Usually it is a woman who asks the question always the same question. She sits near the door in the last row of the auditorium, where I have spent the last hour talking about what it means to have been kidnapped and raped by a man I loved, a man with whom I lived, a man who even before the kidnapping had already violated me in every way you might imagine, especially if you were a man like him. Someone else in the audience asks what happened to the man who did this to me and I explain how he got away, how he is a fugitive living in Venezuela, raising a new family. This is not the ending anyone expects.
Now the woman has a question. She raises her hand and when I call on her, always last, she stands and speaks in a clear, assertive voice: What do you want to have happen to him, to the man who did this to you? By this I know she means not only the actual crime the man committed but also all of the therapy, the nightmares and panic attacks, the prescribed medication and self-medication, the healing and self-harm. I mean, you probably want him dead, right?
No, I think. No, I say out loud. Her expression crumples; she looks confused. Everyone in the audience looks confused. This isnt supposed to be how the story ends; its not the ending they want for themselves, for me.
The women at the book club dont want this ending either. They are sitting around a long oak dining table in the home of our gracious host, who brings food out in many courses. Wine flows freely. They ask questions, mostly bookish ones, but eventually the conversation t...

I recently received an email from Psychiatric Times highlighting current articles. Psychiatric Times is a newspaper that is distributed for free to psychiatrists in the US. To put this in context, the paper appears to be heavily subsidized by pharmaceutical company advertising, and its former editor, Ronald Pies, is a psychiatrist who has been critical of views expressed on Mad In America.
It caught my eye when the first article mentioned had the title, Antipsychotic Discontinuation: When is it OK? I clicked on the link to find a slide show authored by Brian Miller, M.D., P.D., M.P.H. which was titled, Antipsychotics To Respond or Not to Respond?
This was intriguing but confusing. Dr. Millers slides reviewed a paper just published in Schizophrenia Bulletin titled, How Many Patients With Schizophrenia Do Not Respond to Antipsychotic Drugs in the Short Term? An Analysis Based on Individual Patient Data From Randomized Controlled Trials. As pointed out in the slide show, the paper reported on a meta-analysis of 16 randomized controlled studies of antipsychotic drugs over the first 4-6 weeks of treatment. The authors found that a significant number of people do not respond or have relatively poor responses and the majority do not experience a remission of psychotic symptoms. While important, this article addressed short-term rather than long-term care. It is, nevertheless, informative. [Editors note: click here to see the MIA research news report on this paper.]
The senior author of the paper, Stefan Leucht, is a well-known and highly regarded expert in meta-analysis. As noted in the disclosures, he is also well-connected to many pharmaceutical companies. Meta-analysis is a statistical technique that allows for investigation of multiple studies. This provides a broader view of the available data in the field.
Since this was a study of response to drugs, it is important to understand how researchers define that term. When drug studies are conducted, subjects are assessed via rating scales which address the presence and severity of symptoms. A person is asked about a variety of experiences, such as hearing voices or feeling sad, and their responses are scored according to a predetermined rubric. Scores will thus fall on a continuum. The Positive and Negative Symptoms Scale (PANSS) is commonly used in antipsychotic drug trials. It includes 30 items and each can be scored on a scale of one (absent) to seven (extreme). Scores can therefore fall anywhere from 30 to 210.
There are many ways that...

Even though we are constantly being told by scientists to not worry about the Yellowstone supervolcano, NASA is now on a mission to save the earth from exactly that. NASA has ambitious plans to prevent the extinction of the human race by drilling into the supervolcano.
According to the BBC, NASA researchers got in touch with the media outlet to detail the threat lurking beneath Wyomings crust and what they think they can do about it before it eliminates humanity. NASA contacted the BBC after they published an article about supervolcanoes last month.
There are around 20 known supervolcanoes on Earth, with major eruptions occurring on average once every 100,000 years. One of the greatest threats an eruption may pose is thought to be starvation, with a prolonged volcanic winter potentially prohibiting civilization from being able to grow enough food for the current population. In 2012, the United Nations estimated that food reserves worldwide would last a mere 74 days after such an event.
I was a member of the NASA Advisory Council on Planetary Defense which studied ways for NASA to defend the planet from asteroids and comets, explains Brian Wilcox of NASAs Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) at the California Institute of Technology. I came to the conclusion during that study that the supervolcano threat is substantially greater than the asteroid or comet threat.
NASA scientists approached the problem of the Yellowstone supervolcano (the problem we are told isnt actually a problem and that we have nothing to worry about) from a heat standpoint. They assumed cooling down the supervolcano would prevent its eruption.
Yellowstone currently leaks about 60 to 70 percent of its heat into the atmosphere through stream water which seeps into the magma chamber through cracks, while the rest of the heat builds up as magma and dissolves into volatile gasses. The heat and pressure will reach the...

In a repeat of the scramble for safety that preceded the landfall of Hurricane Irma during the 2017 storm season, residents of the Florida panhandle are boarding up homes and fleeing inland as Hurricane Michael, already a Category 1 storm following a rapid intensification over the past 24 hours, barrels toward the northern Gulf of Mexico, where its projected to make landfall on Wednesday, possibly as a Category 3 storm.
National Hurricane Center (@NHC_Atlantic) October 9, 2018
The center of Michael is expected to move inland over the Florida Panhandle or Florida Big Bend area on Wednesday, and then move northeastward across the southeastern U.S. Wednesday night and Thursday, the U.S. National Hurricane Center said in an advisory at 5 a.m. New York time.
The hurricane could generate a 12-foot surge, and 4-8 inches of rain in the region, with isolated areas getting as much as 12 inches. Michael is arriving less than a month after Florence hit North Carolina on Sept. 14, causing devastating floods, killing at least 39 and causing about $45 billion in estimated damages. Duke Energy Corp. warned customers in the region to prepare for potential outages.
After initially forming over the coast of Honduras, Michael battered western Cuba and Mexicos Yucatan Peninsula over the weekend, causing flash flooding that left 13 dead, per CNN. With a h...

Make an awesome Polish Army Bread Bag kit out of a surplus item that can be purchased for around $10.
In this article:
The Polish Army Bread Bag is a military surplus bread bag that can be purchased for around $10 for an unissued item. The bag is made totally from a lightweight cotton canvas measuring approximately 11 inches wide x 10 inches tall x 4 inches deep. The straps are heavier canvas webbing with metal tips and fasteners. The metal came a little dull but the quality is there.
The top flap folds up, giving access to a split compartment interior. The bag is divided into a smaller compartment at the left and a larger one to the right. The left side perfectly holds a wide mouth water container; the larger right accommodates other essential gear. There are four button-flapped smaller pockets sewn to the inside as well. These are perfect for stashing smaller items like spoons, pocket knives, and Ferro rods. The outside front of the pouch has two small pockets adequate for lighters and flashlights.

Did you know theres a wrong way to peel an orange? Lifestyle expert Erika Katz taught Inside Editions Diane McInerney the right way to do it. First, Katz says to score the orange with a knife, being careful not to pierce the flesh of the fruit. Then she slides a spoon underneath the skin to lift it up and simply removes the rind. Speaking of orange snacks, she also has a way to avoid getting orange fingers while eating Cheetos. Her solution: eat them with chopsticks.

Volumes of collected stories are often difficult documents. The career of any writer who has been successful enough to warrant one is likely to be long enough that there are a number of duds. They also often come after a writers legacy is set, making the publication more of a coronation than anything else. But neither is the case with Diane Williams, whose collected stories were recently published by Soho Press. Williams, the godmother of flash fiction, is widely unrecognized for her talent and influence; the Collected Stories, which features all of her nearly three hundred pieces of fiction, is a call to arms.
The work spans from her first book publication in 1990 to her most recent in 2016, with some previously unpublished stories thrown in. Its nearly eight-hundred pages and includes three novellas, themselves each comprised entirely of chapters that are less than a few pages in length. The longest single story in Williams catalog is only seven pages. Most are between one and two pages. Many are only a few sentences long.
Her blunt style has stayed remarkably consistent across decades of writing. In one story, Williams writes, She spent most of her time in the company of people like herself who said they knew what they were thinking. For instance, she thinks any penis is ugly. What makes this distinctive, ironically, are the extra words. These are not people who say what they are thinking or know what they are thinking, but say that they know what they are thinking. Williams often uses dashes where they seem grammatically incorrect or descriptions that appear redundant. But, on second read, what might have seemed extraneous is in fact crucial.
The most distinctive characteristic of Williamss writing is, to steal a word from Italo Calvino, exactitude. This idea is distinct from specificity or precision or other near synonyms. A great deal of her work relies on obscurity. She often leaves ambiguous things that might be considered essential to a storythe genders of the characters, how they relate to one another, where or when its taking placeand instead focuses on whatever very narrow idea or feeling she is trying to convey. In Careful, a story from her 1996 collection The Stupefaction, an und...

We are experiencing an ever-increasing level of surveillance over the citizenry, government censorship and closed-door policies, control and manipulation of the media, and a hardline shift of all institutions to the left. The institutions Im referring to specifically are the educational system (better termed a system of indoctrination), the courts, the religious institutionsevery one of them are all leaning toward (if not striving toward) full blown socialism. Let us recall a key quote:
The goal of Socialism is Communism. Lenin
Just as recently as Tuesday, 10/2/18, we have this stunning announcement as quoted by the Washington Examiner by none other than the Secretary of the Department of Homeland Security. Heres the excerpt:
Homeland Security Secretary Kirstjen Nielsen warned Tuesday the public should steer clear of Russian-owned entities that pose as legitimate news outlets. I encourage everybody, if you are reading something and it suddenly takes you to RT and Sputnik, be aware. I mean, those are state-sponsored news outlets. Theyre not independent, Nielsen said at a cybersecurity summit in Washington, D.C.
Yeah, can you imagine that? Those Russian news sources are state-sponsored, and not independent. So ABC, CBS, and the New York Times are independent? Freedom of the press, right?
And how many White House press briefings would tolerate one personone reporter from the Independent News Media? If it isnt AP (Associated Press) sanctioned with a card, credentials, and lip balm, nobody is getting into those briefings. And how about all of the Presidential Debates, such as those modified by Cooper, Wolf Blitzer, and the like? The ones with the questions and their answers figured out a month in advancewith phony people and actors pretending to ask the questions spontaneously. The show must go on, right?
What about the media bias and slant away from the President right now? We are not talking about policies instituted by the President. We are discussing policies of censorship and watered-down propaganda that eclipses Pravda and Isvestia of the Soviet Union for its Hollywood polish and panache.
We have become as the Soviet Union, and worse: there is no freedom of spee...

The national currency of China weakened beyond a critical level as political tensions with the US worsened.
The yuan dropped below 6.93 per dollar this week, within a striking range of its January 2017 low, owing to a series of negative factors from weaker equities to a vaguer monetary stance by the People Bank of China. Despite the central banks efforts to preserve the yuan value by relaxing reserve ratios for banks, the markets largest stocks fell by over 5 percent.
The latest drop of yuan contributes to an overall 9 percent loss against the dollar in the last six months, making the Chinese yuan one of the worst performing Asian currencies. With the price now forming downside sentiments towards Januarys low, investors are already building up their positions towards the said downtrend.
Investors are stepping up building positions betting the yuan will drop to 7 per dollar now after the currency breached 6.9, Ken Peng, an investment strategist at Citi Private Bank in Hong Kong, told Bloomberg. The RRR cut sends a strong signal that China is in an easing cycle and all external news makes a case for a stronger dollar.
Researchers have previously established a mild inverse correlation between the price action of yuan and bitcoin. Before the PBOC ban took effect, China was contributing to the 90 percent of the overall Bitcoin trading volume that somewhat bridged the fundamentals of both the distinctive assets. However, with all the local crypto exchanges now either closed or offshored, the association between bitcoin and yuan has faded vastly.
The latest Yuan drop could enable PBOC to reintroduce stricter capital controls similar to July. Bitcoin traditionally has posed itself as an answer to any centralized finance control. The devaluation of Turkish Lira and Iranian Rial in the wake of US sanctions, for instance, had raised the local Bitcoin volume and reportedly even the value in those regions. However, this time around in China, no such impacts can be noted in the peer-to-peer Chinese crypto trades.
According to the data available on Local Bitcoins, the minimum Yaun-to-Bitcoin ask rate listed is circa $6,643 (46,000 CNY) which is only 20 dollars higher than the global standard, at the time of this...
The latest crypto investment fund on the block is Dragonfly
Ventures, a $100 million traditional venture fund investing only in
crypto assets, managed by partners Alexander Pack from Bain Capital
Ventures and Bo Feng, founding partner of Ceyuan Ventures.
We come at crypto as generalist venture capitalists who have been investing in internet technology for decades. With Dragonfly, we have decided to go all-in on crypto, because we believe that crypto is the most interesting tech trend today by far, said Dragonfly managing partner and Bain Capital advisor Alexander Pack in an interview with Bitcoin Magazine.
The ability to use technology to redefine fundamental social constructs like money, value, and how value is exchanged across borders, is a once in a century opportunity that could be bigger than the internet, he added.
Pack has been investing in cryptocurrencies and blockchain businesses for more than four years at various venture capital firms in the U.S. and Asia but wanted to create a fund that was solely for cryptocurrency businesses.
He describes Dragonfly as a fully unconstrained venture fund for the crypto asset class, investing globally and across all asset types. We even invest significantly in other cryptofunds, as well as make direct investments in tokens and startups.
Dragonfly has already attracted technology founders and investors from across the U.S. and Asia, including Salil Deshpande (Bain Capital Ventures), Marc Andreessen and Chris Dixon (A16Z), Cyan Banister (Founders Fund) and Olaf Carlson-Wee (Polychain Capital).
Headquartered in San Francisco and Beijing, Dragonfly Capital Partners have identified what they see as a new market opportunity in bridging the gap between East and West, investing in crypto businesses across both continents.
Managing partner Bo Feng is a founder of Ceyuan Ventures. In the 90s he launched the China business of Robertson Stephens, a high-tech investment bank, and is the largest investor in the exchange OKEx.
I see a parallel between the Internet boom in the 90s and the current cryptocurrency market opportunity. The crypto revolution may be even bigger than the internet and more global, says Feng.
According to Feng, Dragonfly takes an ecosystem approach, investing in fund managers around the world and connecting the...

The USMC had acquired a few hundred early 1921 model Thompson submachine guns in 1926, and prompted the US Navy to formally test the guns. The Navy requested a reduction in the rate of fire, in order to improve controllability and reduce ammunition consumption (20 round magazines go quickly at 900rpm!). Auto-Ordnance happily complied, and Oscar Payne returned to the company on his spare time to modify the gun. He did this my adding a substantial amount of mass to the actuator, and was able to reduce the rate of fire substantially. The Navy subsequently ordered 500 guns, designated the Model of 1928.
Since most of the original 15,000 guns made by Colt were still in inventory, Auto-Ordnance simply overstamped the 1 at the end of 1921 with an 8 and put the new heavier bolt assemblies in the guns, leading to the collector term 21/28 overstamp for these Thompsons. The lower rate of fire would become the new standard for the Thompson.
By late 1928, only about 6,000 Thompsons had been sold, and by the end of 1938 10,300 had been sold. Of these, about 1500 total had gone to the US government, about 4100 exported, and the remainder to American police and security agencies. Times were not good for the Thompson it was an expensive military weapon without a war that needed it. Despite the guns huge notoriety, it was actually not used in particularly large numbers by the motor bandits of the 20s and 30s, nor in great numbers by the police. While the FBI did purchase Thompsons, they only bought 115 in total, and not until 1935.
This is the second part in a 5-part series on the development of the Thompson

The research, conducted at The University of Texas at Austin and published in the journal Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences on September 24, shows that honey bees exposed to glyphosate lose some of the beneficial bacteria in their guts. This makes the bees more susceptible to infection and death from harmful bacteria.
Scientists believe this is evidence that glyphosate might be contributing to the years-long decline of honey bees and native bees around the world.
In a press release, the researchers explained their findings:
Because glyphosate interferes with an important enzyme found in plants and microorganisms, but not in animals, it has long been assumed to be nontoxic to animals, including humans and bees. But this latest study shows that by altering a bees gut microbiome the ecosystem of bacteria living in the bees digestive tract, including those that protect it from harmful bacteria glyphosate compromises its ability to fight infection.
To conduct the study, the research team took 2,000 honey bees from hives at the University of Texas campus and fed them either a low dose of glyphosate, a high dose, or a glyphosate-free syrup.
It didnt take long for glyphosate to cause problems for the bees involved in the study: after only three days of exposure at levels known to occur in crop fields, yards, and roadsides, the herbicide significantly reduced healthy gut microbiota. Of eight dominant species of healthy bacteria in the exposed bees, four were found to be less abundant. The hardest hit bacterial species, Snodgrassella alvi, is a critical microbe that helps bees process food and defends against pathogens, the researchers...
