The experts are once again blaming climate change for the spread of a tick-borne illness that causes brain swelling. Doctors recorded the first confirmed case of tick-borne encephalitis virus acquired in the United Kingdom in 2022.

According to a report by Grist, tick-borne encephalitis, or TBE, is a potentially deadly disease that experts like to say is spreading into new regions due in large part to global warming. The report claims that studies have shown that several tick-borne illnesses are becoming more prevalent because of climate change. Public health officials are particularly concerned about TBE, which is deadlier than more well-known tick diseases such as Lyme due to the way it has quickly jumped from country to country.

Not long ago, the media was warning of Cimean Congo Hemorrhagic Fever spreading in Europe and that it would likely reach the United Kingdom. The fear-mongering seems to have abated over CCHF, which is also a tick-borne illness.

Gbor Fldvri, an expert at the Center for Ecological Research in Hungary, said the effects of climate change on TBE are unmistakable. Its a really common problem that was absent 20 or 30 years ago. He added: The number of overwintering ticks is increasing, and in spring there is high activity of ticks, said Gerhard Dobler, a doctor who works at the German Center for Infection Research. This may increase the contact between infected ticks and humans and cause more disease.

Ticks cant survive more than a couple of days in temperatures below zero, but theyre able to persevere in very warm conditions as long as theres enough humidity in the environment. As Earth warms on average and winters become milder, ticks are becoming active earlier in the year. Climate change affects ticks at every stage of their life cycle egg, six-legged larva, eight-legged nymph, and adult by extending the length of time ticks actively feed on humans and animals. In another alarming episode of law enforcement brutality, a Los Angeles County Sheriffs deputy was caught on camera punching a mother who was holding her infant during a traffic stop in Palmdale, a suburb northeast of Los Angeles, in July 2022. Sheriff Robert Luna has condemned the incident as completely unacceptable, and the deputy involved, whose name has yet to be released, has been taken off field duty and disciplined allegedly.

The shocking body cam footage reveals a tense scene, with five officers surrounding the woman as she refuses to hand over her child, saying, Youre all gonna have to shoot me dead before you take my baby.

Unforgivably, one male deputy responds to her desperation by throwing two punches at her head. Eventually, the officers took the baby and put the woman in handcuffs.

According to the department, the incident began as a traffic stop when officers saw four females and three infants in a vehicle, none of whom were in car seats. The male driver was arrested for DUI and driving with a suspended license. The women, including the mother who was punched, were not charged although they were initially held on suspicion of child endangerment for not having the children in car seats.

Unironically, the officer protected the baby from her mothers lack of a car seat by punching the mother, which couldve caused her to drop the infant.

I still believe this is an isolated incident that was committed by an individual that will be held accountable, make no mistake about that, Luna said Wednesday.

While Luna believes this incident is isolated, history and evidence suggest otherwise. This horrifying incident isnt an anomaly, but rather part of a chilling pattern of police aggression towards individuals holding children or babies.

In another incident, a police officer in Broward County, Florida, attacked and choked an innocent father as he held his baby in 2019. Kiyosaki, who predicted the collapse of Lehman Brothers in 2008, said he does not play the stock or bond markets himself, as he prefers hands on control too much.

He did not detail why he expects stocks to plummet in his latest tweet. Earlier, however, he predicted that the US Federal Reserve would raise interest rates to rein in runaway prices, and warned that this, in turn, would cause stocks, bonds, real estate, and gold to crash.

He has so far been proven correct, as the country has faced its worst inflation in decades over the past several months, which prompted the Fed to implement a series of interest rate hikes. The rate is currently 5% to 5.25%, up from 0% in early 2022. -RT

Why Government Pollution Control Fails SHTF Plan

In over twenty-five years of teaching undergraduate students, I have heard the same refrain countless times: free markets have many problems that government has to step in to solve. Indeed, students expect the government to step in so much that markets occupy a peripheral role in their idealized economic system. Even students with an ideological predilection toward markets will be quick to argue that certain problems, such as pollution, require extensive government regulation and probably copious spending of tax dollars.

This is not surprising, given that college students have been bombarded by tales of government fixes for social problems from media, teachers, and parents from elementary school onward. By the time they hear about market failure in their first economics class, it doesnt take much convincing that free markets are impractical at best and a weak rationale for capitalist exploitation at worst. The best-selling economics textbooks at the university level do little to counter these perceptions, and most instructors wont deviate much from the mainstream books.

Most principles of microeconomics and intermediate microeconomics textbooks devote at least one chapter to market failure, which typically includes market power (think monopoly), inadequate provision of public goods (goods that the private sector allegedly wont produce enough of because of an inability to make the users pay), and externalities (the unintended side effects of human activity on bystanders, like pollution). While textbooks usually contain some acknowledgment of the fact that governments dont live up to idealized models of efficiency, it is rare for proportional space to be devoted to government failure and easy for students to conclude that government intervention is the answer to these nearly ubiquitous shortcomings of markets.

The Apologists for Environmental Regulation

The problems with monopoly theory and the errors of mainstream thinking about public goods have been dealt with elsewhere. In my experience, externalitiestypically, environmental problemshave proven one of the most difficult challenges for students trying to understand markets and government. Dont pollution problems require government intervention?

Typically, the section on externalities contains a few diagrams showing the difference between private costs (or benefits) and social costs (or benefits). The diagram for negative externalities usually looks something like Figure 1, with the marginal private cost (MPC), marginal social cost (MSC), and marginal private benefit (MPB). Students are then directed to observe the difference between the optimal quantity of output (Q*) of the good that results in the negative...

What to Do When Your Adult Children Refuse to Prep The Organic Prepper

Its the same old conversation again. You know the one Im talking about. That one you have with your adult kids (often in their 20s and 30s) about how they need to start prepping. How they really should have a little extra food in the pantry, a little water set aside, and for heavens sake, if they can afford it, that emergency fund would be a lifesaver.

And yet, the conversation ends how it always ends. An eye roll, a flippant comment about how the world isnt ending and everything is fine and that youre being crazy or overdramatic.

Sound familiar? If you have adult kids or even anyone in your life who takes a similar stance, you know how insanely frustrating these conversations can be. To you, its common sense. Why wouldnt you prep, because, after all, you never know what will happen?

Sometimes its all about the stigma

Ill be honest, Ive been on the eye-rolling side of this conversation many time. Just ask my mom, Daisy. I think a large part of it has to do with the stigma. When the general public hears words like prepping or preppers or preparedness, theyre picturing gas-mask-wearing bunker-dwelling survivalists, they imagine scenarios like the 90s movie Blast from the Past or that TV show Doomsday Preppers.

Pop culture and media like to show the more extreme side of prepping because its interesting, its different, they can glamorize it, and it gets and keeps people talking. Just not in a good way.

Its the stigmatization like this that keeps people from even considering prepping, let alone actually doing it.

I dont see what I do as prepping

Ill be honest, when I think of my day-to-day living, I dont use the word prepping. I dont see myself as a prepper. That is the Gods honest truth. At the same time, I do know that if something were to happen, I would be okay. Just because I dont call myself a prepper doesnt mean Im not prepared.

Here are the preps I pretty much always have:

I have a supply of water in jugs, enough to get my household through a lengthy storm because, living on well water, if the power goes out, which happens at least every month or two, I have no running water.
My pantry is stocked with enough shelf-stable food to get me through a reasonable period of time. I live in a cold, snowy climate so I have to be ready to be snowed in.
I have a pretty decent first aid kit that covers all the basics, and I also have a first aid and CPR handbook sitting on my shelf (from the last time I was first...
