Houston voters eliminate fluoride in water supply "IndyWatch Feed Health"

Houston voters took auction to end the 16-year practice of fluoridation of the citys water supply. With a 482-292 vote, the public ended a long and often times heated debate in city government.

The Houston City Council in May unanimously voted to place the issue on the ballot following a public meeting and several weeks of discussion on the matter. The group had the option to do nothing, remove fluoride after giving state regulators a 90-day notice or let the public decide.

An effort was made by citizens two years prior to stop the fluoridation practice. The council did not take auction.

Political Fictions: Unraveling America at a West Wing Fan Convention "IndyWatch Feed Literature"

In times of chaos, we turn to narrative. Throughout the tumult of the George W. Bush years, the preferred palliative for the demoralized left was Aaron Sorkins The West Winga political drama about the lives of White House staffers in the administration of Josiah Bartlet, a fictional democratic president played by Martin Sheen. The show, which originally aired in the late 1990s and early 2000s, depicted a world in which government could serve as an engine of good, an instrument of change. Across the series, the staff brokered peace in the Middle East, dreamt up free college education, and unraveled the Gordian knot of entitlements like Medicare and Social Security. In the wake of 9/11, as the U.S. was contending with the specter of domestic terror and gearing up for an unpopular war in Iraq, the shows viewership tilted toward 17 million.

The storyline I found most compelling as a young, aspiring author was the thread about the presidential speechwriters. Throughout the show, Toby Ziegler (Richard Schiff) and Sam Seaborn (Rob Lowe) sequestered themselves in the darkened catacombs of the White House, armed with nothing more than legal pads and Bic pens, testing out snatches of oratory on each other as they sought to draft a comprehensive narrative about America. Tonight, what began in the commons of Concord, Massachusetts, President Bartlet intones in a campaign speech, as an alliance of farmers and workers, of cobblers and tinsmiths, of statesmen and students, of mothers and wives, of men and boys, lives two centuries later. It was this heady idealismthe notion that America itself was merely a story, a fragile narrative continually authored by each administrationthat led me to see politics as a noble calling, a redoubtable vocation. The depth of my fandom revealed itself in ways that were oblique but no less shameful. Throughout college, I festooned the walls of my bedroom with the same framed Dont Tread on Me flag that Seaborn keeps in his office and, on weekends, I recreationally performed critical exegeses on the rhetoric of presidential inaugurals. After watching the 2004 Democratic National Convention, during which Barack Obama delivered a speech whose elegance rivaled anything Aaron Sorkin had written, I wrote an effusive fan letter and shipped it off to his senate office in Chicago. A few weeks later, a staffer cal...

Blockchain Opens Green Capital Market to Countries and Enterprises "IndyWatch Feed Crypto"

Despite the futuristic forecasts, there are not so many real-world applications of the blockchain technology, especially at a global scale. But the green capital market, where the blockchain has already been tested and proven its applicability, is not a case. The technology opens ecological markets for enterprises, allowing emissions trading. In this publication, we explain how this happens.

Before turning to a specific case, lets touch upon the above-mentioned emission trading and clarify the essence of this phenomenon.

The case concerns emissions of CO2 into the atmosphere, whose main issuers are power generating companies using fossil fuels. To reduce the harmful effects on the environment and the prevention of climate change, the Kyoto Protocol came into effect in 2005, providing for emission trading.

Emission allowances, or quotas, and carbon credits (accountable emission reductions) are measured by carbon units equivalent to one tonne of carbon dioxide emitted into the atmosphere. Since above-quota emissions are limited and subject to a fine, carbon credits are in demand and available for purchase on the exchange. This practice is called cap and trade. Other market models like credit-based or tax and trade or transaction-based are also developed and implemented.

The point of carbon units trading is not only to make countries buy off problems but also to make mitigation, offsetting of environmental damage most cost-efficient, to stimulate them to reduce harmful emissions, effectively develop their economy and attract investments.

However, if the theory looks great, things are somewhat more complicated in practice. The markets suffer from over-regulation, over-centralisation, and disintegration, unpredictability, fraud, and non-transparency, as well as high transaction costs.

This is where blockchain comes into play

The worlds first carbon units transaction using this technology took place in the spring of 2017, in the DAO IPCI blockchain ecosystem. The system built on the Robonomics digital platform by Airalab...

eToro Analyst: Bitcoin, Crypto To End 2018 With Santa Claus Rally "IndyWatch Feed Crypto"

As 2019 looms, analysts have sought to discern where the crypto market could be heading next. While bearish sentiment is still a common sight, a growing number of industry pundits have overtly expressed their opinion that 2018s crypto winter is on the verge of kicking the bucket.

Crypto To Undergo Santa Claus Rally

Although bears regained control of the crypto market on Thursday morning, reports, which cite a number of analysts and indicators, claim that a bullish picture is being painted for Bitcoin and its altcoin brethren.

Bloombergs Vildana Hajric noted that the moving average convergence divergence (MACD) indicator pertaining to the Bloomberg Galaxy Crypto Index (BCGI), parented by Mike Novogratz himself, has entered its first positive divergence in a month. While a single indicator shouldnt be the sole influence behind ones investment decision, in the past, BCGIs move from a negative to positive divergence has been a precursor to BTC rallies.

This analysis lines up with Hajrics previous crypto call, in which she noted that the Directional Movement Index (DMI) indicator is signaling for Bitcoin (BTC) to head higher. More specifically, DMI, a popular indicator of the trend strength of a publicly-traded asset, has reportedly entered a new bullish phase, just like MACD.

Mati Greenspan, a senior market analyst at eToro, was in consonance with Hajric, with the long-time Bitcoin trader explaining to Bloomberg that the technicals [in this market] look great, which may be the harbinger of cryptos next bull run.

Keeping in mind that tech...

13 Dead After Mass Shooting At Southern California Bar "IndyWatch Feed Survival"

This report was originally published by Tyler Durden at Zero Hedge

At least 13 people, including a sheriffs deputy and the suspected shooter, have been killed, while multiple others were injured during a shooting at the country western dance hall Borderline Bar & Grill in Thousand Oaks, Calif. The bar was holding a College Country night event when the shooter reportedly stormed the entrance, per NBC News.

Media reports claimed hundreds of people were inside the venue at the time of the shooting, which began at around 11:30 pm local time.

Thousand Oaks is situated in Ventura County about 40 miles northwest of Los Angeles.

One witness interviewed by local TV station ABC7 said that the shooting started when the gunman approached the entrance to the bar, located at 99 Rolling Oaks Drive, and shot a security guard and cashier. He then lobbed a smoke bomb inside the building as he continued to fire into the crowd.

According to a local CBS affiliate station, witnesses described the suspected gunman as a man who was wearing a trench coat and had a scarf on his face, or possibly a beard. Another described him as being dressed in all black.

One survivor described how he threw a stool through a window and escaped during a lull in the shooting.

We heard shots, I looked up and knew exactly what was happening. I tried to pull down as many people as I could, he said. As soon as we heard a break in the shooting we knew he was reloading and we threw a couple of bar stools through the closest to us so we could get out.

He said the shooter entered and turned to the door counter and coat check...

Why Is This Legal? by Laura Hayes, delivered on 11-2-18 in Utah

This evening, I am going to be speaking to you about vaccines, specifically, their inexcusable lack of safety, the toxic and hazardous ingredients contained in them that have no business being injected into any human, and the catastrophic results we continue to witness due to their use. In the time I have, I will only be able to scratch the surface of the harm that vaccines cause, both to the individual recipient, and to subsequent generations, if the recipient is still able to reproduce. I wont have time to delve into the lack of efficacy or necessity for vaccines, but suffice it to say that their failure rate is high, their efficacy is based on measures which are unproven and unreliable, and injecting poisons, toxins, neurotoxins, carcinogens, immune- and nervous-system destroyers, endocrine disruptors, ingredients that have never been clinically approved, and unknown ingredients that are not required to be disclosed, is in no way health-inducing or protective, for any one, at any age. As I like to say, one does not need to be a PhD in biology or chemistry, or an MD, or even academically astute to understand that the practice of vaccination is not founded on any valid science. Common sense, basic science, and parental instincts are more than enough to discern the truth about vaccines. Now, lets launch into th...

Bithumb Partners Asian Amazon While Lawyers Urge Korean Govt to Establish Crypto Framework "IndyWatch Feed Crypto"

Lawyers in the Southeast Asian country lobbied the government today to quickly establish a legal framework for investor protection.

The Korean Bar Association rarely campaigns publically for specific technologies or industry groups, however members felt strongly enough to do so for the cryptocurrency ecosystem within the country. According to Reuters, Bar Association President Kim Hyun spoke to reporters at a news conference held at parliament;

We urge the government to break away from negative perceptions and hesitation, and draw up bills to help develop the blockchain industry and prevent side effects involving cryptocurrencies,

The government responded that it would only decide on regulation after thorough studies have been conducted and that they are currently in the process of doing so.

South Korea is currently home to some of the largest crypto exchanges in the world by trade volume. Many of them are seeking to expand beyond Korean shores in order to capture a rapidly expanding market in the region.

Bithumb Lanches Payment Service with Asian Amazon

Also in South Korea, Bithumb has partnered with Asian online retail giant Qoo10 in order to provide a crypto payments service. According to the official announcement the collaboration will expand the existing Bithumb cash payment service to a global payment method.

Often touted as the Asian Amazon, Qoo10 has markets beyond South Korea, operating in China, Indonesia, Hong Kong and Singapore. An original agreement was signed back in August whereby Qoo10 would be using the exchanges payments system called Bithumb Cache.

The partnership will enable customers to shop online and make payments via Bithumbs platform. It essentially gives the Korean exchange access to markets in other countries in the region which could open doors for further cryptocurrency payments.

According to TechCrunch, eBay paid over $570 million earlier this year to aquire Qoo10 in order to expand its footprint in Asia.

Book Review: Death on Tyneside by Eileen Thornton "IndyWatch Feed Literature"

Death on Tyneside (Agnes Lockwood Mysteries, #2)Death on Tyneside by Eileen Thornton

My rating: 5 of 5 stars

Earlier this year, I read the first book in the Agnes Lockwood mystery series by Eileen Thornton. I really enjoyed it and got a copy of the second book, Death on Tyneside, last month. I added it to my reading queue for November and finished it earlier today. Kudos to the author for delivering a robust sequel full of heart, mystery, and connections.

Agnes has returned from a trip to visit her sons in Australia. Upon arrival and a walk through the park, she stumbles on a dead body. It has no identification, no clues, and no history from what the cops can tell. Agnes former friend and potential renewed love interest, a Detective Chief InspectorAlan Johnson, begins to investigate the case. Agnes pushes her way into the mystery, as she often does, but this time, its personal. A man she thinks has been following her tells her a story that could change her life. Will she believe him? And how are the two stories connected?

Thornton has created a fun and special character in Agnes. Shes smart and reminiscent of Miss Marple, but probably a good 25 years younger, too. She sees things the cops dont see and gets herself stuck in very difficult situations. Hopefully she doesnt do it too often or she might exhaust all nine lives! (No, shes not a cat, Im just being funny). I enjoy the hotel scenery and the back and forth point of views to see whats happening in the whole story from different character perspectives. Agnes also makes a new friend on the police, Morris, who I would like to see become a supporting and recurring character.

Im hopeful we get to meet the two sons in the next caper. I would love to see Agnes rounded out even more. I also love the relationship between Agnes and Alan its charming and complex in terms of never quite listening to one another but also challenging each other to be more open. It would be fun to see some scenes from their past, too

If you like lovely, light mysteries with a clever amateur sleuth who can be too nosy but always kind and helpful, you will love this one.

Karabiner-S: The East German Unicorn SKS "IndyWatch Feed Survival"

The following video is brought to you courtesy of the Forgotten Weapons YouTube Channel. Click the video below to watch it now.

Cool Forgotten Weapons merch!

One of the rarest patterns of the SKS is the East German type the Karabiner-S. Total production quantity is not known, but their survival rate is quite low and most of the examples in the US are Vietnam War bring backs. At any rate, the Karabiner-S is not quite an exact copy of the standard SKS. While it does share all the same mechanical features, the East Germans opted to leave out the butt trap cleaning kit, the cleaning rod, and to cut a German style sling slot in the stock instead of using sling swivels. These differences make the gun relatively easy to spot. Markings are a bit cryptic, with a 2-digit year of production in from of the serial number, followed by a letter prefix and a 4-digit serial number. Not all letters were used as prefixes; in fact only 6 have been documented: A, E, F, L, N, and U. Whether these have specific meaning or if this was a scheme to make production look larger than it really was (akin to the Czech vz.52 pistols) is not clear.

Welcome To Crypto: Star Treks Shatner Defends Ethereum, Talks ERC Standards "IndyWatch Feed Crypto"

When cryptocurrency enthusiasts discuss adoption the crypto industrys buzzword of 2018 the names of bigwig institutions, household corporations, and prominent executives and investors are often thrown around. So, it should come as no surprise that the entire crypto community was rattled when William Shatner, known for his portrayal of Star Treks James T. Kirk, went full crypto-hip on Twitter, discussing Ethereum will unbridled passion and a tinge of humor.

James T. Kirk Talks Ethereum: ERC20, ERC721, And The Whole Shebang

Although many do not know him by name, save for the baby boomers of yesteryear, William Shatner is and has been one of the most influential actors in the past century. However, after decades on screen, the now 87-year-old has sought time away from the public spotlight, seeking other ventures that dont involve dressing up and smiling for the camera.

This entrepreneurial drive, interestingly enough, has seemingly led him straight to crypto, arguably the biggest innovation since the world beckoned TCP/IP in. While he briefly hinted at his interest in crypto in the past, Captain Kirk cemented his crypto-hip behavior when he issued the following tweet on Tuesday afternoon.

The message, which makes use of this industrys favorite words/phrases HODL, FUD, FOMO, and bagholder highlights that in spite of his age, Shatner holds cryptocurrencies near and dear to his heart.

Following up on this tweet, which was partially made in jest, Shatner sent Vitalik Buterin, creator of Ethereum, a thumbs-up a message of approval that came straight out of left field, so to speak. While Buterin didnt respond (maybe because hes too young to know who Shatner is), the actors message saw an abounding number of responses fro...

The Taste of Dawn "IndyWatch Feed Literature"

This is the second installment of a five-part series on the senses of dawn. Each piece (touch, sound, smell, taste, sight) will run at daybreak (EST) this week.

Original Illustration by Jackson Joyce

In touch, sound, and smell, dawn gives a sense of triumph. Its a golden feeling of awe and optimism: trumpet blasts and peachy whiffs and caresses. Its not always so. Theres another side of dawn, a side that has nothing to do with hope or gold. Theres the dawn defined by dread, when your eyes are open too early and the light turns gray and mustardy.

This is the dawn when youve been awake all night, when the fanged and hungry muskrats of insomnia have chewed the corners of your mind. Theyve spent the night whispering lies about the small pink blotch of skin on your chest that will bloom into cancer and seep through your flesh and into your heart, or reminding you of every false, infuriating word your father said, or giving you a close look at the soundless black abyss that waits for you.

This is the dawn when youve been up all night drunk, on drugs, a lunatic. The taste is sour. It is stale. It is the rotting tang of summer dumpsters. It tastes like sucking spilled whiskey from the sleeve of a wool sweater. It tastes like things you want to forget about yourself. It tastes like the amoxicillin you drank as a child to cure the infection in your ear. It tastes like dust, like desiccated residue, like skin and shit and heavy, metal particles that linger in the air. It tastes like regret. And it tastes, too, like fear.

Toothpaste doesnt help, or it helps only a little bit, because the taste is not just on your tongue, but down your throat and in your belly, coating your lungs, lining the sick, wet crannies of your poisoned guts.

The taste of fear comes from the knowledge, as the sky begins its shift, that you have mur...
