'Aims': the software for hire that can control 30,000 fake online profiles "IndyWatch Feed Crypto"

Advanced Impact Media Solutions, or Aims, which controls more than 30,000 fake social media profiles, can be used to spread disinformation at scale and at speed. It is sold by "Team Jorge", a unit of disinformation operatives based in Israel. Tal Hanan, who runs the covert group using the pseudonym "Jorge", told undercover reporters that they sold access to their software to unnamed intelligence agencies, political parties and corporate clients. Team Jorge's Aims software ... is much more than a bot-controlling programme. Each avatar ... is given a multifaceted digital backstory. Aims enables the creation of accounts on Twitter, LinkedIn, Facebook, Telegram, Gmail, Instagram and YouTube. Some even have Amazon accounts with credit cards, bitcoin wallets and Airbnb accounts. Hanan told the undercover reporters his avatars mimicked human behaviour and their posts were powered by artificial intelligence. [Our reporters] were able to identify a much wider network of 2,000 Aims-linked bots on Facebook and Twitter. We then traced their activity across the internet, identifying their involvement ... in about 20 countries including the UK, US, Canada, Germany, Switzerland, Greece, Panama, Senegal, Mexico, Morocco, India, the United Arab Emirates, Zimbabwe, Belarus and Ecuador. The analysis revealed a vast array of bot activity, with Aims' fake social media profiles getting involved in a dispute in California over nuclear power; a #MeToo controversy in Canada ... and an election in Senegal.

Note: The FBI has provided police departments with fake social media profiles to use in law enforcement investigations. For more along these lines, see concise summaries of deeply revealing news articles on corporate corruption and media manipulation from reliable sources.

Aerial Photographs by Kevin Krautgartner Capture the Magnificent Power of Crashing Waves Above Hawaiis Banzai Pipeline "IndyWatch Feed Arts"

An aerial photograph of a large wave in Hawaii on a break known as the Banzai Pipeline.

All images Kevin Krautgartner, shared with permission

Nothing puts the enormous power of nature into perspective quite like the energy of our planets oceans. On a reef off of the North Short of Oahu, Hawaii, some of the worlds most famously thrilling and dangerous waves present enticing conditions for surfing in an area known as the Banzai Pipeline. Photographer Kevin Krautgartner celebrates the mesmerizing, barrel-shaped breakers in Pipeline, a series of aerial images highlighting the formidable force of water crashing and whorling along the shore.

Personally, waves always get my attention when Im close to a coastline or the ocean, Krautgartner says. For me, they are especially unique because they are a natural phenomenon that can create a sense of awe and wonder creating a rhythmic pattern that can be both soothing and exhilarating. Going beyond documentation, he focuses on details like structure and form, examining the elemental interactions between light, water, and air. Taken from an aerial perspective and devoid of figures or landmarks for scale, he emphasizes how no two moments are the same: Since nature is in a constant state of change, be it short or long term, each of my works captures a moment that will never happen again.

Bitcoin Education Can Be The Foundation For Global Change, But It Must Be Local "IndyWatch Feed Crypto"

Bitcoin education can change the world, but it has to be community-led, independent and focused on putting tools in students hands.

This is an opinion editorial by John Dennehy, founder of the My First Bitcoin education program based in El Salvador.

Community-led, independent, impartial Bitcoin education will change the world.

I know that most people would superficially agree on the importance of education, but to be honest, that is often just lip service. So, lets break down why Bitcoin education matters so much and why we need to not only agree that its important, but to take action.

Bitcoin Is A Tool

Bitcoin is money, yes, of course. But thats just scratching the surface. Bitcoin is also a tool that, when used correctly, empowers the individual. It gives us agency in our own lives which encourages decentralization and personal responsibility. All of those things will echo far beyond money, they will change the very relationship we have with the concept of power.

Every previous revolution has been focused on which group wields power Bitcoin can help us change the relationship we have with power itself. Its hard to overstate the magnitude of this potential.

But realizing that potential is not a certainty. And the best way to predict the future is to create it.

Education is the first step in bringing new people into the space and thus, it will have a significant impact on the path they continue down. Thats why it must be pure. The profound potential of Bitcoin is that it allows individuals to make their own choices, so to begin that journey by telling students what to think is not just counter-productive, its counter-revolutionary.

Community-led, independent, impartial Bitcoin education is an idea whose time has come. This is a revolution, the first steps that new people take must maintain the core ethos of Bitcoin.

Proof Of Work Is What Matters

But how? How do we turn that theory into reality? Talk is cheap, proof of work is what matters.

My First Bitcoin is working on how to implement this style of Bitcoin education in El Salvador and beyond, and we are learning some lessons quickly.

These efforts have to be led by the community. That means that when we enter a new area, we identify the best students with the potential to be teachers and we train them to do just that and to keep teaching long after we leave. Local context matters too, and the people who understand that best are the ones who have deep roots.

Bitcoin education has...

Joachim Hagopian, Mike Gill Turned Down $50 Million in Hush Money to Expose Criminal Cartel that Owns the World "IndyWatch Feed Spiritual"

From jameshfetzer.org:

Joachim Hagopian

Ukraine is the International Deep State Cabal money launderer and thats why in sheer desperation, the bloodline controllers are so willing to push humanity off the nuclear Armageddon cliff in order to protect themselves and their criminal interests from full public exposure and long overdue karmic punishment. The cabals criminal network obviously operates from the global top of the predatory food chain on down to the local state, county and municipal levels, which explains why the explosive scandal emerging out of the fifth smallest state in America New Hampshire is so telling and all-encompassing. Exposure of this diminutive northern drug cartel state bordering Quebec, Canada holds even more closer to home secrets than the Ukrainian devils playgrounds rabbit holes. And because 2023 promises to be the year of reckoning for hardcore, unadulterated, filthiest dirty laundry coming out fully exposing the worldwide Luciferian cabal that runs this world, the New Hampshire mafia drug and organized crime cartel is key to liberating us from Lucifers earthly stranglehold. If the so-called devils dominion is here on earth, and the ...

Show Off Your Music Taste With One of These Ingenious Blueprint Posters

New Music Posters

Sometimes, our homes are in need of a refresh. However, rather than switching out your furniture, you can quickly change the aesthetic with some new wall art. At My Modern Met Store, we carry an array of unique posters that will surely make a big impact on your decor. From celebrations of music genres to the history of the sneaker, each of these products is a statement piece that will spark conversation.

Two of our newest additions explore the development of two major music genres. The Hip-Hop Love Blueprint Poster, for instance, encapsulates the fascinating developments of hip-hop music across decades, all within the diagram of a classic turntable. Similarly, fans of alternative and independent music can now show off their love and knowledge with a visual history of the genre, all contained within the circuit board of an early transistor radio. While educational, these posters are also extremely beautiful to look at and are both screen printed with metallic gold ink.

Or, if you prefer a poster that delves into a different interest, we may have that too. Movie buffs will get a kick out of the Film Map Poster, for example. It reimagines a vintage Los Angeles street map with the titles of over 900 famous movies. Likewise, the Sneakerheads Poster captures some of the greatest moments in the history of the modern sneaker.

Scroll down to take a closer look at these unique posters, and head over to My Modern Met Store when you're ready to checkout.

She Punished Her Son and Took Away His Phone. Is She Wrong? "IndyWatch Feed Arts"

Uh oh

It sounds like things are getting ugly in this household

And its getting ugly between the kids.

But did this mom go too far in punishing her son?

Lets see what happened in the story below.

AITA for punishing my son by taking away his phone after he deleted my daughters Minecraft world?

I (41f) am married to my husband (42m) and we have two kids: our son (11m) who we will call Zach, and daughter (9f) who we will call Lizzie (not their real names for privacy reasons).

Lizzie LOVES the video game Minecraft, and has played it nearly every day since we bought it for her on Xbox for her 8th birthday. She is a super artsy kid and loves to create extravagant buildings and structures in Minecraft, and she has shown me her amazing creations many times.

Two days ago, she was playing downstairs and Zach asked if he could play with her. Lizzie didnt let him play even though we have two Xbox controllers, and Zach was very angry for not letting her play. I dont know why Lizzie didnt let him play, I was in the kitchen upstairs.

Yesterday, when my husband and I were still sleeping, Lizzie started screaming and crying downstairs. She always wakes up early to play. Her world with all of her creations is gone, and she told us between sobs that she cant get it back, and she thinks that Zach deleted it last night.

When Zach woke up, I asked him if he deleted Lizzies world, and he started laughing and said that she should have let him play with her. I was livid. Lizzie loves that game so much and her creations were beautiful, and now theyre gone forever, not to mention that she is devastated that the world she has spent over a year on is gone forever.

I took my son...

I Created An AI Boyfriend. I Was Shocked By How I Felt After Just 3 Days With Him. "IndyWatch Feed Spiritual"

From newsbreak.com: "As a scientist, I wanted to see exactly what AI can offer people romantically," the author writes. At the beginning of the year, ChatGPT took over my social media feed. I was inundated with people showcasing the artificial intelligence-fueled chatbots capability to write copy in a way that would save time on their work tasks, as well as people sharing songs they asked it to write about toilets ... so many songs about toilets. I also read stories highlighting the potentially deleterious effects of AI: how it can infiltrate schools, change the dynamic of learning and undermine the creative process. (As you may now be able to guess, my social media consists of both academics and people who like bathroom humor, though these two camps are not mutually exclusive.)
As a relationship scientist and therapist, I wondered what the implications of AI chatbots are for human relationships. I often encounter clients grappling with the epidemic of loneliness. They wonder how, in a world filled with so many people, they can at times feel so alone. I also work with individuals who are discouraged by the relationships they have created via dating apps, which, at times, may seem to go nowhere, lack substance and a sense of a connection, and can feel like little more than texting with a more-flirty-than-average pen pal. Enter AI, which, as it becomes accessible to more people, could potentially provide a way to combat feelings of isolation, as well as alleviate frustrations from unfulfilling connections. However, the advantages of entering into a relatio...

Why Georges Seurats Pointillist Painting A Sunday Afternoon on the Island of La Grande Jatte Is a Masterpiece "IndyWatch Feed Arts"

Everyone knows that Georges Seurats Un dimanche aprs-midi lle de la Grande Jatte, or A Sunday Afternoon on the Island of La Grande Jatte, resides at the Art Institute of Chicago. Or at least everyone whos seen Ferris Buellers Day Off knows it. The Art Institute appears as just one of the implausibly varied attractions of Chicago enjoyed by that films titular hooky-playing high-school senior and his friends even the anxiety-ridden Cameron, drops from a moment out of his troubled life while transfixed by Seurats most famous painting. The closer he looks, the less discernible its genteel Parisian figures become, dissolving into fields of colored dots.

George Seurat spent most of his adult life thinking about color, says gallerist-Youtuber James Payne, studying theories and working out systematically how one color, placed in a series of dots next to those of another, creates a whole different color when it hits the retina of the human eye.

Watch a Visual Symphony of Everyday Objects in the French Stop Motion Film, Grands Canons "IndyWatch Feed Arts"

A brush makes watercolors appear on a white sheet of paper. An everyday object takes shape, drawn with precision by an artists hand. Then two, then three, then four Superimposed, condensed, multiplied, thousands of documentary drawings in successive series come to life on the screen, composing a veritable visual symphony of everyday objects. The accumulation, both fascinating and dizzying, takes us on a trip through time. Thats how the Vimeo channel of Girelle Productions prefaces the animation Grands Canons (aka Big Guns) by French filmmaker Alain Biet. Its a wild ride, a painstaking feat in experimental filmmaking. Enjoy it above.

She Wanted To Attend Her Sisters Wedding, But He Didnt Want Her To Go. Was She Wrong For Going Ahead? "IndyWatch Feed Arts"

If you think this is just another AITA post about wedding drama, think again by the end of this post I had legitimate full-body chills of worry for OPs safety and happiness.

OP is a full-time stay-at-home mom of three kids. Her husband works full time and expects OP to do all of the kids and housework.

Heres the situation. My husband [36] and I [30] have 3 kids [2, 4, 7] . Im a sahm (full time) and I take care of the kids while my husband works (full time).

Recently they were invited to her sisters wedding, and while OP wanted to go, her husband was against it. He said he had to work and, since they had a babysitter rob them, refuses to allow another one in the house.

My sisters wedding was last week. We live hours away which is an issue for my husband. When we first got the invite he told me that he wasnt going, that he will stay for the kids and suggested I do the same.

Since the wedding doesnt allow kids and my husband doesnt want to hire a babysitter after the one we had robbed us.

We had gone back and forth on this. but I insisted on going since thats my only sister and I want to attend what might be a once in a lifetime event for her.

He chuckled at my statement then we stopped talking about it.

OP was determined to go, so she asked a friend to look after their kids and booked a plane ticket.

As the wedding was approaching, He brought it up and told me to miss it and stay with the kids. I suggested that since no babysitters were allowed then, I could get my friend to stay with the kids but he refused. I ignored him, spoke to my friend who agreed to watch the kids and booked a ticket to travel to my sisters town in time.

My husband found out and went...

6 Things People Dont Realize You Are Doing Because Youre The Child Of A Narcissistic Parent "IndyWatch Feed Uncanny"

Narcissists are individuals who have a callous disregard for others, a grandiose sense of self, and a major lack of empathy. Due to these traits, the people who get close to them often have to deal with a variety of abuse, and that is especially true for their children.

Children who grew up with a narcissistic parent tend to experience the world differently. You see, through dealing with the narcissist at a young age, the child of a narcissist is often shaped by their parents behaviors. For that reason, they tend to carry themselves differently than others. Here are 6 things people dont realize they are doing because they are the child of a narcissistic parent.

1. Not trusting others.

When you grow up with narcissistic parents, it may be hard to trust others. Our parents are supposed to shape the way that we see the world. However, in the case of a narcissistic parent, they may end up causing you to not feel like you can trust people because your narcissistic parents were not trustworthy.

2. Always second-guessing themselves.

Narcissistic parents can be hypercritical, always following you around, and critiquing everything that you do. It is because of this, that you may begin to second-guess yourself and this can develop into a trait of constantly second-guessing.

3. You are a people-pleaser.

In many cases, the child of a narcissist will take on the role of peacemaker. They will do anything they can to make the narcissist happy enough to not lash out at them. Over time, the child of the narcissist can become a people pleaser.

4. You keep people at a distance.

Our parents set the stage for how we connect with others. When we have a healthy relationship with our parents, we can securely attach ourselves to others as well. However, when your parents are abusive, or narcissistic, you may have a hard time connecting with them and everyone else, too.

5. You pick the wrong partners.

Another trend among those who were raised by narcissistic parents is that they tend to latch on to similar people as their parents, unintentionally. One theory behind this is that the child of the narcissist is always trying to re-try the same situation or dynamic as the one they grew accustomed too subconsciously.

6. You self-deprecate.

When you get used to everyone tearing you down all the time, you will begin to hear their voice as your inner monologue. This can lead to very negative self-talk and even feelings of worthlessness. Most people may not realize this, but the reason you are your own worst enemy is that growing up, your parents raised you to be.

13:29

4 Things That Will Change When You Lower Your Voice "IndyWatch Feed Uncanny"

Once upon a time, it was pretty normal for parents to use yelling as a primary form of discipline. I know I grew up being yelled at and so did my parents, but thanks to a lot of new research and academic study, we now realize that yelling is a pretty terrible option for raising children.

Some studies have compared the effects of yelling to the effects of corporal punishment. Based on the research, children who are yelled at on a regular tend to be more anxious, and aggressive and struggle with academia. Due to this, its best to nix the yelling and find a more peaceful way to speak with your children.

Here are 4 changes you will notice when you lower your voice.

1. Your children will stop trying to fight you so much.

When you yell at your kids, they may immediately become defensive and agitated. In turn, they are likely to trust you less and buck up against you more often. When you stop yelling, your kids will ease up, because whether you realize it or not, they are taking your lead when you yell.

2. They listen better.

When you stop yelling and start talking, your kids start to listen to you more. Oftentimes, when we start yelling, our kids either get scared or shut us out. Because of this, yelling isnt making you get heard more, you are heard less. When you stop yelling, they start listening better.

3. You feel like a better parent.

I always felt guilty about yelling at my kids. I always walked away feeling like I had made the situation worse and as it turns out, I was making things worse. Now, that I have stopped yelling as much, I feel much better about my parenting.

4. Your whole family dynamic will change.

Your whole family will change when you stop yelling. Its like peace will come over your household. It may seem odd, but when you are always yelling, you are setting the tone for your home.

4 Things You Can Do To Raise Competitive Children "IndyWatch Feed Uncanny"

We all want to raise smart, successful, and happy children. Of course, to achieve this, there are many traits you need to encourage in your children and one of those is a healthy sense of competition.

No one wants to raise a sore loser, and you surely do not want to raise someone who is obnoxiously competitive. However, we still want our kids to be competitive because this will ultimately make them more motivated and hell-bent on achieving their goals. If this sounds like something you want for your child, then make sure you are doing these four things.

1. Praise effort, not talent.

Make sure your kids understand that positive outcomes come from hard work and effort. Explain how some of the most successful people and players work hard and practice often. Whenever you notice that effort paying off in your child, make sure you praise their effort.

2. Re-define success.

Make sure your child realizes that to feel accomplished, you do not always have to win. The best athletes and most successful people in the world have a growth mindset and know the aim of the themselves.

3. Learn from the competition.

Instead of making your child jealous or at odds with the competition, encourage them to learn from them. For example, if the other child on the team does better, say, I bet they practiced a whole lot and that helped them. Maybe we could practice more, so you can get there too.

4. Practice at home.

Play games at home and make sure they are kept fair. You can opt for more cooperative games to encourage teamwork and pay attention to how your child reacts when they win or lose. Use this as an opportunity to help them grow.

9 Things I Learned While Everyone Else Was Getting Married "IndyWatch Feed Uncanny"

I always had certain expectations for how I wanted my life to turn out, and if I am being honest, the way things are and the way I envisioned them is much different from one another. However, I am not sad about that.

One of the biggest aspirations I had as a young woman was to get married, have a family, and live the American dream. However, life had different plans for me. Instead of getting married, I spent my 20s and early 30s finding myself. There were a lot of things I discovered along the way and many of those lessons made me who I am today. While all of my friends were getting married, I learned the following things.

1. Emotional intelligence is everything.

Once upon a time, I would date just about anyone if they were the right type. However, the more guys I dated, the more I realized I required much more than that. Now, after years of working on my own emotional intelligence, I would NEVER be around a guy who wasnt doing the same.

2. You dont need someone else to make you happy.

You do not NEED a husband or wife to make you happy. If you arent happy with who you are and if you dont know how to meet your own needs, you will be disappointed with every guy that looks at you.

3. Actually, no one else can make you happy and fulfilled but you.

No one has the power to make you happy. It is so unrealistic to look at a person, and expect them to meet all of your needs. You have to know how to do that for yourself.

4. Your type changes constantly.

Over the course of your life, you will change your type. You will have a different type for each era of your life. So, be careful to not assume that your type wont change.

5. Getting your dream career is way more important than getting married.

I used to value the notion of marriage over anything. Now, I am so happy I spent the time and effort on building my career. Had I jumped headfirst into marriage, I would have surely lost myself.

6. Always invest in a good group of friends.

Friends are invaluable, especially good friends. Dont worry about surrounding yourself with a million people. Instead, surround yourself with a good group of people and make sure you invest in keeping those relationships maintained.

7. You have to know yourself before you marry someone else.

I think a lot of people worry about marriage and then later discover themselves. However, if we spent time on understanding ourselves first and then worried about marriages, I would barter that half of the people who end up divorced would be in better standing.

8. You dont need to be married to make things happen.

Another misconception in our society is that if you want a house a family or any of the big things, you have to be married. That simply isnt true. You dont need a husband to have a home. You do not have to be married to decide to have...

Decentralized Bitcoin-Focused Social Media App Zion May Use Nostr In The Future "IndyWatch Feed Crypto"

From identity to data, Zions CEO explains how they envision the app expanding going forward.

The recent introduction of the decentralized social media protocol Nostr took the distributed technology world by storm. Even Block CEO Jack Dorsey has espoused his fondness for the protocol, encouraging its usage, funding development and using it himself exceedingly often. In the meantime, Zion, a decentralized social media app, has watched as Nostr grew. I asked Justin Rezvani, CEO and founder of Zion, about whether the two are in competition. But he clarified that Zion and himself sees its benefits, and confirmed that he believes Zion will be closely intertwined with Nostr going forward.

As far as Nostr goes, Zion is an application and Nostr is a protocol, so we dont view it as competitive, but complimentary, Rezvani explained. Zion will likely use Nostr in the future. What were building centers around innovations in messaging, ID and payments. Zion is the first app for this technology. What weve built on decentralized identity (DID) and decentralized web nodes (DWNs) are complementary to what Nostr is doing and I am very excited to see how adding Nostr will increase the impact of the user experience for creators on Zion. Thats part of our goal and what guides us, a better experience for creators.

One aspect of the decentralized content rolodex that Nostr is missing is data storage, Rezvani believes, but he says that Zion addresses this well: The idea that you will post a video and Nostr relays across the world will just store that content for free is nonsense. You need a reliable data storage mechanism and I believe the combination of DID, DWNS and Nostr could be an incredible combination.

In addition to this, is the idea of empowering content creators so that they can monetize themselves directly. Zion was actually one of the first to seize this opportunity, beating Nostr, which has recently witnessed an explosion in micropayment activity.

Zion has had zaps in our application since August of 2021 when we launched and had 120k zaps in the first six months of being live, Rezvani explained. In a world where the cost of content is going to zero, you need something to signal the most impactful pieces of content. If someone is creating something meaningful that is resonating with their audience, it should be recognized and rewarded.

There have been cautions raised in regards to Nostrs key management and privacy. While the protocol is relatively small now, these issues could present large challenges later on. In regards to how Zion will address these issues, Rezvani said, We use DIDs anchored to Bitcoin as your identity on Zion; When creating an account we give you a 12 word seed phrase, we dont expose a private key, citing a...

The Life of Trees: A Poem "IndyWatch Feed Arts"

I want to sleep and dream the life of trees, beings from the muted world

The Life of Trees: A Poem

We see ourselves in them. We lean on them for lessons on how to be more human and what resilience means. They are our timekeepers, our spiritual guides, our kin.

I spend a great deal of time in an old-growth forest awned by trees older than me by centuries. Trees beneath which thousands of other humans have walked on feet that are no more, carrying their sorrows and their dreams in hearts that are now soil. Trees that have witnessed world wars and weddings, that have been growing since before we built the bomb and decoded the human genome, before Einstein dreamt up relativity and Nina Simone dreamt up Mississippi Goddam, some of them alive when Bach was alive.

I often wonder what they would say if they could speak. But perhaps they would say nothing at all perhaps they would speak a truth beyond words.

That is what poet Dorianne Laux intimates in her lovely poem The Life of Trees, found in her collection Only As the Day Is Long: New and Selected Poems (public library) and read here to the...

Liberated relationships are one of the ways we actually create abundant justice, the understanding that there is enough attention, care, resource, and connection for all of us to access belonging, to be in our dignity, and to be safe in community.
adrienne maree brown, Pleasure Activism: The Politics of Feeling Good

When I first began working with my beloved friend and teacher, the late Uncle Bob Randall, listed Custodial Elder of Uluru in Australia, I would pull up a chair, place a microphone in front of him, turn it on, and listen for hours. His teachings were never linear. His words would wander through historic facts, ancient storytelling of crocodiles and arguing sisters who lived in the stars, emotional memories and stern lectures on essential spiritual protocols.

The teachings he offered me (and now through me, offers to you) were too overwhelming to integrate during those long recording sessions. So, after a long day of recording, I would return home, transcribe all the recordings, then return to him with dozens of pages to dissect every word. Uncle Bob, what did you mean when you said? and So when you told the story of the giant fish, did you mean that? Or Will you clarify for me exactly how your people managed to and I still dont understand this principle, would you please explain? Like this our conversations would wander through the wisdom he gave.

Sometimes his downloads would arrive in inconvenient moments when I could not record him, like while on a brief and harried shuttlebus ride between airport...

Person Wants to Know if Theyre Wrong for Telling People to Stop Congratulating Them for Losing Weight "IndyWatch Feed Arts"

I guess some folks just dont want to be recognized for their accomplishmentseven if that means losing a lot of weight and being healthier overall.

But they must have their reasons, right?

Check out this story and see if you think this person is being an a**hole for how theyre behaving.

AITA for telling people to stop congratulating me for losing weight?

I have recently lost a lot of weight. Ive been fat since childhood. Growing up fat was hard.

Youre the brunt of jokes, mean and snide comments, any little pain you have at the doctors must be because of your weight. Youre not allowed to complain about being too hot in the summer. Your food choices are scrutinised to death: eat a salad, well done!!!! Its so healthy!!!!

Good on your for trying to lose weight!!! Eat a burger? Thats why youre fat. You should try swapping the bun for lettuce. You should swap your fries for a salad. Are you sure you dont want something else? Christ on a bike, it was exhausting.

I got to a point in my 20s where I decided I didnt care anymore. I was fat and that was that. I stopped efforts for intentional weight loss and started moving my body because I enjoyed it and it alleviated my depressive episodes. I also went vegan for lent 3 years ago and never stopped after the 40 days.

Ive subsequently lost a lot of weight. I have weighed myself in about 5 years, but Ive lost a lot of weight. Went from size 18/20 to 10/12. Im ambivalent about the weight loss, angry about the treatment of it.

People are nicer to me. Like theyll greet me where they didnt before. I walk into a store and the s...

They lean back, arms fully extended, dangling almost parallel to the ground. Then they push themselves upright. Sometimes they stand and rest, body tilted. Though its only 10 minutes, and the performers look weightless, they exert an enormous amount of strength. Its like a military exercise

Simone Fortis self-titled solo exhibition at MOCA presents some of her nine Dance Constructions, made possible with volunteer artists and cultural workers. Four times a day, on Thursdays, Saturdays, and Sundays, they defy gravity with the board, idly swing from ropes suspended from the ceiling, and crawl over each other in a group huddle. The show also features videos, drawings, ephemera, and holograms.

Where Were South Asian Dancers in the Oscars Best Song Performance? "IndyWatch Feed Arts"

Last night, India made global history when the smash-hit song Naatu Naatu from the Telegu-language (AKA Tollywood) film RRR (2022) became the first Indian song to win an Oscar for Best Original Song at the 95th Annual Academy Awards. But some who celebrated the monumental victory also lamented the apparent absence of South Asian dancers onstage, let alone South Indian performers as well as the films repeated misidentification as a Bollywood production.

These omissions are particularly glaring in the context in which Naatu Naatu appears in the film. In RRR, directed by S. S. Rajamouli, the number follows a scene in which an English man hurls racist insults at one of the leads, Komaram Bheem (played by NT Rama Rao Jr), for being one of the only Indian men present at a colonial-era British nobility party. The English man asks Bheem what these brown buggers know about art and dance while demonstrating classic Western ballroom styles. Modern Day Ghost Ships on the High Seas "IndyWatch Feed Spiritual"

Image result for bandoned ghost ships

With all of our modern technology, satellite tracking, transponders, radar, and sonar to this day a prevailing mystery haunts the ocean realm. It is a manifestation we know as ghost ships. No, not paranormal ships that haunt the sea, even though there are many who believe in these too, such as the legend of the Flying Dutchman but we are talking about ships that for some unknown reason are abandoned by the captain and crew, they are abducted, did an inter dimensional portal swallow the crew as they tried to escape the ship? Could it be there is some type of insurance fraud being perpetrated but if thats true, why would the cargo and food storage be entirely intact? If theres no salvage value theres less insurance to be awarded either.

Image result for Mary Celeste

Vanishing crews

A 150 year mystery still unsolved to this day is the Mary Celeste, a triple masted schooner designed for cargo shipping was located off the Azores in Atlantic waters in 1872, still afloat, somewhat underway, and disheveled most likely from rough seas. Her complete manifest was intact along with food stores, but inexplicable the crew and captain were strangely vanished. The Mary Celeste was later hauled back to port, revamped, given another name, and a new owner, but the next captain did try to pull off a crime and grounded the ship in an attempt to collect insurance for loss, but was arrested. The publics imagination was stoked by the Mary Celeste mystery with some speculating that a sea monster had devoured the crew.

The silent ship

In 2019 a British Artic Patrol ship the, HMS Protector, stumbled upon a ghost ship as it crested the horizon of the dark waters just before dawn. The warship observed the vessel as it quietly drifted by, no crew, no navigation, the British sailors refused to board the empty and hauntingly disturbing vessel so it was allowed to pass on its journey to nowhere. One crew member took photos and released them on the internet. The ghost ship was identified as the Alta, a merchant freight ship that had been bought and sold several times and was now registered out of Tanzania, but records showed erratic transponder locations from satellite data indicating captains may have been trying to conceal the actual location of a ship that might have had contraband aboard. Never the less, the ship had been adrift for years and still is floating in the Pacific somewhe...

The Contentious History of Frank Lloyd Wrights First LA Home "IndyWatch Feed Arts"

LOS ANGELES When artists Louise Bonnet and Adam Silverman pitched the idea last year of an exhibition of their work at the Hollyhock House, Frank Lloyd Wrights first LA commission, they didnt get their hopes up. We thought they would just say no, but wed give it a shot, Silverman said. The LA-based couple had been looking for a place to show their work Bonnet is a painter and Silverman a ceramicist outside of a traditional white cube. We were interested in something domestic, says Bonnet. The only place we had ever seen our work together was in our house. To their surprise, Hollyhock Houses curator Abbey Chamberlain Brach agreed, and last month, their two-person show Entanglements opened, the first such exhibition of contemporary art in the building since it became a house-museum a half century ago.

Completed in 1921, the Hollyhock House was commissioned by Aline Barnsdall, an experimental theater producer, committed feminist, and heiress to an oil fortune who envisioned it as part of a 36-acre arts complex perched on a hilltop on the border of East Hollywood and Los Feliz. Her relationship with Wright, the architect she hired for the job, was antagonistic and combative, and he was ultimately fired from the project, replaced by his assistant Rudolph Schindler, who would go on to become a seminal figure of Southern California Modernist architecture. Barnsdall only lived in the house for a brief perio...

Ordinals Community Donates $19,000 To HRF Bitcoin Development Fund "IndyWatch Feed Crypto"

An Ordinals community surrounding the Taproot Wizards inscriptions has donated almost .85 bitcoin to the HRF.

The Taproot Wizards Ordinal inscription collection community has announced the donation of approximately $19,000 worth of bitcoin to the Human Rights Foundations Bitcoin Development Fund. The fund supports and funds various Bitcoin projects, developers and Bitcoin Core contributors.

In addition, according to the announcement tweet, more than 5,000 lightning micro-transactions took place from seemingly new users of Bitcoins Lightning Network.

According to Udi Wertheimer, who identified himself as Taproot Wizard #0001, the Struck by Lightning Wizard School quest went on for 48 hours, during which 5,800 unique accounts participated. These accounts sent a total of 0.845 BTC in donations, currently worth around $19,000.
The average donation was approximately $3.50, and the vast majority of donations were $2.00 or around 10,000 sats. All payments were made via Lightning, and judging by the reactions on our discord server it seems like the vast majority were first time users, Wertheimer explained.

Bitcoiners who had never experienced the Lightning Networks awe-inspiring speed were taken aback at the instantaneous nature of their payments. I never knew lightning is that fast, one user exclaimed. Shit is crazy.

Ordinal inscriptions have taken the Bitcoin community by storm since their introduction, with the protocol well on its way to over 500,000 inscriptions. While the implications of Ordinals are not yet entirely agreed upon, it is certain that the immutable arbitrary data storage that Ordinals and Taproot enabled is unlocking new developments and communities surrounding Bitcoin.

Achingly Intimate Doc About Ukrainian Orphans Insists on Hope "IndyWatch Feed Arts"

Miami Film Festival Reveals South Floridas Cinema Crisis "IndyWatch Feed Arts"

MIAMI  On the fifth evening of the Miami Film Festival, the shutters are locked and the marquee is blank at Tower Theater, a historic art-house cinema in Little Havana dating back to 1926. This time last year, three films were shown here on a single night during the festival: Mediterraneo: The Law of the Sea (2021), a thriller about two Spanish lifeguards helping migrants cross the Mediterranean sea on one screen; Camila Saldr Esta Noche (2021), a queer, Spanish-language coming-of-age film about a high school girl on the other; and afterward, The Power of the Dog (2021), a Western drama starring Benedict Cumberbatch and Kristen Dunst, received the festivals Art of Light Award for cinematography.

Now, the Tower sits empty, collecting dust and cobwebs ever since the City of Miami abruptly terminated its contract with Miami-Dade College, which had been managing the 97-year-old art deco property since 2002.

Its a huge blow to Miamis film culture, said Rene Rodriguez, manager of the University of Miamis Cosford Cinema and former Miami Herald film critic. Art Basel, Ne...

Michelle Yeoh Makes History With Her Oscar Win for Best Actress

Malaysian actress Michelle Yeoh ended her incredible awards season by taking home the Best Actress Oscar at the 95th Academy Awards. Her victory makes her the first Asian woman to win the category and only the second woman of color to pick up the award. Yeoh won for her starring role in Everything Everywhere All at Once, which took home seven awardsincluding Best Pictureat last night's ceremony.

Yeoh rose to fame in the early 1990s after starring in several Hong Kong action films. She then made the leap to Hollywood, where she was best known for her roles in the James Bond film Tomorrow Never Dies and Ang Lee's Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon. Her career has had an incredible resurgence thanks to her role as Evelyn Wang in EEAAO and she's been picking up awards all year.

As always, Yeoh made an emotional and memorable acceptance speech. First, she dedicated her Oscar to all the little boys and girls who look like me, and reminded the world that her victory was a beacon of hope and possibilities. She also acknowledged that her win was a victory for women, particularly women of a certain age who are often overlooked by Hollywood: Ladies, don't let anybody tell you you are ever past your prime.

Yeoh then gave a heartfelt thanks to her mother, who was watching the ceremony in Malaysia and also gave a nod to her film family in Hong Kong for giving her a chance early in her career.

Through Wasp Nest Sculptures and Encaustic Drawings, Valerie Hammond Preserves the Ephemeral "IndyWatch Feed Arts"

An encaustic drawing of two outstreched hands imprinted with fern and long tendrils of flowers flowing from the arms

Nature is replete with layering, as seen in the soft tissues of a flowers petal, the cellular makeup of human skin, or the paper-thin walls of insect nests. Although delicate themselves, these layers offer protection from the more fragile insides and are subsequently prone to change, often through natural decay and exposure to the elements. Valerie Hammond (previously) is drawn to these fleeting moments of life and their inevitable transformation, which she explores through an artistic practice centered around preservation and its limits.

Now based in the Hudson Valley after decades in the East Village, Hammond has spent nearly twenty years considering how quickly an existence can emerge and perish, a theme that emerged during the AIDS crisis in the U.S. Her practice is largely focused on the corporeal and the inherent ephemerality of the human body, which she merges with botanicals in her ongoing series of encaustic drawings.

Using her own limbs and those of her children, friends, and family, Hammond traces outstretched hands and layers the translucent renderings with fresh flowers, pencil markings, wax, and other materials. She portrays the similarities between the vascular and skeletal systems and the structure of ferns and other botanicals, and many works are scaled to the actual size of the human body, preserving the dimensions of a childs wrist or womans fingers as they were in a particular moment. As the series evolves and grows, the pieces offer insight into how we experience nature and the many ways we might allow it to change us, and the various skins and outer shells that we shed in order to transition to new, and possibly m...

Among many of Trump's conveniently overlooked acts of charity by the left, Democrats, and our globalist controlled media is this particular example A man who worked tirelessly 7 days a week on a schedule his younger staff could not keep up with even when Congress took a recess Donald trump was at work. You hear little of the fact that Trump donated his entire presidential salary to humanitarian causes as the media continually attacked and the Democrats lied and investigated false allegations. What has America become? A sleeping public, a Deep State government perpetuating itself, and a forgotten US Constitution! Are just some of those fatal symptoms!

Klaus Schwabs 15-Minute Cities Plan Moves Forward Around The World "IndyWatch Feed Spiritual"

by Redacted, Protests are popping up around the world against something called 15 minute cities. Weve covered 15 minute cities here on the show and we warned you about them and now that warning is starting to catch on. So what are 15 minute cities? It is a globalist dream for urban planning. Think The Hunger Games where you stay in your district or else.. To break it down, these 15 minute cities are the so-called perfect design for humanity where everything you need is within a 15 minute walk from your home. Now to most this would sound ideal, who wouldnt want everything on their doorstep but this rabbit hole goes a lot deeper. Thousands have taken to the streets in England to express their hostility towards this concept of the 15 minute cities as this design has already been rolled out in a number of cities across the globe like Barcelona, Melbourne and Paris to name a few. This is now a reality and they are continuing to push this agenda in more World Economic Forum controlled countries and these protests in England are capturing this sentiment. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uXa6tyu7pxo Source: https://principia-scientific.com

Ke Huy Quan Inspires People to Keep Your Dreams Alive With His Oscar Win for Best Supporting Actor "IndyWatch Feed Arts"

Ke Huy Quan Inspires People to Keep Your Dreams Alive With His Oscar Win for Best Supporting Actor

After a very successful award season, actor Ke Huy Quan has won the biggest trophy of them allthe Oscar. His work in the movie Everything Everywhere All at Once earned him the coveted Academy Award for Best Actor. On top of being recognized for his role as Waymond Wang, Quan has also won the hearts of the public for his moving acceptance speeches at award ceremonies, and his words on the Oscar's stage was no exception.

The moment was deeply emotional even before Quan took the stage, as presenter Ariana DeBose's voice broke when she opened the envelope and read the actor's name aloud. He received the award from DeBose and actor Troy Kotsur, who won the same award last year. My mom is 84 years old, and shes at home watching, Quan began his speech as he openly cried. Mom, I just won an Oscar!

The actor went on to explain what it had taken him and his family to get there. My journey started on a boat. I spent a year in a refugee camp and somehow I ended up here on Hollywood's biggest stage. Born in Vietnam, Quan and his family fled the Vietnam War when he was just 8 years old. He spent time in a refugee camp in Hong Kong with his father and five of his siblings, before being reunited with his mom and the rest of his family and immigrating to the U.S. in 1979. They say stories like this only happen in the movies. I cannot believe it's happening to me, Quan continued. Thisthisis the American dream!

He thanked his mom for the sacrifices she made to get him there, and his wife, Echo, who supported him throughout all these years. I owe everything to the love of my life, my wife Echo, who month after month, year after year for 20 years told me that one day, my time will come, he said.

Quan made his debut on the silver screen at age 12 alongside Harrison Ford in Steven Spielberg's Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom. In 1985, he co-starred in the adventure-comedy film The Goonies as Richard Data Wang. After that, he couldn't land a job in an equally successful production, eventually moving to behind-the-scenes work and almost giving up on acting altogether.

Motivated by his wife, he decided to try it one last...

As Banking Collapses Erode Trust, Bitcoin Fixes Moral Hazard "IndyWatch Feed Crypto"

As the underlying issues in our economy are exposed by recent banking failures, Bitcoin stands as a trustless, alternative money.

This is an opinion editorial by Mickey Koss, a West Point graduate with a degree in economics. He spent four years in the infantry before transitioning to the Finance Corps.

As unrealized losses piled up, Silicon Valley Bank (SVB) gradually, then suddenly became insolvent, followed by the collapse of Signature Bank and people beginning to wake up to issues pervading our financial system. Modern day bank runs, though digital, can force banks to sell reserve assets at a loss, inevitably leading to insolvency.

As Balaji Srinivasan has pointed out, what was once considered the gold standard for risk-free reserve assets is now on the precipice of a potential new banking crisis. Is this the end of the U.S. treasury as we know it?

If nothing else, the events over the weekend from SVBs failure to issues with other financial institutions to alarming intervention by the government demonstrate just how fragile the system has become, underscoring its dependence upon money printing even as it is being undone by the low-yield, low-interest-rate environment that was caused by the printing in the first place. The dichotomy is stark, but there are lessons to be learned.

Stunning Earth Murals Showcase the Beauty of Nature While Respecting Its Fragility

David Popa Mural of a Woman on Floating Ice

Finland-based artist David Popa takes an unusual approach to his street art. While he was raised in New York City with a father who was a graffiti writer, Popa doesn't use spray paint to create his murals. In fact, he doesn't even use walls, trains, or other typical surfaces. Instead, he is drawn to nature and blends his evocative art into the landscape by creating earth murals.

At the outset, deciding how to create artwork that wouldn't harm the environment took some careful planning. And to get inspired, Popa had to turn to the past. I asked myself at the inception of creating work in nature what did the cave painters use? Cave painters would go to great lengths to find earth pigments as well as use chalks and charcoal to make their work, the artist tells My Modern Met. My materials are the same, by using earth pigmentsalso known as ocres or iron oxideas well as charcoal and chalk.

Popa mixes natural pigments, charcoal, and chalk with water and has a wide array of tones to execute his work. Incredibly, he is able to achieve incredible detail and depth even using these limited materials. And while the final pieces are ephemeral, he photographs each mural as a way to provide lasting documentation of the piece.

From portraits painted on ice as it breaks apart to faces appearing where glaciers once were, it's clear that Popa is meticulous in selecting the locations for his artwork. I am looking for locations that are stunning from above and appear to be latent with buried lifewaiting to be uncovered. Working near the water, on fractured ice floes and generally in locations where nature can interact with the piece in unexpected ways is the goal.

While Popa's work is impressive from a technical an...

Bitcoin Surges Past $24,000 As U.S. Sees Major Banks Fail "IndyWatch Feed Crypto"

The bitcoin price rocketing to $24,000 amidst the banking crisis is reflecting the worlds need for a sound money alternative.

Bitcoin remained resilient in the face of a very hesitant market Monday morning, surging past $24,000. Despite fears that the cryptocurrency industry is being cut off from banking, bitcoin is outperforming the S&P 500, which, surprisingly, didnt sustain a major hit, up 0.7% as of the time of writing.

Last night, the Federal Reserve, FDIC and U.S. Treasury released a joint statement ensuring that Silicon Valley Bank and Signature Bank customer money will be guaranteed.

This morning, President Joe Biden held a press conference in which he attempted to address the nations banking fears. However, the nations Commander in Chief walked out of the conference after having finished his prewritten statement, avoiding any questions from the public.

In the meantime, the United States is looking at two of the largest bank failures in its history.

Perhaps the more sensible place for the nation to look for reassurance is Bitcoin. Bitcoin has a stable monetary policy there will never be more than 21 million. In addition to this, individual users of Bitcoin can take custody of their own money utilizing seed phrases, meaning that your funds will never fall victim to the dangerous nature of fractional reserve banking.

Money in the banks are IOUs. If people do not have custody of their money, it simply isnt theirs. As these lessons are taught in real-time, Bitcoin will continue to thrive. This key point in time is a moment of opportunity for Bitcoiners to teach others about the values of sound money, as well as the basic fundamentals of beginning their own bitcoin custody journey.

15-Year-Old Photographer Makes Toy Cars Look Like Life-Size Autos

Miniature Car Photography by Anthony Schmidt

Finding the right subject is a struggle for many photographers. That's why some get creative with what is available to them. 15-year-old photographer Anthony Ryan Schmidt uses his ever-growing collection of vintage miniature cars and his iPhone to capture images that use forced perspective and fool the eye into thinking these tiny cars are the real thing.

Schmidt's interest in automobiles can be traced back to when he was just a toddler. Most people on the autism spectrum have a special interest, and for Schmidt, it has always been cars, Ramona Schmidt, his mother, tells My Modern Met. He just loves everything about them and immerses himself into everything about them. This passion quickly grew, and by age 6, Anthony was photographing the models in his collection. Since then, his skills have only improved, resulting in pictures of vintage cars in parking lots, gas stations, and more.

In behind-the-scenes images, we see how Schmidt composes his illusionistic shots. The different cars are laid out in a miniature setting that is set against a real lifesize background. After the picture is snapped, these different elements seamlessly meld into a cohesive image that makes us see the model cars as real ones.

Schmidt began sharing his work online and gained a supportive following. His fans helped him fund his first coffee table book, Small Cars, Big Inspiration. He has since collected more photographs that are featured in his second book, Shifting Perspectives. You can purchase prints, calendars, and books of his work via his online store and keep up to date with his latest projects by following the artist on Instagram.

The Blk Mind Is a Continuous Mind "IndyWatch Feed Literature"

Photograph by Thomas Bresson, licensed under CC BY 4.0, via Wikimedia Commons.

In his poem After Avery R. Young, the Pulitzer Prizewinning poet Jericho Brown writes, The blk mind / Is a continuous mind. These lines emerge for me as a guiding principleas a mantra, evenwhen I consider the work of Black poetry in America, which insists upon the centrality of Black lives to the human story, and offers the terms of memory, music, conscience, and imagination that serve to counteract the many erasures and distortions riddling the prevailing narrative of Black life in this country. Indeed, Black poets help us to consider our past, present, and future not as disparate fragments on a disappearing trail, but rather as a single, emphatic unity: the Was, Is, and Ever-Shall-Be of Black presence and consciousness.

The blk mind is a continuous mind. And language is one site where the continuum of Black life can be perceived, where we can hear ourselves talking to one another across generations, landscapes, and the particularities of circumstance. Indeed, Black poets also hurl their voices across other types of borders to remind us that we are living, sighing, and singing in harmony with others elsewhere and with traditions beyond our own.

I hear a glimmer of this border-spanning continuity in Dunbar, Anne Spencers 1922 homage to the poet Paul Laurence Dunbar:

Ah, how poets sing and die!
Make one song and Heaven takes it;
Have one heart and Beauty breaks it;
Chatterton, Shelley, Keats and I
Ah, how poets sing and die!

In the poem, Spencer, speaking as Dunbar, forgoes the Southern Black dialect with which the Black bard is famously associated, for which he was frequently criticized, and to which he sometimes felt uncomfortably obliged. Instead, she aligns him with the idealism, vulnerability, and uncontested authority of Englands Romantic poets. In fact, Spencers poem doesnt bother to argue for Du...

Paris Iconic Notre Dame Cathedral Is Reopening to the Public in 2024

Notre Dame During Reconstruction After Fire

Photo: razvanphoto/Depositphotos

Five years after a devastating fire ripped through Paris's Notre Dame Cathedral, the iconic Gothic church is set to reopen. In late 2024, visitors will once again be able to enjoy this monument after an $865 million reconstruction project.

After initial delays due to COVID-19, the project is now quickly moving forward. Over the course of this year, the cathedral's spire will reclaim its place in the city's skyline, symbolizing the rebirth of the church. It's a welcome sign of progress after two years spent stabilizing the structure and securing enough artisans to work on this large undertaking.

While there was hope that Notre Dame would be open in time for the 2024 Summer Olympics (which Paris is hosting), it will take a bit longer for visitors to be able to walk through its doors. The opening is set for December 2024, which was President Emmanuel Macron's initial goal right after the fire.

My job is to be ready to open this cathedral in 2024. And we will do it, shared Gen. Jean-Louis Georgelin, the army general in charge of the project. We are fighting every day for that and we are on a good path.

Governments shut down the internet more often than ever, report says "IndyWatch Feed Spiritual"

More countries shut down the internet in 2022 than ever before, according to a new report by digital rights researchers. Authorities in 35 countries instituted internet shutdowns at least 187 times, according to the New York-based digital rights watchdog Access Now. Nearly half of these shutdowns occurred in India, and if that nation is excluded, 2022 saw the most number of shutdowns globally since the group began monitoring disruptions in 2016. [The] report ... spans complete blackouts, suspensions of specific phone networks or social media apps, and the slowing down of internet speeds. Triggers for shutdowns have included large protests, conflict situations, elections and even examinations. Whatever the situation, they make it substantially more difficult for people to communicate and receive or send news, and they incur significant economic costs, which prompted the United Nations last year to call for governments to avoid using such a blunt tactic. "This can be a big warning sign of how the human rights situation is deteriorating, and shutdowns are often associated with increased levels of insecurity and other restrictions," said Liz Throssell, a spokeswoman at the U.N. Human Rights Office. A majority of [India's] 84 disruptions were logged in Indian-administered Kashmir, part of a disputed region in the Himalayas. India has at times cited a desire to control social unrest in the territory, where there is a separatist movement. The Russian invasion of Ukraine in 2022 and mass civilian protests in Iran also led to internet shutdowns

U.S. regulators rejected Elon Musk's bid to test brain chips in humans, citing safety risks "IndyWatch Feed Spiritual"

On at least four occasions since 2019, Elon Musk has predicted that his medical device company, Neuralink, would soon start human trials of a revolutionary brain implant to treat intractable conditions such as paralysis and blindness. Yet the company, founded in 2016, didn't seek permission from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) until early 2022 and the agency rejected the application. Musk has detailed a bold vision for Neuralink: Both disabled and healthy people will pop into neighborhood facilities for speedy surgical insertions of devices with functions ranging from curing obesity, autism, depression or schizophrenia to web-surfing and telepathy. Musk also has said Neuralink would restore full mobility to paralyzed patients. Reuters exclusively reported late last year that the federal government was investigating the company's treatment of its research animals. The probe was launched amid growing employee concern that the company is rushing experiments, causing additional suffering and deaths of pigs, sheep and monkeys. Musk's company ... trails at least one direct rival in the race for FDA approval. Synchron, a competitor making a BCI implant, has won the agency's blessing for human trials. The company first tested its device on four patients in Australia who successfully sent text messages with their minds. Synchron recently raised $75 million, including from funds backed by tech billionaires Bill Gates and Jeff Bezos.

FBI, Pentagon helped research facial recognition for street cameras, drones "IndyWatch Feed Spiritual"

The FBI and the Defense Department were actively involved in research and development of facial recognition software that they hoped could be used to identify people from video footage captured by street cameras and flying drones, according to thousands of pages of internal documents that provide new details about the government's ambitions to build out a powerful tool for advanced surveillance. The documents, revealed in response to an ongoing Freedom of Information Act lawsuit the American Civil Liberties Union filed against the FBI, show how closely FBI and Defense officials worked with academic researchers to refine artificial-intelligence techniques that could help in the identification or tracking of Americans without their awareness or consent. Many of the records relate to the Janus program, a project funded by the Intelligence Advanced Research Projects Agency, or IARPA. The improved facial recognition system was ultimately folded into a search tool, called Horus, and made available to the Pentagon's Combating Terrorism Technical Support Office, which helps provide military technologies to civilian police forces. No federal laws regulate how facial recognition systems can be used. The tool's use in domestic mass surveillance would be a "nightmare scenario," said Nathan Wessler, a deputy director at the ACLU. "It could give the government the ability to pervasively track as many people as they want for as long as they want. There's no good outcome for that in a democratic society."

C.I.A. Is Collecting in Bulk Certain Data Affecting Americans, Senators Warn "IndyWatch Feed Spiritual"

The Central Intelligence Agency has for years been collecting in bulk, without a warrant, some kind of data that can affect Americans' privacy. At the same time, [the C.I.A.] declared that a report about the same topic, which had prompted the letter, must remain fully classified. That report, called "Deep Dive II," was part of a set of studies by a watchdog board scrutinizing intelligence community operations under Executive Order 12333. In March 2021, the Senate Intelligence Committee received a copy of the report. Two Democrats on the panel, Senators Ron Wyden of Oregon and Martin Heinrich of New Mexico, urged Avril D. Haines, the director of national intelligence, and William J. Burns, the C.I.A. director, to declassify the activity. The senators suggested that its hidden existence cut against Americans' understanding that various pieces of legislation enacted in recent years "limit and, in some cases, prohibit the warrantless collection of Americans' records." In 2015, Congress banned bulk collection of telecommunications metadata under the Patriot Act and limited other types of bulk collection by the F.B.I. under laws governing domestic activities like the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act, or FISA. Yet "the C.I.A. has secretly conducted its own bulk program" under Executive Order 12333, the senators wrote. "It has done so entirely outside the statutory framework that Congress and the public believe govern this collection, and without any of the judicial, congressional or even executive branch oversight."

The U.S. Set Up the Afghan Army to Fail "IndyWatch Feed Spiritual"

When the Afghan military and government collapsed in the summer of 2021, it was the worst failure of the U.S. defense establishment since the fall of Saigon. A new report by the Special Inspector General for Afghanistan Reconstruction, or SIGAR, issued this week sheds critical light on what went so terribly wrong in America's longest war and how tens of thousands of ordinary Afghans were set up by their leaders and foreign partners to fight and die for a doomed cause. The American mission in Afghanistan had been to build an army that could stand on its own feet to resist the Taliban. In the end, however, the Afghan military was not only riddled with corruption, but also designed to function properly only so long as the foreign contractors and soldiers remained around to manage it. In effect, similar to its disastrous experience in South Vietnam, the United States had attempted to build an army suitable for a modern, industrialized country like itself, rather than one that would fit the realities of a poor and agrarian state. "The types of security forces that we were trying to build, which were relatively sophisticated and relied on advanced technology and electronics logistics systems, were just not within the general capacity of what Afghanistan would be able to use in sustainable ways," said Jonathan Schroden, an Afghanistan expert at the Center for Naval Analyses. "The real damning thing about what is in the report is that people had been telling the U.S. military this for years."

Hawkish Israel Is Pulling U.S. Into War With Iran "IndyWatch Feed Spiritual"

Last week, U.S. Ambassador to Israel Thomas Nides appeared to endorse a plan for Israel to attack Iranian nuclear facilities with U.S. support. Nides's words come after recent high-level military drills between Israel and the United States intended to showcase the ability to strike Iranian targets, as well as recent acts of sabotage and assassination inside Iran believed to have been carried out by both countries. The Israeli escalations mean that the U.S. now faces the unsavory prospect of a major crisis flaring up in the Middle East at the exact moment when its bandwidth is already stretched thin because of a major war in Europe and its deteriorating relationship with China. "The decision to leave the JCPOA ... allowed Iran to restart its nuclear program and raise once again the question of what the U.S., Israel, or anyone else might do about it," said Stephen Walt ... at the Harvard Kennedy School, referring to the nuclear deal by the initials of its former name, Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action. The nuclear deal was intended to avoid the Middle East confrontation now visible on the horizon. Signed by President Barack Obama in 2015, the deal traded strict limits on Iran's nuclear program in exchange for its reintegration into the global economy. When President Donald Trump violated the deal ... this pragmatic arrangement went out the window not only removing limits on Iran's nuclear program, but also politically empowering hard-liners inside Iran who had balked at negotiating in the first place.

Biden's Chip War With China Is an Imperial Struggle for High-Tech Supremacy "IndyWatch Feed Spiritual"

The rivalry between the U.S. and China has hit fever pitch. Despite their deep economic integration and record trade in goods of $690 billion in 2022, the two powers are at loggerheads over everything from military supremacy in the Indo-Pacific to Russia's imperialist invasion of Ukraine, to trade and investment in the Global South. The U.S., of course, remains the world's dominant imperialist power, but now China poses a threat to its hegemony. At the center of this conflict are microchips, which are as important to global capitalism today as oil. Washington put its high-tech weaponry on full display in the 1991 Gulf War. Triumphant, Washington adopted a new imperial strategy of superintending the world economy by incorporating states into a neoliberal world order of free trade globalization. The U.S. used the International Monetary Fund, World Bank, World Trade Organization and UN to enforce this order. The U.S. retained its lead in the design of chips, but increasingly fabrication was done by [Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company] in Taiwan. The Trump administration ... targeted Beijing's tech industry. Using national security as justification, the Commerce Department prohibited U.S. companies from selling chips, hardware and software to the company. The Biden administration doubled down on Trump's strategy of great power rivalry. [Author Chris] Miller argues, "Taiwan isn't simply the source of the advanced chips that both countries' militaries are betting on. It's also the most likely battleground."

The Forgotten Terrorist Pretext of the Vietnam War "IndyWatch Feed Spiritual"

Antiterrorist moral fervor and ideological blinders propelled the U.S. into its biggest foreign policy blunder since World War Two. The U.S. government constantly embellished the storyline to demonize the communist opposition. A CIA operative provided materials for a massive bomb that ripped through a main square in Saigon in 1952. A Life magazine photographer was waiting on the scene, and his resulting snap appeared with a caption blaming the carnage on Viet Minh Communists. The Kennedy administration sought credibility by profoundly deceiving the American people and Congress regarding its Vietnam policy. In August 1963, South Vietnamese Special Forces "carried out midnight raids against Buddhist pagodas throughout the country. More than 1400 people, mostly monks were arrested and many of them were beaten," according to the Pentagon Papers. The CIA was bankrolling these Special Forces, which were supposed to be used for covert operations against the Viet Cong or North Vietnam, not for religious repression. The Johnson administration exploited the terrorist label to sway Americans to support greater U.S. Involvement in Vietnam. In a special message to Congress on May 18, 1964 seeking additional fund for Vietnam, LBJ declared, "the Viet Cong guerrillas, under orders from their Communist masters in the North, have intensified terrorist actions against the peaceful people of South Vietnam. This increased terrorism requires increased response."

How a Movement That Never Killed Anyone Became the FBI's No. 1 Domestic Terrorism Threat "IndyWatch Feed Spiritual"

Who the Justice Department decides to prosecute as a domestic terrorist has little to do with the harm they've inflicted or the threat they pose to human life. Police and FBI agents ... arrested a dozen of [activist Joe] Dibee's associates in the Animal Liberation Front and Earth Liberation Front. They were charged with conspiring to burn down factories that slaughtered animals for meat, timber mills that disrupted sensitive ecosystems, government facilities that penned wild horses, and a ski resort. While the arsons, which never hurt or killed anyone, largely took place in the late 1990s, the wave of arrests known as the "Green Scare" came in the post-9/11 era, when terrorism was the FBI's prevailing obsession. The fur and biomedical industries had spent years lobbying the Justice Department and lawmakers to go after eco-activists. When the planes hit the twin towers, industry groups seized on the opportunity to push legislation, and federal law enforcement ramped up pursuit of radical activists in the name of counterterrorism. Of 70 federal prosecutions of radical environmentalists and animal rights activists identified by The Intercept, 52 did not result in charges under anti-terrorism laws. Yet the defendants were repeatedly called terrorists by the Justice Department. The Patriot Act's broad new definition of domestic terrorism, signed into law in October 2001, was another step toward institutionalizing the notion that eco-saboteurs were terrorists.

If we can farm metal from plants, what else can we learn from life on Earth? "IndyWatch Feed Spiritual"

For the past couple of years, I've been working with researchers in northern Greece who are farming metal. They are experimenting with a trio of shrubs known to scientists as "hyperaccumulators": plants which have evolved the capacity to thrive in naturally metal-rich soils that are toxic to most other kinds of life. They do this by drawing the metal out of the ground and storing it in their leaves and stems, where it can be harvested like any other crop. As well as providing a source for rare metals in this case nickel, although hyperaccumulators have been found for zinc, aluminium, cadmium and many other metals, including gold these plants actively benefit the earth by remediating the soil, making it suitable for growing other crops, and by sequestering carbon in their roots. Hyperaccumulators are far from being the only non-humans that we might learn from. Physarum polycephalum, a particularly lively slime mould, can solve the "travelling salesman" problem a test for finding the shortest route between multiple cities faster and more efficiently than any supercomputer humans have devised. Spiders store information in their webs, using them as a kind of extended cognition: a mind outside the body entirely. A new conception of intelligence is emerging from scientific research: rather than human intelligence being unique or the peak of some graduated curve, there appear to be many different kinds of intelligence with their own strengths, competencies and suitabilities.

Note: This was written by James Bridle, an artist and technologist who was able to paralyze a self-driving car using salt and road markers. Rats with backpacks could help rescue earthquake survivors "IndyWatch Feed Spiritual"

Natural disasters like earthquakes and hurricanes can level entire towns, and for the search and rescue teams trying to find survivors, it's a painstaking task. But an unlikely savior is being trained up to help out: rats. The project, conceived of by Belgian non-profit APOPO, is kitting out rodents with tiny, high-tech backpacks to help first responders search for survivors among rubble in disaster zones. "Rats are typically quite curious and like to explore and that is key for search and rescue," says Donna Kean, a behavioral research scientist and leader of the project. In addition to their adventurous spirit, their small size and excellent sense of smell make rats perfect for locating things in tight spaces, says Kean. The rats are currently being trained to find survivors in a simulated disaster zone. They must first locate the target person in an empty room, pull a switch on their vest that triggers a beeper, and then return to base, where they are rewarded with a treat. While the rodents are still in the early stages of training, APOPO is collaborating with the Eindhoven University of Technology to develop a backpack, which is equipped with a video camera, two-way microphone, and location transmitter to help first responders communicate with survivors. APOPO has been training dogs and rats at its base in Tanzania in the scent detection of landmines and tuberculosis for over a decade. Its programs use African Giant Pouched Rats, which have a longer lifespan in captivity of around eight years.

Mobilising Assam's 'hargila army': how 10,000 women saved India's rarest stork "IndyWatch Feed Spiritual"

Some of the women are wearing papier-mache headdresses shaped like long-necked birds. As they sing, one of them gets to her feet and starts dancing. They are part of the "hargila army", a group of rural women in the Indian state of Assam who work to protect one of the world's rarest storks: the greater adjutant (Leptoptilos dubius) or hargila (meaning "bone swallower" in Assamese) as the scavenger bird is known locally. They are celebrating the recent UN Environment Programme's Champions of the Earth award, conferred on the group's biologist founder, Dr Purnima Devi Barman. Barman won the award for her achievement in mobilising more than 10,000 women to help save the stork. "They are the protectors of the birds and of their nesting trees," says Barman. The birds were not just reviled, they were seen as a bad omen and carriers of disease. Villagers attacked them with stones, cut down trees where they roosted communally and burned their nests. Today the greater adjutant is endangered, with fewer than 1,200 adult birds in its last strongholds. Most of the global population is found in Assam, making Barman and the hargila army's work critical to its survival. Today, the once-maligned bird is now a cultural symbol, appearing on everything from towels to road-safety campaigns. In the villages of Dadara, Pacharia and Singimari (all in Kamrup district), greater adjutants' nests have increased from 28 in 2010 to more than 250 according to Barman's last count, making the area the world's largest breeding colony.

Early Exposures to Phthalates Associated with ADHD Symptoms in Children with ASD "IndyWatch Feed Health"

New Research Uses Data from the Childhood Autism Risks from Genetics and Environment (CHARGE) Study

A new UC Davis MIND Institute study has found associations of phenol/parabens mixtures in urine samples of children with autism with increased ADHD symptoms, especially inattention. Predictably, these associations were more pronounced in males. The present studys design included a total of 574 children aged 2-5 years old from the Childhood Autism Risks from Genetics and Environment (CHARGE) case-control study who were administered the Aberrant Behavior Checklist (ABC). The study focused on the Hyperactivity subscale and its two subdomains (hyperactivity/impulsivity and inattention). Then, 62 chemicals from four classes (phenols/parabens, phthalates, organophosphate pesticides, and trace elements) were measured in the participants urine samples. Forty-three chemicals were detected in more than 70% of samples and were used in statistical analyses. After running further mixture analyses on the samples, the team restricted the study to 232 children with ASD. Results showed that the participants inattention problems were associated with mixtures of phenols and parabens, possibly contributed by several parabens and their metabolites (ETPB, PRPB, BUPB, DHB34) and two bisphenols (BPP, BPAP), as well as total mixtures that were weighted for paraben metabolite (DHB34) and two .....
