Why Are Prenatal Diabetes Tests Taking Place Too Late? Fiona Peacock BellyBelly

Gestational diabetes is a type of diabetes that affects women during pregnancy, prenatal diabetes tests help to identify this early.

Women who suffer from gestational diabetes have an increased risk of developing Type 2 diabetes in later life.

Gestational diabetes is believed to affect as many as one in five women during pregnancy.

If left untreated, the condition can be serious, causing complications such as stillbirth. But when managed well, problems are much less likely.

Why does prenatal diabetes tests occur so late in pregnancy?

Leading scientists are now warning prenatal diabetes tests are occurring too late during pregnancy.

Screening usually takes place around 28 weeks to determine whether the mother has developed gestational diabetes. However, a recent study concluded that 28 weeks was too late, in many cases.

The University of Cambridge study looked at over 4,000 women and found that, in many cases, at 28 weeks, the developing baby had already been affected by gestational diabetes. Gestational diabetes causes an increase of sugar in the mothers bloodstream, and this can lead to a babys rapid growth inside the womb.

Mothers with gestational diabetes are more likely to have large babies. During birth, larger babies suffer increased risks, such as bone fractures. Bigger babies might also be at a higher risk of obesity and diabetes in later life.

The new study published in the journal Diabetes Care found that excessive fetal growth had often already kicked in by the time the prenatal diabetes tests occurred around week 28. Women who tested positive for gestational diabetes at 28 weeks were twice as likely to give birth to big babies when compared with other women.

Current guidelines state that screening should occur between Weeks 24 and 28. Screening is most commonly carried out at 28 weeks, during a routine prenatal appointment. This study, however, raises the question as to whether 28 weeks is too late.  More research is needed to pinpoint the optimal time for the screening to be carried out.

A Smorgasbord Blab about Postpartum Hemorrhage Indie Birth

I did a new thing this past week, which is I recorded this podcast live on Youtube. Youll hear other peoples questions, and some more thoughts and pondering on how to label postpartum hemorrhage, the rates of hemorrhage in my own practice (hint; its super duper low) and other ideas to consider when excess bleeding []

I know that guy! Thats Marc Tessier-Lavigne! Hes about my age, and we shared similar interests we were both interested in axon guidance, and I followed his work avidly some years ago. He was publishing about netrins, signaling molecules that affect the trajectory of growing neurons, while I was studying growing neurons in grasshopper embryos. I met him several times, I attended talks he gave at various meetings, it was hard to avoid Tessier-Lavigne.

Our careers followed very different paths, though. I ended up teaching at a small liberal arts college, while he got a position at UCSF, and then was CSO at Genentech, and then was president of Rockefeller University, was on the boards of various pharmaceutical companies, and finally was president of Stanford University. He was a major go-getter, running gigantic factory-style labs, getting regularly published in Science and Nature and Cell. It was a life that looked horrible to me, just as my life of obscurity and teaching would have looked horrible to him, if ever he had deigned to notice me.

Why would I have disliked the prestigious path he took in science? Because he turned himself into a manager, a guy who was disconnected from the science that was being done in his massively well-funded labs. Ick. Id rather play at the bench and help students get enthusiastic about doing science.

I may have chosen wisely, because now Tessier-Lavigne has been compelled to resign as an investigation found evidence of fraud in his work. Yikes. This is bad.

The Board of Trustees inquiry stopped short of accusing Tessier-Lavigne who has been Stanfords president since 2016 of fraud, saying theres no evidence he personally engaged in research misconduct.

However, it was concluded that five papers on which Tessier-Lavigne was a principal author included work from some members of labs overseen by Dr. Tessier-Lavigne who had either engaged in inappropriate manipulation of research data or engaged in deficient scientific practices, resulting in significant flaws in those papers.

When the issues emerged, Tessier-Lavigne took insufficient steps to correct mistakes in the scientific record, the boards report said.

This is what happens when you become an over-worked administrator with your fingers in too many pies. That does not excuse him he has his name on so many papers, and getting a...

Neonatal exposure to bisphenol analogues disrupts genital development in male mice. "IndyWatch Feed Health"

PMID:  Environ Pollut. 2023 Aug 1 ;330:121783. Epub 2023 May 8. PMID: 37164221 Abstract Title:  Neonatal exposure to bisphenol analogues disrupts genital development in male mice. Abstract:  The public concern and governmental regulations on bisphenol A (BPA) have stimulated the development and production of alternative analogues to replace BPA in a myriad of applications. Given the endocrine disrupting activities of BPA and potentially other analogues, the present study investigated and compared the effects of neonatal exposure to BPA, BPB, BPE, BPF, and BPS on the genital development in male mice. Pups were injected subcutaneously on the right shoulder in the mornings of postnatal days P0.5, P2, P4, and P6, resulting in a low dose of 0.05 g/g body weight (bw)/day and a high dose of 10 g/g bw/day. Mice were sacrificed at predetermined time and evaluated for gene expression levels (3 days after birth or P3), steroid hormone levels (P5), and morphological changes (P21). The results demonstrated that BPA, BPB, BPE, or BPF significantly shortened glans penis length and anogenital distance, while BPS didn't. Testis weight and anogenital distance were also significantly affected by BPA, BPE or BPF. The results also revealed that bisphenol analogues exposure significantly reduced testosterone levels, and altered the expression levels of developmental genes networks in developing penis of mice. Our data demonstrate that selected bisphenol analogues may possess similar endocrine disrupting effects compared to BPA, and exposure to these analogues could affect reproductive development of male mice. This raises the concern on the environmental and health safety of bisphenol analogues applied as industrial BPA replacements.

Progress in embryo analysis! "IndyWatch Feed Nthamerica"

Our new development in spider development is pretty basic stuff. Were dechorionating embryos! That is, stripping off a thin membrane surrounding the embryo, so we can do staining and fixation and various other things. Its a standard invertebrate technique it turns out you can remove it by just washing them in bleach. Look, it works! This is a Parasteatoda embryo.

Were still tinkering with the timing of the treatment. Five minutes is way too long, which basically dissolved the whole embryo. All it takes is a brief wash to break the chorion down. Were also working out methods for manipulating them theyre tiny! Just pipetting them into a solution is a great way to lose them. Were now using a cut off microfuge tube to make a cylinder that we cap with a sheet of fine nylon mesh, to lower them into the solution. Of course, then we have to separate the embryos from the mesh. Fortunately, we opened up one egg sac and 140 embryos rolled out, so we have lots of material to experiment on.

The next question is whether they survive our abuse. Weve got some of them sitting under a microscope, time-lapsing their response. Well see if they growor die and fall apart.

Can Men Take Prenatal Vitamins? | 5 Important Ingredients Fiona Peacock BellyBelly

When considering starting a family, many men become more conscious of their health. Some couples try to improve their health before trying for a baby. They might switch to a healthier diet, increase their exercise and focus on maintaining a healthy weight. Some men take prenatal vitamins to help things along.

Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommend women consume 4,000 mcg of folic acid each day for one month before becoming pregnant and through the first three months of pregnancy. Women start taking prenatal vitamins when they find out theyre pregnant; many begin taking them sooner.

If your partner is starting to take a daily vitamin containing folic acid, you might wonder whether you should take a daily supplement, too.

Keep reading to find out whether men should be taking daily vitamins while trying to conceive.

What are prenatal vitamins for men?

Male prenatal vitamins are designed to aid male fertility, improve sperm quality and ensure good reproductive health when trying to conceive. Unlike prenatal vitamins specifically designed for women, prenatal vitamins for men are not intended to be taken for the duration of the pregnancy.

When it comes to male health, the important work is done before conception.

Should men take prenatal vitamins?

Yes, men should take prenatal vitamins before conceiving a child. Thanks to science, we now know that male reproductive health plays a vital role in the time it takes to conceive. Men should take male fertility vitamin supplements to make sure they are as healthy as they can be when its time to have a baby.

Men shouldnt take traditional prenatal vitamins formulated for women, however, as they dont contain the right mix of vitamins and minerals to improve semen quality, protect sperm and improve sperm fertility. Prenatal vitamins for women often contain iron, which can cause digestive problems and is best avoided unless needed.

When should I start taking a mens prenatal vitamin?

Men should begin taking prenatal or fertility vitamins as soon as they decide to start trying for a baby. Ideally, you should start taking prenatal vitamins a few months before trying to conceive. The sooner you start taking male fertility supplements, the longer they will have to work.

It is thought to take about 74 days to create sperm from start to finish. That means your health at 74 days before conception plays a vital role in sperm health. In an ideal world, you would start taking supplements to support male fertility at least 74 days before conception.

The timing wont always work out, but its worth taking supplements when you plan to start a family.

Seven useful words for the birth room Dr Sara Wickham

When Nadine Edwards and I were updating Birthing Your Placenta, she reminded me of some really useful words for the birth room.

Its a phrase thats useful for almost anyone who cares about the decision-making autonomy of birthing women.

That might include partners, family members or friends, midwives, doctors, student midwives or doulas.

Anyone, in fact, who might be present during labour or birth.

The main reason this sentence is useful is because of something that happens frequently in birth rooms and often feels difficult.

Someone suggests something to the woman which you know contradicts something that was in her birth plan.

You suspect she might not really want it, and/or that might not be in her best interests.

You may or not be right, of course, and you know she might have changed her mind, but youve got the womans interests at heart and want to check.

But the woman is in the middle of labour or birth.

Maybe shes feeling vulnerable, or tired, or in pain.

Or all of the above.

She might not feel as able to express her wishes as well as usual. She might not have even heard the question, or realised its implications.

You want to help, but you dont want to undermine the person who has asked her, and you want to keep a good atmosphere in the room.

What could you...

They Tried To Censor The Sound Of Freedom With An Air Horn "IndyWatch Feed Nthamerica"

There I was sitting in the movie theatre trying to watch Sound of Freedom, when I heard the sound of an air horn.

Bwaam! Bom-bom-bom-bom-bwaam!

Jim Caviezel, who plays Tim Ballard, the agent who saves the children, had just appeared. I could not believe what I heard. But there it was again.

Bwaam! Bom-bom-bom-bom-bwaam! Bwaam!

Certainly, someone in the theatre would stop this sound. Others would complain and tell the staff to figure out who or what was making that noise.

I had read reports about theatre chains across America that were censoring this movie. So many businesses have fallen for the Biden Mafias wokification and antifa mobology. I thought of this suppression.

As Jim Caviezel was pretending to be a pedophile (Jim is not one, and I can tell cause I can look at someone and know), I heard the sound once more.

Bwaam! Bom-bom-bom-bom-bwaam! Bom-bom-bom! Bwaam!

Each time it lasted a bit longer. Nobody in the theatre moved. I dont know how they could think this was part of the movie.

Someone, perhaps a theatre manager or a shapeshifting chaos agent deputized by Hunter Biden, was behind it. I knew I was being targeted because of my recent posts on Twitter warning everyone that Kamala Harris has replaced Joe Biden with Doug, her husband, and he wears Bidens face. (We dont really ever see Doug and Joe together.)

Normally, at this WMV theatre in Sunnydale, California, a person will check on how the movie is doing. They did not send anybody. After I jotted down some notes about the child sex club in Thailand (for a project), I went to get a manager.

What I told the front desk was that there was an infiltrator trying to drive people away from the movie. The infiltrator especially wanted anyone who was open to learning about criminal pedophile rings to leave. Anyone who was closed off to this issue would not hear the blare of the horn.

There are all kinds of scientific studies about how you can condition people to pick up certain auditory sensations. It can be different if you are a pedophobe. Or think about women with newborns who have just eaten the placenta after their birth.

I returned to my seat. The manager stood near the exit. Just as I expected whoever was making the noise was no longer doing it. Then the manager left, and I heard it again.

Bwaam! Bom-bom-bom-bom-bwaam! Bwaam!

Bwaam! Bom-bom-bom-bom-bwaam! Bom-bom-bom! Bwaam!

Bwaam! Bom-bom-bom-bom-bwaam! Bwaam!

Moving row to row, I tried to identify who the person was with the air horn. The theatre was not helpful. I wa...
