fund as cryptocurrency is becoming more intertwined with governments and establishments, a possible sign of future regulatory policies.

SYMM plans to generate most of its revenue through various cryptocurrency trades, much like a mutual fund will invest in stocks or bonds. The firm also plans to invest in promising ICOs early, similar to Ethereum or Litecoin, which promises large returns if done responsibly.

SYMM is not the first investment fund to deal with cryptocurrency, but the firm is making key changes that will ensure investors make profitable returns.

One problem the firm intends to assuage is the manner in which funds charge investors. Current mutual funds will take a set percentage of portfolio annually, a system that benefits fund managers more than investors. However, SYMM will charge their clients based on the performance of the fund, meaning SYMM only receives payment when investors do well.

Additionally, the company has a reserve system in place to prevent any large-scale losses. SYMM will retain 10% of their portfolio in fiat currencies in order to mitigate risks associated with the large price fluctuations of cryptocurrency. Although the 10% will be exposed to the large spikes in the cryptocurrency market, this means it will not be exposed to the dips either.

Lastly, SYMM has authorized the use of a third-party auditor to emphasize transparency and credibility for investors.

Symmetry Fund ICO and SYMM Tokens

Symmetry Funds ICO is scheduled in two rounds. The first round began on December 10th, 2017 and will continue until February 10th, 2018. The second round begins on February 10, 2018 and runs through April 10, 2018.

Ethereum Price Technical Analysis ETH/USD Testing Key Support "IndyWatch Feed Crypto"

Key Highlights

  • ETH price moved down recently and it broke the $1200 support against the US Dollar.
  • There are bearish trend lines forming with resistance at $1170 and $1225 on the hourly chart of ETH/USD (data feed via SimpleFX).
  • The pair remains under a bearish pressure below $1200 and the 100 hourly simple moving average.

Ethereum price moved down against the US Dollar and Bitcoin. ETH/USD is currently holding the $1070 support, but it is below the 100 hourly SMA.

Ethereum Price Support

Yesterday, ETH price failed to move above the $1300 level against the US Dollar and moved down. The price traded lower and broke the $1200 support area and the 100 hourly simple moving average. The decline was steady and the price even cleared the $1100 support. It traded as low as $1079 from where an upside recovery was initiated towards $1200. It has moved above the 23.6% Fib retracement level of the last drop from the $1379 high to $1079 low.

However, there are many resistances on the upside around $1200 and the 100 hourly SMA. There are also bearish trend lines forming with resistance at $1170 and $1225 on the hourly chart of ETH/USD. The pair is currently attempting to break the first trend line at $1170. Above $1170, the 38.2% Fib retracement level of the last drop from the $1379 high to $1079 low is around $1193. The most important resistance is around the $1200 level and the 100 hourly SMA.

Ethereum Price Technical Analysis ETH USD

A proper close above the $1200 level and two bearish trend lines is needed for ETH to move back in the bullish zone. On the downside, the pair has to hold the $1070 low in order to avoid any further losses toward $1020 in the near term.

Hourly MACD The MACD is now moving in the bearish zone.

Hourly RSI The RSI is stable, bit it is well below the 50 level.

Major Resistance Level $1200

Scientists Claim They Discovered Worlds Earliest Representation of a Supernova "IndyWatch Feed Arts"

Photograph and sketch of stone carving from Burzahom (all images courtesy IGNCA)

Five-thousand-year-old stone carvings found in the Kashmir Valley may represent the earliest known recording of a supernova, according to a group of Indian scientists. Their study, published in the Indian Journal of History of Science, reinterprets a curious scene: since archaeologists unearthed the irregular stone slab in 1969, experts have believed that its markings depict a hunting scene, with armed men chasing fauna beneath two radiating, sun-like objects.

Our first argument was, there cannot be two suns, astrophysicist Mayank Vahia told the Guardian. We thought it must have been an object that appeared and attracted the attention of the artists.

Vahia and his team also ruled out the possibility that the carvers were depicting the sun together with the moon, since the full moon does not appear that close to the sun. The scientists then theorized that the object could be a supernova the super explosion of a star that creates an extremely brilliant flash as it unfolds.

Astronomers have been able to determine the locations and timings of past supernovas by studying the x-rays they radiate for centuries after they explode. Vahia and his team searched records of past supernovas, for those that would have exploded during the right period and were bright enough to see from the stones original site. They found one strong candidate: Supernova HB9, a star that exploded around 4,600 BCE.

Upon further research, the team also realized that the stone which measures about 18 by 10 inches could potentially depict a map of the sky observed one night, rather than a simple hunting scene. The scientists transposed the carvings onto a chart of known constellations that surrounded HB9, and realized that the figures could represent celestial clusters. Seen from Kashmir, the supernova would have exploded near Orion, which...

Bitcoin Price Technical Analysis for 01/12/2018 New Triangle Forming "IndyWatch Feed Crypto"

Bitcoin Price Key Highlights

  • Bitcoin price has formed lower highs and found support at $13,000, creating a descending triangle pattern.
  • Price is currently testing the bottom of the formation and might be due for  bounce back to support.
  • Technical indicators appear to be signaling that the consolidation could carry on.

Bitcoin price is trading inside a descending triangle pattern and is currently testing support.

Technical Indicators Signals

The 100 SMA is below the longer-term 200 SMA on this time frame, so the path of least resistance is to the downside. This suggests that the triangle support is more likely to break than to hold, possibly sending bitcoin price down by $6,000 or the same height as the triangle formation.

These moving averages are also close to the triangle resistance, adding an extra ceiling in the event of a move higher. Stochastic is pointing down to show that sellers have the upper hand but RSI looks ready to turn higher and indicate a return in bullish momentum.

Market Factors

The US dollar was actually on weak footing as PPI numbers turned out weaker than expected and traders set their expectations lower for todays CPI release. Note that downbeat inflation expectations are likely to weigh on Fed tightening odds.

Meanwhile, bitcoin price continues to reel from the lack of market interest as investors appear to be flocking to altcoins instead. South Korea also announced plans to ban bitcoin trading in the country, likely putting a huge dent on overall market activity.

In China, the government also ordered several mining facilities to close, causing costs to mine to surge.

Some of our long-term hosting partners are facing a crisis of farm closure as mining resources in mainland China become more scarce, leading to rocketing costs of our cloud mining operation, a statement from ViaBTC Technology Ltd., which runs the fourth-biggest bitcoin mining collective, said. Bitcoin Cash Price Technical Analysis BCH/USD Trims Recent Gains "IndyWatch Feed Crypto"

Key Points

  • Bitcoin cash price after trading as high as $2948 started a new downside wave against the US Dollar.
  • There was a break below a short-term bullish trend line with support at $2560 on the hourly chart of BCH/USD (data feed from Kraken).
  • The pair is now back in the bearish zone below $2600 and the 100 hourly simple moving average.

Bitcoin cash price reversed all its gains from the $2950 high against the US Dollar. BCH/USD is now below $2600 and is showing a few bearish signs.

Bitcoin Cash Price Resistance

It was a bullish run yesterday from the $2550 swing low in bitcoin cash price against the US Dollar. The price traded above the $2800 level and formed a high at $2948. Later, it faced a lot of selling pressure and the price tumbled below the $2700 and $2600 support levels. During the downside move, the price also cleared the $2580 support and settled below the 100 hourly simple moving average.

Moreover, there was a break below a short-term bullish trend line with support at $2560 on the hourly chart of BCH/USD. It seems like the pair has trimmed most of its gains and is currently in the bearish zone below $2500. The recent low formed was at $2353 from where the price attempted a recovery. It moved above the 23.6% Fib retracement level of the last drop from the $2948 high to $2353 low. However, the upside move was capped by the $2550 resistance and the 100 hourly SMA.

Furthermore, there was no break of the 38.2% Fib retracement level of the last drop from the $2948 high to $2353 low. Clearly, BCH is struggling below the $2500 level and it remains at risk of more declines.

Looking at the technical indicators:

Pentagon Unveil Troll Army To Spread American Propaganda Online "IndyWatch Feed Uncanny"

The Pentagon have deployed hundreds of soldiers to work within the US Armys new troll division a unit tasked with spreading pro-American propaganda online.

According to white papers published on the Federal Business Opportunities website on Wednesday, the US Military wants a new intelligence tool so that soldiers working within the troll division can better understand social media posts in languages such as Russian, French and Arabic.

Rt.com reports: The self-improving AI tool is meant to work with text, voice, images and other content on social media in Arabic, French, Pashtu, Farsi, Urdu, Russian and Korean. It should understand colloquial phrasing, spelling variations, social media brevity codes and emojis, and also recognize various dialects.

The content will be automatically analyzed for sentiment at minimum distinguish positive, neutral and negative emotions and preferably tell anger, pleasure, sadness and excitement. It should also have the capability to suggest whether specific audiences could be influenced based on derived sentiment.

Additionally, the tool must be able to serve as a translator to English and back into the original language, and automatically generate at least three, and up to 10, unique statements derived from one original social media statement, while retaining the meaning and tone of the original.

The responses should be customized according to whatever slang and emojis the original contained. The software is also required to monitor and analyze the impact of the message on the target audience.

The US militarys involvement in social media communication in other nations is hardly surprising. The Pentagon was among the pioneers of state astroturfing campaigns online propaganda and social media manipulation through sock...

The Dark Side of LED Lighting "IndyWatch Feed Health"

NOVEMBER 15, 2017 AT 6:56 PM

LED lights are making us blind and wreaking havoc on our endocrine systems, peer-reviewed studies show Leading photobiologist recommends switching back to sunlight, candles and incandescent bulbs

One of the worlds top photobiologists has been trying to warn the public for years about the dangers of the government-mandated phasing out of incandescent lighting.

While LEDs (light-emitting diodes) are up to 95 percent more energy efficient than incandescent bulbs, we are paying for that savings with our health.
A physician and lecturer at Wismar University in Germany, Alexander Wunsch is an international consultant to governments, medical facilities and the lighting industry.
His message, though often ignored, is clear: blue light, isolated from all the other colors on the light spectrum, is damaging our retinas and disrupting our endocrine systems, resulting in all sorts of physical and mental illness.
Its not a message the LED industry, governments looking to cut carbon emissions, or consumers saving money on electricity want to hear. But, as this Harvard Medical School report says,...

Famous Fat Celebrities -- Sharon Jones: "Too Fat, Too Black" "IndyWatch Feed Fertility"

I just came across the biographic details of an amazing entertainer with whom I was unfamiliar. Her name was Sharon Jones. She was a soul and funk singer so full of energy and fierceness on stage that she was sometimes called "the female James Brown."

She led a fascinating and inspiring life, full of hardships overcome through sheer guts and hard work. Against all odds, she achieved fame and renown in middle age. And when she was handed a difficult diagnosis of terminal cancer at far too young an age, she persevered with her life's work and continued breaking barriers for women and people of color for as long as she could. She died a peaceful death, full of music and grace, surrounded by her family and her band. Hers was a life well-lived.

Childhood

Sharon Lafaye Jones was born May 4, 1956 in Augusta Georgia. She was born to Ella Mae Price Jones and Charlie Jones. She was the youngest of six children. After Ella Mae's sister died, she raised her sister's four children as well, so Sharon grew up as one of ten children.

Sharon's father was abusive and home life was chaotic at times. According to one source, she had a brother who went crazy after a brush with LSD, and her mother shot at her husband when he was unfaithful during her pregnancy.

In time, her mother...

Cold Weather Conquers Africa, As A Rare Snow Blanket Covers The Sahara Desert "IndyWatch Feed Spiritual"

by Ivan; Ancient Code

Here a sight you dont see every day, check out a SNOWASIS. Snow is falling in the arid desert of the Sahara for the THIRD time in 40 years.

The polar wave that has affected a large part of the US in recent days and Spain has made its way to North Africa, where the Sahara Desert changed its usual reddish and brown tone, giving way to a massive, white snow cover that took many people by surprise.

The amazing scenery was recorded in the town of An Sfra, known as the desert gate, in northwestern Algeria. In this district, located at 1,080 meters above sea level, and surrounded by the Atlas Mountains, the snow reached a thickness of around 40 centimeters, newspaper Express reported.

Research Shows That Fake Medications Are Killing Hundreds of Thousands Globally "IndyWatch Feed Spiritual"

by Robert Oliva; Collective Evolution

Most of us are accustomed to picking up our prescription medication from the pharmacy without a second thought to its safety or reliability. But imagine if your child was ill and the medication you picked up was fake and caused your child to not only not recover but possibly die. Thats the terrifying situation faced by millions of parents around the world.

The spread of fake medicines is at pandemic proportions. Its estimated that over one million people die each year from fake drugs, according to Interpol, the world police agency. Peter Pitts, president of The Center for Medicine in the Public Interest puts the number of deaths in China alone at 300,000 annually.

Last year, European officials seized over 34 million fake meds in two months while Irish drug enforcement confiscated 1.7 million pounds of counterfeit and illegal drugs.

In April of 2015, the National Institutes of Health (NIH) reported that scientists inspected medications from around the world and found very disturbing news:

Scientists inspected the quality of about 16,800 samples of anti-malarials, anti-tuberculosis medicines, antibiotics and anti-leishmaniasis drugs and reported from 9 to 41 percent failed to meet the specifications. Seven separate studies were carried out, primarily in low-resource settings, and included samples from public and private sources.

Second WikiLeaks-Inspired SecureDrop Developer Commits Suicide Just Like His Predecessor

The second developer to take over the WikiLeaks inspired SecureDrop project has killed himself just like the first one did.

A second member of a three-man team who created a secure system for whistleblowers to submit information to news outlets has committed suicide at the age of 36, reports the Freedom of the Press Foundation. Software engineer James Dolan took his own life nearly five years to the day after the death of SecureDrop co-creator and Reddit co-founder Aaron Swartz.

Dolan, a former Marine, helped create the system in 2012 along with Swartz and Wired editor Kevin Poulsen  who spearheaded the project first known as StrongBox and later DeadDrop. The trios secure submission system has been used by The New Yorker, the Washington Post, The New York Times, the Associated Press and Gizmodo allowing highly secure communication between journalists and sources in possession of sensitive information or documents, per Gizmodo.

Co-creator Kevin Poulsen described Dolans role in the projects creation in the New Yorker in 2013:

Lesser Known Altcoins to Look into: Kodakcoin and Zcash "IndyWatch Feed Crypto"

While all eyes are on major cryptocurrencies and those on the top 10 largest market cap list, lets take a moment to introduce some lesser known altcoins and new ICOs. Todays well be looking at Zcash and KodakCoin.

Zcash (ZEC) Overview

Zcash is a decentralized and open-source cryptocurrency. Zcash coin code is ZEC. Standing at the 23rd position in terms of cryptocurrency market cap, Zcash aims to differentiate itself from others by focusing a great deal on privacy.

According to their website, Zcash is based on peer-reviewed cryptographic research and built by a security-specialized engineering team on an open source platform based on Bitcoin Cores battle-tested codebase.

Whats Unique About Zcash?

Zcash enables users to send public payments which work similarly to Bitcoin. With the support for both shielded and transparent addresses, users can choose to send Zcash privately or publicly. Zcash payments sent from a shielded address to a transparent address reveal the received balance, while payments from a transparent address to a shielded address protect the receiving value.

While this feature could be appealing to criminals, Zcash believes companies need the protection of privacy along with their supply chain in order to conduct their business, especially in the context of public blockchains. In addition, they believe that personal privacy is necessary for core human values like dignity, intimacy, and morality.

ZEC Price Action

Unlike many of its crypto peers, Zcash ZEC actually started its journey high, at $30,000 in October 2016. It then dropped sharply to as low as $30 within two months. In mid-2017 it started to gain momentum, now fluctuating between $800 and $500.

Monsanto Trying To Hide GMO Foods Under the Term Biofortified "IndyWatch Feed Health"

GMO foods biofortified

By Heather CallaghanEditor

Do genetically engineered crops and their pesticides make you think of the term biofortified? Chances are, the term biofortified makes you think of vitamins in kids cereals.

Mega corporations are no strangers to propaganda and public relations. Did you know that much of our non-organic crops are grown with human sewage sludge? No? Thats because the practice is called biosolids to keep you in the dark. You are probably aware of the sneaky disguises that sweeteners like aspartame and high fructose corn syrup were attempted to be concealed in. (Corn sugar, anyone?)

There are no power grabs out of reach for Monsanto they are now attempting the most ridiculous propaganda scheme of all. They are attempting to manipulate definitions under Codex Alimentarius that would allow GMOs to fall under the classification of biofortified foods.

Vitamin D Supplements May Make Arteries Healthier "IndyWatch Feed Food"

Vitamin D may help make arteries healthier.

According to preliminary research from the Medical College of Georgia at Augusta University, high doses of vitamin D seem to keep arteries more flexible and pliable, potentially warding off future heart disease, heart attacks and strokes.

A small-scale clinical trial of a group of 70 young black men and women were tested to see how vitamin D helps with flexibility in arteries. Results showed that arterial stiffness was reduced in just four months while taking vitamin D supplements.

The vitamin D receptor is expressed everywhere in your body, in almost every single type of cell, said Dr. Yanbin Dong, senior researcher and professor at the Medical College of Georgia at Augusta University. Thats why people think vitamin D might have something more to offer.

Dong and his colleagues recruited a group of overweight or obese black Americans who were deficient in vitamin D. While human skin naturally synthesizes vitamin D when exposed to bright sunshine, darker skin absorbs less sunlight, making black people more susceptible to vitamin deficiency, the researchers said, as reported in U.S. News.

In addition, body fat tends to capture and hold vitamin D, also contributing to deficiency.

The study participants were placed into four groups. Three groups took oral doses of vitamin D amounting to 600 international units (IU), 2,000 IU or 4,000 IU daily. The fourth group took placebos.

The National Academy of Medicine currently recommends that people get 600 IU of vitamin D daily, Dong said. The researchers chose 2,000 IU because they suspected that might be the best dose, and 4,000 IU because thats the highest level before people start experiencing toxic effects.

Those in the study who took 4,000 IU daily more than six times the currently recommended amount experienced a 10.4% reduction in arterial stiffness within four months, the findings showed.

Those who took 2,000 IU a day experienced a 2% decrease in arterial stiffness during the same time frame. People who took the currently recommended dose of 600 IU had a slight increase in arterial stiffness about 0.1%. Those who took the placebos had a 2...

Consumers Prefer Printed Circulars Over Digital "IndyWatch Feed Food"

Dont discard those printed advertising circulars just yet.

A new study from Nielsen Homescan shows that despite the fact U.S. adults are spending more than three hours a day online, 80% of households are turning to those old school printed advertising circulars when making grocery purchasing decisions instead of digital sources of information.

As reported in Food Dive, consumers tend to read circulars at home, where they have an 85% penetration, versus in-store, which has a 79% use penetration. This shows that the majority of consumers are planning what to buy and where to shop before they leave home. But nearly 80% of them are still influenced by printed circulars once they get to the store.

Still, digital marketing tools are gradually catching up, with 77% of of U.S. households visiting retail websites, and 75% checking out targeted emails.  These numbers reflect slight increases a 3% rise for store websites and a 4% increase for store emails equal to the declines in circular penetration at home and in stores between 2014 and 2017, Nielsen reported.

As grocers scramble to jump on the online bandwagon, there are many assumptions being made about todays digital-savvy consumer, most notably that they prefer online platforms and messages to traditional models. But Nielsens data showed that when it comes to circulars, the old-fashioned way may be a retailers best bet for now.

XBT.com, one of the webs most desirable domain names, is up for sale. Its current owners, XBT Holding SA, are seeking 200 BTC or about $2.9 million for the site. The domain is coveted partially because XBT is the abbreviation that many institutional trading platforms use for bitcoin, and also on account of the sites notoriety, having been linked to the hacking of the US Democratic Party.

Its not often a three-letter dot com domain goes up for sale, but when it does, its guaranteed to command a premium price tag. XBT.com is of particular interest to bitcoiners, given that the letters XBT are synonymous with bitcoin in some circles. This connection accounts for why the web hosting company in charge of the domain have elected to capitalize on the bitcoin boom and price the domain in BTC.

200 BTC is the starting bid for XBT.com, whose holding page currently shows a buy now button or the option to place a bid, complete with the price of bitcoin in real-time, denominated in XBT. Theres more to the site than a cool name and a convenient bitcoin connection though: the backstory to XBT.com is the most enthralling part of the whole affair.

As promised yesterday due to a coronal hole on our sun facing earth major quakes are a possibility in the next couple of days see here.
A magnitude 6.0 39km WSW of Pyu, Burma (Myanmar) is the second major quake of  January 2018.
It comes after yesterdays magnitude 7.8 earthquake off the coast of Honduras which was one of the most powerful earthquakes ever recorded in the region.
As the first major quakes of 2018 struck in the last couple of days it should come as no surprise as a new coronal hole faces Earth.
After a quiet period the two are the first major quakes in almost a month.
Solar wind flowing from this coronal hole will reach Earth and cause polar geomagnetic activity on Jan. 13th.
Until then we could be in for more major quakes.
The days before the solar winds arrive can be a vulnerable time on our planet for earthquakes, as seen in the last two days.
Coronal holes are also known to influence other aspects here on Earth they are known to cause problems for animals who rely on the Earths magnetic field to migrate.
The solar wind is also known to cause seizures and migraines in humans and behaviour problems in children and animals.

Mellon Foundation, which had previously awarded Rhizome $600,000 in 2016, allowing them to begin building Webrecorder in the first place. The amounts of money were dealing with feel extraordinary, and they are extraordinary, but the cost of developing software is an expensive proposition, Kaplan added. Were in a unique position as a small cultural organization making free, open source software.

Kaplan noted that Rhizome already works with some very talented developers, so their costs are quite high, not to mention all of the side projects and constituent elements. He said Rhizome will use the award for hiring more developers and staff to work on Webrecorder for the next two years. These are nascent practices, he added, especially in museums, collection, and archives. Preserving web-based content is what Rhizome has been concerned with since the very beginning. We are excited!

PMID:  J Phys Ther Sci. 2017 Oct ;29(10):1708-1711. Epub 2017 Oct 21. PMID: 29184273 Abstract Title:  Elderly-customized hatha yoga effects on the vascular inflammation factors of elderly women. Abstract:  [Purpose] The aim of this study was to examine the effects of the application of elderly-customized hatha yoga on the vascular inflammation factors of elderly women. [Subjects and Methods] This research was conducted with 14 elderly women, between 70 and 80years old, divided into an elderly-customized hatha yoga group (n=7) and a control group (n=7). The application group participated in a hatha yoga program designed to be elderly-friendly for 10 weeks. At the end of the program, the vascular inflammation factors were measured, including the albumin, white blood cell count, fibrinogen, high sensitivity C-reactive protein (hs-CRP), and erythrocyte sedimentation rate (ESR). [Results] In the hatha yoga group, the albumin increased significantly after the application, when compared to the level before the application, while the fibrinogen, hs-CRP, and ESR decreased significantly. In the control group, the vascular inflammation factor levels before and after the application period were not significantly different. [Conclusion] Based on the results of this study, the application of elderly-customized hatha yoga created positive changes in thevascular inflammation factors of elderly women.

Kp Message 1-11-11 (1-11-2017, that is) "IndyWatch Feed Spiritual"

This is a short (I believe) message about things I am sensing, and that on this 1-11-11 day (five, count em, five 1s), I am getting that those who are indeed tuned in to what is energetically happening, are now at a whole new level maybe that should be, a whole new dimension.

And I cannot tell you what that actually means.

Part of this was triggered by a Kent Dunn/Peri Galactic update I just watched (video link). It is short (8-9 minutes) but as he talked it all really made sense. Not at a intellectually I can explain to a professor level, but at a intuitively I GET it level. Feel free to check it out.

As I have noted before in a few posts, I am really not drawn at all to *follow and understand and/or figure out what is happening with every one and every thing with every event every where. NFW!! (N=no, W=way, F=??? (and it could be Flaming!))

To me at this moment, it is a misapplication of the timeline(s) I am currently traveling (and thats another way of saying, Waste of time!). I do watch many videos and read many things, and hear about so and so explaining th...

HOMEMADE ZUPPA TOSCANA SOUP "IndyWatch Feed Photography"

Im cold.  Its cold.  It was time for soup.  Warm, comforting, delicious soup.  With kale, because then I can feel healthy about it!  Look at me eating more veggies like a resolution-keeper in January!  This easy to make homemade zuppa toscana soup is amazing the day you make it and gets better and better through the week after you make it.  What Im saying is, if you think your family will eat the first pot, double it.  You will thank me every day at lunch time.

I found myself at the Mexican market doing my grocery shopping last week so I had to improvise.  Normally the recipe for a soup like this calls for heavy cream, so I did some googling and found that Mexican table cream is a fantastic substitute for heavy cream in recipes.  Its consistency is like a thin sour cream or thicker cream and it is delicious!  It was a happy accident because I actually think I prefer this to using heavy cream and the soup didnt upset my lactose intolerant tummy!

Easy to make sausage potato kale soup

RELATED: BUCHTELN, GERMAN PULL-APART ROLLS

I also recommend getting sausage links and cutting them open to brown them if you can because 3 links of mild italian sausage and 1 link of hot italian sausage seems to be the perfect mixture for this soup.

If fresh links arent an option:

  • If you like things spicy, go for a full pound of spicy italian.
  • If you have kids like I do, just do a pound of mild italian sausage and use red pepper flakes or sriracha to add spice to your own bowl if you need it!

Its sooo good.

Stonehenge to be fitted with sprinklers "IndyWatch Feed Satire"

As a result of the interim report from the Grenfell Inquiry the trustees of the Stonehenge have announced that they are installing sprinklers in the ancient monument. English Heritage and National Trust have found it necessary and their properties are only visited by a handful of pensioners every year, said a Stonehenge spokesman, adding, but we get hundreds of thousands of visitors.  He noted that it was a shame the Stone Age builders didnt  build a couple more, because that would have helped with demand.

He claimed that there was still some confusion whether the stone cladding was acceptable. Weve looked for a kitemark everywhere, but cant find any evidence of the structure being built to an acceptable standard.  It may have to be pulled down if we cant find suitable documentary evidence.

Building Inspectors have been critical of the amount of emphasis Grenfell has created on fire safety. Never mind the travel distances, who checked the footings? asked one Building Inspector, adding, and Im very concerned that one of the lintels will topple off in the wind.  Stonehenge Trustees are confident that the structural components are up to scratch and point out that in reality only a small fraction of the annual visitors are allowed in the monument these days. Ageing bloody Druid hippies, pointed out one trustee, if a lintel fell on them it would do us all a bloody favour, he said.

Is Cryptocurrency the Future or the Future New World Order Currency? "IndyWatch Feed Crypto"

Ryan Cristin, Guest
Waking Times

There is a lot of debate around the intentions behind cryptocurrency, and in particular, Bitcoin itself. Some say that it is the answer we have been waiting for; the very thing that will allow us the freedom to finally side-step the centralized control of the State. While others feel that this is just another long-con deception by the very entities and institutions that never cease in their tireless plots to acquire more control and more power over the average individual.

However, regardless of the intentions behind the Internets creation, it is plain for all to see that it has become quite literally the most important and valuable tool in the battle for the minds of everyone in the US, and the world for that matter. Even if it was designed as a setup, as a mechanism of deception for the unwitting citizen to willingly hand over their personal information (or however one wishes to imagine it) as some still maintain, it has also been used as a powerful tool for good, and that can not be overstated. I also tend to believe that these individuals of malicious intent behind the scenes, just could not...

$15,000 DIY European Style Tiny House With Pizza Oven "IndyWatch Feed Diy"

This is one of the most amazing tiny houses ever. The interior is a true work of art. And the pizza oven is just wow!

The Gypsy Mermaid is undoubtably one of the most creative and artistic tiny house builds that we have visited to date. There are features in this home that I didnt believe to be possible in a tiny house such as a fully functional feature pizza oven right in the middle of the home which provides both ample warmth and amazing pizza!

This couple loves to travel and were greatly inspired by European style in their build, especially when it came to the interior decor of the home. The entire place was constructed by the couple as a DIY build for the unbelievable price of only $15,000, largely thanks to the amount of reclaimed materials that have gone into the tiny homes construction.
