As Hurricane Michael barrels towards the East Coast, an eerie image from Tuesdays satellite views of the storm was captured. At the center of the hurricane, appears to be a likeness of a human skull.
According to USA Today, some weather forecasters tasked with tracking hurricane Michaels progress saw the image of a skull at the center of the now-Category 4 hurricane, which has sustained winds of nearly 130 mph as of early Wednesday. And weather forecasters werent the only ones who took notice. The image does look eerily like that of a skull.
The National Hurricane Center is currently anticipating the possibility of a stronger storm because water temperatures in the northeastern Gulf of Mexico remain warm for autumn, said WeatherTiger meteorologist Ryan Truchelut of Tallahassee, Florida. Satellite views of Hurricane Michael seemed to warn that it will become a Category 4 storm before its eye hits the Florida Panhandle or the states Big Bend area in early afternoon Wednesday.
#Michael has that skull appearance on IR (infrared) satellite this morning as the eye is beginning to clear out through the CDO, meteorologist Jim Dickey at WZVN-TV, Fort Myers, Florida, tweeted Tuesday morning. CDO stands for central dense overcast, which in weather speak means the thunderstorm clouds that surround the eye of a hurricane. Dickey wasnt the only one to tweet about the satellite imagery either.

I can hear the titters now. But, seriously, do you have a deficiency of wood fiber in sawdust, i.e., cellulose?
No? Then why do people follow the common advice to include breakfast cereals such as All Bran, Fiber One, and Raisin Bran that, yes, are rich in fiber, but mostly rich in the cellulose fiber that is a constituent of sawdust? Cellulose in small quantities, as occurs in green vegetables and fruit is harmless, perhaps modestly beneficial. But there is no need to supplement with large quantities, as occurs with such bran or fiber-rich cereals. Nobody suffers from lack of cellulose.
Cellulose fiber undoubtedly bulks up bowel movements, as humans lack the digestive apparatus to break it down. Likewise, very little cellulose is broken down by bowel flora. Cellulose therefore simply passes through the gastrointestinal tract, inert and undigested, while exerting a mild damaging abrasive effect on the delicate intestinal lining in its passage when consumed in high quantities.
The discussion surrounding fibers has been confused by the more recently appreciated fact that fiber is not just one thing, but several different varieties. Just as nutrients can mean everything from vitamin C in citrus fruit to vitamin K2 in fermented dairy products to carotenoids in yellow/orange fruits and vegetables, so can the term fiber refer to a range of different things.
The popular notion of fiber is therefore that of cellulose. The poop-bulking effect of cellulose can fool you into thinking that you have achieved bowel health. In the case of wheat and grains, for instance, wheat germ agglutinin and gliadin peptide fragments are toxic to the intestinal wall, block gallbladder and pancreatic function, and induce alterations in bowel flora. Cellulose and phytates bind minerals, such as iron and zinc, and make them unavailable to you. But the cellulose provides the appearance of bulky stools despite the toxic damage incurred, causing you to believe that youve had a healthy BM. It is clear that the cellulose fibers of grains do not provide protection from colon cancer, despite the popular belief that they are protective. (The studies that document the health benefits of fibers did not break them down into the various forms, lumping all fibers together.)
We therefore need to get rid of the notion that cellulose fibers are necessary for gastrointestinal health. There is, however, a form of fiber that you will miss when you eliminate grains: arabinoxylan. Minus wheat and grains in your diet, you will lose about 3 grams per day of this beneficial (I hate to admit!) indigestible but prebiotic fiber, i.e., a fiber that is indigestible by you but is metabolized by bowel flora. Because most people obtain only a total of 8-9 grams per day of this hugely beneficial class of prebiotic fibers that nourish bowel flora, losing the 3 grams per day of ara...

Cryptocurrency exchange Quadrigacx has blamed an ongoing legal dispute over $21.6 million worth of funds that were frozen by the Canadian Imperial Bank of Commerce (CIBC) in January for delays experienced by some of its customers when requesting fiat currency withdrawals.
The Vancouver-based exchange has blamed a legal dispute between it and CIBC as the reason for delays experienced by some of its customers when trying to withdraw fiat currency.
The Globe and Mail reports that court documents show Quadrigacx has been unable to access 28 million Canadian dollars (approximately $21.6 million) since January after CIBC froze multiple bank accounts owned by Quadrigacxs payment processor, Costodian Inc., and its owner, Jose Reyes.

Japanese internet giant GMO has just announced plans to launch a new stablecoin backed by the Yen. The new coin will be called GMO Japanese Yen and is expected to arrive at some point in 2019. The company is already invested in mining hardware and cryptocurrency exchange businesses, and the launch of the coin will mark its third enterprise in cryptocurrency business.
The announcement of a new stablecoin came on Tuesday, October 9th. The company unveiled their plans and has also announced that preparations for issuing a new digital currency have already started. According to GMO, GMO Japanese Yen (GJY) is to be launch via Z.com, and it will be backed by Japanese Yen.
This makes GMO another player in the Yen-pegged stablecoin market, as there are already several other companies with similar plans. GMO also revealed the goal behind this decision, stating that they plan to target international remittances.
At the moment, there are around 57 other stablecoins in the world, with 23 of them already being in circulation. However, according to GMOs disclosure, GJY will be issued for the Asian region only. Masatoshi Kumagai, the founder and president of GMO, announced that the company already has trusted licenses and banks in Japan. This is why the new stablecoin will be issued in Asia. Additionally, since GMO has a bank in Japan, which is where it keeps its fiat assets, GJY will not have to face concerns that have been surrounding stablecoins like Tether.
Tether has lost a lot of support due to rumors that not all of its coins are backed by the USD. This has caused fear of owning worthless coins, and the stablecoins reputation has suffered as a result.
GMO aims to eliminate such fears with their own stablecoin. The company even noted that GJY will likely become an ideal currency. It will combine low fees, high creditworthiness, as well as the high speed of remittance.
GMO has made its intentions clear a long time ago, and ever since then, it made a significant progress in conquering the cryptocurrency world. Earlier this year, in July, GMO launched an online bank powered by blockchain technology. The project was a joint venture between Aozora Ban...

In the latter half of the 19th and early 20th century, Dr. John Harvey Kellogg operated a sanitarium in Battle Creek, Michigan, a place where you would stay for a month or two and receive four enemas per day, three meals of thick gruel (a mixture of grains such as wheat, rye, barley, millet or corn), and other treatments to cure lumbago, rheumatism, or cancer. Kellogg also advocated a regimen of fresh air, exercise, hydrotherapy and a vegetarian diet that abstained from coffee, tea, alcohol, as well as sex.
One day, while preparing a batch of gruel, Dr. Kellogg was called away, only to return hours later to find his gruel on the table, dry. Being frugal, he wondered if there was a way to salvage it; putting it through a roller, a light bulb of inspiration went off: flaked cereal.
A guest staying at Kelloggs sanitarium, C.W. Post, observed the corn flake-producing process. He promptly copied the process and founded the Post Cereal Company to sell Grape-nuts cereal. This prompted Kelloggs brother, Will Keith Kellogg, to start a competing company to make flake cereal. The Kellogg brothers began with the Battle Creek Sanitarium Health Food Company in 1898 that later became the Kellogg Food Company.
It required many years, but Kelloggs and Post persuaded Americans to replace their meat, eggs, sausage, and biscuits for breakfast with breakfast cereals. Sugar, then high-fructose corn syrup, became ubiquitous ingredients in cereals over time, not uncommonly comprising half or more of all calories, especially in products marketed to children such as Kelloggs Sugar Smacks. The modest beginnings for Kelloggs and Post ballooned over ensuing decades to a multi-billion dollar, international industry selling around 5000 different breakfast cereal products.
Aided by the flawed rationale employed by our own U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, the USDA and its food pyramid and plate, dietitians whose education is in large part supported by breakfast cereal manufacturers, and doctors with next to no understanding of nutrition, many breakfast cereals achieved the status of health food because of vitamin and mineral fortification and grain content. This blunder, of course, ignores the fact that grains raise insulin and blood sugar more than table sugar. Yes, there was cellulose fiber that was indigestible but bulked up bowel movements a...

Blind faith in the U.S. dollar is perhaps one of the most crippling disabilities economists have in gauging our economic future. Historically speaking, fiat currencies are animals with very short lives, and world reserve currencies are even more prone to an early death. But, for some reason, the notion that the dollar is vulnerable at all to the same fate is deemed ridiculous by the mainstream.
This delusion has also recently bled into parts of the alternative economic movement, with some analysts hoping that the Trump Administration will somehow reverse several decades of central bank sabotage in only four to eight years. However, this thinking requires a person to completely ignore the prevailing trend.
Years before there was ever an inkling of a trade war, multiple nations were establishing bilateral agreements that would cut the dollar as the primary exchange mechanism. China has been a leader in this effort, despite it being one of the largest buyers of U.S. Treasury debt and dollar reserves since the 2008 crash. In the past few years, these bilateral deals have been growing in scope, starting small and then expanding into massive agreements on raw commodities. China and Russia are a perfect example of the de-dollarization trend, with the two nations forming a trade alliance on natural gas as far back as 2014. That agreement, which is expected to start boosting imports to China this year, removes the need for dollars as a reserve mechanism for international purchases.
Russia and parts of Europe, including Germany, are also growing closer in terms of trade ties. With Germany and Russia entering into the Nordstream 2 gas pipeline deal despite condemnations from the Trump Administration, we can see a clear progression of nations moving away from the U.S. and the dollar, and into a basket of currencies.
Energy Secretary Rick Perry has suggested that sanctions are possible over the Nordstream project, but trade war policies only seem to be hastenin...

The German military first encountered American Bazookas in Tunisia in 1943, and quickly put in place a program to copy and improve on the design. At that point, the latest German antitank weapons was the Racketenwerfer 43 Puppchen, which was a locked-breech rocket launcher built on a carriage like a standard AT gun. It had a substantial range and a very effective 88mm shaped charge warhead, but lacked the one-man mobility offered by the Bazooka. So, the Rackenetpanzerbuchse 43 shortly thereafter renamed the Panzerschreck was developed in late 1943.
The Panzershreck kept the 88mm bore of the Puppchen, so that the warhead could be kept unchanged. The rear half of the munition was redesigned to fit an open tube type of launcher. The early Bazookas captured by German forces were at that time fitted with a battery-powered firing system, which the Germans opted to replace (as would the Americans, in later versions). The Panzerschreck trigger used a small generator, where a heavy spring pushed an iron core through a copper winding and magnet, this creating an electrical charge to fire the rocket.
One shortcoming of the Panzerschrcek compared to the Bazooka was that the German rockets did not burn completely within the launch tube the motors continued to fire for about the first 2 meters of flight. This meant that the shooter would receive substantial burns to the face and hands if protective gear was not worn when firing. Initially, troops were instructed to wear filter-less gas masks and winter gloves when shooting, but it was quickly recognized that this was an impractical burden. Soldiers in the field began to craft protective shields to mount on the tubes, and these were formalized in a windowed shield was introduced in 1944 as standard on new production launchers and as a kit to retrofit existing weapons in the field.

Essays by Roland Barthes marked with fluorescent highlighters; poems by Carlos de Rokha or Enrique Lihn stapled together; ring-bound or precariously fastened novels by Witold Gombrowicz or Clarice Lispector: its good to remember that we learned to read with these photocopies, which we waited for impatiently, smoking, on the other side of the copy-shop window. As citizens of a country where books are ridiculously expensive to buy and libraries are poorly equipped or nonexistent, we got used to reading photocopies, and we even came to find it charming. In exchange for just a few pesos, some giant, tireless machines could bestow on us the literature we so desired. We read those warm bundles of paper and then stored them on shelves as if they were real books. Because thats what they were to us: rare, beloved books. Important books.
In the second half of the nineties, some publishers started a campaign against photocopying books, and they used this disquieting slogan: A book dies every time you photocopy one. We felt those campaigns as a kind of attack on us: they wanted to take away the only means we had to read what we really wanted to read. They said the photocopy was killing the book, but we knew that literature survived in those stained pages, just as it survives now on screensbecause books are still scandalously expensive in Chile.
The discussion around digital books, incidentally, is at times overly elaborate: the defenders of conventional books appeal to romantic images of reading (to which I fully subscribe), and the electronic propagandist will insist on the comfort of carrying your library in your pocket or the miracle of endlessly interlinking texts. But its not so much about habits as it is about costs. Can we really expect a student to spend twenty thousand pesos on a bo...
In light of a slowing crypto market, with volumes, volatility, and retail interest seemingly disappearing altogether, industry leaders have begun to throw their weight behind this budding asset class. Most recently, CEOs of leading cryptocurrency startups, well-known commentators, and influential change-makers have made appearances on mainstream media outlets, while simultaneously taking to social media outlets to express their undying bullish sentiment.
On Tuesday, crypto startup Bitwala, which touts itself as a bridge to the crypto economy and a blockchain bank, revealed that it had joined hands with Berlin-based solarisBank to establish a crypto banking service, which will blend the cryptocurrency and fiat worlds into a single, easy-to-access platform. Even though the platform is still in the works, the Germany-focused venture has already been met with widespread success, with the startup divulging that it had pre-registered over 35,000 intrigued consumers.
While crypto banking isnt a newfangled innovation by this industrys standards, Bitwalas take on the concept has garnered its fair share of success, as the platform will reportedly be insured for up-to 100,000 Euros and will offer support for Sepa-compliant debit and credit transactions.
Just an hour after this development hit headlines, Bitwala CEO Joerg Von Minckwitz sat down with Bloomberg to discuss his firms new product and his own opinion on the state of the cryptosphere.

Vaccines are being under investigation for the possible side effects they can cause. In order to supply new information, an electron-microscopy investigation method was applied to the study of vaccines, aimed at verifying the presence of solid contaminants by means of an Environmental Scanning Electron Microscope equipped with an X-ray microprobe. The results of this new investigation show the presence of micro- and nanosized particulate matter composed of inorganic elements in vaccines samples which are not declared among the components and whose unduly presence is, for the time being, inexplicable. A considerable part of those particulate contaminants have already been verified in other matrices and reported in the literature as non-biodegradable and non-biocompatible. The evidence collected is suggestive of some hypotheses correlated to diseases that are mentioned and briefly discussed.
Vaccines are one of the most notable inventions meant to protect people from infectious diseases. The practice of variolation is century-old and is mentioned in Chinese and Indian documents dated around 1000 A.D. Over time, variolation has been replaced by vaccination, vaccines have been enhanced as to technology, and the vaccination practice is now standardized worldwide.
Side effects have always been reported but in the latest years it seems that they have increased in number and seriousness, particularly in children as the American Academy of Pediatrics reports [1,2].

From The New York Times: Disclosure is better than no disclosure, but it does not eliminate the conflict of interest. Its simply a way of saying caveat emptor, and leaving it to readers to decide whether the research was biased. But most people even doctors and science reporters arent really equipped to make those judgments, particularly when data are suppressed.
I would suggest two reforms. First, researchers at academic medical centers should not accept any payments other than research support from drug companies, and that support should have no strings attached no control over the design, interpretation and publication of trial results. We should go back to arms length grants.
Second, doctors should not accept gifts from drug companies, even small ones, and they should pay for their own meetings and continuing education, as is standard in other professions. They can afford it.
In the meantime, those of us who read these studies should remain skeptical about them until several different trials reach the same result.
The indignation about Dr. Baselga is justified. But the fact that other physicians disclose their myriad conflicts of interest does not solve the underlying problem. Collaboration with industry can lead to important scientific contributions, but we should not let drug companies buy the hearts and minds of researchers. The cost of this is high, and not just in drug prices. It means both doctors and patients believe prescription drugs are better and safer than they really are.

Lucretius, De Rerum Natura 1.112-119
For no one knows the nature of the soul-
Whether its born, or whether instead it slips
Into us at birth; whether it ends when we do,
Torn apart by death, or whether it sees
The darkness and the yawning pits of Orcus,
Or, through some power divine, insinuates
Itself into other beasts, as our Ennius sang
The first to fetch from lovely Helicon
A crown with undying leaves, which was to be
Famed among Italian tribes of people
ignoratur enim quae sit natura animai,
nata sit an contra nascentibus insinuetur
et simul intereat nobiscum morte dirempta
an tenebras Orci visat vastasque lacunas
an pecudes alias divinitus insinuet se,
Ennius ut noster cecinit, qui primus amoeno
detulit ex Helicone perenni fronde coronam,
per gentis Italas hominum quae clara clueret

Although the United States has been seen as a founding father of modern technologies, other nations like Singapore, Malta, Switzerland are leading the crypto and blockchain revolution. These may not be locations that many would initially suspect to be innovation capitals.
A setback that many crypto startups face today is relationships with financial institutions and regulatory bodies, as these organizations believe that this up and coming technology poses a threat to the traditional way of life. Over the course of Bitcoins decade-long history, a countless number of banks have unlawfully shut down accounts associated with the cryptocurrency space, leading to a feeling of mutual distrust between the cryptosphere and some institutions.
Take the example of, CIBC, one of Canadas leading financial institutions, which froze $28 million of a local exchanges assets in an apparent case of bias against cryptocurrencies as a whole. Although CIBC may have won the battle, some suspect that it has lost the war, due to the theory that as digital assets continue to gain traction, crypto-friendly jurisdictions will begin to swell into formidable enemies that traditionalists will undoubtedly fear with a passion.
Singapore, on the other hand, has accepted cryptocurrencies with a smile and a wave, with the city-states financial regulator reportedly providing support for crypto startups in the form of fully-fledged banking accounts. According to a Bloomberg article on the matter, Ravi Menon of the Monetary Authority of Singapore (MAS) revealed that the local government is doing its best to connect banks and cryptocurrency fintech startups to see if a common footing can be reached.
The island nation isnt all talk no game, as EurekaPro, a Singapore-based exchange with support for over three fiat currencies, recently launched its platform for investors situated in the Southeast Asian market. As explained by the platforms CEO, Junus Eu, EurekaPro will provide a unique proposition for crypto traders within the region, as the multi-fiat support will remove barriers for entry for crypto in a profound way.
Although Eu didnt make mention of Singapo...
