Can You Smell When Rain Is Coming? Science Says Some People Can and Some Cant "IndyWatch Feed Arts"

Can You Smell When Rain Is Coming? Science Says Some People Can and Some Cant

Smiling Girl Under the Rain

Photo: hquality/Depositphotos

Are you one of those people who can leave the house on a summer day and swear that you smell rain in the air? The world is firmly divided into two campsthose whose nose can detect when rain is on the way and those who think that capability is utter nonsense. While not everyone can smell the rain before it begins, there is actually scientific evidence that some people do possess this capability.

Those with good olfactory senses are often able to pick up a scent that has, according to Scientific American, a sweet, pungent zing that's been likened to chlorine bleach. This is owed to ozone, which can be emitted from things like fertilizer and paint, as well as natural sources. Ozone can be created by an electrical charge that signals an oncoming storm. Downdrafts from a thunderstorm can carry the ozone created at high altitudes down to ground level and into our noses. While humans' ability to smell ozone differs, there are people who can pick up on even slight traces and know that it's probably time to grab an umbrella.

Another term associated with the smell of rain is petrichor. This word refers to the potpourri of scents that arrives once rain has arrived. All that falling water kicks up lots of molecules that produce scents.  First coined in 1964 by mineralogists Isabel Joy Bear and Richard Thomas, petrichor happens when airborne molecules from decaying plants or animals settle onto the surface of rocks. When the rain comes and hits the surface, the water droplets burst and release these scents into the air.

XRP Ledger On Fire: Daily Transactions Skyrocket 10.7% In Q1 2023 "IndyWatch Feed Crypto"

According to the latest report by the research firm, Messari, the XRP Ledger (XRPL) saw a significant surge in activity during the first quarter of 2023. The daily active addresses and daily transactions increased by 13.9% and 10.7% QoQ, respectively.

XRPs price also showed an impressive increase of 56% quarter-over-quarter (QoQ), from $0.35 to $0.54. This price increase outpaced the total crypto market cap in the same period, largely due to positive news regarding the ongoing case between Ripple and the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC).

 XRP Ledger Network Activity Soars

The XRP Ledger is a blockchain network operational for over a decade. It is known for its fast and energy-efficient cross-border payment capabilities, among other features.

It offers a variety of native capabilities, including Issued Currencies, a decentralized exchange, escrow functionality, and token management. These features allow the XRPL to execute many of the same functions as other networks, even though it does not support smart contracts.

XRP

The chart above shows that the XRPL has seen a significant increase in overall network activity metrics in Q1. Daily active addresses and transactions increased by 13.9% and 10.7%, respectively. The increase in total active addresses was largely due to receiving addresses growing by 17.1% from 47,000 to 55,000. However, sending addresses decreased by 7.2% QoQ, further separating the metric from receiving addresses.

Despite 141,000 accounts being deleted in Q1, the total addresses increased. This is because, unlike many other blockchain networks, the XRPL allows accounts to be deleted to reclaim the deposit of XRP escrowed during account creation. This escrow incentivizes to delete of accounts, and the total address metric has more significance.

According to the report, the XRPL applies deflationary pressure to the total supply of 100 billion XRP through transaction fee burning. However, only around 10 million XRP have been burned since the XRPLs inception. To counteract this burn rate, 1 billion XRP vests to Ripple per month. Any XRP not spent or distributed by Ripple in that month is returned to escrow. This sy...

Poetic Drawings by Yuria Okamura Meditate on the Sacredness of Plants "IndyWatch Feed Arts"

A symmetric geometric and botanical drawing in blues, yellows, and reds

All images Yuria Okamura, shared with permission

Melbourne-based artist Yuria Okamura intertwines sacred geometries with medicinal botanicals in her delicate drawings and wall works. Evoking animism and the Buddhist and Shinto beliefs she encountered during her childhood in Japan, Okamuras renderings in pen and acrylic create sites for meditation and contemplation with symmetries, muted color palettes, and subdued, calming auras.

Often accompanying the smaller works on paper are large-scale patterns the artist draws on the walls surrounding the pieces to create immersive architectural installations. This pairing establishes a temple-like space for enshrining nature, she says, and together, the works emulate the quiet, reflective qualities of places of worship.

Some of Okamuras works shown here are on view through August 20 as part of Melbourne Now at NGV Australia. Find more of her exquisite renderings on her site and Instagram.

Luxury Resort in Bangkok Takes Design Cues From the Golden Age of Train Travel "IndyWatch Feed Arts"

Luxury Resort in Bangkok Takes Design Cues From the Golden Age of Train Travel

Khao Yai Resort in Bangkok, Thailand

If you're enthralled with the romantic notion of train travel, then the InterContinental Khao Yai Resort in Bangkok, Thailand, is the place for you. The resort invites you to explore the golden age of train travel through its idyllic accommodations and surrounding natural beauty. There are even upcycled train carriages included in the resort design.

The architectural scheme was created by architect and interior designer Bill Bensley. He was inspired by the areas history of rail transportation to Northeast Thailand during King Rama Vs Reign, which lasted from 1868 to 1910. Upon arrival, youll check in at an area styled like a ticket counter; it's complete with a traditional stationmaster bell that rings to welcome you. The interior is decorated with railway memorabiliathink vintage trunks and old tickets.

Once youve completed the check-in process, youll be escorted to one of the 45 rooms in Khao Yai Resorts main buildings. They too are inspired by train travel, and the walls are adorned with pieces recalling the vintage railway signs once seen around the province. Corridors with curved ceilings and doorways make you feel like youre stepping into a train car, and wall treatments in the bedrooms are meant to look like windows. The faux windows have landscape-inspired artwork that will make you feel like you're looking at the passing terrain.

The beauty of Bensley's design lies in its subtlety. It's often a wink to train travel, and it doesn't feel like you're staying in a themed room. Rather, you are treated to the elegance of a space that pays homage to the past without feeling cheesy.

In addition to the grand decor, Khao Yai Resort boasts curated experiences where you can visit Baan Sa Nam Sai, one of the oldest communities in the area. You can later enjoy a formal afternoon tea in a heritage railcar and then indulge in delicious farm-to-table dining at Somyings Kitchen with ingredients from local purveyors.

Governor Ridwan Kamil And Samson Mow Describe The Future Of Bitcoin In Indonesia At Bitcoin 2023 "IndyWatch Feed Crypto"

Governor of the Indonesian Province of West Java, Ridwan Kamil and prominent Bitcoin global advocate and JAN3 CEO Samson Mow, revealed in a fireside chat titled "The Indonesia Bitcoin Mining Campaign" that the government of Indonesia is researching various ways in which bitcoin adoption in the country could benefit its people.

Governor Kamil explained the specific environment that makes Indonesia a potential major player in the bitcoin mining space, saying [Indonesia has] the second most geothermal potential in the world more than 800 rivers with hydropower. As bitcoin allows the transformation of energy into money, bitcoin could be transformative for indonesia

He also explained that the country is already on a steady path towards adoption, with more than 12 million cryptocurrency investors, 70% of which are invested in bitcoin. According to Governor Kamil, this number grows by half a million a year.

In addition, the Governor touched on how bitcoin could bring financial technology to people in his country who currently do not have access to that. Bitcoin is a solution in my opinion to unbankable parts of my society, he explained. 40% of my people are unbankable.

Another topic touched on was the recent introduction of an Omnibus bill that allows for 100% foreign investment into renewable energy projects above 1 MW. This bill could lead to increased investment and attention in the region. Come to indonesia, lets have this big reserve of renewable energy dedicated to the bitcoin mining business, Governor Kamil said.

Mow touched on the opportunity at hand for Indonesia, saying that The first [countries] that adopt bitcoin in a meaningful way will have a big advantage. Afterwards, Governor Kamil inquired about the way that El Salvadors bitcoin bonds function. Mow replied that The bonds can finance the buildout of new energy infrastructure Indonesia could have a volcano bond too.

Overall, the talk indicated that Governor Kamil is cautiously optimistic, and that he sees bitcoin as a potential game changer for the economy of his country and the livelihood of his people. As a country with access to major amounts of renewable energy and large portions of the population unbanked, it is seemingly ripe for bitcoin adoption.

"The new generation is buying Bitcoin as a reserve," Governor Kamil concluded. Hopefully Indonesia will be a Bitcoin heaven in the future."

The Worlds Largest Payroll Providers Can Now Use Bitwage To Pay Employees In Bitcoin "IndyWatch Feed Crypto"

Bitwage, a leading provider of Bitcoin payroll and invoicing, has introduced a solution that allows employers to seamlessly connect their payroll providers to Bitwage's service. This development simplifies and ensures compliance for workers who wish to receive a percentage of their paycheck in Bitcoin, stablecoins or USD. Notably, this solution is compatible with various payroll providers, including ADP, Paychex, Paycom, Gusto, Trinet and many others.

According to a press release sent to Bitcoin Magazine, what sets Bitwage apart is its non-custodial experience, ensuring that employees receive their payments directly into the wallet of their choice, maximizing security and minimizing risk.

To implement this solution, companies need to sign up on the Bitwage platform and connect their payroll provider through the Bitwage Automated Connection. From there, Bitwage creates a custom, post-tax benefit on the payroll provider's portal, allowing employees to opt-in. Employees can then choose the amount they wish to be deducted from their paycheck and distributed through Bitwage.

With each pay cycle, Bitwage automatically generates a payroll for each employee based on their payroll preferences, extracting the necessary data directly from the payroll system. Employees can receive their payments directly into their preferred Bitcoin, crypto or stablecoin wallet or even as their local currency into their bank accounts.

Bitwage's CEO, Jonathan Chester, emphasized their mission to enable workforces to be paid in their preferred method, whether it's bitcoin or fiat. We recognize that crypto can be scary for employers, so to enable this mission, we are building out fully compliant solutions and removing the complexities and custodial risk of crypto from the equation, Chester said.

Shadow Canons: Danzy Senna and Andrew Martin Recommend "IndyWatch Feed Literature"

Snow on snow in Geneva, Switzerland, courtesy of jenny downing, CC BY 2.0, via Wikimedia Commons.

Over the last few years, Ive been reading unappreciated and erased novels by Black artists from the twentieth century. Theyve helped me think about the idea of illegibilityabout what the literary world has historically deemed too wild, complex, radical, experimental, or challenging to be included in the precarious and burgeoning Black canon. Im also interested in why some promising writers give up after only one or two books. What conditions are required to be a writer over a lifetime? Some of these forgotten novels have since been rediscovered, like Nella Larsens twenties classics and Fran Rosss 1974 Black feminist picaresque, Oreo. Others are still fairly unknown, like William Melvin Kellys dem and Willard Savoys Alien Land, his only novel, published in 1949, about mixed-race identity and passing. My most recent addition to this shadow canon is Alice Mills Newmans Francisco. Originally published by Ishmael Reeds press in 1974, its a California road-trip story about a Black woman artist, musician, and actress whose husband, the eponymous Francisco, is a Black indie filmmaker. Reading it, I can see how it rubs against that eras prescribed notions of uplift, chastity, and even Black feminism in its celebration of Black love, sensuality, and joy. It doesnt deal in the familiar tropes of trauma or alienation, and the female narrator is enthralled by her male lover at a time when narratives about Black men as a...

Aerial Elephant Rescue Team Saves a Truck Driver Trapped in a Raging River

Screenshots of video showing rescue of truck driver trapped in river in Kenya by a helicopter

Photo: Screenshots from Instagram

In Kenya, Sheldrick Wildlife Trust (SWT) is known for its conservation work, protecting the country's orphaned elephants and even providing them with vet care. Recently, their experience and assets helped them save a man who was in a very dangerous situation. A tanker truck driver happened to be making his way across the Galana Kulalu causeway when the heavy rain caused the river to overflow, rapidly trapping the vehicle and the man in raging waters.

Flooding is a constant threat during the rainy season, and it is often impossible to predict when or how quickly water levels will rise, writes SWT. While the driver was safe from the flow for a while, the sheer force of the river pushed the truck on its side. This caused the windshield to break, which in turn flooded the cabin. The man managed to escape and climb atop the vehicle, but the rising water levels were quickly engulfing the truck. It was only a matter of time until everything was submerged, and the distance from the riverbanksas well as the strength of the currentmade any rescue efforts via water impossible.

Fortunately, SWT was notified about the unfolding crisis, and its Aerial Unit rushed to the scene. The organization has a handy helicopter that they use in their elephant rescue missions. Relying on their knowledge and hoping for the best, they quickly came up with a rescue plan.

Brothers Taru and Roan Carr-Hartley flew to the scene, and it didn't take them long to spot the driver. Despite having been there for several hours, he had not given up hope. Approaching him wasn't easy; the wind and the force of the river created challenging flying conditions, and they also had to be careful with the tanker, as it was filled with gas.

Lidos ETH Deposits Reach Record High Amid Stagnant stETH Withdrawals "IndyWatch Feed Crypto"

Lido (LDO), the leading liquid staking derivatives (LSD) protocol, recently made waves in the crypto community by enabling staked ETH (stETH) withdrawals. Expectations were high as many anticipated a surge in stakers unstaking their ETH.

However, contrary to these predictions, Lido has witnessed a remarkable increase in ETH deposits, reaching a record-breaking level. This surge has also been reflected in the protocols native token which has recorded a rally of more than 20% in the past week.

ETH Deposits Soar to New All-Time High

Despite the introduction of stETH withdrawals, Lido experienced a surge in ETH deposits, defying expectations of widespread unstaking. On Friday, the platform witnessed a significant milestone as the total number of ETH deposited hit an all-time high.

ETH Staked on LSDs over time

According to data provided by Lido, an astounding 6,373,289 ETH is currently staked with Lido, equivalent to more than $11.5 billion. Interestingly, while ETH deposits on Lido continue to soar, stETH withdrawals have remained stagnant around the 450,000 ETH mark, as reported by data from Nansen.

It is worth noting that these withdrawal requests have yet to be processed, contributing to the overall stability of stETH withdrawals. This trend raises questions about the anticipated unstaking frenzy, prompting a closer examination of the factors influ...

Bitcoin Plunges Below $27,000 As Miners Show Signs Of Selling "IndyWatch Feed Crypto"

Bitcoin has now dipped below the $27,000 level as on-chain data shows the miners have possibly been selling the asset recently.

Bitcoin Miner Reserve Has Taken A Sharp Plummet Recently

As pointed out by an analyst in a CryptoQuant post, miners have taken out about 1,750 BTC from their wallets during the past day. The relevant indicator here is the miner outflow, which measures the total amount of Bitcoin that miners are transferring out of their wallets currently.

The counterpart metric of the outflow is called the inflow, and it naturally tracks the total number of coins going into the addresses of these blockchain validators.

Here is a chart that shows the trend in the Bitcoin miner outflow, as well as the inflow, over the last few weeks:

Bitcoin Miner Outflow

Whenever the miner inflow has a high value, it means that this cohort is depositing a large amount of Bitcoin into their wallets. Such a trend, when prolonged, can be a sign that the miners are accumulating right now. Naturally, this can have bullish implications for the price.

When the outflow is high, on the other hand, it suggests that a large amount of the asset is exiting from the supply of the miners. Generally, the main reason why these holders transfer their coins out of their wallets is for selling-related purposes, so this kind of trend can be bearish for the cryptocurrencys value.

In the above graph, its visible that the miner inflow has been at relatively low values during the past day, implying that these investors arent depositing any significant amounts to their wallets.

The miner outflow, however, has registered a pretty high spike in the same period. In total, around 1,750 BTC ($47 million) has exited the supply of the miners with this surge in the indicator.

Since there havent been any inflows to counteract these outflows, a net amount of the asset has now left the miners wallets. This would mean that if the outflows were made for selling purposes, a net bearish effect should appear on the price.

An indicator that helps better identify whether these transfers were for selling or not is the ...

Here Are The Steps You Need To Take To Disappear From the Internet "IndyWatch Feed Arts"

Theres no doubt about it, things are getting kind ofcreepy out there when it comes to identity theft, fraud, privacy, and our digital footprints.

And if youve been itching to erase your activity from the Internets memory, its suggested that you follow these steps.

Take a look and see if you want to do this for yourself.

Data broker websites.

This is a big one.

Your information has likely been sold to third parties by data brokers if youve bought things online, scanned QR codes, or given out your email address.

But every data broker has an option to opt-out, so you can Google your name to see which websites it shows up on and then you can go to each individual site and follow its directions about how to have your name removed from there.

Its also suggested that you visit sites such as Whitepages, Intelius, TruthFinder, Instant Checkmate, and PeopleFinders to see what information they have on you, as well.

Shiba Inu Sees Juicy Capital Inflows An Imminent Rebound in Sight? "IndyWatch Feed Crypto"

Shiba Inu (SHIB) has recently caught the attention of investors as its chart reflects a significant surge in capital inflows and buying pressure. These developments have left many speculators wondering if this positive momentum will be sufficient to initiate a much-anticipated price rebound.

With increased interest and activity surrounding Shiba Inu, all eyes are now focused on whether this surge in support will ultimately lead to a revitalization of the cryptocurrencys fortunes.

Shiba Inu Price Consolidation And Increased Capital Inflows

Shiba Inu, over the past few days, has witnessed relatively low volatility on higher timeframe price charts. From May 8 onwards, its price has oscillated within a range of $0.00000832 and $0.00000914, indicating a period of consolidation.

At the time of writing, CoinGecko reflects Shiba Inus price at a mere $0.00000871. In the past 24 hours, the cryptocurrency experienced a slight slump of 1.4%. The meme coin was up a very modest 0.3% over the course of the last seven days.

Despite the recent price consolidation, the daily charts CMF (Chaikin Money Flow) and RSI (Relative Strength Index) have shown notable upward movements in the past few days. The CMF suggests increased capital inflows, while the RSI indicates rising buying pressure.

SHIB Potential Rally Based On Fib Retracement, Market Conditions

To analyze the potential price movement of Shiba Inu, traders have utilized the Fibonacci retracement tool by placing it between the swing high of the first quarter (Q1) and the lows observed in December. This tool helps identify crucial levels based on the Fibonacci sequence.

If the current trend in SHIB continues and the overall macro environment conditions continue to improve, there is a possibility of a rally. This rally could lead SHIB to reach the 23.6% Fibonacci retracement level, which stands at approximately $0.00000967.

Fibonacci retracement levels are commonly used in technical analysis to identify potential support and resistance levels based on the historica...

High School Seniors in New Orleans Solved a 2,000-Year-Old Mathematical Problem "IndyWatch Feed Arts"

Kids today, huh?

And I mean that in a good way! An EXTREMELY good way!

Because if the majority of kids are anything like these two high school girls from New Orleans, the future is looking bright!

Calcea Johnson and NeKiya Jackson are Seniors at St. Marys Dominican High School in New Orleans and they recently presented new proof for a 2,000-year-old mathematical theorem known as the Pythagorean theoremwhich you might remember from your school days.

Johnson and Jackson were the only two high schoolers to present at the conference, which included math researchers from major universities across the United States.

The theorem has been judged to be impossible by academics for 2,000 years, but Johnson and Jackson presented their finding at a meeting of the American Mathematical Societys south-eastern chapter in Georgia.

Vacationing in New York City last summer, Anna Cramling, an International Chess Federation master swung by Washington Square Park, to see about scoring a pickup game with one of the regulars.

Her opponent, Jonny OLeary, a native New Yorker who learned the rules of the game from other Washington Square habitus while working maintenance jobs in the surrounding buildings in the mid-80s, is a garrulous sort, sharing his philosophy of life as the game proceeds.

Luckily he believes that the human interaction and the opportunity to learn make even losing games a winning proposition because Cramling whoops him pretty handily.

Flash forward a couple of seasons.

Cramling, bundled up in a parka and warm stocking cap, heads back to Washington Square with her mom in tow.

OLeary is more than willing to introduce the elder Ms. Cramling, now 60, to the Game of Kings. He loves teaching beginners, even if they have no money to put down. He is so eager to show her the ropes that he dictates four of her first five moves.

A Brief History of the Concept Album: From Woody Guthrie, to the Beatles and Pink Floyd, to Taylor Swift "IndyWatch Feed Arts"

Though Sgt. Peppers Lonely Hearts Club Band holds something of an honorary cultural position as the first concept album, the Beatles themselves didnt hear it that way. The term concept album, as defined by Polyphonic host Noah Lefevre in his new video above, denotes a set of tracks which hold a larger meaning when together than apart, usually achieved through adherence to a central theme. Despite being one of the finest collections of songs committed to a single vinyl disc in the nineteen-sixties, Sgt. Peppers does apart from its opening and closing tracks reflect few pains taken to assure a thematic unity.

Other contenders for the first concept album, in Lefevres telling, include Woody Guthries 1940 Dust Bowl Ballads, Frank Sinatras 1955 In the Wee Small Hours, Johnny Cashs 1959 Songs of Our Soil, and The Ventures 1964 The Ventures in Space. Part of the question of designation has to do with technology: we associate the album with the twelve-inch long-playing record, which didnt come on the market until 1948. (Dust Bowl Ballads had to sprawl across two 78 rpm three-disc sets.)

Bitcoin Shrimp Catch Soars To All-Time High Of 1.31 Million Coins Details "IndyWatch Feed Crypto"

Bitcoin (BTC) shrimp investors, affectionately dubbed the underdogs of the cryptocurrency world, are making waves in the market as they steadily accumulate the digital asset at an unprecedented rate.

These smaller investors, often overlooked in favor of institutional giants, have recently reached a significant milestone, with the total supply of Bitcoin held by them surging to an all-time high of 1.31 million coins.

This surge not only highlights the growing influence of retail investors in the volatile world of cryptocurrencies but also underscores their determination to ride the Bitcoin wave alongside their more affluent counterparts.

The Rise Of Bitcoin Shrimp Investors

According to data analytics firm Glassnode, these shrimp investors have surged to an all-time high (ATH) of 1.31 million coins. The continuous rise in their holdings highlights their growing influence and raises intriguing questions about the evolving dynamics within the Bitcoin ecosystem.

The data further reveals that shrimp investors are adding an average of approximately 26,000 Bitcoins to their cumulative holdings each month. This significant expansion is worth noting, considering that only 3.9% of trading days, equivalent to 202 days, have witnessed a larger monthly growth rate.

These statistics underline the sustained interest in Bitcoin among retail investors, who remain undeterred by its well-known price volatility.

The Shrimp Investor Effect On BTC Price Dynamics

Bitcoins price, as reported by CoinGecko, currently stands at $26,914, reflecting a slight 1.1% decline over the past 24 hours, while the cryptocurrency was up 1.4% over the last seven days.

Web3 Reinvented: Polygon Labs, Sequence Join Forces To Transform Infrastructure "IndyWatch Feed Crypto"

The Web3 industry offers a diverse range of services, creating a dynamic landscape for individuals. A notable development in this space is the recent partnership announcement by Horizon, the creators of Sequence, aimed at redefining Web3 infrastructure.

This collaboration has had a significant impact, particularly on Polygons governance token MATIC, which experienced a notable increase of nearly 3% within the past 24 hours. This bolstering of the infrastructure signifies a positive step forward for the Web3 ecosystem.

This development came a day after Polygons blog post detailing the release of the v0.9 Testnet for Polygons Supernets. Once the final release of Supernets is launched, this partnership will surely affect the dominance of Polygon in the Web3 space.

Web3: Scalability, Seamlessness For Developers On Polygon

The seamless integration of Sequences smart wallet and infrastructure stack on Polygon Supernets will pull business enterprises into the ecosystem. Polygon Supernets are custom-built blockchains for specific apps. The most important of these customizations is a custom blockspace, ensuring that the user experience isnt affected by bumps in activity on-chain.

Sequences all-in-one development stack is the main attraction for both developers and investors. It is a complete package, covering tokens and NFTs to SDKs, the stack will fuel on-chain development as the release of Polygon Supernets nears.

To further push growth, both Polygon and Sequence will offer credits to incentivize developers to build on the platform. In doing so, the strategic alliance will have a strong effect on how quickly the Web3 infrastructure will improve.

Population and Welfare: The Greatest Good for the Greatest Number "IndyWatch Feed Fertility"

That is a new paper by Peter J. Klenow, Charles I. Jones, Mark Bils, and Mohamad Adhami, reject its implications at your peril:

Economic growth is typically measured in per capita terms. But social welfare should arguably include the number of people as well as their standard of living. We decompose social welfare growth measured in consumptionequivalent units into contributions from rising population and rising per capita consumption. Because of diminishing marginal utility of consumption, population growth is scaled up by a value-of-life factor that substantially exceeds one and empirically averages around 2.7 across countries and over time. Population increases are therefore consistently the dominant contributor, and consumption-equivalent welfare growth around the world averages more than 6% per year since 1960, as opposed to 2% per year for consumption growth. Countries such as Mexico and South Africa rise sharply in the growth rankings once population growth is incorporated, whereas China, Germany and Japan plummet. We show the robustness of these results to incorporating parental time use and fertility decisions using data from the U.S., the Netherlands, Japan, and South Korea. The effects of falling parental utility from having fewer kids are roughly offset by increases in the quality of kids associated with rising time investment per child.

If you worry about fertility rates, do you not have to accept something like this framework?  Mexico underrated!

In general, I think people should visit the high population countries more.  For the pointer I thank Oliver Wang.

Bitcoin Price Topside Bias Vulnerable Unless It Surges Past $27,500 "IndyWatch Feed Crypto"

Bitcoin price is struggling below $27,500. BTC is now at risk of a downside break unless there is a close above the $27,500 resistance.

  • The price is trading below $27,200 and the 100 hourly Simple moving average.

Bitcoin Price Faces Resistance

Bitcoin price started a fresh decline below the $27,200 level. BTC even traded below the $26,550 support zone to set a new weekly low.

A low is formed near $26,345 and the price is now attempting a fresh increase. There was a move above the 23.6% Fib retracement level of the recent decline from the $27,492 swing high to the $26,345 low. It is now trading below $27,200 and the 100 hourly Simple moving average.

Natural stimuli, such as birdsong, may allow us to engage in soft fascination, which holds our attention but also allows it to replenish.

Who Goes to Frieze NY on a Thursday? "IndyWatch Feed Arts"

I visited this years edition of Frieze in New York City on a Thursday, which is a strange day to go to an art fair. These are followed by a Wednesday evening opening, meant for people who are also Very Important, But Clearly Not As Important. The regular people, those who have no connection to the industry and genuinely love art (bless them), or who want a good TikTok backdrop and a nice air-conditioned space to let their kids loose in, tend to visit the show on Friday or the weekend. Sandwiched between these two categories like a forgotten pickle is Thursday, the art-fair limbo day.

MATIC Surges Past Key Resistance Level: Can This Breakout Sustain? "IndyWatch Feed Crypto"

The MATIC price recently broke above a key resistance level, indicating a positive development. However, its price appreciation over the past week has been modest, with only a 2% increase. MATIC has remained close to a critical support line on its daily chart despite the breakout.

The technical outlook suggests that recovery might take some time as the bears dominate the price. Both demand and accumulation have decreased in the daily timeframe.

While MATIC currently sits above an important resistance, the absence of buyer support could lead to a significant loss in value before any recovery occurs on the daily chart.

If the bears exert further pressure, MATIC will likely resume sideways trading, fluctuating between $0.81 and $0.84. The uncertainty in the Bitcoin price movement, as it fluctuates from $27,000 and retraces from that level, has impacted altcoins, weakening their respective price action. The MATIC market capitalization has fallen, indicating a higher level of selling activity than buying activity.

MATIC Price Analysis: One-Day Chart

MATIC

At the time of writing, MATIC was trading at $0.86. It successfully surpassed the $0.84 resistance level in the short term, but buyer sentiment remained weak. The coins next significant resistance is $0.87, and breaching this level could initiate a recovery trend.

However, if sellers persist, the altcoin could drop toward $0.81 and potentially below $0.80. The key for the bulls to regain control of the price lies in MATIC, staying above $0.86 in the upcoming trading sessions. The trading volume of MATIC in the last session was low, indicating a lack of buying strength.

Brink Announces $1 Million Donation-Matching Campaign From Marathon Digital Holdings For Bitcoin Development "IndyWatch Feed Crypto"

On stage at the Bitcoin 2023 conference, Brink announced a matching campaign for donations from Bitcoin mining firm Marathon Digital Holdings to support the work of Bitcoin Core developers. Marathon will match donations made to Brink on a two-for-one basis for the duration of the conference, which ends on May 20, and then match donations one for one through the end of the year, up to $1 million total.

Were going to match dollar for dollar $500,000-worth of donations that Brink receives for Core developers. More importantly, we will donate two-for-one if you donate money during this conference, said Fred Thiel, Marathons CEO. So, if you believe in the importance of supporting Core development efforts then I strongly urge you (to) donate 50 cents, $1, whatever you can during the conference.

By committing to match all third-party donations up to an aggregate of $500,000 until December 31, 2023, Marathon hopes to advance Brinks support for the developers who maintain and upgrade Bitcoins code. Since 2020, Brink has supported numerous developers in their work to make Bitcon more accessible and advanced through grants, mentorship and education, including former lead maintainer Marco Falke, Lightning Network white paper author Tadge Dryja and Bitcoin Core PR Review Clubs Gloria Zhao.

We have nine developers in five different countries that are all independent developers funded by Brink, explained Mike Schmidt, the executive director of Brink. I think we would all agree that we would want this Bitcoin software thats powering all of this innovation on top to be better reviewed, better tested, better maintained, easier to run and more performant. So thats why at Brink we fund grantees that are spending upwards of 50% of their time on testing and reviewing the Bitcoin Core code, proposing changes to the Core codebase and basically making that software more secure.

Donations made to Brink through its website are now eligible for the match. Thiel framed the campaign as part of Marathons larger commitment to securing the Bitcoin network as a significant contributor of hash rate, the computing power that ensures Bitcoins immutability.

We believe that its the most secure protocol out there and we think we and the rest of the industry should do everything they can to support the developers and really foment as much activity in the space as possible, Thiel said.

The Dreams and Demons of Bob Thompson "IndyWatch Feed Arts"

When Bob Thompson (19371966) died in Rome at the age of 28, he had been painting for eight years. During that time, he completed more than 1,000 paintings. Few artists since his death have had a similar outpouring and, not surprisingly, almost none of them have sustained it for more than a decade. I can think of only two painters in the last 50 years who accomplished so much in such an abbreviated period: Jean-Michel Basquiat (19601988) and Matthew Wong (19842019). What connects these very different artists is not their biography, however, but the feeling of separateness they inventively expressed in their work.

A Rear View of Art History "IndyWatch Feed Arts"

As John Berger once said, Men look at women. Women watch themselves being looked at. The impulse to objectify women has become culturally ingrained to such a great extent that scientists at the National Institute of Health concluded in 2019 that choosing not to objectify women depletes our bodys self-regulatory system and decreases our performance in cognitive tasks. In other words, it is human nature to judge a womans body based on societal standards, and doing otherwise is literally bad for our health. But in the past century, artists of all genders have begun to approach the female body in new ways that challenge this attitude. No longer a passive body reduced to an instrument of pleasure for another person, the female figure is an autonomous woman.

This innate urge to sexualize and exploit the female body finds a new (and encour...

The 70s Are Back, Baby "IndyWatch Feed Arts"

Tucked into the third and fourth floors of an old building on Lower Manhattans Great Jones Street, an expansive gallery exhibition is paying homage to the 1970s. Running through Sunday, May 21, That 70s Show is a refreshingly free alternative to this weekends astronomically priced art fairs. It includes presentations by 21 galleries, all featuring work from the decade of the shag carpet.

The two upper-level loft spaces are part of Eric Firestone Gallery, which has its primary storefront a few blocks away on the same street. All three spaces are in Soho, the bohemian hub of 1970s New York. Now, the neighborhood is filled with tech-boom-era startups (have you ever heard of Face Gym, a facial massage parlor and skincare store outfitted like a workout space?), other luxury-adjacent storefronts, and global fashion chains. Once off the main drag, visitors walk through a low gate, buzz up to Eric Firestone Gallery, and ascend a creaky wooden staircase before arriving in the first of the two white galleries. Dating While Trans "IndyWatch Feed Arts"

In recent years, sociologists have given attention to hookup culture and other modern forms of dating. Too often, however, this discussion ignores the experiences of trans people, and occasionally it focuses too narrowly on the college campus, ignoring the current prevalence of dating apps among many age groups.

Rates of dating violence victimization from the video abstract of Garthe et al. (2021)

Focusing on trans experiences is especially important, as a 2021 study found that trans youth are twice as likely as cisgender women to have experienced physical dating violence, and fifty percent more likely to have experienced psychological dating violence. A 2023 study identified common experiences, most notably being fetishized and having to deal with others assumptions about trans people. Because Im a trans woman, people instantly assume that I must be this massive bottom, said one participant. Another participant, a trans man, reported similar experiences, saying I just felt like they werent talking to me. They were talking to an idea they had about me.

Other research has looked at trans peoples decisions to disclose their trans identity to prospective partners on dating apps. Most participants proactively and explicitly disclosed their identity, citing concerns about violence. One participant, who was genderfluid and lived in a rural area, mentioned that when meeting someone face-to-face from a dating app, they always thought, that person could be the person that kills me. Others, however, will engage in softer disclosure methods, such as showcasing different facets of their identity on apps that allow multiple profile pictures.

MicroBT Releases New Line Of WhatsMiner M50 Series At Bitcoin 2023 "IndyWatch Feed Crypto"

MicroBT, the Bitcoin ASIC manufacturer behind the WhatsMiner line of ASIC mining machines, unveiled its latest offerings at Bitcoin 2023 in Miami Beach. Dr. Zuoxing Yang, the founder and CEO of MicroBT, highlighted the importance of "High density, low noise, low failure rate and low maintenance ASIC machines bringing bitcoin mining to a new era.

The talk started with a roll of film focusing on the energy crisis, green energy and the role that bitcoin can play as a solution. It then posed the question: What matters more, mining or surviving?

I never stop thinking of better power solutions for bitcoin mining, Dr. Yang said.

MicroBT introduced three new models of the WhatsMiner M50 series: the air-cooled M50S++, the hydro-cooled M53S++, and the immersion cooled M56S++. These models offer impressive computing power ranging from 150 to 320 terahash/second (TH/s) respectively, with power efficiencies of 22 joules per terahash (J/TH).

Dr. Yang highlighted the heat collection capabilities of the mining rigs, which can be utilized for various purposes, such as space heating and industrial processes. He mentioned that the hydro-cooling mining rigs can reach outlet water temperatures of over 70 (158), enabling 2.4MW of power for a 40-foot container. Additionally, the immersion-cooling solution requires only 10L of oil per miner, demonstrating its efficiency.

He emphasized that every M56 miner only requires as low as 10L oil with our specified tank.

MicroBT's focus since its inception in 2016 has been the development of high-efficiency Bitcoin mining rigs. The company aims to support miners in adhering to Bitcoin's decentralization principles while prioritizing network stability. Dr. Yang emphasized MicroBT's commitment to working with partners to promote sustainable mining practices, zero-carbon emissions and social responsibility.

Photographer Moves to Iceland to Explore the Countrys Otherworldly Glacier Caves

Man in Icelandic Cave with Northern Lights in the Background

Inspired by the ice caves he encountered on his first trip to Iceland, photographer Ryan Newburn moved to the country and became a glacier guide. Now, he owns his own glacier tour company, which allows him to continue to explore these natural wonders and share them with the public. The photographs of his adventures give a remarkable glimpse of the frozen beauty of these caves. Often capturing a single figure exploring the icy environment, Newburn is able to juxtapose the scale of these giant caves against their explorers.

Continuously melting and reforming, the ice caves are a never-ending source of inspiration for the American photographer, who moved to Iceland 2018. Ice caves are some of the most surreal and unique places to both experience and photograph anywhere on Earth, Newburn tells My Modern Met. On a planet where 99% of the world has been mapped and explored, new ice caves form every day as old ones melt away. This means that there are a never-ending amount of caves to discover and explore on the glacier. For example, the first cave that I visited back in 2016 doesn't exist anymore. What's left is just rock and open air, showing no signs that it was even there in the first place.

Newburn's images tell an incredible story about the beauty of ice and how it shapes our world. In a time when global warming is rapidly changing how and when ice forms, his visuals are a reminder of nature's power and what we risk losing. The ice that you see inside any given cave can date from 200-1,000 years old, he says. It can have ash from ancient volcanic eruptions trapped inside of it, as if locked in a time capsule, only to be uncovered at that moment. Its melting walls affect how we live even if most do not realize it, as its newly released fresh water is dumped into the ocean.

Through his work as a photographer and as a guide, Newburn ho...

Puppy Falls Asleep in News Anchors Arms During Live Broadcast, Quickly Gets Adopted

If you are usually around dogs and cats, you've surely noticed their snoozing habits. Some of them are picky about the places they fall asleep, while others doze off in the most awkward spots on the floor. Overall, you know there's no bigger honor than having them fall asleep on your lap or your arms. That's exactly what happened to news anchor Colton Bradford. And not only did it happen to him at work, but the adorable moment took place while he was live on air.

That day's broadcast looked very promising, as Bow, a puppy looking for a home with help from the Animal Rescue League of Boston, was visiting NBC10 Boston. During the sports segment, Bradford and his co-host Melody Mendez presented an update about the NHL playoffs, and Bradford carried Bow in his arms the whole time.

While the pup looked wide-eyed at the beginning, she quickly doze off in the anchors arms. After giving her a quick look, Bradford realized Bow had fallen asleep, and reacted excitedly. OH MY GOD, she's asleep! the anchor mouthed, framing it with a big smile on his face. As Mendez continued to give the news update, Bradford looked around, mouth agape with thrilled disbelief.

After letting out a shhh sound, Bradford whispered, The baby is sleeping. After repeating the phrase to make clear why they had to lower their voices, Mendez took the opportunity to thank their producer for letting them take over this moment with puppy cuteness. Bradford then added that Bow is up for adoption and they can reach out to Animal Rescue League of Boston for more information.

In the end, it didn't take long. Bow's charm worked like magic, and she found a home in no...

Lava Introduces Self-Custody Wallet And Bitcoin DeFi Platform At Bitcoin 2023 "IndyWatch Feed Crypto"

Lava, a financial technology company, has unveiled a new self-custody wallet and decentralized finance (DeFi) platform on Bitcoin. Utilizing Lava's loan protocol, users can borrow stablecoins against native bitcoin, eliminating the risks associated with bridge hacks and custodian rehypothecation.

CEO Shehzan Maredia highlighted the advantages of Lava's borrowing mechanism, stating, "With Lava, people can borrow transparently without rehypothecation risk and without relying on bridges or custodians. Users won't have to trust their counterparty and can borrow using a system that gives users cryptographic assurance that the rules of their contracts will be honored." Lava achieves this through invisible smart contracts called discreet log contracts (DLCs), which ensure collateral integrity and enable programmable loan initiation and repayment without the need for intermediaries.

According to a press release sent to Bitcoin Magazine, Lava wallet aims to empower individuals who face challenges with traditional banking, offering innovative security solutions and safety checks to prevent transaction errors. Maredia said that he envisions bitcoin and dollars as the two most crucial assets of the coming decade. Lava's goal, the press release stated, is to create a bitcoin and dollar-centric financial experience that grants users true financial freedom, enabling them to take control of their finances and simplify money management.

In an interview, Maredia expressed gratitude to his cofounder, team, investors, and supporters, emphasizing that this is only the beginning for Lava. The company said it intends to continue advancing its mission of making finance sovereign and simple.

Lava's self-custody wallet is currently available on mobile platforms, including iOS and Android, with plans for additional interfaces in the future.

The company said it intends to differentiate itself from other self-custody wallets through its user-centered financial utility experience including offering borrowing against bitcoin, direct purchases of bitcoin and stablecoins, seamless bank account transfers and simplified transactions. Security is a top priority Lava stated that there will be future enhancements like collaborative custody and cold wallet integration.

Cash App, Lighting Labs, Lightspark Executives Discuss Bringing Bitcoin Payments To The World "IndyWatch Feed Crypto"

In a panel discussion at the Bitcoin 2023 conference moderated by CNBC technology reporter MacKenzie Sigalos, leaders from some of the biggest businesses building services based on the Lightning Network discussed the opportunities and challenges for Bitcoins payments-focused second layer protocol.

The discussion, titled Building Lightning-Native Companies, featured Elizabeth Stark, the CEO of software development firm Lightning Labs; David Marcus, the CEO of Lightspark, a firm focused on making Lightning adoption easier and more accessible; and Miles Suter, the Bitcoin product lead at Cash App, a mobile payment platform that introduced Lighting payments to its more than 40 million users in 2022.

"We've really reached the point right now where Lightning is maturing and we're seeing more and more adoption, Stark said, summarizing the momentum she has seen since she co-founded Lightning Labs in 2016. People are adopting the network because it is solving real problems for them."

By allowing peers to create closed payment channels between themselves, which are only settled on the underlying Bitcoin blockchain when closed, the Lightning Network enables bitcoin payments that can take place in seconds while still benefiting from the security of Bitcoins base ledger. But as this second layer is relatively young, adoption represents just a fraction of the larger digital payments volume across the world.

The panelists highlighted the importance of developing products and services that make Lightning easier to use and solve some of its outstanding issues, like the networks relatively-low liquidity and limited number of nodes.

A channel-based payment network is still very complicated, Sigalos pointed out. Theres not a ton of liquidity sitting on the nodes right now for instance.

In response, Suter noted that many of the challenges in making Lightning more accessible derive from Bitcoins most important qualities.

"It's hard to develop on Bitcoin, he explained. We see that everyday... but it's an intentional decision because we believe that's what allows it to maintain a very minimal attack surface.

But the panelists all agreed that when there are significant problems for Lightning to solve, like in countries where it can help people access the dollar or enable more efficient cross-border transactions, adoption is evident....

A sign on the dried grass in front of my apartment building named it the Isles of Charm, a label that suggestedcorrectlythe irony of the complexs eventual decay. I moved in on a COVID-era deal, meaning I could afford a studio unit in Los Feliz, though only the kind with communal laundry machines that smelled like Tide pods and urine. The walls were thin, and that was how I met my neighbors.

I shared a hallway and one tiled wall with Brian and Luciana. Brian and Luciana kept their door open all the time, to let the wind in. The distance between their lives and mine was a door screen and the stuttering hum of my air conditioner. I heard everything. They were older than I was, in their mid-thirties or forties. It wasnt sex, though their arguments occasionally seemed to have an erotic fervor.

I never loved you, he would scream.

Youre a garden-variety narcissist, she would yell back.

They made up quickly. The morning after a catastrophic meltdown, Luciana would reappear, bouncing down the stairs with their neatly trimmed terriers in tow. They both had matching bumper stickers on their Volkswagens that read WHO RESCUED WHO? with a paw print next to the text. He worked freelance in movies and bought nice leather sneakers. She drank green juice and spoke lisping Barcelona Spanish on the phone. They captivated me. I didnt understand them at all.

Jean-Michel Basquiat was an exceptional artistic talent who was lost far too soon. This is made all the more clear in a new exhibition organized by his estate. Curated by his sisters, Lisane Basquiat and Jeanine Heriveaux, Jean-Michel Basquiat: King Pleasure, is an intimate look at the artist that could only be organized by those who knew and loved him most. After an incredible run in New York City, the exhibition has moved to Los Angeles at The Grand LA, giving those on the West Coast a chance to learn more about this shining star of the 1980s arts scene.

Over 200 rare and never-before-seen paintings and drawings, as well as ephemera, help tell the story of Basquiat's life. There are also recreations of his New York City art studio, his family home, and the Michael Todd VIP Room of NYCs iconic Palladium nightclub, for which he created two large-scale paintings. Architect David Adjaye created these immersive environments, which allow visitors to dive into Basquiat's world.

The family also made sure to explore other events in Basquiat's life that would have surely influenced his artistic output. This includes his time spent living in Puerto Rico as a child, as well as travels to the Ivory Coast, and his time working in Los Angeles.

While there have been many exhibitions about Basquiat in the nearly 40 years since his untimely death, the family element of King Pleasure makes this unique. Harper's Bazaar calls it an unprecedented look at the creative evolution of the artist behind the legend.

Funko Is Dumping $30 Million Worth of Toys Into Landfills Because the Company Is in Trouble "IndyWatch Feed Arts"

Well, this sure doesnt sound good, now does it?

NO, IT DOES NOT.

But its a true story and its also kind of a major bummer

The company that makes those Funky Pop figures that you see pretty much everywhere these days apparently overestimated demand for their products by a longshot and now theyre dumping $30 million worth of their products into landfills.

Crochet Ramblings "IndyWatch Feed Craft"

I don't know about your part of the world, but we have been having a rainy May.
I expect to start growing mushrooms on myself any day now.
However, my shop always cheers me up, and all the colorful yarn inside make my days brighter and happier despite the horrid weather outside. And it makes me think of summer.
Which brings me to this particular thread.

The Kordenet Flash has an amazing palette of colours and I have been eyeing  several of them for my summer project. First I wanted to make myself a dress, but the thread is thin and unless I double it, it will take forever to make it. Then, I thought that a dress as such is quite limiting as compared to a blouse and a skirt, because as a two-piece, I can combine them with other blouses, tops and skirts.
So, a two-piece it is going to be.
Now, I am wavering between the blues and the greens. The...

Brian Cox had the best response to sewage swimming Tory MP Damian Green "IndyWatch Feed Satire"

As youll probably already be aware by now, Britains waterways and coastline is currently and lets be frank about it full of shit.

The sterling campaigning work of people like Feargal Sharkey @Feargal_Sharkey on Twitter has helped make this a headline issue.

So much so that today water companies in England apologised for repeated sewage spills and pledged to invest 10bn this decade in a too little, too late bid to quell widespread fury over pollution.

And we mention all this because senior Conservative MP and former minister Damian Green went on ITV last night to tell everyone he really didnt understand what the fuss was about.

Because, well, back in the day, he used to swim in the stuff for fun, apparently. Well, something like that.

And it got no end of fabulously on-point responses, but surely no-one said it better than Professor Brian Cox.

Boom.

Hello, everyone. New member here, used to be a big fan of SB. I posed this same question on their forums and got banned without warning or reason, so I am a little hesitant here. I reviewed the rules here just like that site, so I really hope that if there is something wrong with my post that someone please actually tell me. :/

A week ago, I bought a 35 L mealprep backpack from Wolfpak. I would link it here like I did on SB, but I don't want anyone thinking I am advertising. I wasn't. I...

Toncoin (TON) Price Plummets As Bears Overpower Bulls In Market Downturn "IndyWatch Feed Crypto"

Toncoin is trading in the red today, losing some of its price gains in the past week. Its 24-hour trading volume is down over 3% at press time, indirectly contributing to todays price slump.

TON traded at the $2 price level since January 1, 2023, slowly accumulating its gains. However, the bears forced a price decline to the $1.9 price level on May 9, 2023, where the asset trades today.

TONs Movement Suggests A Bearish Trend Ahead

TON is in a downtrend, forming a red candle. It has dropped below its 50-day Simple Moving Average (SMA), confirming the bearish trend. Also, TONs Moving average Convergence/Divergence (MACD) is below its signal line and shows a negative value, which is also bearish sentiment.

The Relative Strength Index (RSI) is 42.65, dropping out of the neutral zone as it approaches the oversold region 30. The indicator is also moving downwards, reflecting the pressure from the bears.

TONs price will likely decline till it rests on its nearest support level and the bulls rally again. Moreover, TONs 200-day SMA shows a long-term bullish sentiment.

Toncoin (TON) Price Plummets As Bears Overpower Bulls In Market Downturn

TON is just above the $1.8422 support as the bears mount pressure. A decline below this level will cause a price drop to $1.7525, its next support level. The bearish pressure at the $1.9918 resistance led to the current price drop for the asset. TON will likely continue its downtrend in the short term.

Recent Development Trends On Toncoin Network Likely To Influence Its Price

The Ton Foundation announced the latest network developments in a blog post for community members. These developments could lead to a positive price action soon.

Ton Wallet For KaiOS: Ton Wallet is currently available for KaiOS users. KaiOS is the worlds third largest operating system (OS), functional in over 160 million devices. This wallet enables users w...
