A New York City Psychiatric Hospital Patient Said Staffers Illegally Restrained and Drugged Her; She Never Got Over It Mad In America

When Christine Miranda died last April, the consequences of a decades-long cutting habit were etched into her body. There are scars up and down both arms, observed a social worker who had recently treated her.

I was taught [as a little girl] to [cut], Miranda told me a few months before her death. My father cut me, punched me, kicked me. He literally would sit me on the coffee table in the kitchen. It was sessions of it. It was torture. The point was not to cry or react.

Miranda had reached out to me days after she had made a nearly 2.5-inch-long subcutaneous cut into her upper right arm, as well as a similarly sized cut into her left thigh. It was the worst shes ever done, her mom says.

But Miranda said she wasnt attempting suicide when she made the cuts. Instead, she explained, she made the cuts, to avoid getting to the point of suicidality, which she added, every day I think about. Her outpatient treatment team, whom she called for help, arranged for an ambulance to pick her up at her Bronx home and take her to Mount Sinai Hospital in Midtown Manhattan.

In Mount Sinais emergency room, according to medical records the hospital shared with Miranda, doctors stitched up her wounds. There is no indication in the ER records that Miranda was uncooperative or combative.

The ER staffers then transferred Miranda to the psychiatric emergency department for a mental health evaluation.

I think about it and I wanna cry

As soon as Miranda was moved to Mount Sinais psychiatric ER, staffers there reported that she abruptly became uncooperative and unruly. [She was] yelling at [staff] members, according to one of the hos...

Laughing Gas: Permanent Harm for Instant Euphoria? Articles

Nitrous oxide is a colorless gas commonly used by dentists for sedation and pain relief. Recreational use is growing in popularity and, as it is, so are the number of people suffering from significant adverse effects.1 It is also used to make whipped cream and, in the car industry, to enhance engine performance.

Users describe the feeling of inhaling nitrous oxide as a feeling of floating or euphoria that dissipates within one to two minutes. On the street, nitrous oxide is also called balloons, hippie crack, nos, noz, chargers, laughing gas, buzz bomb, nangs and whippets.2,3

The effect is immediate. It can also cause dizziness and severe headache, and can stop you from thinking straight. Some people describe short-lived but intense feelings of paranoia that can be accompanied by auditory distortion and hallucination, which is when you hear and see things that are not there.

Nitrous oxide was first discovered in 1772 by Joseph Priestley and popularized by chemist Humphry Davy as an anesthetic and intoxicant. While some believe nitrous oxide is relatively innocuous as a recreational drug,4 others have experienced significant nerve damage related to the inactivation of vitamin B12 that it causes in your body.5

Nitrous Oxide Abuse a Growing Problem

The U.S., Australia and Europe report nitrous oxide has grown in popularity as a recreational drug.6 The gas can be purchased in lipstick-size capsules containing 0.2 ounces that are used to fill a balloon from which users inhale the gas. These are called little crackers and can have a bad taste. Nitrous oxide can also be purchased in large cylinders producing gas that is tasteless and has a stronger effect.

While The Guardian7 characterizes the gas used as widespread with relative safety, Dr. David Nicholl from Sandwell and West Birmingham NHS Trust told Sky News:8

"Maybe once every five or six years, I'll see a patient who's had a stroke from taking cocaine. Yet, every week, I'm seeing this in my ward. So, from my point of view, this is actually a bigger problem."

The U.K. is seeing a spike in use, which has triggered talks of stricter regulations around the sale and use of nitrous oxide gas. Sky News9 desc...

Two Studies Test Quercetin And COVID Outcomes Articles

From Dr. Joseph Mercola

Since COVID-19 first entered the scene, exchange of ideas has basically been outlawed. By sharing my views and those from various experts throughout the pandemic on COVID treatments and the experimental COVID jabs, I became a main target of the White House, the political establishment and the global cabal.

Propaganda and pervasive censorship have been deployed to seize control over every part of your life, including your health, finances and food supply. The major media are key players and have been instrumental in creating and fueling fear.

I am republishing this article in its original form so that you can see how the progression unfolded.

Originally published: October 14, 2021

In an August 21, 2021, newsletter,1 Dr. Michael Murray discussed the use of quercetin for respiratory infection symptoms. In November 2020, hed suffered a very mild and brief bout of COVID-19.

He also recounts an anecdotal story of a friend who developed suspicious respiratory symptoms. His friend had been taking a number of supplements said to offer protection, but was still feeling awful.

As it turns out, the one thing hed not taken was quercetin, and as soon as he did, that same day, his symptoms started to dissipate. This experience, Murray says, is consistent with the results from two clinical trials that were recently published.

Quercetin seems to be a safe, far less expensive, and easier-to-obtain and it works by a similar mechanism, driving zinc into the cells to stop viral replication.

Statistical Improvement in Clinical Outcomes

In the first study,2 42 COVID-19 outpatients were divided into two groups. One group of 21 patients received standard medical therapy consisting of analgesics and an antibiotic (acetaminophen 500-milligram (mg) to 1,000-mg dose if body temperature was higher than 37.5 degrees C 99.5 F with a maximum daily dosage of 3 grams, and 500 mg azithromycin for three consecutive days).

The other group of 21 patients received standard therapy plus the equivalent of 600 mg of quercetin per day (divided into three doses) for seven days, followed by another seven-day course of 400 mg of quercetin per day (divided into two doses).

The quercetin was used with sunflower lecithin, which has been demonstrated to increase absorption in the gut by as much as 20 times, compared to pure quercetin formulations.

The main outcomes being evaluated were virus clearance and symptoms. After one week of treatment, 16 of the 21 patients in the quercetin group tested negative f...

The Framework for Laundering Money With Immunity Articles

As the global cabal continues to wage its war against the sovereignty of humanity, we're continuing to expose the unrestricted privileges and layers of immunity enjoyed by powerful organizations worldwide.

In November 2022, we featured Part 1 of investigative journalist Corey Lynn's Laundering With Immunity report, which revealed 76 international organizations and banks that enjoy and leverage these immunities, privileges and tax exemptions to maintain power and control.

"These aren't just ordinary organizations," Lynn explains. "They happen to be the prime organizations that run the new world order globalists' agendas against humanity, and they have hundreds of NGOs working with and through them."1

Part 2 of the report,2 discussed in detail in the video above,3 goes even deeper into key organizations pulling the strings behind the scenes, allowing them to "operate as ghosts without transparency or accountability." "Hold onto your seats," Lynn says.4

Layers of Immunity Allow for World Domination

To understand the threat that comes along with granting organizations the power to operate outside of laws and constitutions, it helps to understand how deep the layers of immunity go. The International Organizations Immunities Act (IOIA), passed by the U.S. Congress in 1945, granted dozens of organizations with privileges that equate to that of diplomats.

Each organization's headquarters receives additional protections from the government of the country in which it's located, via "headquarters agreements." Further, the protected organizations can extend their immunities to individuals, organizations or banks working with them, including family members of staff. According to Lynn:5

"To put it in layman terms, a wealthy bunch of corrupt families got together centuries ago and plotted how they wanted to control the world. The challenge was in how they would get around constitutions, state laws and international laws so they could operate outside the system that the rest of humanity had to function within.

This would afford them the ability to move like ghosts, transfer wealth, and camouflage all of their schemes with false storylines as they secured more and more control with each decade, while alleging how 'transparent'...

China And Brazil Strike Deal To Ditch The US Dollar Medical Kidnap

by ZeroHedge News

In a time when de-dollarization news are dropping fast and furious and even Elon Musk is now jumping on a bandwagon

which we first defined a decade ago, not a day goes by without some modest or not so modest shift toward a world in which the US currency fully weaponized after February 2022 for the entire world to see and fear is no longer the worlds reserve. And today was no exception.

According to the Brazilian government, China and Brazil have reached a deal to trade in their own currencies, ditching the United States dollar as an intermediary entirely, AFP reported.

The deal, Beijings latest salvo against the almighty greenback, will enable China, the top rival to US economic hegemony, and Brazil, the biggest economy in Latin America, to conduct their massive trade which amounts to $150 billion per year, and financial transactions directly, exchanging yuan for reais and vice versa instead of going through the US dollar.

In doing so China extends its bilateral, USD-exempting currency arrangements beyond countries such as Russia, Pakistan and Saudi Arabia to now include the Latin American exporting powerhouse.

The expectation is that this will reduce costs promote even greater bilateral trade and facilitate investment, the Brazilian Trade and Investment Promotion Agency (ApexBrasil) said in a statement.

China is Brazils biggest trading partner, with a record US$150.5 billion (S$200 billion) in bilateral trade last year.

The deal, which follows a preliminary agreement in January, was announced after a high-level China-Brazil business forum in Beijing.

Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva was originally scheduled to attend the forum as part of a high-profile China visit, but had to postpone his trip indefinitely on Sunday...

Journal pulls papers by embattled scientist at national research center in France Retraction Watch

A nanotechnology journal has retracted two papers coauthored by a scientist in France who is accused of manipulating or reusing graphs and figures in nearly two dozen instances, Retraction Watch has learned.

The scientist, Jolanda Spadavecchia (pictured, is research director at the French National Centre for Scientific Research (CNRS). In December, an article in the newspaper Le Monde described allegations of misconduct in Spadavecchias lab.

Spadavecchia is second author of one of the retracted papers, Interaction of Thermus thermophilus ArsC enzyme and gold nanoparticles naked-eye assays speciation between As(III) and As(V); she is senior author of the other, One-pot synthesis of a gold nanoparticleVmh2 hydrophobin nanobiocomplex for glucose monitoring.

The papers were published in Nanotechnology in 2015 and 2016, respectively. They have been cited 19 and 18 times, according to Clarivates Web of Science.

The retraction notices appeared online March 30. They state that an investigation by the journals publisher, IOP Publishing, found that a figure in each report was duplicated from another source without disclosure.

In the 2016 paper, an electron-microscopy image was apparently copied from the 2015 paper; that paper contained a histogram from a 2013 paper on which  Spadavecchia was an author.

The duplications in the two papers are not isolated incidents. In an open letter to CNRS published on Dorothy Bishops blog, the psychologist and scientific sleuth, along with 16 other researchers, responded to the recent article in Le Monde...

LGBTQIA+ Peer Respites: The Personal Is Political Mad In America

Peer respites have great value. Affinity peer respitessuch as an LGBTQIA+ peer respitemay have even more.

Affinity groups are basically groups of people who share a common interest. In this context, they refer to groups, supports, and services that are designed by and expressly for individuals from specific marginalized communities. This element has yet to be fully considered (beyond the obvious shared experience of having a psychiatric history) by any peer respite in the country. Its time for a change.

Stranger Things

LGBTQIA+ sign: Trans Rights are Human Rights

You see, theres this strange thing that happens with peer support. (Actually, there are many strange things, but only some of them relevant here.) Once someone has been designated a peer (a problematic term itself) within the psychiatric realm, theyre assumed to be a good match for just about any person receiving mental health services.

Will They Try to Make Us Pay for Breathable Air? Articles

Making Electricity Out of Thin Air

Bad news, folks. The scientists have discovered an enzyme that can be used to produce electricity out of thin air.

This was just discovered, so we dont know yet whether this can be scaled as easily as they hope, but it so this may very well be very good news for the owners controlling the energy industry but for us, useless breathers, this is not good news at all. After all, up until now, weve been breathing air. Just air. But now we are suddenly breathing a natural resource, and we all know how stingy the owners of everything are about those!

Hey, if you were a major investor in BlackRock or similarly minded self-appointed owner of assets, would this new discovery not motivate you to consider limiting the free inhaling capacity of the peasants? Those pesky peasants have been taking their breathing privilege for granted but really, should they not be a lot more considerate about their usage of a valuable resource that you turn into solid profits?

So, would you, as a dedicated BlackRock investor, not find it irksome that over nine billions freeloader breathers and carbon exhalers whom you dont really like! habitually suck up your air into their useless noses, without paying you a dime for the privilege of using air? Would you not, in the face of this exciting business opportunity, seek to change the way people think about breathing?

And maybe, right now it is an exaggeration. Maybe I am being dramatic. But my concern is not facetious at all because this is exactly how the owners of everything think about everything so why breathing would be an exception?

Come on, come on, the Blue Ocean Strategy! Come, new markets! Come, new income streams for the BlackRock investors! And away with irresponsible, unlimited use of air resources, formerly known as breathing!

Anyway, heres the science. On March 7, 2023, Nature published a paper titled, Structural basis for bacterial energy extraction from atmospheric hydrogen. The paper is a little dense, so here is a popular rendition:

The researchers looked at a common soil bacterium, Mycobacterium smegmatis. This bacterium uses hydrogen from the atmosphere as an energy source, especially in nutrient-poor environments. They found that the machinery that allows the microbe to turn atmospheric hydrogen into energy is an enzyme called hydrogenase, or Huc for short. They have also found that the process produces an electrical current.

The researchers were able to isolate the enzyme by genetically modifying the bacteria. They found that even when isolated from the bacteria, Huc could consume hydrogen at concentrations far lower even than the tiny traces in the air. They also found Huc was uninhibited by oxygen...

Mask Study Imploding Cochrane Collaboration in Latest Debacle Articles

The Cochrane Database of Systematic Reviews (CDSR) has long been considered a gold standard in research, as its reviews take into account all available empirical evidence to reach conclusions about any given topic. A systematic review is essentially a "study of studies," which can generate "authoritative and reliable information."1

Their reviews are then updated every few years to ensure they reflect the latest research2 and are considered valuable decision-making tools for researchers, health care workers and policy makers alike.

Unfortunately, Cochrane's unbiased reputation has been tarnished, and its editor in chief, Karla Soares-Weiser, appears to have sold out to the mainstream narrative, going so far as to throw her own researchers under the bus in the process. It all stems back to a study on masks one of the most controversial topics of the pandemic.

Cochrane Review Finds Masks Are Worthless

A team of researchers led by Tom Jefferson of the University of Oxford has been studying "interventions for the interruption or reduction of the spread of respiratory viruses" since 2006. Beginning in 2010, they began focusing on "physical interventions," including screening at entry ports, isolation, quarantine, physical distancing, personal protection, hand hygiene, face masks, glasses and gargling to prevent respiratory virus transmission.3

The review was updated in 2011, 2020 and again in 2023.4 The latest update added 11 new randomized controlled trials (RCTs) and cluster-RCTs, six of which were conducted during the COVID-19 pandemic, for a total number of 78 RCTs reviewed. In terms of medical and surgical masks, the team found "moderate-certainty evidence" that they're useless compared to no masks:5

"Wearing masks in the community probably makes little or no difference to the outcome of influenzalike illness (ILI)/COVID19 like illness compared to not wearing masks Wearing masks in the community probably makes little or no difference to the outcome of laboratoryconfirmed influenza/SARSCoV2 compared to not wearing masks."

Even in the case of N95 and P2 respirators, no clear benefit was found. In the study's plain language summary, it's noted:...

Have you had COVID-19 or received a COVID-19 injection? Then you likely have dangerous spike proteins circulating in your body. While spike protein is naturally found in SARS-CoV-2, no matter the variant, its also produced in your body when you receive a COVID-19 shot. In its native form in SARS-CoV-2, the spike protein is responsible for the pathologies of the viral infection.

In its wild form its known to open the blood-brain barrier, cause cell damage (cytotoxicity) and, as Dr. Robert Malone, the inventor of the mRNA and DNA vaccine core platform technology,1 said in a commentary on News Voice, is active in manipulating the biology of the cells that coat the inside of your blood vessels vascular endothelial cells, in part through its interaction with ACE2, which controls contraction in the blood vessels, blood pressure and other things.2

Its also been revealed that the spike protein on its own is enough to cause inflammation and damage to the vascular system, even independent of a virus.3

Now, the World Council for Health (WCH), a worldwide coalition of health-focused organizations and civil society groups that seek to broaden public health knowledge, has released a spike protein detox guide,4 which provides straightforward steps you can take to potentially lessen the effects of toxic spike protein. You can view their full guide of natural remedies,5 including dosages, at the end of this article.

Why Should You Consider a Spike Protein Detox?

Spike proteins can circulate in your body after infection or injection, causing damage to cells, tissues and organs. Spike protein is...

Its been over a week now since a bank has failed, but according to multiple sources, that does not mean that the banking crisis is over.

In fact, many sources are reporting that bank runs are continuing, with a second wave of bank runs now going on.

Services Needed for People Withdrawing From Antidepressants Mad In America

From Psychology Today/John Read, PhD: Two psychiatrists from University College London (Mark Horowitz and Joanna Moncrieff) and I have published the findings of our survey of 1,276 members of Facebook groups for antidepressant users from 49 countries, entitled Designing Withdrawal Support Services for Antidepressant Users: Patients Views on Existing Services and What They Really Need.

It is the second-largest international survey of antidepressant users ever conducted. It found that the majority (71 percent) experience their prescribing doctor as unhelpful when it comes to supporting their efforts to withdraw. Most doctors were uninformed about withdrawal symptoms and therefore denied their existence and/or recommended withdrawal much too quickly.

The services that patients would have found very useful but had been unable to access include:

  • Smaller doses (e.g., tapering strips, liquid, smaller dose tablets) to ensure gradual reduction.
  • A health professional providing a personalised, flexible reduction plan.
  • A telephone/online, video/online chat helpline.

Our study concluded: Our findings indicate, in keeping with previous studies, that clinicians require upskilling in safe tapering of antidepressants and that patients need specialised services to help them stop safely.

These recommendations, by hundreds of patients who have been badly let down by their doctors, precisely echo the recommendations of the comprehensive Public Health England report in 2019. However, the NHS has still not put in place a single specialised withdrawal service, helpline, or training programme for doctors. Meanwhile tens of thousands of people are turning to Facebook groups all over the world for support and guidance, to fill the void left by mainstream services.

One small error for a physicist, one giant blunder for planetary science Retraction Watch

For a decade, scientists have been scratching their heads when trying to put a date on primeval events like the crystallization of the magma ocean on the moon or the early formation of Earths continental crust.

Their problem? A revised estimate of the half-life of a radioactive isotope called samarium-146 that is used to gauge the age of ancient rocks.

The updated value, published in 2012 in Science, shortened samarium-146s half-life by a whopping 35 million years, down to 68 million years from the standard estimate of 103. This reset the clock on the solar systems early history and suggested the oldest rocks on Earth could have formed tens of millions of years earlier than previously thought.

It means everything was forming more quickly, Michael Paul (pictured) of the Hebrew University of Jerusalem, a coauthor of the Science paper, told New Scientist at the time.

But as researchers began using the new half-life in their calculations, their results turned out not to match those obtained with other so-called isotopic clocks. The ensuing uncertainty led many to take a belt-and-suspenders approach, using both the old and the new half-life estimates, according to Richard W. Carlson, staff scientist emeritus at the Carnegie Institution for Sciences Earth & Planets Laboratory.

As dating methods improved, the discrepancy when using the 68-million-year half-life was becoming clear, Carlson, who was not involved in the Science study, told Retraction Watch.

The confusion may be down to a lab error, it now appears.

According to Paul, he and his colleagues were recently alerted to an inconsistency in their paper by an independent group that asked not to be identified. (Paul would not provide any specifics unless we shared our story ahead of publication, which in the interest of editorial integrity we refused to do.) He told us that the finding:

State College Borough Water Authority will cease fluoridation at the end of the month Fluoride Action Network

By the end of the week, the State College Borough Water Authority will completely stop adding fluoride to its water.

The SCBWA previously estimated its last day of adding fluoride to the water would be at the end of March and a public notice confirmed that time frame. According to the notice on the SCBWAs website, fluoridation will cease on March 31.

It is important to note that this will in no way affect the quality of the water. The water will continue to meet all DEP drinking water regulations without the addition of fluoride, the notice on the website states.

The SCBWA submitted its application to have the public water supply permit amended to the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection in October 2022, the notice states. The application requested to discontinue adding fluoride to the drinking water supply and was approved in January.

In a move that drew controversy and local health officials speaking out in opposition, the authority voted in July 2022 to end water fluoridation. Though its added fluoride since 1954, SCBWA is in the minority for the area, Brian Heiser, State College Borough Water Authoritys executive director previously told the CDT. In Centre County, only one other water system adds fluoride to the water, he said.

In a previous interview, SCBWA Chair Jeff Kern said the board spent a significant amount of time studying peer reviewed, scientific journal articles that were published in recent years on the topic.

They led the board to believe that it was more appropriate for us to not deliver fluoride than to deliver fluoride through the water. And the rationale was, I think, most toothpaste and mouthwashes have fluoride in them. Most dentists give fluoride treatment to kids and adults. And, lets face it, a whole lot of people are drinking bottled water, theyre not drinking our water anyway. Theyre using it for other purposes, Kern said. So I dont know how much fluoride some of those people who drink bottled water all day are getting.

Before the SCBWA voted, the board heard from a number of local dentists and medical health professionals who advocated for fluoridation. They said for some, fluoride in the water is the only type of dental prevention people have. If fluoridation were to end, the amount of cavities will increase in some patient populations, and it will impact the young, the old and the medically compromised the most, they argue...

Medically-Assisted Suicide Is Not a Win for Mental Health Mad In America

In recent years, medically assisted suicide programs have become popular in countries all over the world, with European countries seeming to lead the way. Euthanasia, assisted suicide, and non-resuscitation upon request are all slightly different procedures for the general idea of the medical system assisting people who qualify to end their lives in allegedly painless ways when they decide its time.

One of the main arguments Ive heard for medically assisted suicide is death with dignity. If you have a terminal illness that will render you unable to care for yourself and need 24-hour care, you might want to choose not to burden your family or loved ones with that task and say goodbye while you still have your faculties. Of course, you wouldnt have to do so; it would simply be an option for those who are facing unrelievable suffering at some point. This sounds fine, like it preserves choice and honors the autonomy of the individual to choose what to do with their own life, though I will say that spending time with those having experiences the medical system would call dementia has trained me not to make assumptions about what people would or would not choose.

There is one particular womanwell call her GraceI have had the pleasure of getting to spend time with on a few occasions these past couple of years. Grace is my longtime friends elderly mother, diagnosed with a rare form of dementia a few years ago. Her cognitive decline has been uneven but decidedly downward; shes unsteady on her feet, struggles to find words and finish thoughts, and is disoriented enough that she shouldnt be left alone for longer than it takes to go to the bathroom. But her spirit remains bright as ever. I didnt know Grace when she was young, but my friend says there are even new parts of her personality coming out around me that he doesnt remember seeing when he was young. I realize that the plural of anecdote is not proof, but Grace is an absolute delight; it...

This Might Be Your Last Chance to Save Homeopathy Alliance for Natural Health USA Protecting Natural Health

The FDA has claimed the authority to remove any homeopathic medicine from the market whenever it wants to. We need to take immediate action to make sure homeopathic medicines survive. Action Alert!

Last year, we explained the significance of the FDAs new policy regarding homeopathic medicines. Technically speaking, the agency has declared that no homeopathic medicines are legally on the market, meaning they can pull any product they want to, whenever they want to. This is an existential threat to homeopathy. Alongside our allies, were working to get language added to an appropriations bill preventing the FDA from attacking homeopathic medicines that meet existing safety and manufacturing standardsbut we need grassroots support to further this effort.

As we explained in our previous coverage, the FDAs new policy gives the FDA the authority to remove any homeopathic medicine they want, whenever they want to. The FDAs policy explains that they will generally focus enforcement against certain subsets of products, such as those with safety concerns, products with routes of administration other than oral or topical, products to treat serious or life-threatening conditions, products for vulnerable populations, and products with significant quality issues.

This FDA policy guidance is a serious threat to homeopathic medicines because it sets the stage for the agency to remove homeopathic medicines easily and with very little evidence or support. Why? Because the agency argues in the guidance that by the letter of the law, homeopathic medicines are currently being sold illegally because they have not been generally recognized as safe and effective (GRAS/E), nor have they gone through FDA approval as new drugs. So, if it wants to, the FDA now has the legal authority to remove any homeopathic medicine from the market.

The appropriations language we are supporting would prevent the FDA from removing homeopathic medicines simply because they havent been recognized as GRAS/E or approved as new drugsan impossible standard for homeopathic medicines since many of them are hundreds of years old and not patentable like new-to-nature drugs are. The huge investment it takes to get a product through FDA approval cannot generally be recouped in the case of homeopathy. The language would allow the FDA to pursue enforcement actions only against products that actually violate existing manufacturing and lab...

Victory! More Transparent Meat Labels Coming Alliance for Natural Health USA Protecting Natural Health

A new rule will close a loophole that allows fraud in meat labeling. It needs our support. Action Alert!

Many of us look for the Product of USA sticker on the meat we buy in the supermarket, but we may not be aware that, for years, the USDA has allowed meat raised outside the US to carry that label. Its a shameful case of government-sanctioned fraud. After significant pushback from ANH-USA and other consumer advocates, the USDA has issued a proposed rule that would fix this problem. This is a major victory, but we need to help this rule across the finish line.

As we explained previously, current USDA policy allows foreign meat to be imported to the US and carry the Product of USA label if it passes through a USDA-inspected plant. The USDA loophole allows foreign multinational corporations to disguise their products and take advantage of the lucrative US market. Theres good reason to believe that this loophole also violates the federal governments own policies that prohibit false or misleading labeling.

Under the proposed rule, meat products derived from live animals imported into the U.S. for feeding or immediate slaughter could no longer use Product of USA or Made in the USA labels. Likewise, imported meat products reprocessed in the U.S. could no longer claim they are a Product of USA or Made in the USA.

Not only does the current rule allow blatant fraud; there are also safety concerns. Take mad cow disease for example, which was a real concern a number of years ago. Millions of cattle were infected with the disease in the UK in the early 1990s, prompting a ban on the importation of beef from that country. Other safeguards were put in place by the USDA to prevent mad cow from entering the food supply....

Book ReviewDesperate Remedies: Psychiatrys Turbulent Quest to Cure Mental Illness Alliance for Natural Health USA Protecting Natural Health

From Ronald Hoffman, MD

For centuries, medicine has grappled with psychiatric illness, wielding a variety of techniques. Nevertheless, success has been at best marginal; a recent study of antidepressants and psychotherapy in the treatment of major depressive disorder has shown a response rate of just 24%. For schizophrenia and psychosis, the results have been even more abysmal. Random violence and rampant homelessness attest to the pervasiveness of unaddressed psychiatric disorders; childhood and adolescent anxiety, depression, and behavioral disorders are soaring in prevalence.

For those patients who obtain relief from modern psychiatric drugs, its often partial and transient, and comes at the cost of life-impairing side effects.

But todays therapies are benign by comparison with some of the barbarities perpetrated in the past on persons suffering from mental illness. Andrew Scull has provided us with a meticulously-researched history of these desperate remediesand its a cautionary tale about the extremes to which medical hubris can lead us, with true contemporary relevance.

The underlying theme of Desperate Remedies is that the psychiatric profession has gyrated from one misguided treatment paradigm to another, culminating in its current infatuation with psychopharmacology, often with disastrous results. Its a true illustration of how blind zeal for cures has led to terrible excesses, not just in psychiatry, but in all arenas of medicine.

Until the mid-20th Century, people with mental disorders were confined to asylums, where conditions were horrific. Patients were warehoused there with little hope of recovery. Straightjackets, padded cells, beatings, forced immersion in tubs of ice water, and sexual abuse were rampant.

With the popularization of Darwins evolutionary theories of survival of the fittest, the notion developed that the insane represented a form of hereditary degeneracy. On the contrary, sophisticated modern gene-mapping has been hard put to find one or even a constellation of genes that make people schizophrenic or depressive. But 19th and early 20th Century eugenicists became convinced that the human bloodline should be purged of inferior stock. This led to mass (involuntary) sterilization in asylums and was the antecedent to the Nazis extermination of life unworthy of life; Hitler drew his inspiration from America.
