Dogs love frolicking in the surf, but theres a danger lurking in the ocean that Chris Taylor knows about all too well. His 7-year-old labrador retriever named O.G. died after spending a day at the beach near Tampa, Florida. Just hours after they left the beach, O.G. came down with severe stomach problems. The next day, he was lethargic and became increasingly disoriented. He started to not acknowledge who I was, said Taylor. He just walked into the corner and stared blankly.

New Venomous Snake Discovered Is Already At Risk For Extinction "IndyWatch Feed Survival"

A team of biologists happened to stumble across a new venomous snake while on a mission to research sea snakes. But the scary new snake they discovered just happens to already be at risk for extinction.

The new snake was found in Australia by a research team of biologists which is led by University of Queenslands Associate Professor Bryan Fry. The new species of bandy-bandy snake was found at Weipa, a town on the west coast of the Cape York Peninsula, in the far northeast of Australia, according to Fox News.

Fry said bandy-bandies were burrowing snakes so they were surprised when they found it on a concrete block by the sea, after coming in from a night of sea snake spotting. We later discovered that the snake had slithered over from a pile of bauxite rubble waiting to be loaded onto a ship, he said.

The black-and-white snake is now named Vermicella parscauda or the Cape York bandy-bandy. The bandy-bandies typically live in burrows and feed on a specialized diet of blind snakes.  So far, scientists actually only know of five species of bandy bandies, all found in Australia. The hoop snake (Vermicella annulata) is the most commonly encountered bandy-bandy, the researchers reported in a study published in Zootaxa.

The team has so far found only six individual snakes of the Cape York bandy-bandy species in the Weipa area. This site has large-scale bauxite mining that involves extensive digging, which could be affecting the naturally burrowing bandy-bandy, the researchers write.  The team is yet to do a detailed assessment of the abundance, distribution and potential threats to the species, but say the bauxite mine, and the activity around it, could endanger or present the threat of this snakes extinction.

Bauxite mining is a major economic activity in the region, and it may be reshaping the environment to the detriment of native plants and animals,...

Blockchain Startup Launches Platform for Risk-Managed ICO Investments "IndyWatch Feed Crypto"

CoinMirror, a Berlin based startup, is launch the public beta of its platform for ICO investments on the Ethereum mainnet today, July 18, 2018. The platform seeks to provide investment opportunities to investors regardless of accessible capital. Discussing with Bitcoin Magazine, CoinMirror co creator Sebastian Hoffmann statedWe came up with CoinMirror to democratize investment by providing accessibility and education. We would like to break down investment barriers and give power back to the public. Were excited to start our solution and contribute to the brand new community, and eventually help to hasten the healthful evolution of the ecosystem. , ICOs have revolutionized fund-raising process internationally, but its also produced a wide range of problems for the typical investor.

From the minimum investment thresholds to the lack of due diligence necessary to make good investment decisions, a barrier to responsible entry could be substantial for people without much start-up capital or investment know the way. The experienced investor has frequently had the upper hand here, but CoinMirror may make it easy for the ordinary investor to play catch up soon. Built on Ethereum, the CoinMirror system allows its users to reflect the movements of experienced investors without needing to perform extensive DD or code reviews. The platform wants its users to recognize and copy the movements of ICO investors with an established history.

Therefore, When the Syndicate Leader, a private or public syndicate, invests a certain proportion of their funds within an ICO, the consumers funds backing them will be deployed in like manner. After the user backs the Syndicate Leader, the system automates the rest. Public Syndicates are publicly listed on the stage for users to navigate and then back them up with funds. Personal Syndicates, and on the other hand, arent listed publicly. Users need the specific URL to access the Syndicates page on the stage. CoinMirror believes that their stage is a win for both retail investors and Syndicates. Dan Desa, head of business development at CoinMirror, stated platform provides retail users an opportunity to avoid extensive due diligence procedures while accessing deals with minimal investment thresholds.

Syndicate Leaders, and on the other hand, are going to be able to negotiate better deals with a larger capital pool, build their profiles as savvy ICO financiers and earn a portion of the realized bonus tokens, in addition to the typical Syndicate fee. Becoming a Syndicate on the stage may not be as easy as it sounds. The companys FAQ page says that any individual or organization, can produce a Personal Syndicate, but Public Syndicates have to experience a KYC/AML test before being manually authorized to connect the stage. For the time being at least, the stage does lack some vital features. Notably missing is a rating system for profiling extremel...

Blockchain Startup Launches Platform for Risk-Managed ICO Investments "IndyWatch Feed Crypto"

CoinMirror

CoinMirror, a Berlin-based startup, is launching the public beta of its platform for ICO investments on the Ethereum mainnet today, July 18, 2018. The platform seeks to provide investment opportunities to investors regardless of available capital.

Speaking with Bitcoin Magazine, CoinMirror co-founder Sebastian Hoffmann stated, We came up with CoinMirror to democratize investing by providing access and education. We want to break down investment barriers and give power back to the people. We are excited to launch our solution and contribute to the decentralized community, and ultimately help to accelerate the healthy evolution of the ecosystem.

ICOs have revolutionized the fundraising process globally, but it has also created a range of problems for the average investor. From minimum investment thresholds to the absence of due diligence (DD) needed to make sound investment decisions, the barrier to responsible entry can be substantial for those without much start-up capital or investment know-how. The experienced investor has often had the upper hand here, but CoinMirror might make it possible for the average investor to play catch up soon.

Built on Ethereum, the CoinMirror platform allows its users to "mirror the moves of experienced" investors (Syndicate Leaders) without the "need to perform extensive DD or code reviews." The platform wants its users to identify and copy the moves of ICO investors with a proven track record.

So, when a Syndicate Leader either Private or Public Syndicate invests a certain percentage of their funds in an ICO, the users' funds backing them will be deployed in like manner. Once the user backs the Syndicate Leader, the platform automates the rest.

Public Syndicates are publicly listed on the platform for users to browse and back them up with funds. Private Syndicates, on the other hand, are not listed publicly. Users need the exact URL to access the Syndicate's page on the platform.

CoinMirror believes that their platform is a win-win for both retail investors and Syndicates. Dan Desa, head of business development at CoinMirror, said the platform offers retail users the opportunity to avoid "extensive due diligence procedures" while accessing deals with "high minimum investment thresholds." Syndicate Leaders, on the other hand, will be able to "negotiate better deals" with a larger capi...

At least 11 wildfires are raging inside the Arctic Circle with a wide area of Europe a tinderbox as more than 60 fires are burning in Sweden "IndyWatch Feed Uncanny"

Photo thelocal.se
At least 11 wildfires are raging inside the Arctic Circle as the hot, dry summer turns an abnormally wide area of Europe into a tinderbox.
The worst affected country, Sweden, has called for emergency assistance from its partners in the European Union to help fight the blazes, which have broken out across a wide range of its territory and prompted the evacuations of four communities.
Tens of thousands of people have been warned to remain inside and close windows and vents to avoid smoke inhalation.
Rail services have been disrupted.
The Copernicus Earth observation programme, which gives daily updates of fires in Europe, shows more than 60 fires burning in Sweden.
In western Sweden, fire-fighting operations were temporarily halted near an artillery training range near lvdalen forest due to concerns that unexploded ordnance might be detonated by the extreme heat.
Residents in Uppsala said they could see the plumes of smoke and have been banned from barbecuing, after 18 consecutive days without rain.
This is definitely the worst year in recent times for forest fires.
Whilst we get them every year, 2018 is shaping up to be excessive, said Mike Peacock, a university researcher and local resident.
There have been huge fires in the past in Sweden, but not over such a wide area.
The sparks come from a variety of sources: BBQs, cigarettes and increasingly lightning, which is becoming more frequent as the planet warms.
Swedish authorities say the risk of more fires in the days ahead is extremely high due to temperatures forecast in excess of 30C.
The European Forest Fire Information System warned fire danger conditions were likely to be extreme across much of central and northern Europe in the coming weeks. EU officials said many of this years fires are outside the traditional European fire zone of the Mediterranean, and are increasingly taking place at unexpected times of year.
2017 was the worst fire year in Europes history, causing destruction to thousands of hectares of forest and cropland in Portugal, Spain and Italy, as late as November.
There are clear trends of longer fire seasons and frequent critical periods in Europe that are leading to dangerous fire situations, said a European commission official....

Trouble Ahead For The Housing Market "IndyWatch Feed Survival"

This report was originally published by Adam Taggart at PeakProsperity.com

Our good friend John Rubino over at DollarCollapse.com just released an analysis titled US Housing Bubble Enters Stage Two: Suddenly Motivated Sellers.

He reminds us that housing bubbles follow a predictable progression:

  • Stage One: Mania  Prices rise at an accelerating rate as factors like excess central bank liquidity/loose credit/hot foreign money drive a virtuous bidding cycle well above sustainably afforable levels.
  • Stage Two: Peak  Increasingly jittery owners attempt to sell out before the party ends. Supply jumps as prices stagnate.
  • Stage Three: Bust  As inventory builds, sellers start having to lower prices. This begins a vicious cycle: buyers go on strike not wanting to catch a falling knife, causing sellers to drop prices further.

Rubino cites recent statistics that may indicate the US national housing market is finally entering Stage Two after a rip-roaring decade of recovery since the bursting of the 2007 housing bubble:

  • the supply of homes for sale during the all important spring market rose at 3x last years rate
  • 30 of Americas 100 largest cities now have more inventory than they did a year ago, and
  • mortage applications for new homes dropped 9% YoY

Taken together, these suggest that residential housing supply is increasing as sales slow, exactly what youd expect to see in the transition from Stage One to Stage Two.

If thats indeed whats happening, Rubino warns the following comes next:

Stage Twos deluge of supply sets the table for US housing bubble Stage Three by soaking up the remaining demand and changing the tenor of the market. Deals get done at the asking price instead of way above, then at a little below, then a lot below. Instead of being snapped up the day theyre listed, houses begin to languish on the market for weeks, then months. Would-be sellers, who have already mentally cashed their monster peak-bubble-price checks, start to panic. They cut t......

Glenn Gould Is Always on Fast-Forward "IndyWatch Feed Literature"

Revisited is a series in which writers look back on a work of art they first encountered long ago. Here, Katharine Kilalea revisits Glenn Gould playing Bachs Partita No. 1 in B-Flat Major.

Glenn Gould in the studio in 1978

Driving home from the swimming pool one day, I listened to famous people on the radio describing themselves as either happy or unhappy. They preferred, on the whole, to say, I choose to be happy, which irritated me, so I switched to another station which was playing Bachs Partita No. 1 in B-Flat Major. The partitas giguemeaning jighad a kinetic energy about it. I danced with my head. It seemed, while listening to it, that everything was dancing. A cricket match was on in the local park and the Bach infected the game with its rhythm, giving the throwing and catching of the ball, the umpires gestures, and the batting an elegance and coordination.

My fingers drummed along on the steering wheel, or tried to, because Gould was playing, and Gould is always on fast-forward, his hands skipping so quickly over each other it was hard to say which was which. The outlines of the sounds were unclear, also, because despite having poured olive oil into my ears for several days, I had swimmers ear, which gave even the smallest noise an unrefined booming quality. Perhaps I could play this myself, I thought. Perhaps I could order the sheet music off Amazon. The piano would appreciate the company. It hadnt been touched since New Years Eve when a friends new boyfriendwho would commit suicide shortly aftersubjected us to a performance of Rachmaninov. It was odd, most people play Rachmaninov with feelingbecause Rachmaninov is full of feelingsbut he just played it very loud and very fast. Impressively fast, really, but hard on the ear.

In South Africa, on the highways, you drive so fast that theres not enough time to take control if something goes wrong. Some days...

3 Emergency Uses for Plastic Sheeting "IndyWatch Feed Health"

3 Emergency Uses for Plastic Sheeting

By Jeremiah Johnson

The focus in this article is on rolls of plastic sheeting, and why you need it in your emergency supplies. Plastic sheeting is a cheap and multipurpose prep that has many uses in a survival situation. It can be used for rainwater collection, making a solar still, waterproofing containers, and it can even be used in a worst-case scenario as a body bag.

The best type of sheeting to store is 6 to 8-mil thickness. This can provide you with a wide range of emergency uses. I found a good type for you, made by Frost King, labeled as Crystal Clear Vinyl Sheeting for those windows. I have a roll of 3 x 75 for use with most of my windows if I lose them. It is also greenhouse-grade plastic, although it doesnt have a UV rating. The best feature? It is 8 mil in thickness: thats good stuff.  It is also transparent, not translucent, so you can actually see through it.

I found a bug in V8s Exponentiation Operator "IndyWatch Feed Education"

Photo by Ritchie Valens on Unsplash

I always thought that the new ES6 exponentiation operator x ** y was the same as Math.pow(x,y).

Indeed this is what the specification says about Math.pow:

Return the result of Applying the ** operator with base and exponent as specified in 12.6.4.

12.6.4Applying the ** Operator states that the result is implementation-dependentbut there should still be no discrepancy between ** and Math.pow.

However, evaluating the following in the current V8 JS Engine (Chrome / Node) results in this:

console.log('1.35 ** 92', 1.35 ** 92) // 978828715394.7672
console.log('Math.pow(1.35, 92)', Math.pow(1.35, 92)) // 978828715394.767

The exponentiation operator ** returns a more accurate approximation.

But this is not the only weirdness with the exponentiation operator: Lets try evaluating the same with variables (REPL)it shouldnt make any difference:

featured
const exponent = 92;
console.log(`1.35 ** exponent`, 1.35 ** exponent) // 978828715394.767
console.log('1.35 ** 92', 1.35 ** 92) // 978828715394.7672
console.log(`Math.pow(1.35, exponent)`, Math.pow(1.35, exponent)) // 978828715394.767
console.log('Math.pow(1.35, 92)', Math.pow(1.35, 92)) // 978828715394.767

But it does: 1.35 ** 92 differs from 1.35 ** exponent.

So what seems to be happening here is that the compiler processes the JS code 1.35 ** 92 which is already constant folded

This makes sense as V8 really compiles to machine code.

V8 increases performance by compiling JavaScript to native machine code before executing it, versus executing bytecode or interpreting it.

V8 works by first interpreting the JS code with their Ignition Interpreter. It does a second run with the TurboFan compiler...

Why cant cats resist thinking inside the box? "IndyWatch Feed Health"

By Nicholas Dodman, Tufts University

Twitters been on fire with people amazed by cats that seem compelled to park themselves in squares of tape marked out on the floor. These felines appear powerless to resist the call of the #CatSquare.

This social media fascination is a variation on a question I heard over and over as a panelist on Animal Planets Americas Cutest Pets series. I was asked to watch video after video of cats climbing into cardboard boxes, suitcases, sinks, plastic storage bins, cupboards and even wide-necked flower vases.

Thats so cute but why do you think she does that? was always the question. It was as if each climbing or squeezing incident had a completely different explanation.

It did not. Its just a fact of life that cats like to squeeze into small spaces where they feel much safer and more secure. Instead of being exposed to the clamor and possible danger of wide open spaces, cats prefer to huddle in smaller, more clearly delineated areas.

Dirty mouth "IndyWatch Feed Food"

While watching the morning news (you know, the tidbits of news aired between direct-to-consumer drug ads), a commercial came on claiming that a new mouthwash kills 99.9% of all bacteria in the mouth, good-looking young people gazing at each other with inviting smiles.

Now why would you do that? Why would you wipe clean a bodily orifice that is meant to be teeming with microorganisms?

The human gastrointestinal tract, as well as the airway, vagina, skin, and other body parts, are all meant to be colonized with microorganisms. It represents an important symbiotic relationship: we support their health and they support ours. Imagine the same kind of attitude in wiping out oral flora was applied to the gastrointestinal tract and we took potent antibiotics to wipe it clean every day: Health is not supportedwe lose the intestinal healing, metabolic support, nutrients, mind and emotional effects that bowel flora provide, huge health benefits that shape human life. Even worse, after antibiotics wipe out bowel flora, various species recolonize the intestines, but often dominated by undesirable species, such as Enterobacteriaceae like E. coli, Shigella, Klebsiella, Clostridia strains, as well as fungi like Candida albicans and others that have major negative impacts on human health and lead, over time, to bloating, diarrhea, irritable bowel syndrome, fibromyalgia, diverticular disease, colon cancer and many other conditions.

Just as you are healthier with a healthy spectrum of bowel flora, so you have better oral health with a healthy spectrum of oral flora. Emerging insights into the oral microbiome demonstrate, for instance, that mouthwashes increase blood pressure by wiping out species that produce nitric oxide, a potent mediator of artery tone. Starches like grain amylopectin, like sucrose, promote tooth decay by encouraging cavity-causing bacterial species like Streptococcus mutans. Changes in oral flora even appear to increase risk for pancreatic cancer, perhaps by contributing to bod...

South Korea Plans Tax Perks for Blockchain Startups "IndyWatch Feed Crypto"

The South Korea government has announced a plan to revise the current taxation rules to widen benefits for businesses which concentrate on the evolution of nascent technology, like blockchain, as part of the nations push for innovation growth. Announced Wednesday, following a meeting of ministers from eight government agencies involved in economic policy, taxation rates must be reduced for employers dealing having a wide range of 157 new expansion technology in 11 areas, based on a report from CoinDesk Korea. Additionally, the ministers suggested to reduce the threshold of businesses for obtaining tax reduction benefits. Presently, so as to get a tax deduction, a company must allocate greater than 5% of the preceding years gross sales to R&D and 10% of its own R&D investment should concentrate on new expansion technology like blockchain.

Since a deficiency or absence of sales in a startups 1st year can make it hard for it to make an application for tax benefits, the ministers suggest the r&D investment demand should be shifted to over 5% of the current years gross sales. Nevertheless, the government hasnt disclosed how much the tax deduction could be, stating further details of the proposal will be announced on July 26, with the changes expected to take effect by the first quarter of 2019. The meeting is the second in one week on the exact same topic, that was also discussed by ministers last Friday.

A report from news agency Yonhap in time indicated that the new taxation rule would apply to some firm based in South Korean that concentrates on blockchain technology, whether theyre foreign or domestic companies. In related news, the South Koreas Ministry of Science and ICT lately announced it is planning to spend $9 million before the end of 2019 to support blockchain pilot applications in six pubic service areas. Dangerous Burn-Causing Giant Hogweed Plant Removed From Seattle Yard "IndyWatch Feed Survival"

A dangerous plant and noxious weed (known as the giant hogweed) has been found and removed from a Seattle, Washington yard. The giant hogweed is known for its sap which causes third-degree burns and blisters and if it gets in the eyes, can cause blindness.

King County noxious weed experts removed the dangerous giant hogweed plant from the yard Tuesday, according to a report from King 5. The plants stem was nearly an inch in diameter and the sap inside is highly poisonous. Giant hogweed is an invasive plant thats been brought over from Russia and it causes these horrible burns and blisters on your skin. Its a really nasty sap that makes your skin hypersensitive to sunlight, specialist Sasha Shaw said. Plus it makes a million seeds. We put them in the bag right here, but otherwise, it wouldve spread over this whole area.

Crews in the noxious weed program are highly focused on the giant hogweed because of the dangers it presents to humans.

How to spot the giant hogweed:

The large plants have hollow stems that are generally 2 to 4 inches in diameter, with dark purple and red raised spots and bristle-like hairs.

The flowering top of the plant has little white flowers in groups of 50-150 flower rays clustered into an umbrella-shaped flower up to 2.5 feet across.

Environmental officials say that extreme caution should be taken should you attempt to remove a giant hogweed. (And based on the information available about this invasive plant, removal is a good idea.)  They caution to NOT use a weed-whacker because the plants sap can splatter and then spread quickly. Eradication should be done by physical removal or using herbicides such as glyphosate or triclopyr,...

In New Delhi, A Calming Oasis for Two Expat Journalists "IndyWatch Feed Diy"

Anasuya Sanyal and Newley Purnell are two busy journalists Anasuya is a former TV reporter turned consultant, and Newley covers tech for the Wall Street Journal with bylines also appearing in the New Yorker and the New York Times so their workdays can become hectic, to say the least. The most recent season of their life saw them move from Singapore to the neighborhood of New Friends Colony in New Delhi, India, a transition which greatly excited the couple for two reasons. The first of which meant they could trade apartment living for a real home with a garden (and more space for their dog Ginger to roam), and the second of which planted the couple in a country that bears Anasuyas heritage, who is of Indian descent but was born and raised in the US.

Their new home came recommended by friends who were leaving Delhi, and while it isnt a typical expat neighborhood, the landlords of their 1,200-square-foot place were very accommodating to the couple. An older townhouse-type home, the rental had great character and room to express Anasuya and Newleys love for vintage items they just needed someone to help them put it all together. They enlisted interior designer Shivani Dogra, and launched a collaborative design process that took about two-and-a-half months. After we briefed [Shivani] and approved the initial drawings, we gave her a relatively free hand,...

Investor Buy Signal to Make a Killing is the Next Bitcoin Death "IndyWatch Feed Crypto"

An investment analyst has predicted the death of Bitcoin articles will show the key moment to invest in Bitcoin. Following the bubble popping over the last year, the analyst claims that this will be the buy signal for him and others to invest.

No Such Thing as Bad Press

Bitcoin has died countless times according to the media. 99Bitcoins puts the figure at 306 deaths with quotes from each publication that has called it over for the digital currency. These articles often occur after temporary market crashes, including the Mount Gox hack where Bitcoin died at $658 according to articles such as Bitcoin is Dead by the Weekly Standard.

In the article, Jonathan Last said: The speculators may not realize it yet, but you can stick a fork in bitcoin. Its done.

Now, CEO of stocks and investment website ADVFN, Clem Chambers, has claimed that these death reports are excellent buy signals for investors. He said that investors can make a killing if they buy at the bottom, in a similar way to those who invested following the dotcom bubble. Chambers said:

I want to see headlines saying Bitcoin is dead after a final leg down. This will signal a bottom as it has on many previous occasions. The Death of Bitcoin as a MSM headline will be the point I will be serious about loading up.

Bitcoin is dead searches on Google hit an all-time high this year between February 4 and February 10 when the price of Bitcoin dropped to $6,048. Thats almost ten times higher than when Bitcoin died in 2014. Bitcoin has fallen to around this price an additional two times this year but searches have remained low.

Fundraising Campaign for the Weston A. Price Foundation "IndyWatch Feed Food"

JULY 16 AUGUST 31, 2018

July 2018

Dear Friends of the Weston A. Price Foundation,

Its time for our annual fundraising campaign, and we dont think the Foundation has ever been busier. Here are some of the efforts that we are currently involved in:

SOY HEART HEALTH CLAIM: This case is warming up again, thanks to the efforts of WAPF general counsel Jim Turner. After a recent favorable ruling to allow the case to go forward, we are getting ready to present our evidence on the toxicity of soy. The industry now wants a qualified health claim, not only for soy protein but also for soybean oil. We are preparing expert evidence for our case. But legal fees and expert witnesses dont come freeit will be quite an investment to see this case to the finish.

A CAMPAIGN FOR REAL MILK: We are focusing on Louisiana and New Jersey this year in our campaign to have raw milk legalized in the last seven states. Pete Kennedy is directing this campaign for us and is also on call to provide information to members about state laws, regulations and policies including food freedom legislation and issues regarding consumer access to raw milk, cottage foods and on-farm meat and poultry processingall areas in which he has had considerable experience.

Research into the fat-soluble vitaminS: Dr. Martin Grootvelt in the UK will be continuing his research throughout the year. Working with board member Sylvia Onusic, PhD, Dr. Grootvelt will also be analyzing various soybean oil products to help fight a qualified health claim for soybean oil.

WAPF Overseas: Finances permitting, we will continue to send members overseas to share the WAPF message. We are looking into a trip to the Philippines.

RAW BUTTER PETITION: We are supporting a petition to allow the sale of raw butter across state lines. Our general counsel Jim Turner will be spearheading this effort.

VACCINATIONS UPDATE: We provide funds for two consultants to prepare Action Alerts tailored to individual states. As an organization, we keep very thorough tabs on vaccination legislation.

General Education: Your donation helps support our day-to-day activities, including our lively quarterly journal, print materials, website updates, the Wise Traditions podcast, the Nourishing Our Children educational initiative, dozens of exhibits throughout the country and extensive local chapter activities worldwide.

While WAPF is a membership-based organization, our affordable membership fees do not cover our many activities, all of which are geared to teaching our dietary principles and making nutrient-dense food available worldwide to people from all walks of life.

Every Member of Your Prepper Group MUST Have This When It Hits The Fan "IndyWatch Feed Survival"

This report was originally published by Jeremiah Johnson at Tess Penningtons ReadyNutrition.com.

Tess is the author of The Preppers Blueprint: How To Survive ANY Disaster.

I wrote several articles in the past about the importance of maintaining good first-aid treatment capabilities when youre out in the woods, as well as in the home. I also mentioned the need for training and suggested several ways to go about receiving it to better prepare you and your family. That being said, your situation is your own: you may not have the time to do such training, although it is a priority.

In a related article, we discussed the importance of prepping trauma packs in detail:

Having these items pre-packaged cuts down on response time, and gives the responders more of an advantage in properly caring for the wounded

Medical first response packs can be made ahead of time using most of the medical products that you have on hand. In fact, these first response packs are not limited to medical emergencies, they can also be used for dental emergencies as well. To prepare for a SHTF scenario, it would be beneficial to take into account the most likely medical situations you may come in contact with and plan accordingly.

In the meantime, you can stock up on some supplies that will help you and perhaps fill in the gaps when you dont have the time to train. As Ive covered the topic extensively, this is not the scope of this article. Youve all heard of quick clot, the substance used to stop bleeding and aid you in bandaging up wou...

Organized Chaos: An Interview with Jeff VanderMeer "IndyWatch Feed Literature"

Jeff VanderMeer is the New York Times best-selling author of more than twenty-five books over a thirty-year career, including the best-selling Annihilation. He has won the Nebula Award, the Shirley Jackson Award, and the World Fantasy Award (three times) and has been a finalist for the Hugo Award. His highly imaginative guide to what he calls imaginative fiction, Wonderbook, features diagrams, maps, and renderings by the illustrator Jeremy Zerfoss that break down the mechanisms of creativity without losing any of its verve. It includes sidebars and essays by George R.R. Martin, Lev Grossman, Neil Gaiman, Michael Moorcock, Karen Joy Fowler, and many more. First published in 2013, the recently released expanded edition contains an additional fifty pages of material, including a section on ecology and fiction as well as on the process of bringing Annihalition to the big screen. VanderMeer spoke about the project with one of its contributors, Nnedi Okoraforan award-winning novelist of African-based science fiction, fantasy, and magical realism for both children and adults. I dont actually remember how I came to know Nnedi, VanderMeer says. It feels like Ive known her forever, even though its only from 2011 or so, I believe. I have always loved her affinity for owls and other creatures.

The Story of a Professional Delusion: Do Psychiatrists Believe Their Own Words? "IndyWatch Feed Health"

On February 24th of this year, a conference was held in Sydney, Australia which featured a number of prestigious local and overseas speakers as well as former psychiatric patients. Titled Mental Health in Crisis, it was intended to provide a forum for well-researched alternative views on the state of modern psychiatry. The next week, most of the speakers went to New Zealand for further seminars in five cities. During that week, a newspaper published an article quoting Prof. Peter Gotzsche, director of the Nordic Cochrane Centre in Copenhagen, whose research showed that antidepressants are a dangerous and relatively ineffective class of drugs, and who recommended they should be severely restricted. In his view, general practitioners should not be authorised to initiate them, and they should not be given to children or adolescents. On March 9th, the Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Psychiatrists (RANZCP) issued a press statement strongly criticising the article. In particular, it stated:

The prescription of antidepressant or antipsychotic medications is something that a psychiatrist only ever does in partnership with the patient and after due consideration of the risks and benefits (emphasis added).

As described on MIA, I lodged a lengthy complaint with the RANZCP, alleging that, as the responsible officials, the president and board had breached their own code of ethics at a number of points; in particular, the claim about prescribing habits was patently false. This has gone back and forth and, predictably, my complaints have been dismissed. On June 29th, the incoming president of the college wrote to me:

The (original press) statement also acknowledges the careful consideration given when prescribing medications.

That is, he essentially repeats the false claim that drugs are only ever prescribed after a friendly discussion between the caring doc and the grateful patient. Some months ago, I published the results of a pilot study on my 176 active files, which showed that psychiatrists hardly ever give information to patients regarding the risks of their drugs (I would have thought that any psychiatrist who was still breathing would know this: patients are routinely thrown to the ground and jabbed despite their furious objections or tearful pleading. Part of his defence was that psychiatrists have good intentions).

This reminds me of another rather fractious interchange I h...

Bitcoin Mining Firms Make Chinese Unicorns List for First Time "IndyWatch Feed Crypto"

Three bitcoin mining companies have combined a list of unicorns personal businesses valued at over $1 billion for the first time. The Shanghai based Hurun Research Institute released Its Q2 Unicorn Index for the Greater China area on Wednesday, which notably included the names of many Major bitcoin mining companies: Bitmain, Creative Canaan and Ebang. The next Hurun list of 130 Chinese unicorns has never before featured a completely cryptocurrency concentrated company. Ranking highest of the 3, Bitmain appears at thirteenth on the list with a valuation of around 70 billion yuan, or about $10.4 billion, close to other notable companies like JD Logistics.

The ranking follows news indicating that Bitmain has finished a Series B round financing that could value the company around $10 billion ahead of a potential initial public offering. In the mean time, Harun estimates Canaan and Ebang at about $3 billion and $1.5 billion, correspondingly The figures that saw the companies placed at the 32nd and 53rd on the listing, too respectively. Recent reports have suggested That Canaan and Ebang also have filed applications to go public on the Hong Kong Stock Exchange.

However, because The IPO programs were in first draft form, its unclear how much the 2 were seeking to increase or what their valuations may be. Based on a prior report from Reuters, in mid-2017, Canaan was estimated to be worth around $500 million. Whilst the 3 are the first completely Devoted bitcoin companies to appear on the Greater China Unicorn Index, a few of the businesses already on the list have already made major moves in the blockchain industry. For example, Ant Financial a payment affiliate of Alibaba that tops the list with a valuation of $149 billion declared late last month that its established a blockchain powered payment hallway between Hong Kong and the Philippines.

Further, OneConnect a fintech development arm of Chinese insurance giant PingAn and valued at $7.4 billion has aided the Hong Kong Monetary Authority engineer a blockchain trade finance platform thats set to go live by September. Fluoride question will be on November ballot in Brooksville "IndyWatch Feed Health"

BROOKSVILLE Brooksville residents will decide in November whether the city will continue adding fluoride to their water supply, the City Council voted this week.

The Council voted 3-2 to put the question to a vote after Mayor Betty Erhard questioned the expense of fluoridation and whether residents should be exposed to the substance without their approval.

The topic, highly controversial before in Brooksville, was pushed to a referendum by vice mayor Robert Battista. He was concerned that a council-level debate would distract from the important job of setting the citys budget for the next fiscal year.

Council member William Kemerer did not favor putting the item on the ballot, saying it was the councils job to make such decisions and that he had heard no public outcry to remove fluoride from the drinking water.

In fact, citizens speaking at Mondays meeting were dental professionals singing the praises of fluoridation and its proven public health benefits against tooth decay.

Council member Joe Bernardini, who sat through the last fluoride debate, said he agreed with Kemerer. Newly-appointed council member Brent Young said he saw plenty of fluoride discussion on social media and thought a referendum would resolve the issue.

The council voted to add Young to the council Monday to complete the term of Natalie Kahler, who left her council seat to run for the Hernando County Commission.

Young, a life-long Brooksville resident who works for an engineering company that contracts with Duke Energy, was one of two applicants for the short-term council job. The term ends in December after a new council member is elected.

The other applicant was John Basarab, a former teacher at Nature Coast High School, who buys and fixes up homes.

Fluoridation is Mass Medication, NZ Supreme Court Rules "IndyWatch Feed Health"

Below is a press release from Fluoride Free New Zealand on the NZ Supreme Courts recent ruling on fluoridation of the public water supply:

Fluoridation is Mass Medication, New Zealand Supreme Court Rules

Water fluoridation is compulsory mass medication, in breach of human rights, the Supreme Court has ruled by a majority vote. It confirmed that fluoridation is a medical treatment as claimed by opponents for over 60 years. It is not a supplement just topping up natural levels, as claimed by the Ministry of Health.

The impracticality of avoiding fluoridated water makes it compulsory in practice, the majority also ruled.

Three judges held that there was conflicting scientific evidence, confirming that the science is NOT settled.

Chief Justice Sian Elias then held that fluoridation was not prescribed by law (i.e. is unlawful), applying section 6 of the Bill of Rights Act. That was the correct decision in Fluoride Free NZs view.

The rest of the majority held that it was prescribed by law, and it was then necessary to apply a balancing test to determine if the breach of the right not to be subject to medical treatment without consent was justified in the case of fluoridation.

Justice Glazebrook held that it was for a local authority to do this when making its decision, potentially taking into account specific local circumstances.

On the balance of information before the Court the misinformation promulgated by promoters that water fluoridation measurably reduces tooth decay and presents no real health risk two judges held that it was justifiable. This is despite the court reiterating that it is now accepted that benefit for fluoride is from topical application, not from ingestion.

The Court did not consider information published since the original High Court case, and the recent US Government multi-million-dollar study by Bashash et al, published in Environmental Health Perspectives, carried out by top scientists and researchers in top North American universities had not yet been published. This study found that children exposed to fluoride at the same levels as New Zealanders had significantly reduced IQ, which could easily have shifted the Justices perception of safety.

Importantly, the Court held that this question of whether fluoridation is justifiable is to be determined on the balance of probabilities. There is no requirement for absolute proof of harm, as long-maintained by the Ministry of Health. As a question of fact, the two judges...

Additional Information on New Zealand Supreme Court Ruling "IndyWatch Feed Health"

Some of our readers were puzzled yesterday by FAN NZ broadcasting the Supreme Court verdict on fluoridation as a victory rather than a defeat. After all the Supreme court ruled against the plaintiffs (New Health New Zealand) in their efforts to prevent South Taranaki from fluoridating its water.

Let me explain, in my view, this is a classic case of losing a battle but winning the war.

In this case, the war is over the ethics of fluoridation. For opponents of fluoridation, this practice violates the individuals right to medical or human treatment. For proponents the counter-argument has been that fluoride is not a medicine and fluoridation is not a medical treatment. Proponents further argue that even if fluoride was a medicine people are not forced to drink the fluoridated water.

In the following two paragraphs (99 and 100) in the Supreme court ruling it is clear that the judges side with opponents on this matter and this finding will have huge ramifications worldwide. In other words it is a huge victory for us. Meanwhile, proponents will celebrate their local victory.

[99]

Applying this approach, we find that fluoridation of drinking water is the provision of medical treatment. It involves the provision of a pharmacologically active substance for the purpose of treating those who ingest it for dental decay. We agree with the Courts below that people who live or work in areas where fluoridation occurs have no practical option but to ingest the fluoride added to the water. So

the treatment is compulsory. While drinking water from a tap is not an activity that would normally be classified as undergoing medical treatment, we do not consider that ingesting fluoride added to water can be said to be qualitatively different from ingesting a fluoride tablet provided by a health practitioner.

[100]

We conclude that fluoridation of drinking water requires those drinking the water to undergo medical treatment in circumstances where they are unable to refuse to do so. Subject to s5, therefore, s11 of the Bill of Rights Act is engaged.

To see how that local victory was won you will have to read the paragraphs 101 144 in the ruling. But basically, they argue that the individual right to informed consent to medication (section 11 of the NZ Bill or Rights) may in certain circumstances be over-ridden by the interests of the larger community (see section 5). However, the judges somewhat undermined these arguments by ea...

Epitaph for a Slain War-Horse "IndyWatch Feed Literature"

Anthologia Palatina 7.208 = Anyte of Tegea (fl. 3rd cent. BCE)

This tomb Damis set up for his horse,
Staunch in battle, who perished when Ares
The murderous pierced his breast.  Black blood
Seethed through his skin as thick as bulls hide
In his bitter death-throes he soaked the earth.

Dr. Arvid Carlsson, Nobel Prize Winner and Fluoridation Opponent, has Died at 95 "IndyWatch Feed Health"

We have very sad news to report.

We heard yesterday that Arvid Carlsson has passed away at the age of 95. This Swedish Nobel laureate led the successful fight against fluoridation in his country in the 1970s and kindly offered his support to the Fluoride Action Network in its efforts to bring solid science to this debate.

In 1978, he gave a prophetic warning that the babys developing tissues, including the brain, might be affected in infants fed formula made with fluoridated water.

The world had to wait over a dozen years before human, animal and cellular studies began to be published on fluorides toxic harm to the brain. There are now 53 IQ studies reporting an association of fluoride exposure and lower IQ in in children. In 2017 the landmark Bashash et al. study reported neurocognitive harm to the fetus from the mothers fluoride levels which would be similar to the levels in adults in fluoridated communities.

In a 2005 interview, Dr. Arvid Carlsson noted that fluoridation is against all modern principles of pharmacology. Its obsolete. I dont think anybody in Sweden, not a single dentist, would bring up this question anymore.

5 Altcoins to Look Out For this Summer: NAGA, LTC, EOS, NEO and ADA "IndyWatch Feed Crypto"

After a prolonged crypto winter, the dog days of the altcoin summer are finally here which means you might want to watch these five cryptocurrencies carefully.

NAGA COIN (NGC)

First on the list of cryptos to look out for this summer is NAGA COIN (NGC).

NAGA COIN is the token which powers the expansive and all-encompassing NAGA ecosystem which itself includes the likes of NAGA TRADER, NAGA WALLET, and NAGA VIRTUAL. By that, we mean it is the decentralized utility token used for both trading and investing in financial markets, virtual goods, and other cryptocurrencies.

NGCs strength lies in its utility. Everything that happens in NAGAs ecosystem revolves around NGC as the token may be used to pay fees, act as collateral, and serve as the primary currency for all transactions. Recently, NAGA introduced its ICO-Hub, a NAGA WALLET feature that lets users participate in the hottest and most exciting coin offerings with just a few simple clicks, using NGC as the direct payment method. This makes NGC the main driver of the platforms sustainable economy in which demand is ever-increasing as more users, game publishers, and big-money financial institutions discover the many benefits the NAGA Ecosystem has to offer.

For traders, NAGA COIN like many altcoins is down substantially from its all-time highs. With such real utility and a diverse ecosystem backing the coin, however, this is certainly one token worth seriously considering before the next altcoin cycle.

Litecoin (LTC)

On the subject of being down substantially from all-time highs, Litecoin often called Bitcoins little brother is currently trading at what many may consider to be a substantial discount.

TMT Blockchain Funds Gabriel Francisco, for example, believes Litecoin will become one of the first cryptocurrencies to actually gain mainstream adoption for shoppers while also claiming the risk-reward ratio is very high. He noted:

Poised on the brink of greatness, Litecoin is preparing for a breathtaking moon shot. Dubbed th...

Water SOS to corporates "IndyWatch Feed Health"

Patna: Bihar State Pollution Control Board chairman A.K. Ghosh on Tuesday said a corporate-government approach will be more effective in dealing with waterborne diseases here, stressing that it was their social responsibility.

Ghosh said companies which manufacture water-purification devices should work for mass water-purification solutions as part of corporate social responsibility, going beyond the limited use of filtration technology at homes and offices.

Ghosh, who is also chairman of the State Environmental Impact Assessment Authority, Bihar, said: According to government studies, arsenic, fluoride and iron levels in groundwater and surface water is very high in certain parts of the state. So far as solution is concerned, corporate companies should also work in community filtration technology, acting as a catalyst to reduce impacts of water pollution on health.

He was speaking at a health and hygiene meet organised by a multinational electronics company here. Deputy chief minister Sushil Kumar Modi reiterated state governments efforts, saying: The government incurs a huge expenditure to address water contamination in parts of the state every year as the problem affects a sizeable population.

Echoing Ghoshs appeal for corporate efforts, he added: Prevalence of waterborne diseases because of water pollution has emerged as a big challenge in Bihar, making efforts from both sides (government and corporate) necessary.

Ghosh elaborated the high levels of water contaminants, responsible for many diseases. Our studies reveal arsenic in levels some parts of the state as 1,900 milligram per meter. The standard should not exceed 10mg per meter, he added.

Germany established their colony of German South West Africa (Deutsch-Sdwestafrika, now Namibia) in 1884, as part of its late attempt to become a colonial power to rival the United Kingdom. The soldiers deployed to protect German interests t here were the Kaiserliche Schutztruppen, and they were few in number and armed with a variety of rifles. Most had Mauser 1871 Jager rifles, single shot black powder arms. The best off, however, were outfitted with new Mauser 98 rifles when the German military adopted the G98. A special batch was made for these colonial troops, with a few distinctive features a bent bolt handle and sights calibrated down to 200m. And yes they were used by troops mounted on camels!

When World War One broke out, the fighting in Namibia ended fairly quickly, with the German forces soundly defeated by South Africans under General Jan Smuts in the summer of 1915. Fighting in the other German colonies (especially German East Africa, now Tanzania) would last much longer.

A slight correct to the video: 10,000 of these rifles were actually in German South West Africa by 1908, but 8,000 of them were destroyed by the German forces prior to surrendering in 1915. The German armed force was small, but extra troops had been deployed to the area in response to the Herero Wars in 1904, and they left their rifles behind when they returned to Germany afterwards.

Oberon becomes one of the last NSW towns to fluoridate its water "IndyWatch Feed Health"

One of the last remaining towns in New South Wales without fluoridation has decided to add it to its drinking water.

The Oberon Council on the states central tablelands has voted five-to-three to add fluoride to the towns supply after several months of heated debate and campaigning.

It is one of eight local governments in NSW, out of more than 100 local councils in the state, that has been asked to consider fluoridation by Health Minister Brad Hazzard.

Oberon resident, Jenn Capel, said she was thrilled with the decision.

I think its an excellent result, Ms Capel said.

Its the people in the community who dont have that [oral] care, who dont have the dedication to teeth, theyre the ones who are going to suffer and the long-term effects are overwhelming.

The Oberon Council last discussed fluoridation in 2014 and resolved not to proceed.

Its taken a long time, Oberon resident Tina Slattery said.

The last time it went up the community didnt really appreciate what was going on, and so it could have been taken over by a very persuasive, small group.

The debate at Tuesdays council meeting sparked anger among those who opposed fluoridation, with several speakers claiming it would be a form of mass medication and could jeopardise peoples health.

Im mortified, I think theyve gone against the wishes of Oberon, mother-of-five Tracey Watson said.

My concern is that the pro people didnt really show any documented evidence, whereas the people against always did.

Sarah Raphael from the Australian Dental Association New South Wales made a presentation at the council meeting and quoted the 2007 Child Dental Survey.

It clearly showed more than double the amount of dental decay in the children of Oberon compared with Orange and Dubbo which have water fluoridation and have done for quite some time, Dr Raphael said.

The overwhelming evidence backs that water fluoridation is the most safe and equitable way to protect against dental decay in the community.

Anti-fluoride campaigner Veronika Cvitanovic has lived in Oberon for eight years.

She said she surveyed 684 people and 70 per cent were against fluoridation.

To me its clear that the council is not representing the communitys wishes, Ms Cvitanovic said...
