New Jersey Legislative Bill A. 5493 would require metrics for assessing nursing home operations to include a requirement for nursing homes to report the number of residents who have received Covid-19 and annual flu shots.

This bill revises the requirements for taking action against low-performing nursing homes to include sanctions.  It will put pressure on nursing homes to have their residents vaccinated even if those residents do not wish to receive vaccines. 

Specifically, the bill requires the Department of Health (DOH) to develop standards in three categories encompassing:

• the physical well-being of residents
• the mental well-being of residents
• the nursing homes operational metrics 

The Weston A. Price Foundation is opposed to the section that requires the metrics for assessing operations to include the number of residents who receive SARS-CoV-2 and seasonal influenza shots.

We do not take a position on other sections of the bill that do not relate to vaccines.

AB 5493 was introduced and referred to the Assembly Health Committee on 5/11/2023. It is sponsored by Assemblywoman Angela McKnight.
