Urgent Need to Prepare for Manmade Virus Attacks, New Report Warns "IndyWatch Feed Survival"

The rapid rise of synthetic biology, a futuristic field of science that seeks to master the machinery of life, has raised the risk of a new generation of bioweapons, according a major US report into the state of the art.

Advances in the area mean that scientists now have the capability to recreate dangerous viruses from scratch; make harmful bacteria more deadly; and modify common microbes so that they churn out lethal toxins once they enter the body.

An older gentleman was at the doctor for his annual physical. The doctor had ordered a blood panel and some other routine tests but was pleased to tell the old timer that he was in great shape. As he was wrapping things up he asked if the gentleman had any other concerns.

Book Review: Murder on Tyneside by Eileen Thornton "IndyWatch Feed Literature"

If youre a fan of British crime thrillers, cozy mysteries, Agatha Christie-esque puzzles, or charming women who are inadvertently thrown in the middle of a murder, Murder on Tyneside is a book you will enjoy. Author Eileen Thorntondelivers quite a caper with a wonderful side slice of charisma and old-fashioned wit with the launch of her Tyneside mystery series. The book was published in late 2016 amidst a sea of her other fun-sounding stories, but this had the most appeal when I decided to sample a Thornton novel. At the time, I hadnt realized it was a series nor did I know what Tyneside was, but its premise drew me in. Now Ive been happily clued into both!

Recent widow in her mid-50s, Agnes Lockwood, travels back home to try to figure out whats next in her life. From the very first chapter, you can tell she misses her husband, but shes also practical enough to want to enjoy the rest of her life despite the recent loss. I fancy her as a cross between Nancy Drew and Miss Marple not quite young enough to be a funny, flirtatious girl about town, but not old enough to seem like a nosy aging neighbor. Shes witty and smart, but cautious and curious all the same. Someone Id love to have a few drinks with and study the people sitting in the room around us. And thats basically how she...

Invisible (but crucial) considerations to take into account when building a website "IndyWatch Feed Education"

The success of a website isnt solely contingent on its beauty

An ugly website will surely fail, right?

Despite its homely appearance, Craigslist operates in 70 countries and receives 50 billion page views per month.*

How can this be? The fonts used are Arial and Times New Roman. Bland color scheme. Where are the pretty pictures?

Is Craigslist an anomaly?

Example number two

Few people would try to convince you that Reddit is one of the more visually compelling sites accessible via the world wide web. Nevertheless, Reddit is the 4th most visited website in the United States and ranks 6th globally.**

The composition is crowded! Ugh, those tabs and buttons look so dated!

These aesthetically-challenged websites are absolutely crushing it, because theyre gorgeous behind the scenes and they provide unique value to their visitors.

Im not writing this post to encourage you to abandon your personal sense of aesthetics. But, what Im saying is that sometimes the invisible aspects of a website are even more important than the visible ones.

The Invisible Man (1933)

Learning from my mistakes

In July 2007, I abruptly lost my job as a Graphic Designer when the corporation that I worked for declared bankruptcy. Id been a part of the internal Marketing team, and my responsibilities included the design of flyers, postcards, brochures, and other printed marketing materials.

I began to look for a new job and found a number of openings in web development. Technically, I didnt have much experience. But I was confident that designing for the web was the same as designing for print.

During the last decade, I have learned that I was very wrong.

In recent years, you have likely heard the proclamation that print is dead. Yet there are many that still approach digital content with the same mindset that they applied to printed material, just as I did 10 years ago.

In print, we were entranced by visual beauty. We took pride in good kerning and had strong allegiances to our favorite fonts. We accessorized our designs with spot varnish and care...

A Brief History of .22 Rimfire Ammunition

The rimfire principle was used to create the first successful self-contained metallic ammunition. Rimfire cases are constructed with the priming compound spun inside the rim of the copper or brass case, which is crushed by the blow of the firing pin to ignite the main powder charge.

The first rimfire cartridges were .22s, but after the type became established many larger caliber rimfire cartridges were developed in the mid to late 19th...

The U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission is once more taking action against a co founder of the PlexCoin cryptocurrency undertaking, having previously sued him over offenses violations and fraud at 2017. On June 15, the SEC obtained an emergency court order unsealed on June 18 to freeze the assets of Dominic Lacroix, who the agency referred to as a recidivist Quebec securities legislation violator over his previous effort to establish a token sale, or an initial coin offering one officials have announced a full fledged cyber scam. . Last December, Lacroix, the projects other co founder Sabrina Paradis Royer and their company PlexCorp, have been sued for securities fraud and also had their assets frozen in a comparable emergency order.

But, an unknown amount was believed to remain in cryptocurrency purses controlled by the company. According to a SEC litigation release dated Wednesday, the most recent petition for an asset order filed at a federal court in New York alleges additional wrongdoing since the preceding freeze.

The bureau said: Lacroix had been using secret accounts, including an account of his brothers name however that he controlled, to dispel for personal use digital assets obtained from investors throughout the PlexCoin First Coin Offering. . Apart from the SECs 2017 actions from project and its creators, a Canadian court ordered two months prison sentence contrary to Lacroix and $100, 000 in the form of fines against his company for contempt of court. The main pillars of learning programming and why beginners should master them. "IndyWatch Feed Education"

I have been programming for more than 20 years. During that time, Ive had the pleasure to work with many people, from whom I learned a lot. Ive also worked with many students, coming fresh from university, with whom I had to take on the role of a teacher or mentor.

Lately, I have been involved as a trainer in a program that teaches coding to absolute beginners.

Learning how to program is hard. I often find that university courses and bootcamps miss important aspects of programming and take poor approaches to teaching rookies.

I want to share the five basic pillars I believe a successful programming course should build upon. As always, I am addressing the context of mainstream web applications.

A rookies goal is to master the fundamentals of programming and to understand the importance of libraries and frameworks.

Advanced topics such as the cloud, operations in general, or build tools should not be part of the curriculum. I am also skeptical when it comes to Design Patterns. They presume experience that beginners never have.

So lets look at where new programmers should start.

Test-Driven Development (TDD)

TDD brings a lot of benefits. Unfortunately, it is an advanced topic that beginners are not entirely ready for.

Beginners shouldnt write tests. This would be too much for their basic skill levels. Instead, they should learn how to use and work with tests.

Each programming course should center around exercises. I extend my exercises with unit tests and provide the students an environment which is already setup for running those tests.

All the students have to do is write their code and then watch the lights of the testrunner turning from red to green. The resulting gamification is a nice side effect.

For example: If the selected technology is Spring, I provide the exercises and tests within a Spring project. The students dont need to know anything about Spring. All they need to know is the location of the exercises and the button to trigger the tests.

Additionally, students must know how to use a debugger and have a Read-Eval-Print Loop (REPL) handy. The ability to analyse code during runtime and to have a playground for small experiments is essential in TDD.

The main point is to ensure students dont have to learn basic TDD behaviours after theyve acquired core programming skills. Changing habits later in the...

Flutter is awesome. Heres how you can start learning about it right now. "IndyWatch Feed Education"

Flutter is Googles mobile app SDK for crafting high-quality native interfaces on iOS and Android in record time. Flutter works with existing code, is used by developers and organisations around the world, and is free and open source.

For a long time, Ive been thinking about creating a list of awesome resources that would help anyone get started with Flutter. If you already know what Flutter is and why it is awesome, keep reading.

If youd like to know more about Flutter, Id recommend that you read about it here and here. Once youre sold on the idea of Flutter, you can come back to this article.

Ive tried out most of the resources mentioned below, and theyve helped me get acquainted with Flutter quickly. A few others mentioned below are very popular in the Flutter community.

1. FragmentedCast

This one is gold . Before you dive into coding Flutter apps, you should really go through the following two episodes. Theyll help you understand how Flutter came into existence and what it is capable of:

If I had not listened to these back in March, I probably wouldnt have been excited to try out Flutter immediately. The two episodes include everything you need to know about the What and How of Flutter.

2. Flutter Docs

It may seem obvious, but the official documentation is really, really good and thorough. It includes easy to grasp examples for basic use cases. The best part is that it also includes documentation for seasoned Android, iOS, React Native and Web developers, so that you can easily relate Flutter to your current knowledge:

3. Google Codelabs

A step-by-step guide to building awesome Flutter apps? What kind of a beginner wouldnt want that? This is a must go-through for every beginner.

Summer solstice 2018 spiritual meaning: What does the solstice mean for YOU? "IndyWatch Feed Uncanny"

The Summer Solstice will usher in the astronomical start of summer in the Northern Hemisphere on Thursday, June 21.

The solstice occurs when Earth is titled 23.5 degrees on its axis towards the sun, making the day it falls on the day with the longest daylight hours.

But outside of the science behind the astronomical event, many are interested in the astrological and spiritual significance of the event.

So what exactly is the mystic meaning of the 2018 Summer Solstice?

For many, the Summer Solstice marks a time of celebration and festivities connected to the reverence of Mother Nature and the sun.

Astrologer and Core Energy Life Coach Cathy Lynn Pagano argued the solstice is a high point for personal growth.

She said: Summer Solstice is another power gate of the Wheel of the Year, the marriage of Heaven and Earth on the longest day and shortest night of the year.

This solar high point is a time of fertility and growth, heralding the long lazy days of summer.

Dont forget to tend your fields this summer and see what you harvest in the fall.

Jon Haase and Jenny Resnick, of The Spiritual Sun, similarly claim the solstice carries a powerful deeper message about the cycle of life, death and rebirth.

Melanie Beckler, author of Angel Messages, said the Summer Solstice is a time of energetic opening and celestial potential pouring out from the sun.

She explained: Symbolically the Summer Solstice represented enlightenment, awakening and the triumph of lightness over darkness.

During the time of the Summer solstice, its a time to celebrate forward movement advancing further into light  and remembering and honouring the intrinsic light within yourself.

The Summer Solstice is all about expressing gratitude for the gifts of harvest, bounty and abundance.

Ms Beckler added the solstice is the perfect opportunity to connect with and embrace with nature.

Astrologers Ophira and Tali Edut, dubbed the Astro Twins, said the solstice tomorrow will kick off Cancer season in astrology.

As the sun appears to pass over the Tropic of Cancer the sun will enter the astrological part of the zodiac representing the Cancer.

The season of Cancer will last 30 days and is a good time to balance masculine and feminine energies.

The Astro Twins said: This is the ideal time to consider ways w...

Learn to code, the hard way "IndyWatch Feed Education"

These quick tricks will make learning to code as difficult and unrewarding as possible! *

Warning: contains satire

A pinch of salt Photo by Mira Bozhko on Unsplash.

1. Pick a really difficult language

Make sure to choose a difficult programming language. This will really set back your learn-to-code journey before its even started.

Dont take any chances here. You may have heard some folks say that C++ or Java are challenging for beginners. But, even these can be mastered with a little extra patience and perseverance.

Perhaps you could pick up an old-fashioned language, like COBOL or PL/I. Or how about something really low level like assembly, or even machine code?

For a certain bet, why not try an esoteric language like Malbolge or Befunge or INTERCAL? Starting out with one of these languages will set you back several years already. Plus, their lack of job prospects will thoroughly demotivate you.

Whatever you do, dont pick a modern, accessible and universally used language like JavaScript or Python or Ruby.

They might be in great demand and have countless free learning resources out there on the web. They may have large, supportive communities of fellow learners.

But wheres the struggle in all that?

If learning to code doesnt make you melancholy, youre doing it wrong. Photo by Ethan Sykes on...

Googles Artificial Intelligence Can Predict Your Death With 95% Accuracy "IndyWatch Feed Survival"

Googles neverending quest to obtain as much information about you as possible has just crossed into a rather eerie territory.  The tech companys artificial intelligence is now so advanced that it can predict when you will die with 95 percent accuracy.

Things feel as they are drifting toward the macabre when it comes to advances in technology.  Nothing seals that quite like the announcement of Googles ability to predict your death with stunning accuracy using artificial intelligence. As reported by IFL Science, the new ability to use AI to predict death is outlined in a study recently published in npj Digital Medicine. The study involves new Artificial Intelligence (AI) that Googles Medical Brain team have been working on. It has been trained to predict how likely it is that patients entering a hospital will make it out alive.

Bring on the death panels. As if things arent scary enough, imagine how horrifying this technologys use could be especially if the government ever gains complete control of the healthcare system.  Googles AI would simply say theres not a high likelihood of a person making it out of the hospital alive, so no care will be given.  Humanity is most definitely devolving.

The AI is 95% accurate which is much more accurate than the current early warning score system used in hospitals now.

Overall, the study found that the AI was able to predict mortality 24 hours after admission with 95 percent accuracy at one of the hospitals trialed, and 93 percent at the other. This was significantly better than the hospitals traditional predictive model (the augmented Early Warning Score), which predicted mortality with 85 and 86 percent accuracy respectively. IFL Science

In one instance reported in the study, a patient with late-stage breast cancer was admitted to hospital. Her lungs were filled with fluid, she was seen by several doctors and then underwent a scan. According to the hospitals assessment, she had a 9.3 percent chance of dying during her stay, based on her vital signs such as respiratory rate, blood p...

The Gibeah Incident: Ancient Israels First Civil War Over a Concubine "IndyWatch Feed Uncanny"

The first civil war among the tribes of Israel broke out over the Gibeah incident, which was between the Israelite confederation and the tribe of Benjamin. While this incident is normally placed towards the end of the book of Judges, Chapters 19-21, the incident may have taken place much earlier perhaps after the death of Othniel during the 40 years of peace, from external threats. Therefore, the incident at Gibeah should be placed in Judges 3 between the time of Othniel and Ehud. The argument for this placement is due to Judges 20:28 mentioning one Phinehas, the son of Eleazar, the son of Aaron, who participated in the battle, which is the same Phinehas that is mentioned in Exodus 6:25 and much so during the remaining last few decades of Moses life and during Joshuas entire reign. Phinehas could not have lived that long, as he would have been well over 150 years old.

Twelve Tribes of Israel ( CC BY-SA 3.0)

Decline of the Unity of the 12 Tribes

To understand how this civil war came about one must first look at its causes, long before the incident took place. The first clue to understanding the ensuing civil war, is an inspection as to how the tribes of Israel went from unification to collapse, and it begins with the era of Joshua. And when Joshua had let the people go, the children of Israel went every man unto his inheritance to possess the land.  The Israelite army was still fundamentally intact, even after the death of Joshua and with a new generation in charge. But as one generation passes down authority, a new generation rises to the challenge, and it was this new generation that ultimately and unknowingly collapsed the Israelite military system. While the Israelites knew that they were related ethnically, they had gradually grown apart and decided it was to their economic benefit to live in peace with the Canaanites. In doing so, like all families over time, they become distant and unknowing to one another; they were related, but only in name. This explains, if one is familiar with the story of Othniel and the many judges to come after these events, why one rarely reads of Israel uniting and fully mobilizing for war. But Israel would unite over an incident involving a Levite and his concubine.

The Number One Thing Psychiatry Can Learn from Shamanism "IndyWatch Feed Health"

By Dylan Charles

Something important is missing from the psychiatric model of mental illness. Its not a secret or anything, but rather more of an omission. It should be there, but by no accident its absent.

You see, human beings are multi-dimensional. We are made up of mind, body and spirit. All three are utterly essential components of life, and until the transhumanists figure out how to disembody the mind, our wellness and happiness is fully reliant on the synergistic balance between these three elements.

Sure, psychiatry along with the medical sciences has the body well enough figured out. And theyve produced copious theories along with tomes of supporting research on the chemical relation between the body and the mind. With all of this they can haphazardly tweak the performance of the mind by dumping chemicals into the body, even if they have to add more chemicals to offset the effects of the initial chemicals.

Theyve also grown quite adept at selling the idea of better living through chemistry.

A fine example is the top-selling pharmaceutical Lyrica. It was designed to treat fibromyalgia and muscle and nerve pain, but is now widely overprescribed as an anti-anxiety and antidepressant. Such a warped interpretation of the mind-body connection. In 2016, sales of Lyrica netted over...

Duke Students to Support Coursera for Refugee Learners in Berlin "IndyWatch Feed Education"

Since the onset of the Syrian war in 2011 millions of civilians have fled their homeland, creating the biggest refugee crisis since WWII.

This summer, Duke University students will play a part in helping refugee learners who have been dislocated not just from their homes, but from their schools and education system. Their volunteer contributions are part of a new collaboration between Duke and Kiron Open Higher Education, a Berlin-based non-governmental organization. Kiron helps refugees advance their education and career opportunities through digital learning.

Starting in July, Duke students will travel to Berlin to provide in-person support for refugee learners taking, among others, Dukes online courses. With Coursera for Refugees, Duke has reached displaced persons worldwide through its online courses. This year, for the first time, Duke students will encounter refugee learners in person.

We are really excited to initiate the collaboration with Duke and host the students in Berlin, said Tobias Ernst, CEO of Kiron. When Duke and Coursera contacted us, we knew this would be right up our alley: Having students from one of the best universities in the world with strong interests and educational experience in the refugee cause will notably contribute to and enrich our daily work. We are very excited to take the next steps together.

The students are traveling to Berlin for a six-week study abroad program on issues surrounding Middle Eastern communities in Europe. The program will be led by two U.S. scholars: Erda Gknar, Associate Professor of Asian Middle Eastern Studies at Duke, and Banu Gkarksel, Associate Professor of Geography at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. While in Germany, the students will spend half of their time with Gkarksel and Gknar studying topics such as the impact of Turkish inhabitants and culture...

What Is Andre Dubus Doing, Anyway? "IndyWatch Feed Literature"

Photo: by Marion Ettlinger

Andre Dubus and I were once on book tour together. Because he was wheelchair-bound by this time, we were transported by hired car. Outside Boston, actually not so close to Boston, the car broke down. Do I remember correctly that this happened on a holiday weekend, or am I still trying to make sense of it? We sat in the back seat. Andres friend Jack was in the seat next to the driver. There were numerous phone calls, many moments when we had, or lost, hope. We reached our publishers voicemail. Nobody respondedwell, there was talk, but no one did anything, as time passed and time passed. Finally, we tried to get a car by calling 1-800-RENTACAR, but that didnt work either. A cop car pulled into the breakdown lane, assessed the situation, and raced off, lights blinking. That was the end of that. Hours into this, my husband and his best friend fetched me. They insisted: I must go because they were all going to get down the hill somehow and pee. Id be seeing him soon, he said. One of the group had finally managed to summon help: a tow truck, another rental car, I dont remember. I left amid cries of Good sport! and See you next week! feeling that I should stay. (Yes, I should have.)

During this debacle, I doubt I had reason to reflect on the fact that Andre and I were writers. What would that matter? If youre busted flat in Baton Rouge, who cares that its a double entendre? Off I went. My pal and I would rendezvous soon in Portland, Maine.

As it turned out, Andre didnt make it to Portland. In a coffee shop there, I overheard a young guy trying to convince a pretty woman hed just met to go to the library reading. Hes a kind of a Raymond Carver character, he said. And Ive never heard of her. Off her went, to do a solo.

When I think of Andre, a visual image of us in the back seat inevitably returns: the world whizzing by, everyones bright ideas totally ineffective, the distracting and effective bleak humor that soon set in, how strange it was that a car belonging to a big company had broken down and there was no one to help us. The oddity of the situation became the prevailing reality. This isnt my segue into comparing life to f...

Why are we slowly poisoning some of the bravest people in this country? "IndyWatch Feed Health"

Lithium Iron Battery For Solar Off-Grid Alternative Energy Systems "IndyWatch Feed Survival"

The Lithium Iron battery from Iron Edison has significant advantages for solar panel alternative energy storage. Consider these benefits over Lead Acid: 1. SAFE. Unlike lithium-ion cobalt batteries that you may have heard about (catching fire in laptops, mobile phones), the Lithium Iron phosphate battery from Iron Edison (made in Denver Colorado) will not explode or catch fire. Its thermal stability makes it safe. No thermal runaway. 2. MORE ENERGY. Its electrochemical capacity allows it to store more energy than lead acid. Thus the ability to design smaller more efficient battery sizes. Typically 1/4 the size and weight of lead

Brazils Central Bank Plans Blockchain Data Exchange for Regulators "IndyWatch Feed Crypto"

Brazil could soon have a brand new blockchain platform to ensure the authenticity of info exchanged between the nations fiscal authorities. Brazils main bank, Banco Central do Brasil, announced Tuesday that its assembled the platform so as to allow secure information sharing between itself along with other domestic financial regulators, like the nations Superintendency of Private Insurance, the Brazilian Securities and Exchange Commission and national superintendence of Complementary Pensions. In its release, BCB credits blockchain technologies for its capacity to provide a horizontal network of info, as well as immutable information storage. The platform, dubbed Pier, will be utilized to exchange information associated with the authorization processes of financial institutions, including punitive processes, administrator performance and the management of corporate entities regulated by the central bank.

By incorporating blockchain technology, Pier is said to get rid of the hierarchical character of traditional business models and help regulators in bypassing concentrated entities when communicating. In addition, it might assist in preventing 3rd parties tampering with the info, because the platform stores each information request with cryptographic signatures, the release states. Despite having previously likened bitcoin into a pyramid scheme, Banco Central do Brasil has been enthusiastically experimenting with blockchain in the last year. The main bank told CoinDesk in Nov 2017 that it was restarting work with the most recent iteration of R3s Corda dispersed ledger platform, having halted development since the older technology has been considered too stern.

Although it isnt clear from the information given which blockchain Pier is based on, the BCB said in the Nov interview that it was also developing proofs-of concept on four platforms ethereum, JPMorgans Quorum and Hyperledger Fabric, alongside Corda. Pier began development with the technical assistance of the Department of Informatics in the Federal University of Maranh, In August 2017, in accordance with the release. Its currently undergoing testing in DeINF to smooth any technical problems before a possible launch planned for the end of 2018. BCB image via Shutterstock. Why The Abject Silence From The Left About Child Migrant Detentions Under Obama? "IndyWatch Feed Survival"

This report was originally published by Tyler Durden at Zero Hedge

Unless youve completely avoided media for the past two or three days, youre no doubt aware by now that the controversy over the Trump administrations decision to separate migrant children from their detained parents after theyve been caught illegally crossing the border has exploded since ProPublica published a recording of children whod been captured by ICE crying out for their parents, and the agency allowed a handful of reporters on a supervised visit of the facility where many of the children are housed.

However, the liberals who have been responded with a non-stop barrage of social media attacks on the President and those who voted for him, have apparently forgot that the US has been housing migrant minors for years and that a sizable increase in the minor population held in US facilities occurred under Nobel Peace Prize winner President Obama. To drive this point home, Breitbart reporter Brandon Darby reminded us of this fact by tweeting photos from his 2014 visit to one such migrant detention center (as most should recognize, Obama was president at the time).

As the photos reveal, the cages that have become a locus of liberal fury are just like the ones used during the Obama-era. And yet, Darby noted that his original story about the holding centers was met with abject silence from the left. As anybody whos been paying attention to the data would know, border crossings have only recently started to pick back up after an unprecedented drop last year, meaning Trumps deportation numbers havent risen back to the highs reached under his predecessor, who carried out a record 97,000 criminal prosecutions for illegal border crossings in 2013, according to the Daily Caller.

Some of the photos shared by Darby can be seen below. Notice they all have two things in common: Theyre virtually indistinguishable from the photos of the detention centers being run by ICE today. Yet they...

A Student's Well-Maintained Vintage Charmer, Design*Sponge

Its only fitting that an architecture student live in a home rich in history and character, right? Wrong! Thats a mere pipe dream for most young adults. Dylan Tibbetts of Eugene, OR, however, got extremely lucky. Three years ago, one of his classmates happened to be moving out of this vintage apartment near campus right as Dylan was leaving dorm life behind. Much to his astonishment, Dylan had landed the apartment hed always wanted much sooner than he ever thought possible.

Hexagonal bathroom tiles, ornamental casework and leaded glass are just a few of the spaces early-20th-century details. And each is further amplified by Dylans distinct style, a look thats a little sentimental and a lot vintage. A handsome Steelcase desk, for example, graces his home office and pennants from Dylans favorite destinations tie a bow on the bedrooms design. If that werent enough, his kitchen gets a personal touch thanks to a dining table hes lovingly cobbled together with a basic pine topper and $10 base.

Without a doubt, outfitting the space was easy and enjoyable for decor enthusiast Dylan. Working with its unique layout, on the other hand, was much more challenging. Immobile radiators and half walls interrupt the apartments flow and presented Dylan with an odd task: create dedicated rooms within a pretty open space. Dylan isnt one to back down, though. EU Committee Rules Could Destroy The Internet As We Know It "IndyWatch Feed Survival"

A European Union committee has just approved rules that could destroy the internet as we know it. The two new and controversial rules change the dynamics of the internet and introduce wide-ranging new changes to the way the web works.

For starters, the rules, known as Article 11 and Article 13 could be used to ban memes. Article 13 has been criticized by campaigners who claim that it could force internet companies to ban all memes. It requires that all websites check posts against a database of copyrighted work, and remove those that are flagged. The reason many believe this could lead to a meme ban is that memes often use images taken from films or TV shows and could be removed by websites under article 13.  Its just a convenient and propagandized way of making censorship sound better, though.

According to The Independent, an open letter published last week was signed by more than 70 experts, including web creator Tim Berners-Lee, Wikipedia co-founder Jimmy Wales and internet pioneer Vint Cerf.By requiring Internet platforms to perform automatic filtering all of the content that their users upload, Article 13 takes an unprecedented step towards the transformation of the Internet, from an open platform for sharing and innovation, into a tool for the automated surveillance and control of its users, that letter read.

But it gets even worse. As if that isnt tyrannical and authoritarian enough, the EU made sure to add a tax with the creation of Article 11 this is just more evidence that authoritarians will do anything it takes to steal more money, so heres a tax on free speech. Article 11 introduces a link tax, requiring that internet companies get permission from publishers to use a snippet of their work. On websites like Google and Twitter, for instance, a small part of the article is usually shown before someone clicks into it entirely but under the new rule, those technology companies would have to get permission and perhaps even pay to use that excerpt....

Fluoridation: New York Times Drops a Clanger "IndyWatch Feed Health"

In a recent article the New York Times (NYT) made a very embarrassing mistake. Specifically, it cited a videotape that repeated a serious mistake on the toxicity of fluoride that was corrected 6 years ago.

The mistake made in the video was the claim that an important meta-analysis of 27 IQ studies carried out by a team from Harvard University (Choi et al., 2012) comparing the IQ between children from villages with high fluoride exposure and villages with low-exposure- reported an average loss of 0.45 of an IQ point. In reality, the Harvard researchers reported a loss of 0.45 of one standard deviation, which amounted to a loss of 7 IQ points. A huge difference. A loss of half an IQ point might be insignificant, but a loss of 7 IQ points would be very serious at the population level. Such a loss would more than halve the number of very bright children (IQ greater than 130) and increase by at least 50% the number of mentally handicapped (IQ less than 70).

Under any other circumstances this would be a very embarrassing mistake but on the matter of fluoridation the NYT is not embarrassed easily.  For example, in 2015 the senior science editor wrote an email in connection with fluoridation:

I understand that you disagree, but I think its fair to say
that most members of the science staff of The New York Times
consider this debate to have been decided in fluorides favor
about 50 years ago.

Donald McNeil Jr., Science Correspondent, New York Times
April 2, 2015 email. Subject: READERS MAIL
See copy of email at 4:35 minutes into Our Daily Dose

It is quite possible that Donald McNeils pro-fluoridation position here has something to do with the fact that his father wrote a history of water fluoridation that was decidedly pro-fluoridation (The Fight for Fluoridation, Donald McNeil, Oxford University Press, 1957). Be that as it may, McNeil should know that such a statement is preposterous. Science is never settled. This situation is what Thomas Huxley described as the great tragedy of science the slaying of a beautiful hypothesis by an ugly fact.

In the case of water fluoridation there are dozens of ugly facts that slay the hypothesis and the much repeated mantra that fluoridation is safe and effective.  These include 53 studies that associate a lowering of IQ with exposure to fluoride (...

Identification of curcumin derivatives as human LMTK3 inhibitors for breast cancer: a docking, dynamics, and MM/PBSA approach. "IndyWatch Feed Health"

PMID:  3 Biotech. 2018 May ;8(5):228. Epub 2018 Apr 27. PMID: 29719770 Abstract Title:  Identification of curcumin derivatives as human LMTK3 inhibitors for breast cancer: a docking, dynamics, and MM/PBSA approach. Abstract:  Human lemur tyrosine kinase-3 (LMTK3) is primarily involved in regulation of estrogen receptor- (ER) by phosphorylation activity. LMTK3 acts as key biomarker for ER positive breast cancer and identified as novel drug target for breast cancer. Due to the absence of experimental reports, the computational approach has been followed to screen LMTK3 inhibitors from natural product curcuminderivatives based on rational inhibitor design. The initial virtual screening and re-docking resulted in identification of top three leads with favorable binding energy and strong interactions in critical residues of ATP-binding cavity. ADME prediction confirmed the pharmacological activity of the leads with various properties. The stability and binding affinity of leads were well refined in dynamic system from 25 ns MD simulations. The behavior of protein motion towards closure of ATP-binding cavity was evaluated based on eigenvectors by PCA. In addition, MM/PBSA calculations also confirmedthe relative binding free energy of LMTK3-lead complexes in favor of the effective binding. From our study, novel LMTK3 inhibitors tetrahydrocurcumin, curcumin 4,4'-diacetate, and demethoxycurcumin have been proposed with inhibition mechanism. Further experimental evaluation on reported lead candidates might prove its role in breast cancer therapeutics.

Bitcoin: The Days of Future Past Explained "IndyWatch Feed Crypto"

The Wall Street Journal ran an op-ed yesterday examining the future of Bitcoin by drawing parallels to private currencies in the past in order to try and make sense of the current cryptocurrency market.

Everything Old is New Again

The piece begins with the statement that for most of its 10-year history, the digital currency bitcoin has been viewed by some people as the future of money. In order to put that into context the writer, Paul Vigna, explains that in 2009 when Bitcoin was launched, some people felt as if government-backed institutions were failing as the global financial crisis reached its apex.

Clearly when people have any insecurity about government plans, they flock to other assets, the article quotes Emin Gn Sirer, an associate professor of computer science at Cornell University and popular writer on cryptocurrency. By other assets, he means most readily gold. But, the article chronicles a time when it was quite common for private banks to issue their own scrip or currency.

In the pre-civil war days of the US when the country was expanding rapidly and the federal government was weak all manner of companies and corporations issued money. This, the article points out, led to logistical problems as the currencies had no value outside of the region where they were issued and were also subject to fraud as there was no tally on how much scrip any bank or entity was issuing.

Here Vigna brings the comparison back to the current state of cryptocurrency and the future of Bitcoin. He points out that though Bitcoin is more or less the gold standard for cryptocurrencies, its $130 billion market value now represents only about 40% of the overall cryptocurrency markets value, and with 1,600 digital coins trading today, 700 of which have appeared this year, conditions are ripe for confusion and fraud. He adds,

That proliferation has added to bitcoins already volatile nature, making it difficult to put a value on the currency that even approaches the stability of the dollar and the worlds other major currencies.

Crypto Must Create Utility

Marlene Dumass Metamorphoses "IndyWatch Feed Literature"

Marlene Dumas, from Myths and Mortals.

In bed some nights, too tired to read, I lie on my side with my phone plugged into the wall and scroll through Instagram. Lately, perhaps because of the algorithms, process videos of illustrators painting have risen to the top of my feed. My favorites are the ones where the artist begins without a drawing, the canvas blank as a sheet; I like the mystery of the movement of the brush, following its slow dance across the paper. After thirty seconds, a minute, the strokes come together, and on the glowing screen, an image rises up, like an omen out of water. A face, a flower, a still life. I could watch them all night and often do, mesmerized by the startling process of creation.

The drawings at the center of Marlene Dumass current show at the David Zwirner gallery, Myths and Mortals, take their subject from Shakespeares poem Venus and Adonis. That poem is itself a retelling of Ovids Venus and Adonis, which is itself one iteration of a classic myth told around fires long before Ovid wrote it down. In this story, Venus, the goddess of love, has helplessly fallen for a young mortal hunter, Adonis. How impossible that the goddess of love could be a victim of love herselfand yet. Pricked by Cupids bow, she succumbs. Overcome by passion, desire courses through her body, making her cheeks pale and the sweat stand out on her brow.

A UK Exchange Is Launching Litecoin Futures Trading "IndyWatch Feed Crypto"

U.K.-based cryptocurrency futures trading platform Crypto Facilities is launching a litecoin derivative product. According to a statement on Wednesday, the new U.S. Dollar denominated services will go live on Friday, June 22, and will allow investors to long or short futures contracts that have litecoin as the underlying collateral, with a weekly, monthly and quarterly maturities. Timo Schlaefer, Chief executive officer of Crypto Facilities, said the decision is the result of obtaining a strong customer demand for literate contracts. We believe our LTC dollar futures contracts will increase price transparency, liquidity and efficiency in the cryptocurrency markets, he said. Litecoin creator Charlie Lee commented in the announcement that, by opening Litecoin trading to more institutional investors, the new product will increase the liquidity of cryptocurrency and make it simpler for individuals to get in and out of litecoin.

The move comes just a month after the company launched ethereum based futures contracts and marks a brand new addition to several crypto based derivative products which are already being traded on the platform, including bitcoin and XRP, the native token of the Ripple protocol. In an e-mail answer, Crypto Facilities told CoinDesk that the company is anticipating the trading volume of its ethereum futures contracts to reach around $150 million in this quarter, accounting for around 10 percent of the platforms total. Bitcoin Retains Short-Term Bull Bias Despite Exchange Hack "IndyWatch Feed Crypto"

Bitcoin (BTC) suffered a minor dip last night after it was revealed that hackers had breached a significant cryptocurrency market, but the charts still prefer a corrective rally to $7,000.
The cryptocurrency dropped from $6,740 to $6,560 after Bithumb the 6th largest cryptocurrency market in the world by trading quantity confirmed that the assault had occurred between late Tuesday night and early Wednesday morning local time, adding that about $32 million-worth of cryptocurrencies had been stolen.
The Seoul-based cryptocurrency market has halted all deposit and withdrawal support so as to ensure security and announced that it would fully compensate customers.
Until the hack highlights the security risks that have plagued the cryptocurrency area and has potential to dent investor sentiment, bitcoin is so far refusing to adopt the negative storyline.
At press time, the cryptocurrency is changing hands at $6,630 on Bitfinex down just 1 per cent in the last twenty four hours and holding well over the Asian session low of $6,560.
BTCs resilience has ensured the technical charts are retaining short-term bullish bias, and is trading above the aid of the 50-candle moving average (MA) on the 4-hour graph, now at $6,545.
4-hour graph

The graph shows a rounding bottom a bullish reversal pattern meaning sentiment has progressively shifted from bearish to bullish over the last 10 days. The relative strength index (RSI) can also be holding over 50.00 (in bullish territory).
BTC also recently witnessed a bullish Bollinger Band breakout, as discussed yesterday.
Therefore, the short-term outlook remains optimistic and only a break beneath the ascending trendline (dotted yellow line) would weaken the bull case.
Daily graph

As seen above, the bullish crossover between the 5-day and 10-day MA further suggests a short-term bearish-to-bullish trend change.

BTC stays on the hunt for $7,024 (23.6 percent Fibonacci retracement of the fall from $9,990 to $6,108).
A daily close (as per UTC) over that level would open the doors to $7,500$7,600, although the rally might be short lived as the long-run technicals are still biased to the bears.
A break below $6,510 (rising trendline support, as seen in the 4-hour graph ) would abort the short-term bullish view.
A daily close below $6,000 would probably reestablish the bear market and could yield a fall toward $5,000.
