Programming is the new literacy. But how do we write good programs? Here are the recurrent questions we need to solve:
Fun factif you have hard time grinding any of these questions, you are actually doing philosophy.
To see why, lets examine some interesting similarities between programming and philosophical reasoning.
Computers do nothing smarter than we can dothe difference is, they do it with faster speed.
But they cannot solve an actual problem like how do I get to my office from home?
An effective method can (in principle) be carried out by a human being unaided by any machinery except paper and pencil.
The merit of programming still lies in the reasoning part. That is, translating a real world problem into simple instructions that a computer can execute.
Of course, different programming languages have different levels of semantic abstractions. A Python program might be shorter than its C counterpart. But that just changes the amount of translations. We cannot get rid of the translation work. But well leave this discussion for later.
Now we are staring at some problem description. We may first look for small-scale input-output examples to understand the problem:
Induction. We need an algorithm that can handle such examples. Now you are doing induction: generalizing principles from experience.
Deduction. How do we know if it works for other unknown input? We do deduction to prove the correctness of our algorithm.
Ontology. We have to maintain data in computer memory. The goal is to make them efficient for the computers to process. In order words, what data structure can best capture the dynamic flow of my information?
Induction again. Then comes the very final stage: debugging. We induce the buggy part of the program...

Computers are good with numbers, but not that much with textual data. One of the most widely used techniques to process textual data is TF-IDF. In this article, we will learn how it works and what are its features.
From our intuition, we think that the words which appear more often should have a greater weight in textual data analysis, but thats not always the case. Words such as the, will, and youcalled stopwordsappear the most in a corpus of text, but are of very little significance. Instead, the words which are rare are the ones that actually help in distinguishing between the data, and carry more weight.
TF-IDF stands for Term FrequenctInverse Data Frequency. First, we will learn what this term means mathematically. This is w in the third formula below.
Term Frequency (tf): gives us the frequency of the word in each document in the corpus. It is the ratio of number of times the word appears in a document compared to the total number of words in that document. It increases as the number of occurrences of that word within the document increases. Each document has its own tf.
Inverse Data Frequency (idf): used to calculate the weight of rare words across all documents in the corpus. The words that occur rarely in the corpus have a high IDF score. It is given by the equation below.
Combining these two we come up with the TF-IDF score (w) for a word in a document in the corpus. It is the product of tf and idf:
Lets take an example to get a clearer understanding.
Sentence 1 : The car is driven on the road.
Sentence 2: The truck is driven on the highway.
In this example, each sentence is a separate document.
We will now calculate the TF-IDF for the above two documents, which represent our corpus.
From the above table, we can see that TF-IDF of common words was zero, which shows they are not significant. On the other hand, the TF-IDF of car , truck, road, and highway are non-zero. These words have more significance.
The Obama administration granted a license allowing Iran access to the United States financial system despite officials pledges that they would prohibit it. This information is according to a draft report from the Senates Permanent Subcommittee on Investigations.
The Obama administration during the negotiation of the Iran deal misled the American people, said Senator Rob Portman (R-Ohio), subcommittee chairman. I think they did so because they were desperate to get a deal. When the nations involved in the Iran nuclear agreement implemented the deal, Iran had $5.7 billion in assets at Bank Muscat in Muscat, Oman, maintained as Omani rials, according to the subcommittee. Iran wanted to access that money, and using the U.S. financial system to convert it was the most efficient means, even though U.S. sanctions prohibited it, according to the report.
Government officials tried to convince two U.S. banks to execute the conversion. They both declined, citing the complexity and the unwanted appearance involved in processing an Iranian transaction, according to the report. Without a compliant American bank, a senior State Department official said he believed Bank Muscat and Iran eventually used European banks to convert the funds, said the committee.
Portman said his subcommittee began investigating the transaction last summer, reported Fox News. In an interview with an unnamed senior State Department official, the panel said, the official acknowledg...

The bitcoin price has increased from $7,300 to $7,600 over the past 24 hours, sparking optimism regarding the short-term growth of bitcoin. A break to $7,800 could confirm a short-term rally for bitcoin while a drop below the $7,500 mark could lead it back to the $7,300 region, making $6,000 a possibility, yet again. Low

Its hard to put a finger on the precise point at which token overload kicked in. Token fatigue has been brewing for some time, as the spate of new coins, mostly launched by ICOs, has turned into an unstoppable torrent. Every day, cryptocurrency exchanges are barraged with listing applications by ICOs, and they do their best to keep up, for the projects sake, and for the communitys, and because listing tokens is a lucrative business. But at its current rate, the trend is surely unsustainable.
There comes a point at which the crypto community is entitled to ponder how much is too much? How many tokens does there need to be before everyone is sated? From a technical perspective, that point might arrive when all the available three-letter token abbreviations have been used up, which will arrive around the time that the crypto space births its 17,000th altcoin. Then again, there are already multiple tokens sharing the same three-letter ticker, causing no end of confusion on sites like Coinmarketcap. There are also tokens claiming four- and five-letter abbreviations, suggesting that a shortage of desirable tickers wont be enough to curtail the madness.
Cryptocurrency startup Circle is looking to enroll as a licensed bank in the U.S., according to Bloomberg. In a report published Wednesday, Bloomberg said that alongside the banking license, Circle that delivers a cryptocurrency pocket and investment system, as well as the OTC cryptographic trade service will also strive to enroll with the Securities and Exchange Commission as a brokerage and trading platform. The transition from Goldman Sachs endorsed company, if successful, will allow it to trade crypto tokens which are considered as securities from the U.S. And would also allow it to circumvent the complexities of enrolling as a cryptocurrency company with regulators in all 50 states.
Youre in a position to have a single conversation, Circles chief compliance officer, Robert Bench, told Bloomberg. It is difficult to have 50 conversations. Following early talks with the Office of the Comptroller of the Currency over the banking registration, as well as with the SEC and the Financial Industry Regulatory Authority, Circles said itd probably seek SEC regulation before moving to make an application for the banking license, in accordance with the report. Jeremy Allaire, Circles Chief executive officer, was quoted as saying in an interview: To hold reserves with the Federal Reserve. To directly settle with some other monies from other markets around the globe through these networks which can improve the efficiency of what we provide, it can reduce the expenses.
He added that the company will also provide regulators with a fantastic guinea pig in explorations of regulatory frameworks as Wall Street giants move closer to adopting cryptocurrency. The rough move would seem to align well with Circles notable aim, as mentioned by CoinDesk in October 2017, to finally offer a vast range of digital assets. I think what wed be comfortable saying is that digital assets that arent only digital monies, but a broader array of assets it is an area which has grown a whole lot, but that is not readily accessible to mainstream investors, Allaire told CoinDesk in the time.
Further encouraging that aim, Circle acquired the Poloniex exchange in Feb to build an exchange service which ultimately will offer you a host of cryptocurrencies. Sources suggested in the time that the company put down about $400 million to the deal. Investors will also be seeing possible in the firms widening scope, with Circle shutting a $110 million Series E fundraising round in May. Investment firm VanEck has partnered with financial services company SolidX in the most recent attempt to launch the first bitcoin exchange traded fund. The companies announced on Wednesday that theyd list a physically backed bitcoin Exchange-traded fund which would be assured against the loss or theft of bitcoin.. Under the agreement, VanEck will market the Exchange-traded fund, while SolidX will act as a sponsor, based on a news release. The companies noted that both have already filed individually to list the bitcoin ETFs on several stock exchanges. VanEck chief executive Jan van Eck said bitcoin is a legitimate investment option, as a form of digital gold that might make sense for investors portfolios.
The Chief executive officer noted that the Exchange-traded fund hasnt yet been created, saying are pleased to join with in supporting the effort to bring a physically backed bitcoin Exchange-traded fund to market. When asked by CoinDesk, he declined to provide details on what assets will be utilized to back the fund. Neither SolidX nor VanEck has succeeded in starting a bitcoin Exchange-traded fund to date. As previously reported by CoinDesk, both companies withdrew previous efforts at launching the products at the request of the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission. Van Eck expressed optimism about the funds possible, despite the regulatory obstacles theyve Faced, saying: We think that collectively well build something which can be much better than other constructs currently making their way throughout the regulatory process.
A correctly constructed physically backed bitcoin Exchange-traded fund would be designed to provide exposure to the price of bitcoin, and an insurance component will assist protect shareholders against the operational risk of sourcing and holding bitcoin.. Applications of blockchains extend far beyond cryptocurrencies.
Electronic sensor networks powered by the Internet of Things (IoT)
are an untapped platform for deploying the next generation of
blockchain technology, which stands to improve operating efficiency
in numerous sectors, including manufacturing supply chains.
The key challenge to adopting blockchain technology on a large scale is adequately quantifying the costs and risks of deployment and ensuring security. Blockchains were first adopted in fintech, where products have short qualification cycles and are not safety critical. IoT networks can help to address these hurdles and extend blockchain technology to other sectors that require higher reliability.
In a blockchain-powered supply chain, real-time IoT sensors enable authenticated workflow automation through smart contracts self-executing scripts that can be triggered by blockchain transactions.
Smart contracts allow IoT sensor nodes to bypass the middle man (i.e., a central authentication server). To validate activity on the network, sensor nodes simply need to communicate with their nearest neighbors, which could then quickly authenticate new activities or transactions without connecting to a central server in the cloud or farther away in a private network.
As such, IoT blockchain networks accelerate data exchange in manufacturing supply chains, thus increasing operational efficiency and reducing system vulnerability.
The trade-off in operating efficiency versus the cost of energy and network maintenance deserves some attention. While a blockchain IoT network may reduce the number of bottlenecks in a supply chain, the cost of energy for each sensor to continuously validate transactions and update its copy of the distributed blockchain ledger is not a commonly published metric. Frequent blockchain updates also reduce the average sensor lifetime, thus increasing the frequency and cost of part replacement.
The security of IoT blockchain networks is also not well understood. Unlike a public cryptocurrency network (where most of the mining power is not controlled by any single user), the mining or validation pool in a private blockchain may be limited to the nodes in the network.
An intruder with more computing power than 50 percent of the IoT nodes on the private network...

Despite the mainstream media and the Telecomm industrys claims that there are no connections between cellphones and negative health effects, particularly cancer, the fact is that the manuals of the devices manufactured by the same industry admit that they do.
Indeed, the contradiction between their public statements and the statements on their manuals are blaringly obvious. Any warnings regarding the negative effects of these now ubiquitous devices are dismissed as conspiracy theory, paranoia, or being anti science and anti technology.
However, the evidence is clear that wireless devices are effecting our health and environment. Below are just a few bullet points to keep in mind the next time you use or even sit next to your wireless device....

The newly established publishing arm of the Chicago Review of Books identifies itself as a small press to republish classic Chicago literature in beautiful new editions.
But of what can a classic be said to consist? Looking at the etymology of the term, one finds that the meaning of or belonging to the highest class; approved as a model dates to the 1610s, and derives from the Latin classicus, relating to the highest classes of the Roman peoplein other words superior.
The obvious question arises: superior to what and according to whom? Like so many highly subjective designations, the clearest definitions of classic are usually ostensive. The definer simply points to examples and says Thatthats what we mean.
The text towards which Chicago Review of Books Press points to inaugurate their new series is Henry Blake Fullers The Cliff-Dwellers, which they declare to be the first great Chicago novel and cite as having been listed by Chicago magazine as number six in their 2010 list of The Top 40 Chicago Novels. In his introduction to the reissue, Chicago Review of Books editor-in-chief Adam Morgan quotes Dr. Joseph Dimuro of UCLA as calling Cliff-Dwellers, Arguably the first important novel of the American city.
Henry Blake Fuller was born in 1857 and died in 1929, and was, as the bio accompanying this newest edition explains, Chicagos first LGBTQ novelist, and the author of With the Procession, Under the Skylights and Bertram Copes Year, often considered the first American gay novel.
Cliff-Dwellers is Fullers third novel, but his first to view the world through the lens of social realism. The story was so shocking and unsparing in its depiction of the citys crude industrialization, corrupt businessmen, and dysfunctional upper-class families, no Chicago newspapers would run it, Morgan notes in his introduction. The novel was originally serialized chapter by chapter in the New York based Harpers Weekly, from June to August of 1893, the same year as the Chicago Worlds fair.
Microwave technology seems to have been around forever, so thats probably why very few tech consumers question its safety. However, consumers should know the latest and most coveted update to technology is the Internet of Things, which will become Big Brother Personified.
Not only will the IoT report back (i.e., spy?) to high-speed computer data centers consumers EVERY activity, IoT will super-saturate your physical body and brain with extremely rapid oscillation Gigahertz (GHz) frequencies needed to implement IoT, which probably will become physically uncomfortable, as being reported by current research studies.

Mr Tsoukalos presented his incredible theory about the origins of religion at the annual Contact in the Desert UFO conference in Indiana Wells, California, this weekend.
The TV conspiracy theorist known for hosting Ancient Aliens on the History Channel gave an impassioned two-hour talk about ancient encounters between humans and extraterrestrial astronauts.
The UFO-hunter alleged early people misrepresented alien visitors as deities and their technology was interpreted as magic.
He said: The reason that were in the crap that were in today is because of misunderstood technology.
The reason we have religion today is because of misunderstood visits of extra-terrestrials.
According to Mr Tsoukalos, examples of the misrepresented technology are evident in the Egyptian and Central American Pyramids as well as ancient literature and art.
The TV host blamed archaeologists for dismissing evidence of alien visitors in ancient relics as artwork of gods, magic and other fantastical beings.
Among other things, the Ancient Aliens host claimed the Earth is round and not flat, humans will one day explore the far corners of space and aliens do in fact need space suits when travelling through space.
He said: If the alien guy says that the Earth is round, trust me, its round.
Mr Tsoukalos is a vocal proponent of the idea alien astronauts interacted with ancient humans in the past.
His offbeat theories came to prominence and online fame thanks to his appearances on the History Channel series Ancient Aliens.
The TV host has since appeared on the Travel Channel, the Sci-Fi Channel and National Geographic.
However, his work on Ancient Aliens has been described by audiences to be farfetched and extremely speculative.
Historian Ronald Fritze criticised the pseudohistory presented by the shows experts.
He said: The producers provided the window dressing of giving both the true believers and the skeptics some screen time.
In the end, however, the final presentation was heavily stacked in favour of those who believe in ancient astronauts.

Death Comes to Dogwood Manor is the 4th book in the Missy DuBois cozy mystery series, written by Sandra Bretting and published in June, 2018. I won an ARC of this book through a cozy mystery group I subscribe to and have previously read the 3rd book in the series. At some point, Ill go back to read book one and two once my TBR is a bit shorter this year!
In this book, Missy, a milliner in Louisiana, is distracted and accidentally sideswipes another car. She attempts to do the proper thing by notifying the owner, a rich man sweeping up local mansions and converting them into mini-hotels. Shes met him before, and hes not a very kind person, but in this instance, he himself seems distracted by the renovation going on at the house. A few days later she finds him dead. At the same time, Missys trying to build up her business and lands a potential big win when a magazine wants to publish an article about her shop. As she stumbles upon several people connected to the deceased man, and works with a designer to freshen up her shop before the photo shoot, everything starts to fall apart and come together in very interesting ways.

Herbs can be very beneficial for your pets for the same reasons they can help you: they are not as invasive nor addictive as pharmacological medications, and they have fewer side effects when administered properly and correctly. As a matter of fact, throughout history, animals have even been known to instinctively consume wild plants and herbs that have helped them with an ailment or illness. Theres even a term for it: zoopharmacognosy.
This primer on herbal and naturopathic aids for your pets will provide you tips that have proven results but sufficient research and planning must be undertaken on your part. Precautions must be taken to avoid accidentally giving them too much of an herb or having it create an adverse reaction if they are on medication or have an underlying health problem.
While veterinarians are good for charting pets health, a downside is pets will often be subjected to expensive blood-work tests and diagnostic workups that run hundreds of dollars, most of the time yielding nothing conclusiveexcept a bill for you to pay. After some vet visits, you may even feel shortchanged and begin to look at alternative treatments.

Facebook has data-sharing partnerships with at least four Chinese electronics companies, including a manufacturing giant that has a close relationship with Chinas government. The agreements gave private access to some user data to Huawei, a telecommunications equipment company that has been flagged by American intelligence officials as a national security threat.
Whether Huawei is a threat or not isnt really the concern. This ones on Facebook, once again, for giving access to user data to others. According to CNBC, the four partnerships between Facebook and the Chinese firms remain in effect, but Facebook officials said in an interview that the company would wind down the Huawei deal by the end of the week.
At this point, anyone still trusting Facebook to protect your data is absolutely insane. But of course, the social media giant made these agreements for themselves, to boost their own financial status and ability to collect data on everyone. The deals gave Facebook an early foothold in the mobile market starting in 2007. This was before stand-alone Facebook apps worked well on phones, and allowed device makers to offer some Facebook features, such as address books, like buttons and status updates.
Facebook officials said the agreements with the Chinese companies allowed them access similar to what was offered to BlackBerry, which could retrieve detailed information on both device users and all of their friends. This included religious and political leanings, work and education history and relationship status.
Huawei used its private access to feed a social phone app that let users view messages and social media accounts in one place, according to the officials. Facebook representatives said the data shared with Huawei stayed on its phones, not the companys servers; but i...

When we set out to design and decorate our homes, more often than not we turn to sources such as Pinterest, HGTV, and our favorite shelter magazines to draw inspiration. We find ourselves bookmarking pages and pinning our way through color palettes and furniture pieces, feverishly scoping out the latest trends to guide us in creating beautiful interiors. But for some, the story of creating home is much more deeply rooted in culture, heritage, and/or religion. Such is the case for Lena Fuentes and her family in their Sacramento, CA home.

Some people are asking me, Why another series of webinars on withdrawing from psychiatric drugs? Thats a reasonable question given that our first series, Withdrawal from Psychiatric Drugs, covered a lot of territory. We presented general information as well as more specific subjects like wellness, personal experiences, research findings, and the evidence base for drug withdrawal.
But this subject is a complex one, and our first course was just our start in exploring this topic. With this second course we are focusing on the challenges that drug withdrawal presents to prescribers.
As many have noted, prescribers may have extensive experience getting patients on psychiatric medications and then managing their drug use, but little or no experience helping patients taper off the drugs. As some have quipped, prescribers have learned to fly the plan but not land it.
Our presenters will tell about what they have learned about drug tapering through their experience and research. The webinars include:
Dr. Joanna Moncrieff on the effects of withdrawal from neuroleptics and so-called antidepressants.
Dr. Sandra Steingard on her experience with working in a public mental health setting.
Dr. David Healy and colleague Johanna Ryan on the sexual dysfunction related to SSRI withdrawal.
Dr. Sami Timimi reviewing the issues in helping children and adolescents withdraw from a variety of psychiatric drugs.
